Chicago Cardinal: the Church stands with migrants

Chicago is being particularly hard hit by Donald Trump's crackdown on migrants. More than 3,000 people have been arrested in ICE raids over the past month.

In response, Cardinal Blaise Cupich, Archbishop of Chicago issued the following statement last Tuesday:

My dear brothers and sisters, today I speak to you as your shepherd, but also as a fellow pilgrim who shares the pain of many of our immigrant communities.

Families are being torn apart. Children are left in fear, and communities are shaken by immigration raids and detentions. These actions wound the soul of our city. Let me be clear. The church stands with migrants.

We stand with the mother who crosses borders to feed her children. We stand with the father who labours in silence to build a better future. We stand with the young person who dreams of safety and a better future. Our parishes and schools will not turn away those who seek comfort, and we will not be silent when dignity is denied in the enforcement of the law. It is essential that we respect the dignity of every human being.

Now I want to say something directly to those immigrants without documents. Most of you have been here for years. You have worked hard. You have raised families. You have contributed to this nation. You have earned our respect. As the Archbishop of Chicago, I will insist that you be treated with dignity. Americans should not forget that we all come from immigrant families.

You are our brothers and sisters. We stand with you.

God bless you all.

Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV has made compassionate and humane treatment of migrants a centrepiece of his papacy and urged American Catholics to speak out forcefully on behalf of those being targeted.

In his first apostolic exhortation, Dilexi ti, Pope Leo writes: "The Church, like a mother, accompanies those who are walking," wrote Leo in his first major document. "Where the world sees threats, she sees children; where walls are built, she builds bridges. She knows that her proclamation of the Gospel is credible only when it is translated into gestures of closeness and welcome. And she knows that in every rejected migrant, it is Christ himself who knocks at the door of the community."

Jesuit Joins Georgetown To Advance Research, Support for LGBTQ+ Catholics

Date Published: October 29, 2025

As part of the John Hayden Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, Sharma will serve as a Jesuit pastoral associate in the LGBTQ Resource Center.

Fr. Lucas Sharma, S.J., has joined Georgetown’s Jesuit community with a unique mission.

Starting this fall, he will serve as a Jesuit pastoral associate in Georgetown’s LGBTQ Resource Center, minister to the campus community, and continue his studies on religion, gender and sexuality as part of his Ph.D. in sociology.

Sharma’s work is part of Georgetown’s inaugural John Hayden Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, made possible through the estate of John T. Hayden, which also supported the university’s new Hayden residence hall. The fellowship allows Sharma to accompany students, support and develop programming, and conduct research on the topic of LGBTQ+ Catholics.

“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be able to give in this particular way and continue my research,” he said. “Hopefully, my work can inform how we might make Georgetown a place of more belonging for students on the margins across identities.”

Sharma graduated from Gonzaga University and volunteered in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Washington, DC. He pursued a master’s degree from Loyola University Chicago and joined the Jesuits in 2012.

Sharma has since earned master’s degrees from Fordham University and the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University and has taught sociology at Seattle University. He continues to serve on the university’s board of trustees and as the Jesuit advisor to Seattle’s law school dean. He also recently published a study in the Sociology of Religion that predicts Catholic priests’ attitudes toward homosexuality based on their approval of Pope Francis.

President Donald Trump, embattled by America’s growing affordability problems, has once again floated a unique solution: Sending Americans rebate checks for the tariffs that his administration has collected.

“People that are against Tariffs are FOOLS!” Trump posted on Truth Social Sunday. “A dividend of at least $2000 a person (not including high income people!) will be paid to everyone.”

It’s a bold promise with several significant complications.

Supreme Court Issues Decision In Religious Freedom Case

The U.S. Supreme Court has unanimously decided in favor of a postal worker from Pennsylvania in a significant religious liberty case involving the appropriateness of employers’ accommodation of religious preferences in the workplace.

Christian mailman Gerald Groff of Pennsylvania requested the court rule on whether the U.S. Postal Service may make him deliver parcels from Amazon on Sundays, which he observes as the Sabbath. His lawyer, Aaron Streett, argued in April that the court needed to review a decision from 50 years ago that set a standard for figuring out when companies have to make allowances for their workers’ religious practices.

In a 9-0 decision, the Supreme Court rejected a ruling from 1977 that mandated that businesses must “reasonably accommodate” an employee’s religious practices as long as doing so does not put an “undue hardship” on the company.

Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 requires employers to accommodate employees’ religious practices unless doing so would be an “undue hardship” for the business. A 1977 Supreme Court case, Trans World Airlines v. Hardison, said employers could deny religious accommodations to employees when they impose “more than a de minimis cost” on the business.

Supreme Court weighs longshot appeal to overturn decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide

Updated 2:02 PM EST, November 7, 2025

WASHINGTON (AP) — A call to overturn the landmark Supreme Court decision legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide is on the agenda Friday for the justices’ closed-door conference.

Among the new cases the justices are expected to consider is a longshot appeal from Kim Davis, the former Kentucky court clerk who refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples following the court’s 2015 ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges.

Davis had been trying to get the court to overturn a lower court order for her to pay $360,000 in damages and attorney’s fees to a couple whom she denied a marriage license.

The justices could say as early as Monday what they’ll do.

In urging the court to take up her case, Davis’ lawyers repeatedly invoked the words of Justice Clarence Thomas, who alone among the nine justices has called for erasing the same-sex marriage ruling.

Thomas was one of four dissenting justices in 2015. Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito are the other dissenters who also remain on the court.

Roberts has been silent on the subject since he wrote a dissenting opinion in the case. Alito has continued to criticize the decision, but said recently he was not advocating that it be overturned.

A small Jesuit school in Denver has quietly become a pipeline for powerful Republicans surrounding Trump

A Catholic university nestled in the Rocky Mountains has quietly produced a surprising number of figures who now occupy influential positions within President Donald Trump’s political sphere and the broader conservative movement.

Regis University, a 148-year-old Jesuit institution in Denver, has become an unexpected common denominator among conservative leaders who have shaped American politics for decades.

The connection includes two women in Trump’s orbit currently making headlines: Erika Kirk, the new CEO of Turning Point USA following her husband Charlie Kirk’s assassination, and Lindsey Halligan, Trump’s nominee for U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia; both earned degrees from Regis.

But their alma mater has produced a much broader network of conservative power brokers who have shaped American politics for generations.

Regis University, which serves about 2,700 students, was able to confirm to Fortune that Erika Kirk was a student there from fall 2007 through the end of fall 2009, and Lindsey Halligan did graduate from the school in 2011, but offered no further comment.
