Zika risk sends tourists packing

As would-be vacationers avoid Florida and the Caribbean, other destinations promote themselves – subtly – as safe alternatives.

NEW YORK — With government officials now warning pregnant women to avoid Miami Beach in addition to Puerto Rico, some sun seekers are desperately scrambling for a Zika-free vacation.

And that has left other tourist destinations to capitalize – quietly.

Travel experts say families worried about Zika are now looking to Arizona and Southern California to get some sun, along with cooler weather locales such as New England and Canada.

The Zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes or through sex with an infected person. In pregnant women, a Zika infection can cause severe birth defects, including microcephaly, where babies are born with a dangerously small head. In others, it can lead to Guillain-Barre, which can cause temporary paralysis and in rare instances, death. That was the case earlier this month of a man between 35 and 45 years old who died in Puerto Rico after being infected.

Given that background, many would-be vacationers don’t want to take the risk.

Jen LeFante and her husband, Chris, are expecting their first child in March. The New Jersey couple had wanted to escape to Puerto Rico or the Florida Keys for some relaxation before the baby arrives.

“But it seems like every travel destination we picked is on the Zika list,” she says.

Instead, they are doing a number of smaller, driving trips including ones to upstate New York and Vermont.

“I’d much rather be on a beach,” LeFante said.

Bermuda has seen several groups move meetings and conventions there from Caribbean islands, according to Glenn Jones, director of public and stakeholder relations at the Bermuda Tourism Authority.

“That’s been a welcome and unexpected boost to our business this summer,” Jones said.

However, the island nation off the coast of the Carolinas has been careful about how it handles the situation. Educating tourists who ask about the absence of Zika is fine, but don’t expect a marketing campaign around it.

“There is a delicate balance there,” Jones says. “We don’t proactively seek to capitalize on this.”

Ingrid Kessler takes a vacation every few years with 10 family members, spanning three generations. This year’s adventure was planned for Riviera Maya in Mexico. But with two members of the group at child-bearing age – and older members with compromised immune systems – that plan was scrapped because of Zika. Canada’s Banff National Park was briefly considered as an alternative but the group wanted beach time and the chance to go scuba diving. So Bermuda won out.

Such travel shifts worry tourism officials in destinations with Zika.

Miami is the first spot on the U.S. mainland where the virus has been transmitted by mosquito bites. It has a lot at risk. More than 15.5 million people made overnight visits to Miami and nearby beaches in 2015, with an impact of $24.4 billion on the local economy, according to figures from the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Some of that business is likely to go elsewhere.

Visitors’ bureaus in some other destinations either said they didn’t have proof of a Zika connection to their growth or were hesitant to speak about the bump, fearing that they might be perceived as gloating in somebody else’s misery. But clues to the shift have surfaced, including in regulatory filings of publicly traded companies.

James Murren, CEO of MGM Resorts International, said on a recent earnings call that Las Vegas was benefiting as vacationers book away from Florida.

“As sad as that situation is in Florida, I certainly don’t want to benefit from it as a result of that, but I can say that we’re seeing a pickup in air traffic and in driving traffic even in the last couple of months,” Murren said.

It’s too early to estimate the economic toll of Zika. There are added health costs, the loss of business and the lack of travel. The 2002 and 2003 outbreak ofSARS, severe acute respiratory syndrome, was estimated by the World Bank to have cost the global economy $54 billion.

The affected destinations aren’t sitting still. Some are rejiggering marketing campaigns, hoping to attract new audiences.

Ingrid Rivera Rocafort, executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Co., said the island is ramping up advertising efforts to lure baby boomers, retirees and gay and lesbian travelers.

Magazines including Travel and Leisure and Conde Nast Traveler have been offering “Zika-Free Destination” guides, offering alternative destinations. They include Bermuda, San Diego, Palm Springs, Hawaii, Arizona, and Charleston, South Carolina.

And not every destination has to be warm-weather.

“When travelers tell me they want a place that’s Zika-free, terrorist-free and affordable, I suggest Canada,” said Wendy Perrin, a travel expert who offers advice on WendyPerrin.com.

Those who really want to head to Latin America are planning trips to places that are at higher elevations where mosquitoes don’t live, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, Mexico City and Bogota, Colombia, Perrin said.

Perrin notes that mosquitoes have been spreading diseases like malaria, dengue fever and yellow fever for centuries, many of them deadlier than Zika.

“Obviously, people who are pregnant, or trying to be, should avoid Zika-affected areas,” she said. “But the rest of us should be careful not to focus so much on avoiding Zika that we choose a destination that puts our health at greater risk, whether from mosquitoes carrying other diseases or from another cause such as tainted water.”

First Reported Case Of Tourist Contracting Zika In Miami « CBS Miami

MIAMI (CBSMiami) – A Texas leader described it as a souvenir you don’t want to bring home, but an El Paso man did. He got Zika while on vacation in Miami.

“After months of anticipation and waiting, El Paso has its first Zika case. This a gentleman who was healthy when he left El Paso, traveled to Florida, happened to go to the area where there has been some transmission of Zika by Mosquitos, came home infected, sick,” said El Paso PublicHealth Director Robert Resendes.

CDC issues a travel advisory to Florida, which has 10 new cases of Zika

For the first time, the Zika virus has prompted public health officials to warn pregnant women to avoid traveling to a part of the continental United States. The travel advisory comes in response to a growing outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease in South Florida.

The state on Monday said there are 10 more people who have been infected with the Zika virus who likely contracted it from local mosquitoes, bringing the total number of such cases in the state to 14. All of the cases have surfaced in a densely populated community north of downtown Miami.

Because the virus can have devastating consequences for a fetus, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urged pregnant women to avoid traveling to the area, and for pregnant women who live and work there to make every effort to avoid mosquito bites and to get tested for possible exposure during each prenatal visit. It also advised women to use protection during sex, because the virus can be transmitted sexually.

Furthermore, the CDC is advising that all pregnant women should be asked about travel to Zika-infested areas during routine prenatal visits. Any pregnant women who have traveled to Zika areas -- including this area of Florida on or after June 15 -- are advised to talk with their healthcare providers and get tested for Zika.

For couples trying to have a baby, women and men who traveled to this area should wait at least eight weeks before conceiving a pregnancy. Men with symptoms of Zika virus disease should wait at least six months after symptoms begin to attempt conception.

CDC Director Tom Frieden said the agency issued the travel warning because of the additional Zika infections that were identified in the last 48 hours, and because of new information that indicates mosquito control efforts are not working as well as officials would have liked.

Pope Doubles Down, Pushes Zika Virus Birth Control Psyop As Necessary “Lesser Evil”

TOPICS:Bernie Suarez Zika

FEBRUARY 20, 2016

By Bernie Suarez

Once again, acting as the bridging voice between the global elite’s United Nations agenda and his followers in the Catholic community, Pope Francis has ignored the actual statistics and what the community of doctors outside of the “Brazilian Ministry of Health” are saying regarding the lack of evidence linking the Zika virus to microcephaly. Instead, the pope recently put out statements endorsing the birth control method of avoidance, claiming that “avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil” in light of the Zika virus storyline which has been created by those pushing the global forced vaccination and depopulation agenda. All with the help, of course, of the mass media.

Now that a few weeks have passed since the mainstream media ran with the 2-dimensional, linear, fake-reality, Zika virus stories claiming a direct and certain link to microcephaly, those in the critical thinking medical community agree, if nothing else, on the observable fact that there is no evidence of any direct link between the Zika virus and microcephaly. What there is evidence of, is that villages which were sprayed heavily with pesticide chemicals, where GMO mosquitoes were released and villages whose drinking water was spiked with Monsanto-backed chemical poisons are the villages experiencing the highest incidence of babies born with microcephaly.

As has been repeatedly pointed out by researchers, doctors and those covering this story for the past several weeks, from a medical perspective we also know that the Zika virus generally doesn’t cause microcephaly because there is no mechanism or history to explain it. And we know that among other causes, chemical poisoning and imbalances do potentially cause the disorder and are associated with microcephaly. We also know (as they say in medicine) that “common things happen commonly”. Nature very rarely acts in a way outside of its normal pattern of behavior. The very nature of medicine and science is founded on these observable behaviors and often predictable results. We also know that whenever a scientist or doctor claims something that is not typically seen, that doctor, scientist or scientific body must prove their hypothesis with convincing evidence. No one is immune from the obligation to abide by the Scientific Method. It’s one of the key criteria that binds and thus ensures the integrity of scientific and medical claims. That evidence claimed by the establishment and medical “authorities” in Brazil and at the global level, has not been introduced. Zika virus is not proven to be linked as the primary cause of microcephaly. This is the most important point regarding the recent Zika virus engineered scare.

Subsequently, what we are now seeing is a slow systematic and often repeated disregard of the 3-dimensional reality that I wrote about recently, so that an engineered artificial 2-dimensional reality based narrative can be perpetuated. This artificial narrative is a dangerous sign of the direction humanity is headed and I argue is the much bigger story here.
The propaganda coming from the pope shouldn’t surprise anyone who understands how this artificial reality is now being rolled out on the masses on a daily basis and is a symptom of a greater problem. In this example, the pope is simply contributing to the synthetic 2-dimensional reality where the general public is presented with lies and disinformation designed to look feel and smell real, while they push for whatever agenda is desired. This significant doubling down by the pope on global government U.N. propaganda at the expense of science and reason is another reminder that there is no reason to believe anything put out by the lying and controlled mainstream media and their usual mouthpieces that include people like the pope among others.

As already stated, even if 100 percent proof of what exactly has caused the microcephaly in newborns has not been reached, one thing is for certain – there is no evidence that directly links the Zika virus to microcephaly.

Careful to not let reality get in the way of the escalating current fictional narrative aimed at pushing the global agenda to strip away all medical freedoms in the name of an epidemic or pandemic, the pope is carrying on with claims that happen to sound just like the claims engineered by the political authorities and mainstream media. Is anyone surprised?

Surely the pope is aware of the scientific reality, nevertheless he is once again going along with the global political narrative, as he has so often in the past, selling Agenda 21, Agenda 2030 and the coming global “sustainable” order as a type of virtue that his followers should heed to.
You can’t handle the truth about vaccines (Ad)

If nothing else, we can use these recent political comments by the pope to remind ourselves who is fighting for what agenda including who is fighting for truth.

Probably the most significant and staggering if not frightening fact that puts all of this into perspective is the fact that there are an estimated 1.25 billion Catholics worldwide who potentially listen to the pope as he tells his lies and/or is used as a tool of deception by the ruling elite. This is the same pope who has been selling the “sustainable” new world order to his flock and is now a leading voice of the global agenda.

1.25 billion is a lot of people and serves as a reminder that we are engaged in a fierce information war against humanity with no end. If you understand and agree with this article help push back against the global disinformation machine by sharing this message with someone.
