Russia issues new threats to United States ahead of summit with Biden

Opinion: A lottery ticket as a reward for vaccination? That’s nuts

I’ve been trying to figure out the odds of my winning a cool $1.5 million and bidding my boss farewell. As a vaccinated Californian, I qualify for the vax lottery announced by Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday, in which the state is handing out 10 prizes of $1.5 million each to people vaccinated against COVID-19 whose numbers come up lucky in a drawing. There are a bunch of smaller prizes as well.

Newsom is following in the footsteps of Ohio, New York and a couple of other states in setting up lotteries in the hopes that a pecuniary incentive will outweigh their fears of or antipathy toward being vaccinated, despite what have so far proved to be remarkably effective vaccines against the new coronavirus. The problem is that the lotteries in the other states have not yet been shown to meaningfully raise vaccination rates.

It is breathtaking that so many Californians are now able to visit relatives, hug friends and generally cavort about unmasked and without thinking about how much viral load they might have been exposed to by lingering in a store for a half-hour.

Not so for unvaccinated people, however. A recent analysis by the Washington Post found that the virus is still surging, hospitalizing and killing people who reject the needle, spreading as fast among them as it did during the winter.

Those are the kinds of numbers I’d hope people would look at instead of the $1.5 million that they have so little chance of winning, they might as well count on being struck by lightning. Our society is quickly building a new kind inequity, two societies within our borders: the people who are almost entirely protected from death by COVID-19, and those who are at real risk.

My bigger concern is that people will look at neither number. If people’s worry is that the vaccines are dangerous to their long-term health — despite no evidence that they are — the long odds of winning money seem unlikely to change that.

It’s true that money is flowing in the state like it hasn’t since 1977 (the year before Proposition 13 passed). But once upon a time, $116 million, the amount Newsom plans on spending on the vax lottery, was a lot of money. Maybe it’s not so much compared with the new billions going to schools, preschool, universities. But this is a state so far from whole, it’s still a lot of money to the people who can’t afford a decent rental or fresh vegetables. It could buy the land for community urban farms, or fix up the state parks, which need a lot of attention.

How about this: The state sets up one-week dental clinics in various locations around the state and pays for people to get the dental care for which they lack insurance. Make the care contingent on either showing proof of vaccination or agreeing to receive the first dose on the spot. At least that way, we’d know we were accomplishing something for Californians’ health with the money. And we might just get a bunch of them protected against COVID-19 as well.

So far, about 22 million Californians have gotten at least one dose of the vaccine, which is enough to be entered. That makes my chances worse than 1 in 2 million. Guess I’d better keep acting nice to my editor.

Catholic Biden runs afoul of U.S. bishops by dropping Hyde Amendment from budget

President Biden drew a rebuke from U.S. bishops for omitting from his proposed $6 trillion budget the Hyde Amendment, which bars federal funding for abortion, breaking with a budgetary precedent in place since 1976.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement Friday by Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas, chairman of the Committee on Pro-Life Activities, urging Congress to “reject the Administration’s proposal to subsidize the deaths of unborn children.”

“I call on all government leaders to work toward a budget that truly builds up the common good of all,” he said. “This should include the many proposals in the President’s budget submission that seek to protect vulnerable people. And it must also preserve the Hyde Amendment and related provisions which have protected millions of unborn babies, and mothers in difficult circumstances, from the tragedy of abortion.”

The statement came shortly after Mr. Biden made good on his 2019 campaign promise to jettison the Hyde Amendment, reversing his previous support for the bipartisan measure included in every federal budget for 45 years.

The move was especially striking given that Mr. Biden is only the second Catholic president in U.S. history. In January, White House press secretary Jen Psaki described him as a regular churchgoer and “devout Catholic.”

“Joe Biden can claim to be a devout Catholic all he wants, but when it comes to choosing between his Church and the abortion industry, there’s never a doubt where his true devotion lies,” said CatholicVote in a Friday tweet.

The Hyde omission drew cheers from Democrats and pro-choice groups, including Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion provider.

“President Biden’s budget, which proposes ending the Hyde Amendment, is a historic step in the fight for reproductive freedom,” said Planned Parenthood president Alexis McGill Johnson in a statement.

Rep. Ayanna Pressley, Massachusetts Democrat, tweeted, “Budgets should be a reflection of our values. I am so glad to see @POTUS propose a budget free from the Hyde Amendment.”

“It’s time to pass a federal budget that affirms abortion care as the fundamental right that it is,” she added.

If Mr. Biden succeeds in lifting the Hyde ban, however, it probably won’t be through the Fiscal Year 2022 budget process, as Republicans made clear.

South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham, the ranking Republican on the Senate Budget Committee, described the president’s proposal as “dead on arrival,” citing its dramatic increases in non-defense spending and taxes.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Mr. Biden is “destroying decades of settled precedent by calling for direct taxpayer-funded abortion.”

The Hyde Amendment, which has been revised several times, prohibits Medicare, Medicaid, and other federal health programs from covering most abortions, with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.

Pro-life advocates cited a January poll by Marist/Knights of Columbus that found 77% of Americans oppose federal funding to promote abortions overseas and 58% oppose using taxpayer dollars to pay for U.S. abortions.

“Once a supporter of policies that protect the lives of the unborn and their mothers, President Biden today caters to the most extreme voices within his party,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List. “We urge our congressional allies to be fearless in fighting to preserve the common-ground Hyde principle.”

U.S. bishops called out Mr. Biden in March for failing to include Hyde Amendment language in the $1.9 trillion stimulus plan, a break with previous pandemic spending, calling it “unconscionable.”

The bishops are expected to discuss at their meeting next month whether pro-choice politicians should receive communion, an issue that has crested as Mr. Biden pursues aggressive policies aimed at expanding abortion access.

“Taxpayer-funded abortion represents a failure to serve women in their maternity by funding despair and death instead of hope and life,” said Archbishop Naumann in his statement. “These resources would be far better spent supporting women in crisis pregnancies and struggling new mothers so that no woman ever feels economic pressure to have an abortion."

Ingraham warns of coming 'climate lockdowns'

EXCLUSIVE: One-third of Americans unwilling to spend $1 to fight climate change

Two-thirds say they are very or somewhat concerned about climate, poll finds

President Biden wants to spend in excess of $1 trillion to combat climate change, but more than one-third of Americans are unwilling to chip in a single buck.

A poll of 1,200 registered voters released Tuesday by the Competitive Enterprise Institute found that 35% were unwilling to spend any of their own money to reduce the impact of climate change, with another 15% saying they would only go as high as $10 per month.

Another 6% said they would be willing to spend between $11 and $20 per month. At the other end of the spectrum were those who said they would part with between $901 and $1,000 per month on climate — they numbered 1%.

The results of the survey by CRC Research are consistent with previous polls showing that by and large, Americans are climate tightwads.

The 2019 AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs survey that found 57% were willing to spend an additional $1 per month on climate change, but only 28% would pay $10.

“This poll shows once again that Americans are unwilling to pay for the left’s anti-energy policies,” said CEI Center for Energy and Environment director Myron Ebell in a statement. “The more people learn about the Biden-Harris Blackout Agenda, the less support there will be for spending trillions of taxpayer dollars for no measurable benefits.”

The penny-pinching on global warming came even though 67% of respondents said they were very concerned or somewhat concerned about climate change.

That said, 53% said climate was not a factor in their 2020 election vote, while only 6% said it was the top issue.

A majority in the poll — 55% — approved of Mr. Biden’s job performance, while voters were split on the direction of the country: 50% said the nation was headed in the right direction and 48% said it was off track.

Mr. Biden unveiled during the 2020 campaign a $1.7 trillion climate plan, following up after taking office with a series of initiatives, including a $2 trillion infrastructure plan that would funnel $174 billion to electric vehicles, $100 billion to phase out fossil fuels, and $10 billion for a Civilian Climate Corps.

His plan calls for achieving a 50% reduction in emissions by 2030 from 2005 levels, and net-zero emissions throughout the economy by 2050.

CEI president and CEO Kent Lassman warned that Americans may be unwilling to make the economic sacrifices necessary to achieve such ambitious goals.

“When Americans unexpectedly pay more for gas and utilities because of events like electric grid failures and attacks on our pipelines and with the summer driving season ready to start next week, it is little wonder few voters clamor for costly new regulations. There is a lesson here if politicians are willing to listen,” said Mr. Lassman. “Americans recognize that the moment demands policies that lower regulatory barriers to foster economic resilience and to allow the space for an enduring recovery.”

Explosive study claims to prove Chinese scientists created CO

A bombshell new study claims to have proof that Chinese scientists created COVID-19 in a lab and then tried to reverse-engineer versions of the virus to make it look like it evolved naturally from bats.

British professor Angus Dalgleish and Norwegian scientist Dr. Birger Sørensen wrote they’ve had primary evidence “of retro-engineering in China” since last year, but were ignored by academics and major medical journals, The Daily Mail reported Saturday, citing the soon-to-be-published study.

Dalgleish is a London oncology professor known for breakthrough work on a vaccine for HIV. Sørensen is a virologist and chair of a pharmaceutical company, Immunor, which developed a coronavirus vaccine candidate called Biovacc-19. Dalgleish also has a financial stake in that company.

Their 22-page study accuses Chinese scientists of “deliberate destruction, concealment or contamination of data,” and claims scientists who spoke out were silenced and disappeared.

They say their conclusion is “beyond reasonable doubt,” The Sun reported.

Some scientists believe the virus could have emanated from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China.AFP via Getty Images

But they claim crucial scientific proof may not be found. “It appears that preserved virus material and related information have been destroyed,” the study says.

The study, to be published in the scientific journal Quarterly Review of Biophysics Discovery, is an explosive new chapter in the ongoing debate over the origins of the virus that has killed 5.5 million people around the world, including nearly 600,000 Americans, and wrecked havoc on the world’s economy.

The scientists claim they discovered ‘unique fingerprints’ in the virus while analyzing COVID-19 samples last year as they worked on a vaccine. Those markers, they say, could only come from manipulation in a laboratory.

Major scientific journals rejected their findings when they tried to publish. The scientific consensus for much of the pandemic was that the virus jumped naturally from bats or other animals to humans.

In recent weeks, that consensus was challenged when President Biden decided to reopen an investigation into the origins of the virus.

Pope launches green initiative, decrying "predatory attitude" toward planet

Pope Francis launched an initiative on Tuesday to make Catholic institutions ranging from families to universities to businesses environmentally sustainable in seven years, saying a "predatory attitude" toward the planet must end.

The Laudato Si Action Platform takes its name from the pope's landmark 2015 encyclical on the need to protect the environment, reduce wasteful lifestyles, stem global warming and

protect the poor from the effects of climate change.

At a news conference announcing the initiative, Cardinal Peter Turkson, head of the Vatican's development office, said the pope has been invited to attend the United Nations’ Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November in Glasgow, Scotland. Turkson indicated that the pope likely will attend.

In a video message for the launch, the pope said the initiative would be "a seven-year journey that will see our communities committed in different ways to becoming totally sustainable, in the spirit of integral ecology".

He decried "our predatory attitude, which makes us feel that we are masters of the planet and its resources, and authorises us to make irresponsible use of the goods God has given us."

The initiative will have focus groups including families, parishes and diocese, schools and universities, hospitals and other health care facilities, businesses, lay Catholic organisations, and orders of priests and nuns.

Since Laudato Si (Praised Be) was published in 2015, the Vatican and Catholic groups in the 1.3-billion-member Church around the world have taken many initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint.

The Vatican, the world's smallest state, has nearly eliminated single-use plastic, recycles most of its trash and makes its own compost for its gardens.

The Vatican development office will coordinate actions and provide guidance to groups and individuals.

Francis strongly supports the goals of the 2015 U.N. Paris accord to reduce global warming.

"These wounds (to the planet) manifest themselves dramatically in an ecological crisis without precedent, which affects the ground, the air, water and, in general, the ecosystem in which human beings live," Francis said.

COVID origin dissent 'suppressed' by intelligence community, House GOP report finds

By Bill Gertz - The Washington Times - Monday, May 24, 2021

U.S. intelligence failures related to the COVID-19 global pandemic include suppression of dissenting views on the origin of the virus, a recent report by House Republicans on the intelligence oversight panel concluded.

“We believe the [intelligence community] failed to properly support policymakers with timely products and analysis. Moreover, evidence shows that [its] failures continued in the pandemic’s aftermath,” the minority’s report stated in the annex to a study that linked China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) to the pandemic’s outbreak.

“Specifically, Republican members are aware of allegations that [U.S. intelligence agencies] suppressed dissenting views related to the origins of the pandemic and that the community relied upon ‘outside’ experts with concerning yet undisclosed entanglements,” the report said.

The report did not specify the outside experts who may have conflicts. However, the report singled out the EcoHealth Alliance, a New York-based virus research group and its president, Peter Daszak, one of the most outspoken critics of the theory that the virus came not from an animal host but was leaked accidentally or deliberately by researchers at the Wuhan lab.

EcoHealth Alliance received more than $100 million in U.S. government funding for coronavirus surveillance and research. Mr. Daszak also organized a letter signed by a group of scientists in the early days of the pandemic in 2020 in the British medical journal The Lancet criticizing the lab leak theory as a conspiracy.

The panel Republicans also said there are concerns “the U.S. government directly or indirectly engaged in dangerous scientific research with China despite knowing of the Chinese military’s participation.”

“The committee must determine what role, if any, the [intelligence agencies] had in monitoring or evaluating U.S. policy risks related to these efforts,” the report said.

The 20-page report made public last week is based on classified information obtained by the committee as part of its role in providing oversight of the 17 U.S. spy agencies. The report concluded that “significant circumstantial evidence” shows the virus most likely escaped from the WIV that has been engaged in research on viruses similar to COVID-19.

“Why is this important? This is about bioweapons. This is about biowarfare. This is very concerning,” California Rep. Devin Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told Fox News in releasing the report last week.

The report said that a contrary theory that the virus jumped from a bat to a host animal and then to humans, or was transmitted directly from bats to humans, lacks evidence.

The evidence the virus came from a laboratory includes China’s record of deadly virus leaks from laboratories, including an escape of SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, that is similar to COVID-19.

The virus escape theory also includes warnings from American diplomats in 2017 that WIV was engaged in dangerous research on viruses without using proper safety procedures.

Chinese military research at WIV also raises questions about whether the pandemic may be linked to what the GOP report said is “a documented biological weapons program” in China.

It had been known that several researchers at WIV were sickened with coronavirus-like symptoms in the fall of 2019. The Wall Street Journal reported over the weekend that three workers from WIV required hospitalization, and that Chinese officials had not disclosed the details of the sicknesses.

Doubts from Fauci

China’s government has denied the virus leaked from the WIV or any other laboratory. Beijing instead asserted the virus was introduced into China by the U.S. military, or arrived on frozen food packaging, something most virus experts say is unlikely.

Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and chief medical adviser to President Biden, initially criticized the lab leak theory. But in comments earlier this month just getting attention, Dr. Fauci said that now he is “not convinced” the virus originated naturally and called for continued investigation of the origin.

“I think we should continue to investigate what went on in China until we continue to find out to the best of our ability what happened,” Dr. Fauci said at a May 11 event organized by PolitiFact. “Certainly, the people who investigated it say it likely was the emergence from an animal reservoir that then infected individuals, but it could have been something else, and we need to find that out.”

Another factor fueling suspicions that the virus began in a laboratory has been Beijing’s multiple efforts to cover up the true circumstances of the outbreak that began in December 2019 in Wuhan, the report said.

Mr. Nunes invoked an intelligence community directive that analysis should be designed to prevent “bias, politicization or other issues” in reporting.

The report suggests intelligence agencies relied heavily on outside experts who misled the intelligence community into believing the virus most likely began as a naturally occurring disease outbreak.

For example, an April 30, 2020, statement by the Office of Director of National Intelligence said U.S. intelligence analysts “also concur with the wide scientific consensus that the COVID-19 virus was not man-made or genetically modified.” A year later in April 2021, Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told Congress the laboratory leak theory and animal transmission theory are the U.S. government’s two main hypotheses.

Until the testimony, many scientists and their supporters in the mainstream news media dismissed the virus lab leak as a conspiracy theory promoted by right-wing advocates.

A DNI spokeswoman did not return an email seeking comment.

Trump administration White House National Security Adviser Robert C. O’Brien said last summer that intelligence agencies failed to appreciate the seriousness of the virus early in the outbreak. Intelligence analysts in January 2020 were “still saying this is something like the flu and not as serious as SARS,” he said in an interview.

The GOP report noted there is scant evidence for the animal-origin theory and more for the lab-escape scenario.

“Chinese researchers have failed to find the original bat population or species from which [COVID-19] might have jumped, despite an intensive search and testing more than 80,000 animals,” the report said.

The Republican report stated that a recent scientific paper “indicates that the virus has several characteristics that, when taken together, are not easily explained by a natural zoonotic origin hypothesis.”

Republican questions

Mr. Nunes has asked Ms. Haines, the DNI, to provide all intelligence on the coronavirus, including reports produced by contractors and outside experts, as well as all intelligence behind the January 2021 State Department fact sheet — the first public report revealing evidence linking the pandemic to the WIV, including the institute’s ties to the Chinese military.

Republicans as also seeking any intelligence assessments of the dangers of so-called “gain of function” research being carried out in Chinese laboratories. Gain of function work involves modifying viruses to make them more infectious to humans, something that could lead to a pandemic like the one produced by COVID. The virus has infected an estimated 163 million people, killing more than 3.3 million people globally.

“Does the [intelligence community] understand the full scope of dangerous research conducted at the WIV? What are the … knowledge gaps?” Mr. Nunes asked in an April 16 letter to Ms. Haines.

Other information sought by Republicans includes details of collaboration between foreign scientists and the WIV and whether intelligence agencies produced any threat reports on the collaboration.

Suppression of intelligence among spy agency analysts was disclosed during the closing days of the Trump administration. Then-DNI John Ratcliffe in January accused U.S. intelligence analysts of politicization for playing down China’s role in meddling in the Nov. 3 presidential elections.

“From my unique vantage point as the individual who consumes all of the U.S. government’s most sensitive intelligence on the People’s Republic of China, I do not believe the majority view expressed by [intelligence community] analysts fully and accurately reflects the scope of the Chinese government’s efforts to influence the 2020 U.S. federal elections,” Mr. Ratcliffe stated in a Jan. 7 report.

Mr. Ratcliffe stated that “the politicization of China election influence reporting” resulted from “undue pressure being brought to bear on analysts who offered an alternative view based on the intelligence.”

Intelligence analysts instead highlighted Russian interference in the elections.

Ms. Haines, during a nomination hearing in January, vowed to prevent the politicization of intelligence. As DNI she promised to “send the clear message to the intelligence community that we are expected to produce apolitical, unvarnished intelligence.”

Six decades after John F. Kennedy became the first Roman Catholic president, his political ascent still reverberates in the American electorate. Generations of Catholics who had long been marginalized in the political process were emboldened to seek office, prompting a wave of Catholic lawmakers in the decades that followed.

Academic observers attribute the rising influence of Catholics to a new prominence in public life that emerged after Kennedy’s election. The number of Catholics in Congress has risen by roughly 50 percent since the Kennedy administration and in recent years, Catholics have consistently been the single largest religious denomination in Congress.

Members of all Christian faiths — a wide swath that includes Baptists, Episcopalians, Mormons and those unaffiliated with a specific denomination — equate to at least 87 percent of Congress. But it is Catholics, the biggest Christian denomination, who will hold at least 29 percent of the seats in the 117th Congress and two of the most powerful offices in government. With President-elect Joe Biden and Speaker Nancy Pelosi both Catholic, there will be a power dynamic not seen since the early 1960s when Kennedy and John W. McCormack made history as the first Catholic president and speaker.

“It’s emblematic of this long-term trend of Catholics running for office, getting elected to office, staying in office and being politically successful to the point that you could have so many Catholics in positions of power in Congress,” said Matthew Green, who chairs the politics department at Catholic University of America.

Catholics also have a growing influence on committee gavels. Seven House committee chairs are Catholic, up one from the 116th Congress. The group includes leaders with wide jurisdictions: Rosa DeLauro on Appropriations, Richard E. Neal on Ways and Means, Frank Pallone Jr. on Energy and Commerce and Jim McGovern on Rules.

The rise of Catholics in Congress has even outpaced the number of followers of the faith in the nation. The Pew Research Center in 2019 found that only 20 percent of Americans identified as Catholic, compared to 29 percent of lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

“Congress often is a lagging indicator of the changing religious makeup of the country,” Green said. He noted that Catholics were historically underrepresented in the Congress until the later part of the mid-20th century.

Most Catholics — including large numbers of Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants — were kept in a “religious and urban ghetto” in the 19th century, according to Rev. Matt Malone, the editor-in-chief of the Jesuit magazine America.

But that changed after Kennedy’s election to the highest office in the nation. “They were now being educated, moving into the middle classes, they were going to college; it makes sense now that they were also running for Congress, in places where traditionally they hadn’t,” Malone said.

Religious makeup of the 117th Congress

While Catholics continue to dominate much of the rank and file in Congress, Protestant leaders will still be prominent in the 117th Congress: Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris are all Baptists. And unspecified Protestants — Christians who do not identify with a specific denomination — make up the second-largest religious bloc behind Catholics at 20 percent.

Orthodox Christians, the smallest non-Protestant Christian denomination in Congress, will see their totals rise from five to seven, including incoming Indiana freshman Republican Victoria Spartz, a Ukrainian immigrant, and returning Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., who is an Antiochian Orthodox Christian.

Jewish lawmaker totals will be largely unchanged — and will depend on the outcome of the Senate runoff elections in Georgia, where Jewish Democratic candidate Jon Ossoff is challenging Republican Sen. David Perdue, a Methodist. Still, there was a notable shift in where Jewish lawmakers were elected in 2020.

While New York’s Jewish senator, Charles E. Schumer, is returning as Senate Democratic leader, the state is losing half of its Jewish delegation, including influential House members such as Appropriations Chairwoman Nita M. Lowey, who is retiring. Foreign Affairs Chairman Eliot L. Engel was defeated in a primary by Jamaal Bowman, one of 20 lawmakers who identify as unspecified or nonreligious. In Massachusetts, Jake Auchincloss, who is Jewish, was elected to the seat being vacated by fellow Democrat Joseph P. Kennedy III, the grandnephew of the nation’s first Catholic president.

Like their Jewish counterparts, the demographics of Catholic lawmakers are also changing. The growth of Catholic lawmakers following the Kennedy administration drew from descendants of the European Catholic diaspora. But Hispanic lawmakers are increasingly coming into the fold to succeed white Catholic lawmakers. Hispanic Catholics, who will account for 31 of 40 Hispanic House members and four out of the five senators, are finding a place in Congress as a new group of Catholic lawmakers.

In the House, California’s Pete Aguilar will be the Democratic Caucus’ vice chairman, replacing outgoing Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico as the highest-ranking Hispanic Catholic in Democratic leadership. Luján is joining the Senate’s incoming freshman class.

From a policy standpoint, Catholics have one of the biggest tents in Congress. Catholic lawmakers range from being known for their strict stances against abortion like New Jersey Republican Christopher H. Smith, to progressives who cite their faith in social justice causes such as New York Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Experts say that given the broad worldview of Catholics, those in leadership positions may not always agree on policy positions, but there is a fundamental shared language of faith.

Biden and Pelosi have both invoked their faith in public life. Biden regularly attends mass and quoted the widely known Catholic hymn “On Eagle’s Wings” during his Nov. 7 victory speech. In a December 2019 news conference, Pelosi had a heated exchange with a reporter: “I don’t hate anybody,” she said. “I was raised in a Catholic house. We don’t hate anybody, not anybody in the world.”

The steady growth among Catholics in politics also speaks to how American Catholics view their faith as integral to public service, according to John Carr, Georgetown University’s director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life. He points to a teaching from Pope Francis that “faithful citizenship is a moral obligation. … Catholic faith, Catholic culture, Catholic experience is about getting involved and trying to make things better.”

That’s a point New York Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi has taken to heart. The co-chairman of the National Prayer Breakfast readily draws a parallel to his Catholic faith and politics. “The most fundamental concept of the Catholic religion is to find the common good, to serve the common good. That’s what politics really should be about, is to really serve the common good,” he said.

Total Tyranny: We’ll All Be Targeted Under the Government’s New Precrime Program

By John W. Whitehead & Nisha Whitehead
May 19, 2021

“There is now the capacity to make tyranny total in America.”― James Bamford

It never fails.

Just as we get a glimmer of hope that maybe, just maybe, there might be a chance of crawling out of this totalitarian cesspool in which we’ve been mired, we get kicked down again.

In the same week that the U.S. Supreme Court unanimously declared that police cannot carry out warrantless home invasions in order to seize guns under the pretext of their “community caretaking” duties, the Biden Administration announced its plans for a “precrime” crime prevention agency.

Talk about taking one step forward and two steps back.

Precrime, straight out of the realm of dystopian science fiction movies such as Minority Report, aims to prevent crimes before they happen by combining widespread surveillance, behavior prediction technologies, data mining, precognitive technology, and neighborhood and family snitch programs to enable police to capture would-be criminals before they can do any damage.

This particular precrime division will fall under the Department of Homeland Security, the agency notorious for militarizing the police and SWAT teams; spying on activists, dissidents and veterans; stockpiling ammunition; distributing license plate readers; contracting to build detention camps; tracking cell-phones with Stingray devices; carrying out military drills and lockdowns in American cities; using the TSA as an advance guard; conducting virtual strip searches with full-body scanners; carrying out soft target checkpoints; directing government workers to spy on Americans; conducting widespread spying networks using fusion centers; carrying out Constitution-free border control searches; funding city-wide surveillance cameras; and utilizing drones and other spybots.

The intent, of course, is for the government to be all-seeing, all-knowing and all-powerful in its preemptive efforts to combat domestic extremism.

Where we run into trouble is when the government gets overzealous and over-ambitious and overreaches.

This is how you turn a nation of citizens into snitches and suspects.

In the blink of an eye, ordinary Americans will find themselves labeled domestic extremists for engaging in lawful behavior that triggers the government’s precrime sensors.

Of course, it’s an elaborate setup: we’ll all be targets.

In such a suspect society, the burden of proof is reversed so that guilt is assumed and innocence must be proven.

It’s the American police state’s take on the dystopian terrors foreshadowed by George Orwell, Aldous Huxley and Phillip K. Dick all rolled up into one oppressive pre-crime and pre-thought crime package.

What’s more, the technocrats who run the surveillance state don’t even have to break a sweat while monitoring what you say, what you read, what you write, where you go, how much you spend, whom you support, and with whom you communicate.

Computers now do the tedious work of trolling social media, the internet, text messages and phone calls for potentially anti-government remarks, all of which is carefully recorded, documented, and stored to be used against you someday at a time and place of the government’s choosing.

In this way, with the help of automated eyes and ears, a growing arsenal of high-tech software, hardware and techniques, government propaganda urging Americans to turn into spies and snitches, as well as social media and behavior sensing software, government agents are spinning a sticky spider-web of threat assessments, behavioral sensing warnings, flagged “words,” and “suspicious” activity reports aimed at snaring potential enemies of the state.

VACCINES & SAFETY

May 21, 2021 Updated: May 21, 2021

The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) is requiring that people in workplaces, businesses, and religious sites show proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to be allowed maskless entry to the facilities.

The state’s health authorities updated their masking guidance on May 19, following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) rollback of strict mask mandates.

“Businesses, employers and faith institutions now have the option to adjust their masking guidance to allow fully vaccinated individuals to no longer wear a mask in their establishments,” the OHA declared in a statement.

“Businesses, employers and faith institutions doing so must have a policy in place to check the vaccination status of all individuals before they enter their establishment. Businesses, employers and faith institutions who do not create such policies will maintain the same masking guidance listed below, regardless of an individual’s vaccination status.”

The statewide policy is the first of the kind in the country and is raising concerns for those who don’t want to wear masks or take the vaccine due to a number of concerns including safety, side effects, efficacy, mistrust in pharmaceutical companies, and a lack of full FDA approval. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in late March flagged vaccine passport systems’ potential problems in an opinion piece, arguing they would create two tiers of unvaccinated and vaccinated people.

A spokesperson for business group Oregon Business and Industry, Nathaniel Brown, told the New York Times that they “have serious concerns about the practicality of requiring business owners and workers to be the enforcer.”

“We are hearing from retailers and small businesses who are concerned about putting their frontline workers in a potentially untenable position when dealing with customers,” Brown said.

On May 16, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said that local governments, but not federal, will be driving “vaccine mandates” of this type.

“We’re not counting on vaccine mandates at all. It may very well be that local businesses, local jurisdictions will work toward vaccine mandates. That is going to be locally driven and not federally driven,” Walensky told NBC.

New York, which is offering free vaccination and incentives to get the shot, released in March an application that could act as a COVID-19 vaccine passport.

The application is named “Excelsior Pass,” and local authorities are thinking about requiring it for sports events, weddings, and businesses.

In this undated photo, provided by NY Governor’s Press Office on March 27, 2021, is the new “Excelsior Pass” app, a digital pass that people can download to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test. (NY Governor’s Press Office via AP/File)

“New Yorkers have proven they can follow public health guidance to beat back COVID, and the innovative Excelsior Pass is another tool in our new toolbox to fight the virus while allowing more sectors of the economy to reopen safely and keeping personal information secure,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, said in a statement.

With the move, Oregon is the first state to implement a system that requires people entering workplaces, businesses, and religious sites to show proof of vaccination.

California will require Uber, Lyft drivers to transition to electric cars

Electric vehicles must account for 90 percent of ride-hailing vehicle miles traveled in California by 2030.

California's clean-air regulator on Thursday unanimously approved new rules for ride-sharing companies Thursday.
The companies will have to begin the electrification of their fleets in 2023.
Both Uber and Lyft have already committed to converting their fleets entirely to electric vehicles by 2030.

California is requiring ride-sharing companies such as Uber and Lyft to transition from gasoline to electric vehicles (EVs) in their networks by the end of this decade.

The state's clean-air regulator on Thursday unanimously approved the Clean Miles Standard mandating that EVs account for 90 percent of ride-hailing vehicle miles traveled in California by 2030.

America is changing faster than ever! Add Changing America to your Facebook or Twitter feed to stay on top of the news.

The ride-share companies will have to begin the electrification of their fleets in 2023.

The move by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) is part of California's effort to phase out gas-powered vehicles and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and become carbon neutral by 2045. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-Calif.) last year signed an executive order requiring all new cars and passenger trucks sold in the state of nearly 40 million residents be zero-emission by 2035.

"The transportation sector is responsible for nearly half of California's greenhouse gas emissions, the vast majority of which come from light-duty vehicles," CARB Chair Liane M. Randolph said in a statement.

"This action will help provide certainty to the state's climate efforts and improve air quality in our most disadvantaged communities," Randolph said.

Both Uber and Lyft have already committed to converting their fleets entirely to EVs by 2030 and have made efforts to help drivers make the shift. The companies have said, however, California needs to spend more money to help drivers afford the zero emissions vehicles, according to Reuters.

"Lyft supports CARB's EV and [greenhouse gas] targets for TNCs [ridesharing companies] and advocated for aggressive targets throughout the process," Paul Augustine, senior manager of Sustainability at Lyft, told Changing America in a statement.

Uber applauded the rule as "one of the first emissions policies in the world based on real-world vehicle use."

"With ridehail trips accounting for just 1% of California's light-duty vehicle emissions, we hope [Clean Miles Standard] becomes a useful template for examining the other 99 percent," Adam Gromis, global head of sustainability for Uber, said in a statement.

Pope Francis: Everyone’s responsibility to care for our common home

Pope Francis sends a letter to Cardinal Peter Turkson, Prefect of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, on the occasion of a one-day virtual conference looking at the challenges and opportunities affecting Insular Peoples.

By Vatican News staff reporter

As the Church marks Laudato Si’ Week, the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Anglican Centre of Rome organized a joint ecumenical initiative on Friday, on the theme “Building fraternity, defending justice. Challenges and opportunities for Insular Peoples”.

Aims of the conference

The virtual conference aims to explore concerns about human rights and peoples' rights situation, including social and environmental challenges, in the specific context of insular states, in light of Pope Francis' encyclical letters Laudato si' and Fratelli tutti.

The event is also intended to give visibility and express solidarity with the populations concerned, as well as to build networks of solidarity with a view to joint action.

Among the topics that are under examination are the rights of indigenous peoples, the right to self-determination and the sovereignty of peoples over their natural resources.

The initiative concerns the insular peoples of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific Oceans, and involves local actors, such as government authorities and civil society organizations, following an ecumenical and interreligious approach.

The conference also includes the participation of young people from the regions concerned.
An important ecumenical initiative

In a letter to the Prefect of the Dicastery, Cardinal Peter Turkson, Pope Francis described the conference as an “important ecumenical initiative, involving mutual dialogue born of the wisdom and experience of various Christian traditions.”

He also said the event offered “an opportunity for believers, government leaders and members of the broader civil society, especially the young, to address the particular challenges faced by insular peoples.”

Challenges

Of these challenges, the Pope mentioned “violence, terrorism, poverty, hunger and the many forms of social and economic injustice and inequality that nowadays bring harm to all, but in particular to women and children.”

Of concern too, he said, is the fact that many island peoples are exposed to “extreme environmental and climate changes, some of which result from an unbridled exploitation of natural and human resources.”

Pope Francis added that, “As a result, they are experiencing not only environmental deterioration but also a human and social deterioration that increasingly puts at risk the lives of the inhabitants of these island and sea territories.”

The Pope expressed the hope that the Conference “will contribute to the development of practical international and regional policies aimed at meeting such challenges more effectively and strengthening the awareness of everyone’s responsibility to care for our common home.”

Pandemic

Turning his attention to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, the Pope noted that, during these months, people have become more conscious of their own fragility and consequently “of the need for an integral ecology that can sustain not only physical ecosystems but human ones as well.”

Pope Francis said “an attitude of solidarity and respect” was necessary in order to “resolve the environmental and social problems affecting those living in island and maritime areas.”

In conclusion, the Pope expressed the hope that the work accomplished during this meeting would be “a sign of the important role that island peoples can play in furthering the growth of a more human and inclusive world.”

Participants

Those taking part in the conference include the President of the Republic of Seychelles, Wavel Ramkalawan, as well as a message from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby.

The conference is being livestreamed on the YouTube channel of the Dicastery: https://www.youtube.com/VaticanIHD

NYC mask guidance: Health commissioner clears up mask confusion, vaccine efforts

Dan Mannarino and Veronica Rosario

NEW YORK — Many New Yorkers have been hesitant to shed their masks despite the city’s latest mask guidance allowing vaccinated people to ditch the face coverings.

New York City Health Commissioner Dave Chokshi said he plans to keep his mask on for now. He also broke down the new mask guidance and clears up any confusion people may have.

Chokshi said everything falls down to two main questions: Are you fully vaccinated or unvaccinated? And Are you indoors or outdoors?

The health commissioner said fully vaccinated people will be safe in every activity, even without a mask.

Those who are not vaccinated or not fully vaccinated must continue to follow mask-wearing protocols and guidelines.

When you’re indoors, you’re at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, Chokshi said.

If there is a mix of vaccinated and unvaccinated people, he suggested we continue wearing masks until more people get vaccinated.

When asked if the city is providing guidance for businesses, Chokshi said they are taking federal CDC guidelines and marrying it with state guidance. The health commissioner also said if businesses can verify vaccination status for anyone upon entering the establishment, they can forgo many restrictions.

However, Chokshi said there was still a significant number of New Yorkers who are not fully vaccinated, acknowledging vaccination efforts need to be doubled.

As for now, he said people should still take precautions that have worked in previous months.

“It’s vaccinations that will carry us through the home stretch,” he said.

When asked if vaccinated people should worry if they are in a place with unvaccinated people, Chokshi said they are very protected, but they should also think about those who are around us.

The Push for COVID-19 Booster Shots Begins

The United States as a collective is gradually moving on from coronavirus. Travel has resumed; more people are going out and a growing amount of folks are saying that enough is enough when it comes to mask orders.

Several major retailers, for instance, are ending their mask requirements for vaccinated folks; however, at this time, Americans are not required to show proof of immunization in order to enter the aforementioned establishments. Likewise, a growing number of governors are doing away with mask mandates in schools and other establishments.

Americans are clearly growing tired of the fear-mongering and the officials like Anthony Fauci who repeatedly move the goalposts on a deadline for all of these guidelines. However, this isn’t stopping a certain push to keep the coronavirus train going.

In a new turn of events, Fauci is now claiming that booster shots, on top of COVID-19 vaccination, will be necessary for the American public, as Breitbart News reports.

Fauci on Booster Shots for the American Public

Days ago, Fauci stated that six months is the timeframe for the efficacy of current coronavirus vaccines.

As such, Fauci maintains that yearly booster shots will be needed for the American people to stay “protected” against the infamous coronavirus. Fauci also stated that the first round of booster shots shall likely come within one year after the initial rollout of COVID-19 vaccinations.

Albert Bourla, the CEO of Pfizer, has made similar remarks. Back in April, Bourla claimed that either a third injection of coronavirus vaccines or annual booster shots would prove to be needed.

As many Americans have noted, the bait and switch just keeps on happening. It seems to many people that health officials are finding ways to keep the “pandemic” going; first, Americans were told the vaccine was the answer.

Then, talks about booster shots, variants, and more have arisen. Somehow, whenever the country passes what’s supposed to be the final threshold, a new one magically arrives.
Will Americans Accept Annual Booster Shots?

There is a certain percentage of the population that will adhere to whatever advice comes from Fauci and other glorified officials. As such, there is no doubt that some Americans will eagerly rush to get their booster shots the second they become available.

Not all Americans fall into this category. In fact, even some people who got the first dose of the coronavirus vaccine are wary about returning for a second dose due to adverse side effects. Sadly, the healthcare community continues to downplay the severity of side effects and dismiss anyone who presents critical questions.

Many Americans are fatigued with not just COVID-19, but also the mixed signals and messages coming from leaders. Health officials and Democrats, for instance, have eagerly imposed restrictive edicts on others, yet, breached their own guidelines.

What do you think about the push for coronavirus booster shots in the United States? Let us know down below in the comments section.

Pompeo: 'Overwhelming' Circumstantial Evidence Coronavirus Came from Lab

AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais
KRISTINA WONG 21 May 2021

Former Secretary of State and Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael Pompeo earlier this week strongly suggested that the coronavirus sparking a deadly global pandemic escaped from a Chinese lab in Wuhan, where scientists were conducting research on bat coronaviruses.

He said at a Center for Security Policy event Tuesday:

While I can’t prove where it came from, I can tell you the overwhelming amount of circumstantial evidence suggests that the Chinese were working on this virus in their laboratory, that the laboratory was unsafe, that the laboratory actors, whether they were doctors or technicians, were conducting a set of activities that made the virus more human-to-human spreadable and likely more lethal as well, and then somehow it likely got out of that laboratory.

He added, “I hope I’m wrong, but their reckless [behavior] in terms of covering up where patient zero came from, or where this virus actually began in Wuhan suggests that there is something that they do not want the world to know.”

Pompeo’s comments on the virus’s origins have been some of the strongest to date.

He called on China to disprove that it came from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), where scientists were conducting research on bat coronaviruses and gain-of-function experiments to make bat coronaviruses more deadly to humans.

Some of the lab’s research on bat coronaviruses was funded by United States taxpayers via a National Institute of Health grant — specifically from the NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases — to contractor EcoHealth Alliance, which partnered with the Wuhan lab on some of its research.

Pompeo said China went “full Chernobyl” to cover up the origins of the coronavirus– which was first discovered in Wuhan, China, where the WIV is located.

He continued:

It became apparent early on, so January, February of 2020, that the Communist Chinese Party had gone full Chernobyl. The fact is, they were not going to let anybody have access to any information, any data, they were going to cover this thing up, they were going to use the propaganda tools, at one point you’ll recall, they were going to try to blame the United States for having brought the virus upon the world, this was classic disinformation campaign foisted upon the world.

He said the Trump administration tried to gain access to information but was “shut down”:

We tried, the CDC tried, the HHS tried, the State Department, through our ambassadors tried to get access to this information and we were shut down. And doctors were disappeared, journalists were taken off the map, this was full lock down information mode by the Chinese Communist Party.

He recalled that when he first suggested the virus came from WIV, he was mocked. “Certainly no one in the medical community came to my support,” he said. “The Chinese had [a] stranglehold on the information, saying, ‘Oh this came from a wet market, this virus…couldn’t have been manmade or manipulated.’ Well, none of those statements are true for sure.”

Just last month, the Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines testified U.S. intelligence components have “coalesced around two alternative theories.”

“These scenarios are [that] it emerged naturally from human contact with infected animals or it was a laboratory accident,” she said.

Pompeo said he hoped that one day, the Chinese government would prove that he is wrong.

“I hope that one day, they will prove that I am wrong, and they will demonstrate to the world that patient zero wasn’t something that came from inside of a Chinese bio-facility in Wuhan, China,” he said.

House Republican intel panel members seek major probe of COVID-19 origins

By Bill Gertz - The Washington Times - Monday, May 17, 2021

House Republicans on the intelligence oversight panel are pressing President Biden to launch a major probe into the origin of the COVID-19 pandemic.

California Rep. Devin Nunes, the ranking Republican on the House Select Committee on intelligence, noted that GOP members of the panel are conducting their own inquiry into the virus pandemic that began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019.

“We write to request that you initiate a whole-of-government effort to identify the origins of the virus and to direct federal agencies and departments to examine all plausible scenarios as part of such investigation,” Mr. Nunes wrote in a letter to the president on May 16.

The committee is pursuing the matter in studying “Chinese threats to U.S. economic and national security,” Mr. Nunes said.

The Republican probe uncovered “substantial circumstantial evidence” a laboratory accident in China caused the outbreak — a theory rejected by a joint World Health Organization-Chinese government inquiry earlier this year. The WHO-China final report said no further investigation into the laboratory origin should be carried out unless new information surfaces.

Democrats, who control both the House and Senate, have shown no interest in conducting an inquiry into the virus origin, a congressional aide said.

China’s government has denied the virus leaked from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), the central focus of American intelligence agencies investigating the virus’ origin. The WHO probe said the jump from an unknown animal host to humans is still the most likely source of the global pandemic.

Recent congressional testimony by intelligence officials triggered a public debate on the laboratory leak theory that for more than a year was dismissed by many scientists and several news outlets, including The Washington Post and USA Today, as a fringe conspiracy theory.

Former New York Times science reporter Donald G. McNeil Jr. disclosed on Monday that editors at the newspaper spiked a 4,000-word report on the laboratory leak theory in the spring of 2020 because it ran counter to the narrative at the time that a lab leak was impossible.

Last week, 18 biologists including several leading experts on the virus published a letter in the journal Science calling for a new investigation and demanding that China release the information its laboratories have on the matter.

Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines told Congress last month that U.S. intelligence analysts assess that a laboratory leak and animal-to-human transmission are the two most plausible sources for the coronavirus. China so far has refused to open its records to international virus investigators regarding work conducted on viruses at the WIV.

The Trump administration in January said the Wuhan lab is suspected as a source for the pandemic because workers there became sickened with COVID-like sickness in the autumn of 2019. The lab also worked on a bat coronavirus that is 96% similar to the COVID-19 virus. WIV also worked on secret experiments for the Chinese military, the State Department said at the time.

“It is critical that this possibility be thoroughly examined, particularly in light of the Chinese government’s obstruction of multilateral bio-forensic investigations and its destruction of important evidence,” Mr. Nunes said. Citing Ms. Haines’ testimony, he added, “It is unclear, however, if the intelligence community or any other part of the U.S. government is seeking to determine the truth.”

The House Republicans noted the comments of Secretary of State Antony Blinken, who said learning the origin of the virus is important to prevent future pandemics and create a stronger health security system.

Mr. Nunes also said the U.S. government funds have supported, directly or indirectly, dangerous dual-use scientific research at the WIV.

“Our findings, though incomplete, suggest the United States supported such work despite clear evidence of the People’s Liberation Army’s involvement at the WIV,” he said.
“It is essential that your administration examine this matter and ensure that appropriate threat assessments are conducted anytime the U.S. government considers collaborating with a foreign adversary on future dual-use research,” Mr. Nunes said, adding that the president should launch an inquiry into government funding of dangerous foreign research. “My Republican colleagues and I hope you will agree that getting to the truth is of critical importance.”

A White House spokesman did not respond to an email seeking comment on whether the White House will support a major virus origin investigation.

The Last Crisis

Chapter 1—The Last Crisis

We are living in the time of the end. The fast-fulfilling signs of the times declare that the coming of Christ is near at hand. The days in which we live are solemn and important. The Spirit of God is gradually but surely being withdrawn from the earth. Plagues and judgments are already falling upon the despisers of the grace of God. The calamities by land and sea, the unsettled state of society, the alarms of war, are portentous. They forecast approaching events of the greatest magnitude.

The agencies of evil are combining their forces and consolidating. They are strengthening for the last great crisis. Great changes are soon to take place in our world, and the final movements will be rapid ones.

The condition of things in the world shows that troublous times are right upon us. The daily papers are full of indications of a terrible conflict in the near future. Bold robberies are of frequent occurrence. Strikes are common. Thefts and murders are committed on every hand. Men possessed of demons are taking the lives of men, women, and little children. Men have become infatuated with vice, and every species of evil prevails.

The enemy has succeeded in perverting justice and in filling men's hearts with the desire for selfish gain. “Justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.” Isaiah 59:14. In the great cities there are multitudes living in poverty and wretchedness, well-nigh destitute of food, shelter, and clothing; while in the same cities are those who have more than heart could wish, who live luxuriously, spending their money on richly furnished houses, on personal adornment, or worse still, upon the gratification of sensual appetites, upon liquor, tobacco, and other things that destroy the powers of the brain, unbalance the mind, and debase the soul. The cries of starving humanity are coming up before God, while by every species of oppression and extortion men are piling up colossal fortunes.

On one occasion, when in New York City, I was in the night season called upon to behold buildings rising story after story toward heaven. These buildings were warranted to be fireproof, and they were erected to glorify their owners and builders. Higher and still higher these buildings rose, and in them the most costly material was used. Those to whom these buildings belonged were not asking themselves: “How can we best glorify God?” The Lord was not in their thoughts.

I thought: “Oh, that those who are thus investing their means could see their course as God sees it! They are piling up magnificent buildings, but how foolish in the sight of the Ruler of the universe is their planning and devising. They are not studying with all the powers of heart and mind how they may glorify God. They have lost sight of this, the first duty of man.”

As these lofty buildings went up, the owners rejoiced with ambitious pride that they had money to use in gratifying self and provoking the envy of their neighbors. Much of the money that they thus invested had been obtained through exaction, through grinding down the poor. They forgot that in heaven an account of every business transaction is kept; every unjust deal, every fraudulent act, is there recorded. The time is coming when in their fraud and insolence men will reach a point that the Lord will not permit them to pass, and they will learn that there is a limit to the forbearance of Jehovah.

The scene that next passed before me was an alarm of fire. Men looked at the lofty and supposedly fire-proof buildings and said: “They are perfectly safe.” But these buildings were consumed as if made of pitch. The fire engines could do nothing to stay the destruction. The firemen were unable to operate the engines.

I am instructed that when the Lord's time comes, should no change have taken place in the hearts of proud, ambitious human beings, men will find that the hand that had been strong to save will be strong to destroy. No earthly power can stay the hand of God. No material can be used in the erection of buildings that will preserve them from destruction when God's appointed time comes to send retribution on men for their disregard of His law and for their selfish ambition.

There are not many, even among educators and statesmen, who comprehend the causes that underlie the present state of society. Those who hold the reins of government are not able to solve the problem of moral corruption, poverty, pauperism, and increasing crime. They are struggling in vain to place business operations on a more secure basis. If men would give more heed to the teaching of God's word, they would find a solution of the problems that perplex them.

The Scriptures describe the condition of the world just before Christ's second coming. Of the men who by robbery and extortion are amassing great riches, it is written: “Ye have heaped treasure together for the last days. Behold, the hire of the laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth. Ye have lived in pleasure on the earth, and been wanton; ye have nourished your hearts, as in a day of slaughter. Ye have condemned and killed the just; and he doth not resist you.” James 5:3-6.

But who reads the warnings given by the fast-fulfilling signs of the times? What impression is made upon worldlings? What change is seen in their attitude? No more than was seen in the attitude of the inhabitants of the Noachian world. Absorbed in worldly business and pleasure, the antediluvians “knew not until the Flood came, and took them all away.” Matthew 24:39. They had heaven-sent warnings, but they refused to listen. And today the world, utterly regardless of the warning voice of God, is hurrying on to eternal ruin.

The world is stirred with the spirit of war. The prophecy of the eleventh chapter of Daniel has nearly reached its complete fulfillment. Soon the scenes of trouble spoken of in the prophecies will take place.

“Behold, the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.... Because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant. Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate.... The mirth of tabrets ceaseth, the noise of them that rejoice endeth, the joy of the harp ceaseth.” Isaiah 24:1-8.

“Alas for the day! for the day of the Lord is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come.... The seed is rotten under their clods, the garners are laid desolate, the barns are broken down, for the corn is withered. How do the beasts groan! the herds of cattle are perplexed, because they have no pasture; yea, the flocks of sheep are made desolate.” “The vine is dried up, and the fig tree languisheth; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered: because joy is withered away from the sons of men.” Joel 1:15-18, 12.

“I am pained at my very heart; ... I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled.” Jeremiah 4:19, 20.

“I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down.” Verses 23-26.

“Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” Jeremiah 30:7. 9T 15.4
Not all in this world have taken sides with the enemy against God. Not all have become disloyal. There are a faithful few who are true to God; for John writes: “Here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.” Revelation 14:12. Soon the battle will be waged fiercely between those who serve God and those who serve Him not. Soon everything that can be shaken will be shaken, that those things that cannot be shaken may remain.

Satan is a diligent Bible student. He knows that his time is short, and he seeks at every point to counterwork the work of the Lord upon this earth. It is impossible to give any idea of the experience of the people of God who shall be alive upon the earth when celestial glory and a repetition of the persecutions of the past are blended. They will walk in the light proceeding from the throne of God. By means of the angels there will be constant communication between heaven and earth. And Satan, surrounded by evil angels, and claiming to be God, will work miracles of all kinds, to deceive, if possible, the very elect. God's people will not find their safety in working miracles, for Satan will counterfeit the miracles that will be wrought. God's tried and tested people will find their power in the sign spoken of in Exodus 31:12-18. They are to take their stand on the living word: “It is written.” This is the only foundation upon which they can stand securely. Those who have broken their covenant with God will in that day be without God and without hope.

The worshipers of God will be especially distinguished by their regard for the fourth commandment, since this is the sign of God's creative power and the witness to His claim upon man's reverence and homage. The wicked will be distinguished by their efforts to tear down the Creator's memorial and to exalt the institution of Rome. In the issue of the conflict all Christendom will be divided into two great classes, those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and those who worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark. Although church and state will unite their power to compel all, “both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond,” to receive the mark of the beast, yet the people of God will not receive it. Revelation 13:16. The prophet of Patmos beholds “them that had gotten the victory over the beast, and over his image, and over his mark, and over the number of his name, stand on the sea of glass, having the harps of God,” and singing the song of Moses and the Lamb. Revelation 15:2.

Fearful tests and trials await the people of God. The spirit of war is stirring the nations from one end of the earth to the other. But in the midst of the time of trouble that is coming,—a time of trouble such as has not been since there was a nation,—God's chosen people will stand unmoved. Satan and his host cannot destroy them, for angels that excel in strength will protect them.

God's word to His people is: “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, ... and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, and will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be My sons and daughters.” “Ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of Him who hath called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” 2 Corinthians 6:17, 18; 1 Peter 2:9. God's people are to be distinguished as a people who serve Him fully, wholeheartedly, taking no honor to themselves, and remembering that by a most solemn covenant they have bound themselves to serve the Lord and Him only.

“The Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily My Sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you. Ye shall keep the Sabbath therefore; for it is holy unto you: everyone that defileth it shall surely be put to death: for whosoever doeth any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the Lord: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death. Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual covenant. It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel forever: for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He rested, and was refreshed.” Exodus 31:12-17.

Do not these words point us out as God's denominated people? and do they not declare to us that so long as time shall last, we are to cherish the sacred, denominational distinction placed upon us? The children of Israel were to observe the Sabbath throughout their generations “for a perpetual covenant.” The Sabbath has lost none of its meaning. It is still the sign between God and His people, and it will be so forever.
