Johnson said he thanked the first-ever Chicago born pope for his courage and moral stance against endless wars.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Mayor Brandon Johnson met with Pope Leo XIV Thursday and invited him to visit Chicago in 2027.

Johnson and Pope Leo met privately Thursday for nearly an hour.

The mayor said he and the pope share ideals, including their stance against the U.S. war in Iran, and pushing back against actions carried out by the Trump administration during "Operation Midway Blitz."

"Of course we shared the legacy of leadership and organizing in civil rights in Chicago," Mayor Johnson said. "I believe he took that to heart. Ultimately, that is going to be his decision on whether or not his schedule is going to allow for it. Who would have thought that a middle school teacher, the son of a pastor, would be in the Vatican talking to the pope who has his roots in the city of Chicago? I believe that he was definitely appreciative of the warm exchange and invite and we will look forward to hosting Mass in Chicago."



Mayor Johnson and aldermen reflected on meeting the Chicago-born pope.

During the historic visit, they discussed politics, immigration, baseball and Chicago faith connections.

Johnson said the meeting brought him a sense of peace and comfort.

"I think the pastoral moment was the first question that he asked was, 'How's Chicago? How's Chicago?' And you know I was able to say that you know Chicago is strong," Johnson said.

The trip is funded in part by World Business Chicago, an economic development agency.

Chapter 35: Liberty of Conscience Threatened

Romanism is now regarded by Protestants with far greater favor than in former years. In those countries where Catholicism is not in the ascendancy, and the papists are taking a conciliatory course in order to gain influence, there is an increasing indifference concerning the doctrines that separate the reformed churches from the papal hierarchy; the opinion is gaining ground that, after all, we do not differ so widely upon vital points as has been supposed, and that a little concession on our part will bring us into a better understanding with Rome. The time was when Protestants placed a high value upon the liberty of conscience which had been so dearly purchased. They taught their children to abhor popery and held that to seek harmony with Rome would be disloyalty to God. But how widely different are the sentiments now expressed!

The defenders of the papacy declare that the church has been maligned, and the Protestant world are inclined to accept the statement. Many urge that it is unjust to judge the church of today by the abominations and absurdities that marked her reign during the centuries of ignorance and darkness. They excuse her horrible cruelty as the result of the barbarism of the times and plead that the influence of modern civilization has changed her sentiments. [564]

Have these persons forgotten the claim of infallibility put forth for eight hundred years by this haughty power? So far from being relinquished, this claim was affirmed in the nineteenth century with greater positiveness than ever before. As Rome asserts that the "church never erred; nor will it, according to the Scriptures, ever err" (John L. von Mosheim, Institutes of Ecclesiastical History, book 3, century II, part 2, chapter 2, section 9, note 17), how can she renounce the principles which governed her course in past ages?

The papal church will never relinquish her claim to infallibility. All that she has done in her persecution of those who reject her dogmas she holds to be right; and would she not repeat the same acts, should the opportunity be presented? Let the restraints now imposed by secular governments be removed and Rome be reinstated in her former power, and there would speedily be a revival of her tyranny and persecution.

A well-known writer speaks thus of the attitude of the papal hierarchy as regards freedom of conscience, and of the perils which especially threaten the United States from the success of her policy:

"There are many who are disposed to attribute any fear of Roman Catholicism in the United States to bigotry or childishness. Such see nothing in the character and attitude of Romanism that is hostile to our free institutions, or find nothing portentous in its growth. Let us, then, first compare some of the fundamental principles of our government with those of the Catholic Church.

"The Constitution of the United States guarantees liberty of conscience. Nothing is dearer or more fundamental. Pope Pius IX, in his Encyclical Letter of August 15, 1854, said: `The absurd and erroneous doctrines or ravings in defense of liberty of conscience are a most pestilential error—a pest, of all others, most to be dreaded in a state.' The same pope, in his Encyclical Letter of December 8, 1864, anathematized `those who assert the liberty of conscience and of religious [565] worship,' also 'all such as maintain that the church may not employ force.'

"The pacific tone of Rome in the United States does not imply a change of heart. She is tolerant where she is helpless. Says Bishop O'Connor: 'Religious liberty is merely endured until the opposite can be carried into effect without peril to the Catholic world.'. . . The archbishop of St. Louis once said: 'Heresy and unbelief are crimes; and in Christian countries, as in Italy and Spain, for instance, where all the people are Catholics, and where the Catholic religion is an essential part of the law of the land, they are punished as other crimes.'. . .

"Every cardinal, archbishop, and bishop in the Catholic Church takes an oath of allegiance to the pope, in which occur the following words: 'Heretics, schismatics, and rebels to our said lord (the pope), or his aforesaid successors, I will to my utmost persecute and oppose.'"—Josiah Strong, Our Country, ch. 5, pars. 2-4. A Union of Church and State

Now where was there ever a place or a nation on earth in which there was no union of Church and State except in the United States alone? With the single exception of the United States government, there never was a government on earth, pagan, papal, or professed Protestant, in which from the beginning of its existence, as such, until this day, there was no union of religion and the State; in which the religious power had no control of, or connection with, the civil power. This is the truth, and any one may satisfy himself of it by thinking, whether little or much. This being the truth, it follows that in the United States is the only place on earth where it could be said that they should make a union of Church and State. Consequently in the government of the United States alone could the image of the beast-the image of the papacy-be made. There are many other points corroborative of this, but this is sufficient for this place.

It was because of this prophecy of Revelation 13:11-17 that it has been preached and published, for more than forty years that there would be formed in the United States a union of Church and State, with national Sunday legislation-that there would be made here an image of the papacy. For instance: Forty years ago-January, 1853-a little pamphlet of about seventh-five pages, perhaps 21/2 x 5 inches in size, was published, giving a brief exposition of Revelation 13, and especially that part inverses 11-17. On this point there was then written and printed the following:—

“The two-horned beast says to them that dwell on the earth, ‘Make an image.’ The dwellers on the earth, or territory of this beast, it seems, have a part to act in this work. This clearly marks the United States as the scene of action. This is the manner in which laws are made here-by the representatives of the people. As all men by the Declaration are declared to be equal, it became necessary that some course should be taken by which all could have equal privileges in the construction of the laws. If the whole mass were called together, there would be an endless discussion and no laws made. Therefore the people were to elect such representatives as would carry out their principles; and they were to meet and make laws, which, when passed, should be considered the laws of the people. The image is to be formed by the people or their representatives.

“It appears probable to us that this Sunday institution is the very point on which this union will be effected. Here is a point on which all Protestant sects can unite. A point which we may safely say is the important item in the faith of Protestants is their Sunday worship.

1. 1. Last week we studied Revelation 12, the center of the chiasm in the book of Revelation. There are three sections in Revelation 12: (1) Revelation 12:1-6 talks about how Christ came to this earth to resolve the problems that had arisen; (2) Revelation 12:7-12 explains how the problem began–not on this earth but in heaven; and (3) Revelation 12:13-18 talks about how the conflict will continue to the end of this earth’s history. 2. 
2. In this week’s lesson, we will see more details about the section in Revelation 12:13-18. The area of emphasis here is from A.D. 538-1798, the 1260 day/42 month/3½ year period of Roman and papal domination of the Western world. During that time, Satan used two allies–which are called beasts and who unite to oppose God’s activities in every way possible–and delay what even Satan himself knows will be the final end and his destruction. 3. 
3. We have now moved into the portion of Revelation dealing with the future. God does not give us detailed accounts of future events. The purpose of these prophecies is for us to understand that God is still in control; He knows what is coming, and we need to trust Him. 4. 
4. Read Revelation 13:1-4,8, which describes a sea beast, and Revelation 17:8. Beasts in the Bible represent governments which emphasize their religion as a dominant characteristic. 5. 
5. In Revelation 12:3-4, the Devil himself is described; but, he tries to hide behind a human organization which in its initial stages was pagan Rome.

Maybe you heard. The papacy elected a pope today. We don’t know what he will be like yet, but here are some details about the voting process.

First, the voting process was over rather quickly. The papal conclave to elect a pope is all about grandeur. It is a gorgeous display of solemn rites to fascinate the senses of people and overwhelm the voice of reason. And the whole world was watching and wondering (Revelation 13:3).

Only 133 cardinals could vote in this election (electors). There is an age requirement (you have to be less than 80 to vote). Of the 133 electors, 108 were appointed by the previous pope (Francis). That is a significant majority.

A majority of the electors—for the first time ever—were non European. Based on this fact, I wrote to a friend this morning, “I wonder if a Hispanic pope will be elected this time.” It was a lucky guess.



His mother was Spanish, his father French and Italian. He is the first American pope in like…ever. He was born in the south side of Chicago and spent 12 years in Peru, beginning at the age of 30.

And the whole world was wondering after the beast today (at least the Little Horn power). 100,000 people gathered on Saint Peter’s Square today. According to the pictures and interviews, many were awash with emotion and adoration there. For Protestants, many of them were like “Meh.”

Is this pope a liberal or a conservative? We don’t know yet. Speculation abounds. Since he was appointed by Francis, we might expect him to be a Marxist/socialist like Francis. According to the Italian proverb “Fat pope, skinny pope” we might expect him to be a conservative (it means new popes often differ from their predecessors). We don’t know, yet.

What we do know is that there are a whole bunch of Roman Catholic United States supreme court justices, and lots of Trump appointees that are Roman Catholic.

A short list includes: JD Vance, Marco Rubio, Sean Duffy, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, Elise Stefanik, John Ratliffe, Linda McMahon, Lori DeRemer, Kelly Loeffler, Tom Homan, Karoline Leavitt, and of course Brian Burch.

Prophetic Waymarks

Recently, the nation celebrated Independence Day. This is a time when the citizens pause to commemorate the birth of the greatest experiment in human civilization. Here’s how the birth certificate of that experiment partially reads: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness ” (Declaration of Independence, July 4th, 1776).

But we are witnessing, just as the Bible predicted, the unravelling of the fabric of that experiment. As the foundation of western civilization, the Bible not only foretold the rise of the American Experiment; but also prophesied of it’s role in salvation history and its ultimate demise. The idea of America has attracted millions from around the world and has impacted more lives than any other system of government ever existed in the annals of human history. But, even as we celebrate that great idea, perhaps half of the population are advocating for its demise.

One obvious sign of the dissipation of the American Experiment is the recent ruling of the US Supreme Court making the president immune from prosecution for any criminal acts committed while in office. That ruling was in response to former president Donald Trump’s appeal to the highest court in the land claiming immunity from criminal prosecution for attempting to unlawfully and violently overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election which he knew he lost.

One of the dissenting justices concluded that the majority opinion has made the office of the presidency a seat of unbridled corruption. Justice Sotomayor, in her blazing dissent, declared: “The court effectively creates a law-free zone around the president, upsetting the status quo that has existed since the founding”. She concluded: “Today’s decision to grant former Presidents criminal immunity reshapes the institution of the Presidency…It makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of Government, that no man is above the law.” The peaceful transfer of power after a presidential election and the idea that no man is above the law are foundational cornerstones of the American Experiment.

Highly respected Constitutional scholar and former federal judge, J. Michael Luttig, echoed Sotomayor’s cries: “This is indeed an historic day in constitutional history as well as for the nation and represents the unsouling of America…America’s democracy and rule of law are this country’s heart and soul”. He added: “Our democracy and the rule of law are what had made America the envy of the world and the beacon of freedom to the world for almost 250 years now. Today, the Supreme Court cut that heart and soul out of America…No longer can it be said that in America no man is above the law” (J. Michael Luttig, Huffington Post, July 2, 2024).

Quite interesting is that there is virtually no mention of the fact that the entirety of the justices making that preposterous ruling are Roman Catholics. Perhaps it’s not politically correct to report the obvious. The question to this writer’s mind is, was this ruling made for the advancement of Rome’s agenda which is antagonistic to the ideals of the American Republic?
