Reports in US media suggest that America's top spy, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, made a rare, unannounced trip to Moscow on Tuesday. Neither the CIA nor the Kremlin has commented on the reports. If confirmed, it would be Ratcliffe's first known visit to Russia since becoming CIA Director, and the highest-level intelligence trip between the two countries since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. As nation turns 250, many Americans say the Stars and Stripes is now a red flag
The American flag: To some, it’s Old Glory. To others, it’s a MAGA hat on a stick.

To fly or not to fly an American flag? That was never a question for Bruce Watson, who has put his national pride on display for years — and nudges neighbors in his small New England town to do the same.
“I’m very proud of our flag,” the writer said. “It’s the symbol of ‘We, the People.’”
But as the polarized nation marks its 250th birthday, Watson, 72, worries his Stars and Stripes may now need an asterisk. “If we do fly the flag, we will also put out signs to make it clear that we are not MAGA,” he said.
NBC News asked readers to share their feelings and practices around the flag in a moment, polls suggest, when patriotism, national pride and optimism for the country’s future are all fraying. Like Watson, some say the flag can be taken as an endorsement of the current administration. For others, it isn’t tied to any one party but is a way of life.

McKINNEY, Texas — A Texas jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty Tuesday of the 2025 murder of Austin Metcalf, a fellow high school student at a Dallas-area track meet.
The verdict, reached in less than three hours and read by Texas District Court Judge John Roach Jr., carries with it a sentence of five years to life in prison. Anthony was 17 at the time, but Texas law allowed him to be charged as an adult. He is now 19.
Some in the courtroom reacted with cries and Metcalf’s twin brother, who made his first appearance in the courtroom, leaned forward. Anthony’s mother wept. Roach had warned people in the courtroom to control their emotions when the verdict was read. Anthony’s attorney kept an arm wrapped around him.
Metcalf, 17, was fatally stabbed on April 2, 2025, as the track teams of Anthony’s Centennial High School and Metcalf’s Memorial High School participated in a district-wide meet in Frisco, a Dallas suburb.
Anthony admitted to the stabbing, but his legal team argued he acted in self-defense after he’d sat in the bleachers under the tent of rival high school Memorial and was confronted by members of its track team and told to leave, under the pressure of physical intimidation.

2 dead in Washington and Mississippi as severe weather slams large parts of the country
Widespread showers and thunderstorms will continue Wednesday, with more than 50 million under alerts from the Ohio Valley to the Mid-Atlantic and as far south as the Gulf Coast.

Two people were killed in Washington and Mississippi, and hundreds of thousands are without power across the country as severe weather causes havoc across the nation.
Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue said that the person died in the city of Monroe, northeast of Seattle, when a tree fell on their vehicle. "Unfortunately, this incident turned out to be fatal for the only occupant in the vehicle," the fire service said on Facebook.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported one death and three injuries in Lawrence County, as well as storm damage to homes.
The severe West Coast weather comes as many parts of the country were hit by storms, including at least 27 tornadoes in the Midwest alone, in the last 48 hours. An elderly couple from Lake Village, Indiana, was killed Tuesday night, and multiple others were hospitalized as a result of tornadoes and a powerful long-track thunderstorm that lasted more than seven hours.
The Newton County Coroner's office confirmed that Edward L. Kozlowski, 89, and his wife, Arlene Kozlowski, 84, were killed when a tornado struck their home.
The National Weather Service office in Chicago preliminarily confirmed two tornadoes touched down in Illinois and Indiana on Tuesday, one of them rated EF-3 on the six-step Enhanced Fujita scale, meaning it had sustained wind speeds of 136 to 165 mph.
Hundreds of homes were damaged in Indiana, authorities said, with dozens completely destroyed. The NWS said that hail as large as 6 inches wide was found in Illinois.
