The Pursuit Of Knowledge

“Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

Genesis 3:1-5

In the first book of the Holy Bible, we find a story about the origin of sin and the fall of man. The story, recorded in Genesis, chapter 3, reveals how a serpent beguiled the first human beings, Adam and Eve. The serpent first enticed Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge with the promise that her eyes would be opened and she would know “good and evil” for doing so. Eve then gave the fruit to Adam, and he, too, gave in to temptation. Perhaps the most tragic detail of this story is the fact that both Adam and Eve already had the knowledge of good. Genesis 1:31 tells us, “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” Thus, everything in the Garden of Eden was good, and everything that Adam and Eve knew and experienced on a daily basis was good. The only knowledge to be gained by eating the forbidden fruit was the knowledge of evil.

A lot has changed since those ancient days. One thing that has remained constant, however, is mankind’s voracious appetite for knowledge. The knowledge acquired over millennia has changed the world for better or worse depending on your perspective.

A Century Of Innovation

The world was very different a century ago. Radio was still a young technology, and although the incandescent light bulb was developed in the late 1800s, only about half of all American households had electricity in 1925. (1) Even as electricity became more widely available, the very first television was demonstrated by a young inventor named Philo Taylor Farnsworth in San Francisco, California, on September 7, 1927. (2) The United States is about 247 years old. Thus, this land of opportunity that the American people call home existed without these amazing inventions longer than it has existed with them.

Although radio and television very much changed the world, no modern innovation has had a more profound role in transforming society than the computer. What is truly remarkable, however, is how much computers have advanced over the last eighty years. In February 1946, the first general-purpose electronic computer was put into service by the United States military. Known as the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer, or ENIAC, this massive machine occupied a room measuring 30 by 50 feet. The machine had 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors, and 500,000 soldered joints. It weighed an astonishing 30 tons. (3)

A Great Transitional Stage

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Romans 12:2

"For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

Romans 8:5-6

"For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."

Malachi 3:6

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."

Hebrews 13:8

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine a world that has changed in profound ways over the course of the last decade and is now in a great transitional stage. The last ten years have brought astonishing new technology to the world, which in turn has dramatically modified our day-to-day lives. The Internet has altered how we communicate, socialize, work, study, shop, and receive our news. The proliferation of smartphones has provided the masses with devices that are always on and always with you, allowing those who use them to be continuously monitored and tracked.

Life was different ten years ago. In the year 2010, only 20.2 percent of the American people carried a smartphone. By the year 2019, that percentage had increased to 71.4 percent. (1) These little devices have amazing capabilities that far eclipse the power of computers from the 1980s and 1990s. With just one device, the user can take photographs, browse the Internet, listen to music, watch television, conduct financial transactions, access global positioning satellite navigation systems, and perform a plethora of other tasks. Not surprisingly, these devices are highly addictive. If you attend a social function, you will probably notice that many people have their smartphones out. When people eat at restaurants, they often do so under the glow of their iPhone or Android phone. People have become so dependent on their smartphones that many of them have developed a condition that scientists have called "smartphone separation anxiety" or nomophobia. (2) The term is used to describe the panic people feel when they cannot use their smartphones. Researchers say this unhealthy attachment is due in part to a sense that people's smartphones are an extension of themselves. "As smartphones evoke more personal memories, users extend more of their identity onto their smartphones. When people perceive smartphones as their extended selves, they are more likely to become attached to the devices, which, in turn, leads to nomophobia by heightening the phone proximity-seeking tendency," declares a report from the journal known as Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. (3)

Amongst the many advanced functions of the smartphone is a nefarious capability. Smartphones, as it turns out, serve quite effectively as tracking devices. In a piece published by the New York Times on December 19, 2019, the authors explain how staff involved in the Times Privacy Project were given access to a massive set of data spanning 50 billion records and covering more than 12 million Americans in New York City; San Francisco, California; Los Angeles, California; and Washington, D.C. (4) Remarkably, this data is not being collected at the behest of a government, (though I am quite sure they do it, too) but rather by private corporations who gain access to the devices when users install smartphone software commonly known as "apps." This sad reality prompted the authors to write, "Within America's own representative democracy, citizens would surely rise up in outrage if the government attempted to mandate that every person above the age of 12 carry a tracking device that revealed their location 24 hours a day. Yet, in the decade since Apple's App Store was created, Americans have, app by app, consented to just such a system run by private companies. Now, as the decade ends, tens of millions of Americans, including many children, find themselves carrying spies in their pockets during the day and leaving them beside their beds at night - even though the corporations that control their data are far less accountable than the government would be." (5)

In response to the story above, Bloomberg News declared on December 20, 2019, "The 2010s should be remembered as the decade tech turned dystopian." (6) Indeed, the problem goes far beyond smartphones. The people of today's modern world have invited Amazon to spy on them by installing listening devices known as Amazon Echo which feature the friendly artificial intelligence personality known as Alexa. More and more people are installing smart doorbells equipped with video cameras that allow users to be watched. Everything we do online is tracked and cataloged, and as a result, true privacy is teetering on the brink of extinction.

Strangely, despite the increased connectivity of a world now ruled by technology, those most deeply ensnared can sense that something is very wrong. In a report titled "Alienated, Alone, and Angry: What the Digital Revolution Really Did To Us," Buzzfeed News states that those who once dreamed of a highly technological society have been disappointed by the end result. "When they opened their eyes, they did indeed see that the Digital Nation had been born. Only it hadn't set them free. They were being ruled by it. It hadn't tamed politics. It sent them berserk. And it hadn't brought people closer together. It had alienated them." (7)

Sadly, an overabundance of technology that is always competing for our minds and eyeballs has also changed the way our brains function, causing a dramatic decrease in attention spans. A report from Time Magazine published in May 2015 declares in its headline, "You Now Have a Shorter Attention Span Than a Goldfish." At the time, researchers in Canada studied 2,000 participants and determined that they had an average attention span of eight seconds. (8) The short attention spans that are so common today have prompted the Australian division of the automobile maker known as Hyundai to release a novel new advertisement campaign. These commercials, which were produced for use on the Internet, are only four seconds each and were inspired by a study claiming that the average attention span of online users is only 4.1 seconds. (9) As attention spans continue to diminish, it is increasingly difficult for people to read the Bible, pray, and seek God's presence. With so many distractions surrounding us, it is more important than ever that we give God our time, seek His will in our lives, and let Him renew our minds. Romans 12:2 instructs, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." We are further told in Romans 8:5-6, "For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."

The Fears And Uncertainty Of Our Time

"Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God. Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday when it is past, and as a watch in the night."

Psalm 90:1-4

"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever."

Hebrews 13:8

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."

I John 4:18

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

II Timothy 1:7

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine the events of our time even as a new year brings with it much confusion and uncertainty. News reports as of late have taken on an apocalyptic tone. With conflict in the Middle East, tensions with Russia, a trade war with China, turmoil in Washington, D.C., and an American stock market roiled by instability, many people are suffering from anxiety and a fear of the unknown.

The stock market in the United States performed poorly in December 2018 with reports indicating that it will be the worst December for market trading since 1931 during the Great Depression. (1) The mainstream media is now filled with quotes from experts speculating on the uncertain future. Some of these reports are markedly glummer than others. Such as a headline from CNBC published on December 19, 2018, which states, "As fear rises on Wall Street, strategists warn the worst is yet to come." (2) Conversely, an article published by USA Today on December 23, 2018, claims that the economy is still strong despite the performance of the stock market and suggests that it is "highly unlikely" that there will be a recession in 2019. (3) Another December 2018 CNBC report suggests that one of the causes of the falling stock market is the ongoing trade war between the United States and China. (4) However, American President Donald Trump has blamed the Federal Reserve for the stock market slump, due to a rise in interest rates throughout the year of 2018. "The only problem our economy has is the Fed," Trump wrote on December 24, 2018, in reference to the Federal Reserve. He further wrote, "They don't have a feel for the market, they don't understand necessary trade wars or strong dollars or even Democrat shutdowns over borders. The Fed is like a powerful golfer who can't score because he has no touch - he can't putt!" (5)

According to an article published by Bloomberg News, United States Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin held conference calls with financial regulators in late December 2018 and was assured that nothing is "out of ordinary" in the United States trading markets. Secretary Mnuchin also contacted the chief executive officers at six of the largest banks in the country and was persuaded that they were all on solid footing. (6) Ironically, Mnuchin's inquiries caused more jitters amongst stock traders, which prompted a flood of complaints. "Nothing says 'don't panic' like saying, 'I'm calling the plunge protection team tomorrow. That's the type of event that's going to startle markets and create more panic and fear when it's meant to create confidence," said Michael O'Rourke, who is chief market strategist at JonesTrading. (7) Similarly, Ian Bremmer, who is president of the Eurasia Group, was quoted as saying, "The Secretary of Treasury calling the nation's top bankers on a Sunday to confirm they have cash to lend. Not exactly confidence-inspiring." (8)

When it comes to topics such as the stock market, there is certainly a lot of chatter, but in reality, it is obvious that no one on earth knows for certain what the future may hold. Thankfully, we know the One who knows the end from the beginning, and He is never confused. Our God neither slumbers nor sleeps, and He is from everlasting to everlasting. Psalm 90:1-2 declares, "Lord, thou hast been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever thou hadst formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting, thou art God." Whether there is an economic downturn or meltdown, recession, or depression, we serve a God who knows all things and He has promised that He will never abandon us. For peace and reassurance in times of uncertainty, we need look no further than to our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who as it tells us in Hebrews 13:8, is "… the same yesterday, and today, and forever." If you have not repented of your sins and dedicated your life to God, I urge you to do so now.

The Government Shuts Down Again

There was a time when it was a rare thing for the United States government to shut down. Prior to 2018, there had not been a government shutdown since 2013. Prior to 2013, there had not been a government shutdown since December 15, 1995, through January 6, 1996. (9) Yet, even as I write this newsletter, the United States is in the throes of a partial government shutdown, which is the third shutdown of 2018. This shutdown, which began on December 22, 2018, came about because President Trump and the Democrats in the Senate could not reach an agreement over the procurement of funding to build a wall along the country's southern border with Mexico. Trump, for his part, is demanding five billion dollars in government funding, which would be used to install about 215 miles of barrier along the border. (10) On December 25, 2018, Trump pledged to keep the government closed until funding for a wall or a fence is delivered. "I can't tell you when the government is going to be open. I can tell you it's not going to be open until we have a wall, a fence, whatever they want to call it," Trump insisted. (11)

Government shutdowns can sometimes end very suddenly. For example, the shutdown of February 9, 2018, only lasted nine hours. (12) It is possible that the current shutdown might be over by the time you read this newsletter. Nevertheless, it is evident that the United States government of today is highly dysfunctional. It is also evident that there is a very large segment of the American population that desperately wants to see a southern border wall built. As of this writing, donations to fund the wall totaling over 17 million dollars, have been collected from private citizens over the course of nine days. (13)

The Anxiety And Turmoil Of This Modern Age

The Anxiety And Turmoil Of This Modern Age

"Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?"

Matthew 6:25-27

"Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:6-7

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine the anxiety and turmoil of this modern age. The world in which we live is astonishing in many ways. Technology has permanently altered our lives, and in the United States we have become accustomed to easy and quick access to the things we want and need. In the advanced fast-paced society of today, anxiety has become prevalent. According to a recent report, nearly one-third of American young people and adults suffer from an anxiety disorder. (1) Furthermore, a poll conducted in May 2018 found that 39 percent of respondents reported a higher level of anxiety over the course of the last year, while another 39 percent claimed to have anxiety levels equal to the previous year. Only 19 percent of respondents reported feeling less anxious. (2)

Why are the American people so stressed? It is easy to point a finger at the rancorous American political climate and the distressing news reports, which are crafted in a way to not only tell the audience what to think, but also to instill anxiety. Yet, recent reports have shown that there is a new culprit which is also instilling anxiousness in the United States and around the world: The widespread overuse of social media websites such as Facebook and Twitter. A report published in November 2018 by Marketwatch indicates that spending too much time on Facebook can cause depression. (3) The article cites a study conducted at the University of Pennsylvania which found that not only did the overuse of Facebook cause depression in those whom they examined, but their symptoms of depression dropped when the study's participants began limiting their usage of Facebook. "It was striking," said Professor Melissa Hunt at the University of Pennsylvania. "What we found over the course of three weeks was that rates of depression and loneliness went down significantly for people who limited their (social media) use." (4) Remarkably, an experiment conducted by a local CBS affiliate in the state of Minnesota discovered that for some individuals, their blood pressure and heart rate immediately rose when they signed on to Facebook. "When you're talking about the people using it day in and day out, it's not appearing to be very healthy for them actually," said clinical psychologist Dr. Matthew Syzdek. (5)

With the advent of smartphones, it has become easier than ever for consumers to check their social media accounts on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this easy access has led to addiction. A report published in 2016 indicates that smartphone users touch their phones an average of 2,617 times per day. This number includes every click, tap, or swipe on the devices, and for the heaviest users the number is even greater. The top 10 percent of smartphone users were found to be touching their devices an average of 5,427 times per day. (6) The overuse of smartphones and social media have seemingly caused a detrimental effect on the human attention span. In fact, recent studies claim that the average attention span of humans has fallen over the course of the last fifteen years from a meager twelve seconds to an even paltrier eight seconds. (7) Sadly, such a short attention span cannot efficiently process complex information, which in effect, dulls the ability of the human mind to think. Those who cannot think for themselves will be told what to think by someone or something else.

Needless to say, those with short attention spans are going to have a difficult time waiting on God. Yet, we know that quiet times of prayer, reflection, and waiting are how we are strengthened by the Almighty. In Isaiah 40:28-31 we read, "Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? There is no searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint." Waiting on God and following the prompting of His Spirit is the most effective way to overcome anxiety in this world. I urge every reader of this newsletter to repent of your sins if you have not yet done so, dedicate your life to God, and put your faith in Him. In so doing, you will find a peace that passes all understanding.

Conflict And Outrage In An Age Of Discontent

"For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."

Titus 3:3-7

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

John 13:34-35

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid."

John 14:27

"I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live."

Deuteronomy 30:19

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine the happenings of a world where conflict is an everyday occurrence and throngs of people around the world are increasingly on edge. The time period we live in today could accurately be called an "age of discontent." Indeed, protests have become so widespread that it has become difficult to keep up with all of the reasons people are angry on any given day. In the month of July, protests have taken place for an assortment of reasons in Haiti, Iraq, Nicaragua, Iran, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Sadly, these protests sometimes devolve into violent riots.

Such was the case in the Caribbean nation of Haiti on July 6, 2018, when massive protests and riots broke out in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. Following the announcement of a price hike for oil-based fuels, including a 38 percent increase for gasoline, a 47 percent increase for diesel, and a 51 percent increase for kerosene, angry Haitians filled the streets. The volatile mob burned tires, blocked roads, attacked hotels, and damaged businesses (1) while leaving tourists and missionaries unable to travel and no doubt fearful for their lives. (2) At least three people were killed, including two rioters who were shot by the police and a security guard who was killed by angry Haitians. (3) The riots in Haiti forced the nation's Prime Minister Jack Guy Lafontant to resign before he could be forced out of office, and fuel prices were returned to normal. Oddly enough, this entire fiasco was caused by the International Monetary Fund, or IMF. It was the IMF who mandated these price increases, (4) which demonstrates just how dangerous these globalist organizations can be. Who is really controlling Haiti? Is it the Haitian government or is it the International Monetary Fund? Even after the upheaval, the IMF still expects the Haitian government to raise fuel prices, although they say it should be done gradually moving forward. (5)

The Manifold Threats Of Our Time

The Manifold Threats Of Our Time

"The Lord is on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me? The Lord taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see my desire upon them that hate me. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in princes."

Psalm 118:6-9

"We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the Lord fulfil all thy petitions. Now know I that the Lord saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the Lord our God."

Psalm 20:5-7

"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths."

Proverbs 3:5-6

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will direct our focus to the manifold threats facing our world today. In this time of great conflict, there are threats of war, threats of disease, and threats against morality as the devil continues to exert spiritual pressure on the world's population. We also see the United States of America undergoing a drastic change as the older generations of Americans gradually cede control of the nation's direction to a younger generation with much different values. This reality has been in the making for decades. In fact, my father, Pastor David J. Meyer, used to warn that socialism and communism were being taught at American schools and universities. People found this claim difficult to believe, but current trends indicate that his assertion was correct. We are now seeing the results of mass indoctrination wherein a large segment of the American population favors a socialist government.

In an article published by The National Review in March 2017, the headline declares that"Socialism's Rising Popularity Threatens America's future." According to the report, a survey of Americans aged eighteen years and older found that four out of ten now say they"prefer socialism." (1) In a more recent survey conducted by the University of Chicago, it was revealed that 45 percent of respondents aged eighteen to thirty-four have a favorable view of socialism. (2) Amazingly enough, the membership roll at the Democratic Socialists of America has increased from 5,000 members to 35,000 members since November 2016. (3) Additionally, numerous political and judicial candidates are now openly proclaiming their affiliation with the socialist movement, a fact noted by the New York Times in April 2018. This includes a criminal court judge nominee in Houston, Texas, by the name of Franklin Bynum who proudly said, "Yes, I'm running as a socialist. I'm a far-left candidate. What I'm trying to do is be a Democrat who actually stands for something and tells people, 'Here's how we are going to materially improve conditions in your life.'" (4) Other candidates include Kaniela Ing in Hawaii who is running for Congress and Gayle McLaughlin who is running for Lieutenant Governor in California. (5) A pair of socialist candidates running for the state's House of Representatives also notched victories in the Pennsylvania midterm primary election on May 15, 2018. This development prompted Arielle Cohen, the co-chair of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, to boast,"We're turning the state the right shade of red tonight." (6) Regarding this trend toward socialism in America, Jorge Roman-Romero of the Democratic Socialists of America chapter in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was quoted as saying, "People are more willing to come out and say 'I'm a Democratic socialist running.' It's not a liability to say that anymore." (7)

Under a socialist system, the government controls the means of production and distribution of goods. Therefore, it is impossible for a private citizen to own a business, and there is no free enterprise. It is the government that decides what is best for the people and there is no right to self-determination for the common man. It is a system where people must turn to the government for their needs, and under such circumstances, the government becomes the god of the people. Interestingly enough, research published in April 2018 claims that the larger a government is, the less likely it is that people will be religious or believe in God. The report which is entitled "Religion as an Exchange System: The Interchangeability of God and Government in a Provider Role" declares the following: "If a secular entity provides what people need, they will be less likely to seek help from God or other supernatural entities." It later goes on to say,"The power and order emanating from God can be outsourced to the government." (8) Thus, when a country has a socialist or communist government, the more secular and atheistic the people become. Could such a culture become a reality in the future for the United States of America?

The Turmoil Of This Modern Age

The Turmoil Of This Modern Age

"Then they went out to see what was done; and came to Jesus, and found the man, out of whom the devils were departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid."

Luke 8:35

"Lord, have mercy on my son: for he is lunatick, and sore vexed: for ofttimes he falleth into the fire, and oft into the water. And I brought him to thy disciples, and they could not cure him. Then Jesus answered and said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I suffer you? Bring him hither to me. And Jesus rebuked the devil; and he departed out of him: and the child was cured from that very hour."

Matthew 17:15-18

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."

II Timothy 1:7

"Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy."

I Peter 1:13-16

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine the events of our day and consider what God's Word has to say about the present state of mankind. The world is filled with constant reminders that far too many men and women alive today are bereft of any spiritual decency. On February 14, 2018, we were again reminded of this sad reality when a 19-year-old man known as Nikolas Cruz marched into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and used a semi-automatic rifle to massacre seventeen people. (1)

By all accounts, this young man, who is now under arrest, is a very disturbed individual. According to a report published by ABC News, Cruz told authorities that he heard voices telling him to commit this treacherous attack. (2) Further reports indicate that Cruz had been diagnosed with autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. He also had a history of self-harm and was once reported to the authorities for cutting his arms in full public view on the social networking website known as Snapchat. (3) Over the course of seven years, police officers were dispatched to the home of Nikolas Cruz an astounding thirty-nine times, (4) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, or FBI, received a tip in January 2018 regarding his alarming behavior. "On January 5, 2018, a person close to Nikolas Cruz contacted the FBI's Public Access Line (PAL) tip-line to report concerns about him. The caller provided information about Cruz's gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting," the FBI said in an official statement. A Great Spiritual Strain In Our World

"The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

Psalm 14:2-3

"And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it."

Job 1:7

"But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

James 4:6-7

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen."

I Peter 5:8-11

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine our troubled modern world wherein the depravity of mankind is presently on full display. As Christians, we know that we live in a wicked world. This was the case even thousands of years ago when King David, under the inspiration of God, wrote in Psalm 14:2-3, "The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one." To further emphasize the point, the Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 3:23, "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Thankfully, God has extended His mercy and His grace to us, and has implemented His perfect plan of salvation to set us free from the bondage of sin. Nevertheless, we see the footprints of Satan all over the world while he walks "to and fro in the earth." As our evil adversary goes forth, he inspires people to do his bidding. Thus, much of the pain and misery we see in this world is inflicted by people under demonic influence.

Although Satan has manifested himself in subtle and hidden ways throughout history, we live in a world today where his influence is clearly seen. In fact, there are a growing number of individuals in the United States who knowingly and unabashedly worship Satan. This is evident in a headline published by the Los Angeles Times on January 5, 2018, which declares, "A new generation of L.A. Satanists finds community in blasphemous times." (1) This article portrays Satanism as a cool and edgy religion, which is flourishing in Los Angeles, California. "In these times, a lot of people want to not feel helpless. And Lucifer was the original rebel angel," declared Satanist Zachary James. (2)

The mission statement of the Church of Satan, which was founded by Anton LaVey in the 1960s, states in their mission that they are"dedicated to the acceptance of man's true nature - that of a carnal beast, living in a cosmos that is indifferent to our existence." (3) According to Ruth Waytz, who is an official at the blasphemous religious organization, their group is well organized. "Our writers, directors, producers, and designers lead the charge on our real-world individualist approach - not some spooky, occultnik mumbo jumbo, which is often anti-satanic and mired in mysticism,"Waytz said. (4) Satanism and other forms of the occult, including Wiccan witchcraft, are strong proponents of feminism. "In terms of the aesthetics of the occult, it's everywhere you look. There are so many young women especially who use occult imagery to define their identity," said movie director Anna Biller. She then went on to say, "What I'm trying to do is to transform the witch from a figure of male fear and fantasy into a figure of female power and sexuality. For some women it represents healing, for others, raw power, for others, the freedom to be unorthodox or to find their own spirituality outside of the family system." (5)

Considering the fact that the state of California is the epicenter of Satanism in the United States, it is not surprising that numerous figures in the entertainment industry are or were Satanists. This was true even in the 1960s and 1970s when people such as the famous singer Sammy Davis Jr. and the actress Jayne Mansfield were members of the Church of Satan. There is likely a sizable contingent of Satanists who work in Hollywood behind the scenes. The Church of Satan even maintains a list of recommended movies on its official website. (6) Various entertainers over the years have professed to be Satanists, including pianist and singer Liberace, professional wrestler Jonathan Rechner, singer Marc Almond of the band Soft Cell, and guitarist Matt Skiba who has worked with the bands Alkaline Trio and Blink 182. (7) Exposure to Satanism only seems to be intensifying in this present time. In addition to the story in the Los Angeles Times, another article was published by The Guardian, which declares in the headline, "Hell freezes over: how the Church of Satan got cool." (8) The pro-Satanic slant of the article is evident from the very first paragraph."Disappointingly, Chelsea Clinton has denied she and her husband practice Satanism. Her tweet wishing the folks at the Church of Satan a happy new year should not be taken as endorsement of the dark lord's manifold heresies," the article states. (9) It is odd that Chelsea Clinton would do such a thing. Even if she is not a member, she must not find the devilish church to be terribly offensive.

A Stressed And Anxious World

A Stressed And Anxious World

"Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?"

Matthew 6:25-27

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love."

` I John 4:18

"Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem. And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it."

Zechariah 12:2-3

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will again look at today's current events and the happenings of a stressed and anxious world. There is no doubt that the people of the United States have a lot on their minds lately. There is great anxiety as the masses despair over this country's government, and there is great animosity between people due to differing political, religious, and philosophical beliefs and opinions. A Gallup poll published in December 2017 reported that 79 percent, or an astounding eight out of ten Americans who responded to the poll, are "afflicted by stress." (1) This stress is common in the United States despite the fact that reports indicate the American economy is strong, and the official rate of unemployment is only 4.1 percent. (2) In 2017 the unemployment rates in Alabama, California, Hawaii, Mississippi, Texas, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Maine, North Dakota, Oregon, and Tennessee fell to their lowest points in forty years (3) while employers around the country are now having a difficult time finding enough workers to fill open positions. (4) Based on these reports, this should indicate a happy and prosperous time in the United States of America. Why are stress levels so high? Perhaps it is the sharp acrimony the American people have towards each other or the constant threat of war that dominates headlines in the United States.

Amazingly enough, researchers have found that an active prayer life and having a close connection to God is an effective method to relieve stress. "Where the perception of God is secure, warm and loving, then prayer is associated with positive mental health outcomes and coping with stressors. But when the perception of God is distant or disconnected, prayer is associated with negative outcomes," said Blake V. Kent of Baylor University in Waco, Texas. (5) In Luke 18:1 Jesus taught us that "men ought always to pray, and not to faint." Thus, we find in Scripture the necessity of an ongoing and active prayer life. My father would often say that "prayer is a heart-to-heart talk with God." As such, we have a direct connection to our God and are strengthened by that connection when we pray.

Conversely, when people do not have a strong connection to God, they are often not only stressed but fearful. This problem is further amplified by a widespread interest in occult superstitions. On December 20, 2017, USA Today published an article with a headline stating, "Dec. 21 will be the worst day of 2017, astrologers say." The article then cites an astrologer who claimed that this day, which happened to be a witches' holiday known as the Winter Solstice, was going to be especially awful because of the position of the constellation Capricorn and the planet Saturn in relation to the sun. (6) These vain superstitions often dictate what people will or will not do and cause occult-minded people to alter their plans. The aforementioned article even suggested that American President Donald Trump would not sign a new tax reform bill on this day because it would be a bad time to start something new. (7) Whether or not President Trump is prone to these occult superstitions, I cannot say. However, former First Lady, Hillary Clinton certainly is. Even the liberally-inclined fact-checking website known as Snopes admits that Clinton used to commune with the dead spirit of her hero, Eleanor Roosevelt. (8) President Ronald Reagan and his wife Nancy were also known to have a keen interest in astrology. (9) Thus, just as the ancient kings of Babylon, such as Nebuchadnezzar, had astrologers, prominent figures in Washington, D.C., also have theirs.

While the behavior of superstitious people is dictated by fear, it is not so among God's people. In I John 4:18 we are told, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." To be truly set free from fear and superstition, we must submit our lives to God and follow our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. In so doing, we will also find the strength to overcome the stressful condition of our world. I urge every reader of this newsletter to repent of your sins if you have not already done so and dedicate your life to God.

A World With Many Dangers, Toils, And Snares

A World With Many Dangers, Toils, And Snares

"Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners. Awake to righteousness, and sin not; for some have not the knowledge of God: I speak this to your shame."

I Corinthians 15:33-34

"Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light. See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil."

Ephesians 5:14-16

"He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known."

Proverbs 10:9

"The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one."

Psalm 14:1-3

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will assess the distressing conditions of this age, and recent events which continue to show that we live in a world with many dangers, toils, and snares. The troubles facing the people of earth are pervasive. In Europe many areas have become lands of anger and discontent spurred by the arrival of 1.5 million migrants from the Middle East and Africa since 2015. (1) Research from the Pew Research Center which was published in June 2017 shows that 90 percent of the Greeks who were surveyed disapprove of the European Union's handling of the migrant crisis. The disapproval percentages in other European nations were also high, including 80 percent of respondents in Italy, 78 percent in Sweden, and 67 percent in Spain. (2) Another indicator of discontent in Europe was the election of billionaire Andrej Babis as Prime Minister of the Czech Republic in October 2017. The new leader has said that the Czech Republic should not have to accept refugees, a policy which has apparently resonated with the nation's people. (3) Reports from the media have described the new Prime Minister as a "Czech Donald Trump." (4) Meanwhile, there is trouble in Catalonia as the people of this region have sought to declare independence from Spain in recent weeks. On October 1, 2017, the Catalan people held a referendum in which 90 percent of voters favored independence. The government of Spain declared the vote illegal even as Spanish police forces worked to disrupt the voting process, and in so doing, injured 844 people. (5) Even as Spanish officials have promised to discipline the disobedient citizens of Catalonia, secessionists in the region have urged Catalans to engage in "massive civil disobedience." (6)

There is also great turmoil in the South American country of Venezuela. Due to the socialist government policies of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez and his successor President Nicolas Maduro, a full 82 percent of the people in Venezuela now live in poverty. (7) Even as food shortages and violence take their toll, thousands have fled to other countries in an effort to escape their dire circumstances. "Everything there has turned ugly. There's hunger and crime. You can't leave your house after 5 p.m. because you're going to be robbed or killed," said a woman who left Venezuela for the brighter prospects of Peru. (7)

Confusion And Incivility In Our World

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the Lord search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."

Jeremiah 17:9-10

"O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things."

Matthew 12:34-35

"Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment."

Matthew 22:37-38

"For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints."
I Corinthians 14:33

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will examine a world run amok with confusion, chaos, and incivility. At this present time, there are throngs of people walking about in a state of confusion, seemingly uncertain of many things, including something as simple and basic as one's gender. In Genesis 1:27 we read, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." Yet, today we live in a world where some women want to be men, some men want to be women, and some people do not want to be either man or woman. Those who refuse to be called either male or female are now referred to as "non-binary" human beings. (1)

In June 2017 it was announced that Oregon will become the first state in the United States to allow individuals to choose a third gender for their state issued identification or driver's license. On these identification cards, male will be marked with the traditional M, female will be marked with an F, and the third "non-binary" gender will be marked with an X. (2) The new policy came about largely on the efforts of a man named Jamie Shupe who became the first person in the United States to be legally pronounced neither male nor female in 2016. Shupe had previously tried to transition to the female gender but eventually decided he did not want to be female either. "I only became a female because I had no other choice. All of the systems channeled me in that direction, both medical and government, until I took a stand against that. It wasn't until I got to Portland [Oregon] and got exposure to the queer community that I then understood how wrong all what had been done to me was," Shupe stated. Despite Shupe's claim to be neither male nor female, he seems to acknowledge that he was born with a male body. "Turning a male body, especially an older male body into female, I think it really sets the stage for people committing suicide. I mean you had to maintain a hyper-feminine appearance 24-7 or you were back to getting called sir," Shupe lamented. (3) It is my personal belief that this individual is being tormented by evil spirits. Shupe even uses the pronouns "they," "them," and "their" as personal identifiers which suggests that there is more than one evil spirit involved. Needless to say, Shupe does not think highly of Christians. "All the Bible-thumpers believe that there's only males and females according to the Bible. I'm the person who destroyed that in the United States," Shupe boasted. (4) The new policy will take effect in Oregon on July 1, 2017. (5)

Following Oregon's lead the American capital city of Washington, D.C., also announced that they will begin issuing identification cards and driver's licenses with a non-binary gender option on June 26, 2017. (6) A similar change in policy might soon be implemented in the state of New York where New York Assistant Speaker of the House Felix Ortiz has introduced legislation that if passed would allow a non-binary gender designation on driver's licenses and identification cards. "Our governmental agencies should reflect the society we live in. While this change may seem small, it is a step forward to change the rigid mindset often faced by many today," Ortiz stated. (7)

Why are a growing number of men finding it so painful to be part of the male gender? In recent decades, we have seen an effort from the liberal left to villainize manhood. We are often told that men are responsible for all of the world's woes and that being a masculine man is a bad thing. Leftists frequently refer to this so-called problem as "toxic masculinity." (8) Consider the words of the famous singer and actress known as Bette Midler who posted a message online in response to a recent terrorist attack in London. In this message, Midler wrote: "More sorrow and grief at the hands of madmen. Men and religion are worthless." (9) Instructors at college campuses will often preach against masculinity too. For example, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill published a website in 2016 which asked, "How has the concept of masculinity contributed to the perpetration of violence in our society?" (10) It was also reported that students at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, were subjected to a mandatory orientation video which declares that the three most damaging words a boy can hear are "be a man." (11) Is it any wonder that some men are so desperate to not be members of the male gender?

"God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands; Neither is worshipped with men's hands, as though he needed any thing, seeing he giveth to all life, and breath, and all things; And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation; That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be not far from every one of us: For in him we live, and move, and have our being; as certain also of your own poets have said, For we are also his offspring."

Acts 17:24-28

"Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you. And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty."

II Corinthians 6:17-18

"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils."
I Timothy 4:1

"And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?"

Luke 18:7-8

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will once again examine the present condition of our world, which has been undergoing a conditioning process for decades. The hearts and minds of the people have been educated, indoctrinated, and prepared to accept globalism, and by extension, a one world government. I can recall my father, Pastor David J. Meyer, warning on many occasions that efforts were underway to establish a global government. In the past such discussion was written off as a "conspiracy theory" by a majority of people, but for those who care to look, we can see globalist forces in plain sight and out in the open today.

In February 2017 prominent globalists from around the world gathered in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, for a three-day event known as the World Government Summit. (1) This gathering was attended by representatives from more than 130 countries and featured more than ninety famous speakers including, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund Christine Lagarde, (2) and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. (3) Guterres, who is openly and proudly a socialist, was the prime minister of Portugal from 1995 until 2002. (4) Speaking at the summit in Dubai, Guterres told his audience, "Improving governance and improving confidence between governments and people is essential, and it is a condition to improve the confidence in the relations between countries. We live today in a world that is no longer bipolar, no longer unipolar, but it is not yet multipolar. It's really chaotic." He then later went on to say, "In a world in which everything is global, in which the problems are global - from climate change to the movement of people - there is no way countries can do it by themselves. We need global responses, and global responses need multilateral institutions able to play their role." Of course, if you read between the lines, it is obvious that Guterres is calling for a one world government. In a nod to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda, Guterres also declared that sustainable development is necessary for peace and security to take hold in our world. (5)

As a result of the Summit in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates in collaboration with the United Nations has now established what they call The World Council of Happiness. This rather strange entity seems determined to foist their version of happiness on the entire world. "Happiness is a commendable infection. We want the peoples of the world to be afflicted with it so they could be blessed with goodness. This may require a tangible change in the culture of the government work," said Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice-president and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Dubai. He further went on to say, "Our initiative to launch the World Council of Happiness has been derived from our values and our conviction that it is necessary to bring happiness and positive values to people." (6) Truly, the United Nations is an organization with many tentacles, insomuch that it can be difficult to keep up with all of its offshoots. The United Nations branch known as the Sustainable Development Solution Network is providing administrative support to the World Council of Happiness, (7) which is then further divided into the following six sub councils: The Council of Happiness and Health, The Council of Happiness and Education, The Council of Personal Happiness, The Council of Happiness in Work Environment, The Council of Happiness Measurement, and The Council of Happy Cities. USA: A Nation In Turmoil And Distress!

"And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it."

Daniel 8:27

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust."

Matthew 5:43-45

"Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another."

Matthew 24:9-10

"For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life."

Titus 3:3-7

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will once again scrutinize the current events of our day. At the very outset of this newsletter, I will say that many of the things we see happening today are very distressing. When we consider the violence and the hatred that is now so common in the United States, it can be troubling to the point that to ponder our country's condition leaves one feeling ill. In this regard, I can relate to Daniel the prophet, who after being given a vision of the future reported in Daniel 8:27, "And I Daniel fainted, and was sick certain days; afterward I rose up, and did the king's business; and I was astonished at the vision, but none understood it." What Daniel saw in his vision was so distressing that it made him physically ill for days.

In Matthew 24 our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ gives us many details regarding the condition of the world in the latter days of the earth just before His second coming. One of the predominant characteristics of that time period is prevalent hatred. This is a hatred not only for God's people, but also a hatred that wicked men have for each other as they turn on each other and betray one another. Matthew 24:9-10 tells us, "Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another."

As it happens, one of the characteristics of the people now manifesting in these turbulent times is widespread hatred. This hatred often leads to violence, and this violence has caused great turmoil in the United States. Sadly, this tension runs along racial lines, and there is especially great animosity between black Americans and American police forces. In fact, a pair of officer-involved shootings in early July 2016 have led to unrest all over the country. The first incident occurred on July 5, 2016, when a 37 year-old black man, known as Alton Sterling, was shot in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. (1) The second shooting occurred the very next day on July 6, 2016, when a 32 year-old black man by the name of Philando Castile was shot by a police officer during a routine traffic stop in a suburb of St. Paul, Minnesota. (2) Video evidence suggests that both shootings were likely unwarranted and involved excessive force by the officers involved in the incidents. In the case of Castile, it has been reported that the individual was shot while reaching for his wallet to retrieve his identification, an act which the officer misinterpreted as an attempt to reach for a firearm. Evil Men And Seducers Waxing Worse And Worse!

"But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus."

II Timothy 3:13-15

"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light; Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy."

I Peter 2:9-10

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Romans 12:1-2

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will consider the current events of our day and the impact they are having around the world. Is the world we live in today getting better, or are conditions on this planet actually growing worse? We often hear notable figures tell us how wonderful everything is in this modern age. This is something that President Barack Obama has done on more than one occasion. Speaking at the United Nations in September 2014, Obama was quoted as saying, "I often tell young people in the United States that despite the headlines, this is the best time in human history to be born, for you are more likely than ever before to be literate, to be healthy, to be free to pursue your dreams." (1) This sentiment was recently echoed by United States Secretary of State John Kerry. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland in January 2016, Kerry told his audience, "We are not living in a new normal and we don't have to. We are not the prisoners of a predetermined future. Change is occurring in our world for the better and it is occurring faster, moving faster than ever before." (2) Despite the assertions of Barack Obama and John Kerry, the real life experience for billions of people around the globe shows that conditions are not changing for the better. In fact, we live in a world today where the persecution of Christian people is at an all time high, while moral values seem to be disappearing, and even the often praised global economy is on shaky footing.

On January 20, 2016, it was reported by an organization known as Open Doors that the Christian population in numerous countries is suffering persecution at an intensity never before seen in modern history. "The 2016 World Watch List documents an unprecedented escalation of violence against Christians, making this past year the most violent and sustained attack on Christian faith in modern history," said David Curry who is the chief executive officer at Open Doors. He later went on to say, "The levels of exclusion, discrimination and violence against Christians is unprecedented, spreading and intensifying. Christians, longing to stay in their home countries are being forced to flee for their lives and for their children's lives." (3) Persecution is most common in Islamic countries where Christians are the minority. However, communist countries such as China and North Korea are also hostile to Christianity. It is estimated that between 50,000 and 70,000 Christians are imprisoned and subjected to hard labor in North Korea. (4)

I have a feeling that those who are enduring such persecution would likely disagree with John Kerry's belief that "change is occurring in our world for the better." Indeed, such a notion is actually contradictory to Scripture. We are warned by the Apostle Paul in II Timothy 3:13, "But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived."

The Destruction Of The Family Unit In America!

Life in the United States has changed drastically since the turn of the century. One of the most significant changes we have seen is the destruction of the family unit. It is a bit ironic that homosexual couples have waged such a fierce battle in recent years for the right to "marry" their same-sex partners while an increasing number of straight couples are forgoing marriage altogether. As a result, a high percentage of children born in the United States today are born out of wedlock. This trend was noted by the New York Times about four years ago in an article published on February 17, 2012. At the time, the report noted that more than one half of all births by women under the age of 30 occurred outside of marriage, a development which the paper referred to as "the new normal." (5) Recent data published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, indicates that an astounding 40.6 percent of all births in the United States now occur out of wedlock. (6) Amazingly enough, this prevailing tendency does not appear to be a concern for most Americans. A study conducted by Gallup in May 2015 found that 61 percent of respondents said it is morally acceptable to have children outside of marriage. (7)

Of course, this would not be happening if people adhered to the Biblical standards on intimacy. However, unwed mothers and broken families are not the only problems. Behavior that has now become normal in much of the world, including the United States, has led to an astounding proliferation of sexually transmitted diseases, or STDs. According to data published by the CDC in October 2014, about 50.5 million men and 59.5 million women in the United States are infected with an STD. (8) To put things in perspective, the United States Census Bureau estimates that the entire population of the United States at this present time is about 322 million people. (9)

Sadly, sin often leads to more sin, and the most heinous sin of all has become common in the land today. The barbaric practice of abortion is not only accepted and tolerated in the United States, it is praised and promoted. Insomuch that American President Barack Obama issues a statement each year commemorating the United States Supreme Court's 1973 decision to legalize abortion. On January 22, 2016, Obama issued the following declaration: "Today, we mark the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade, which affirmed a woman's freedom to make her own choices about her body and not intrude on private decisions made between a woman and her doctor. As we commemorate this day, we also redouble our commitment to protecting these constitutional rights, including protecting a woman's access to safe, affordable health care, and her right to reproductive freedom from efforts to undermine or overturn them. In America, every single one of us deserve the rights, freedoms, and opportunities to fulfill our dreams." (10) This decision that Obama chooses to commemorate has resulted in the loss of over 58 million innocent lives in the United States. (11)

Amazingly enough, there are abortion specialists in this country who seem to believe that God smiles down on them as they slaughter babies. In a recent letter to the editor of the Des Moines Register in Des Moines, Iowa, medical director for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland Jill Meadows wrote, "I am an abortion health care provider, and I am proud of what I do. It's a privilege to be a positive presence in a person's life at a time when she most deserves care and compassion." She later went on to write, "Planned Parenthood provides evidence-based, compassionate, non-judgmental, high quality, affordable reproductive health care. It is time for people who are anti-abortion to stop using terror, lies, hate rhetoric, misinformation, and violence against us. Regardless, we will not be bullied and intimidated into abandoning the people who depend on us. I will continue to follow my God-given calling of being an abortion care provider. Our doors will stay open. No matter what." (12) This woman actually believes that God has called her to kill babies, and she is not the only one who has this warped point of view. Another article, written by a young doctor known as Carolyn Payne states, "Who wants to be an abortion provider? I do. And I don't have a nose-ring or a tattoo. I'm a 5' foot blonde from Ohio and my last boyfriend was a pastor. In fact, my Midwest, Christian upbringing is largely responsible for my belief that providing abortion services is one of the most meaningful ways I feel I can contribute to making the world a more fair and equal place for women." Payne later made the claim that performing her first abortion made her feel good. "Providing our first MVA (manual vacuum aspiration abortion) was a 'feel good procedure,' because we had successfully performed an intervention that changed a woman's life for the better!" (13) Perhaps these women have never read Matthew 18:14 in which Jesus makes the declaration, "Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish."

Is The Global Economy In Trouble?

For many of us, memories of the Great Recession of 2008 are still fresh in our minds. After all, 2008 was not so long ago. In recent years, we have been told that a recovery is in full-swing, and as such we need not worry about the global economy. However, the year of 2016 has already seen much economic instability, and prominent figures are warning that the situation could soon be much worse. One such figure is William White, who is the chairman of the review committee at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, or OECD. Speaking of the current condition of the global economy, Mr. White was quoted as saying, "The situation is worse than it was in 2007. Our macroeconomic ammunition to fight downturns is essentially all used up." He later went on to say, "Debts have continued to build up over the last eight years and they have reached such levels in every part of the world that they have become a potent cause for mischief. It will become obvious in the next recession that many of these debts will never be serviced or repaid, and this will be uncomfortable for a lot of people who think they own assets that are worth something." (14) Meanwhile, elitist billionaire George Soros has warned that the recent currency devaluation in China could lead to another global financial crisis. "China has a major adjustment problem. I would say it amounts to a crisis. When I look at the financial markets there is a serious challenge which reminds me of the crisis we had in 2008," Soros said. (15)

The United States is already facing numerous economic issues. In fact, the United States territory of Puerto Rico has defaulted on its debts. In a letter dated January 17, 2016, and addressed to United States House of Representatives speaker Paul Ryan, United States Secretary of the Treasury Jack Lew wrote, "I write to update you and your colleagues on Puerto Rico's debit crisis. I appreciate the recent commitment by congressional leadership to produce a responsible solution for Puerto Rico. In order to assist the 3.5 million Americans living in Puerto Rico, Congress must pass legislation for the President to sign into law before the end of March. Although there are many ways this crisis could escalate further, it is clear that Puerto Rico is already in the midst of an economic collapse." Lew further went on to write, "Puerto Rico is already in default. It is shifting funds from one creditor to pay another and has stopped payment altogether on several of its debts." (16)

I think it is safe to say we all have an appreciation for lower prices at the gas pump. However, the falling cost of oil has already wreaked havoc in the United States. According to a report by CNN, the low cost of oil has caused 42 American companies to file for bankruptcy since the beginning of 2015. (17) Additionally, an estimated 250,000 people have lost their jobs. (18) The problem could be further complicated in the coming months now that Western sanctions on the nation of Iran have been lifted, and Iran has the option to sell its oil to the world for the first time since 2012.

As is usual for the United States, a large federal deficit is projected for the year 2016. In fact, the deficit is set to increase by 24 percent this year to 544 billion dollars. The Congressional Budget Office, or CBO, estimates that the federal deficit in the year 2022 will exceed one trillion dollars. (19) Naturally, the national debt of the United States, has also continued to rise, and is now on the verge of reaching 19 trillion dollars. (20) At its current pace, the national debt will reach a mind-boggling 27 trillion dollars by the year 2025. (21)

We live in a world today that is driven by debt. It is not a uniquely American problem as there are many countries that have an enormous amount of debt. In fact, a report published by the World Economic Forum in July 2015 indicates that the top three most indebted nations in the world are Japan, Greece, and Italy. (22) Do the countries of this world ever intend to pay off their debt? I do not believe they do. A time will come when debt in the United States and other countries around the world will reach a point where it cannot progress any further. I believe that when that happens the economies of the world will collapse, and a new one-world economy will be ushered into existence. In an effort to entice the masses to accept this economic structure, we will be told that all previous debt is forgiven. However, the new system will envelope the entire world in a global, electronic, and cashless society. Those who refuse to accept this new order of things will find they are no longer able to buy or sell.

A World United In Conformity!

In last month's issue of The Last Trumpet, I covered in great detail the plans of the United Nations to unite the entire world under a system of global governance by the year 2030. Their agenda, which they call "The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," is an ambitious plan which includes a global economy, global educational system, and global healthcare. In January 2016, United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson promoted this new agenda. "Fundamental principles that underpin the new goals are interdependence, universality, and solidarity. They should be implemented by all segments of all societies, working together. No one must be left behind. People who are hardest to reach should be given priority," Eliasson said. He later went on to say, "We must be ready to think - and to act - comprehensively and holistically. Every actor, every country, every international and regional organization has a responsibility to work in synergy, translating the Agenda into practical realities on the ground." (23) Quite clearly, he is speaking of a one world government. Not only that, but it is apparent that the United Nations is expecting every man woman and child to conform to their specifications as docile and compliant global citizens. Within the text of the Agenda itself, we find the following words, "We reaffirm the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as well as other international instruments relating to human rights and international law. We emphasize the responsibilities of all States, in conformity with the Charter of the United Nations, to respect, protect, and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms for all…" (24) When I read these words, I cannot help but think of the Scripture we find in Romans 12:2, which declares, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God." Note that the Bible specifically calls for God's people to be non-conformists. In fact, Jesus Christ, when He was here in bodily form on this earth, was the greatest non-conformist who ever lived. The Scriptures never instruct the children of God to unite with the world. In reality, I Peter chapter 2 tells us that we are a "peculiar people."

Incidentally, those who were looking forward to Obama disappearing from the spotlight after his second presidential term ends may be in for a disappointment if Obama gets his way. News reports surfaced in January 2016 which indicate that Barack Obama is covertly campaigning to succeed Ban Ki-Moon as Secretary-General of the United Nations. This development raised the ire of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who reportedly said, "Wasn't eight years of having Obama in office enough?" (25)

Meanwhile, Pope Francis has continued his campaign to unite the religions of the world. Speaking in a video released in January 2016 for the Feast of Epiphany, Pope Francis is heard to say, "Most of the planet's inhabitants declare themselves believers. This should lead to dialogue among religions. We should not stop praying for it and collaborating with those who think differently." He then went on to say, "Many think differently, feel differently, seeking God or meeting God in different ways. In this crowd, in this range of religions, there is only one certainty that we have for all: we are all children of God." (26) The video also features a female lama who expresses her confidence in Buddha, a Jewish rabbi who expresses his belief in God, a priest who says he believes in Jesus Christ, and a Muslim who declares his faith in Allah. (27) Amazingly, the Pope's message directly contradicts the words of Jesus. In John 14:6 Jesus tells us, "… I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." In John 8:44, Jesus dispels the notion that every person is a child of God when he tells his opponents, "Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."

According to a report published by the Christian Post in January 2016, Pope Francis has been invited to visit the Great Mosque in Rome. In a visit with the Pope, Islamic leaders from the mosque reportedly told Pope Francis that it was an "honor to meet you and recognize your moral and spiritual leadership. We are honored to invite you to the Islamic Cultural Center." In response, Pope Francis told his guests that it would be "a great pleasure to visit you also, because it would be a great sign of our brotherhood." (28)

Chaos In Europe!

In recent months, much has been said about the migrant crisis in Europe. Due in a large part to the civil war in Syria, many migrants and refugees have left their nation of origin and have made Europe their new home. In fact, over one million migrants entered Europe in the year of 2015. Half of them came from Syria. (29) As would be expected, this sudden increase in population has required an enormous amount of resources and has put a significant strain on the infrastructure in European communities. Amazingly enough, the aforementioned George Soros offered his opinion on the crisis in Europe and has suggested that the European Union is on the verge of collapse. "There is plenty to be nervous about. As she (German Chancellor Angela Merkel) correctly predicted, the EU (European Union) is on the verge of collapse. The Greek crisis taught the European authorities the art of muddling through one crisis after another. This practice is popularly known as kicking the can down the road, although it would be more accurate to describe it as kicking a ball uphill so that it keeps rolling back down." Soros then went on to say, "Merkel correctly foresaw the potential of the migration crisis to destroy the European Union. What was a prediction has become the reality." (30)

As would be expected, the cultural differences between the migrants and the Europeans has been a cause for contention throughout the European Union. Sadly, it has become apparent that many of the migrants are rather rowdy men who have an extremely low opinion of women. Such attitudes led to a shocking attack on December 31, 2015. On this day, over 800 women were assaulted as they were taking part in a New Year's Eve celebration in Cologne, Germany. (31) The attacks, many of which were sexual in nature, were perpetrated by men of Arab or North African appearance. (32) German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed outrage over the attacks and promised that efforts would be made "to find the perpetrators as quickly and comprehensively as possible and punish them, regardless of their origin or background." (33) It is important to note that attacks such as these are not new. In fact, similar attacks occurred in Sweden in 2014. "It was a modus operandi that we had never seen before: large groups of young men who surround girls and molest them. In the cases where we were able to apprehend suspects, they were with a foreign background, newly arrived refugees age 17-20, who had come to Sweden without their families," said Stockholm city administration official Roger Ticoalu. (34) Needless to say, tensions are running high in Europe. The perpetrators of these assaults certainly did not help the cause of migrants seeking to garner support for their plight.

In closing, the news headlines of today make it very clear that the world we live in is not changing for the better. I am certain that we will face many challenges in the days ahead. Yet, we serve a gracious God who always gives us the strength we need to overcome the world. In I John 5:4 we read, "For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith." If you have not yet given your heart to God and dedicated your life to Him, I urge you to do so now. In so doing, He will give you the strength you need to endure to the end.

Thank you to all who support this ministry. We could not do what we do without your help, and we are thankful for each and every one of you. As always, we are here and ready to pray for your needs and we invite you to send us your prayer requests. We always give each request individual attention. We at Last Trumpet Ministries firmly believe that God hears us when we cry out to Him, and we have seen many answered prayers over the years. Grace and peace be unto you in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.
