NEW YORK (AP) — The anti-war spirit of the 1960s crowded into a church in Manhattan for the funeral of the social activist priest Daniel Berrigan.

A fellow priest mentioned both the FBI and the passage from Isiah about beating swords into plowshares in remembering him.

A standing room only crowd heard Berrigan’s nieces and nephews describe him as a passionate and exotic uncle who loved art and knew his way around a joke. “He had a way of making each experience a gift from heaven,” one said.

Mourners applauded loudly when a passage from one of his speeches was read.

Daniel Berrigan was famously arrested for burning draft records in Catosnville, Maryland in 1968. He died Saturday at 94.
