German rioters loot shops as 'Gen Z' demos turn ugly

Frankfurt (Germany) (AFP) – Masked rioters looted shops in the German city of Frankfurt on Saturday as massive demonstrations turned violent across the country, with police also firing water cannons at youths hurling Molotov cocktails.

Several police officers were injured in the violence after tens of thousands joined youth-led protests across the country organised by the group "GenZ regelt!" (Gen Z has got this!).

The demonstrations, inspired by similar movements in France and Italy calling for political elites to heed the concerns of the younger generation, were largely peaceful during the day.

But tensions peaked in the evening as some groups of young people refused to disperse, with violence breaking out in major cities including Berlin, Cologne and Hamburg.

It was especially bad in the financial hub of Frankfurt, where police faced protesters hurling stones, fireworks and petrol bombs, and responded with water cannon and pepper spray.

"Violent riots" were taking place, police said in a statement. "Windows have been smashed at several shops. Molotov cocktails are also being thrown at emergency personnel."

The violence, looting and burning in France over the weekend of October 24th-25th was somewhat less intense and widespread than it had been on the previous weekend, but it was still significant. A demonstration comprising an estimated 400,000 people took place on the Saturday in Paris, confined to the south-eastern edge of the city, and this was followed by violent clashes with police near Porte de Vincennes, about a 45-minute walk from the Place de la Bastille. Water cannon and tear gas were used. Around 500 rioters were estimated to have broken off from the main protest. There were more clashes, as well as bin fires and looting in Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Lille, Toulouse, Nantes, Grenoble, Rennes and several other parts of France. There were around 1,000 arrests nationwide (1,300 by some reports), with 70,000 police having been deployed to the streets, which was a substantial increase on the previous weekend’s deployment. Activists have called for further action on October 31st, and it’s clear that the sentiment behind the unrest hasn’t gone away. The weather on the 31st is forecast to be mild and dry, more similar to that of the 17th than the wetter, colder 24th, so it remains to be seen how much the tensions have been defused, and to what extent the less dedicated were put off by the weather.

There are two competing narratives in the media (mainstream and alternative) about the motivations for the unrest, and indeed the nature of the unrest. On the one hand, this is a ‘mostly peaceful’ expression of the French people’s frustration with public services. It started with teachers and students protesting against the underfunding of schools, and has widened to express a broader discontent with austerity measures and the economy in general. On the other hand, this is a violent ethno-religious-communist uprising trying to bring down the French state and overturn French society.

DHS Calls on Sanctuary Politicians to Stop Violent Rhetoric Against ICE as Assaults Increase by More Than 1,600%

Assaults against ICE officials have risen by more than 1,600% compared to the first year and a half of the Biden Administration

WASHINGTON – The United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the following statement calling on sanctuary politicians across the country to stop using hateful and violent rhetoric against the men and women of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), who are currently facing a more than 1,600% increase in assaults against them.

According to the latest data, there were 647 assaults against ICE from January 20, 2025 to September 20, 2026, compared to just 37 under the Biden Administration from January 20, 2021 to September 20, 2022. This marks an increase of 1,649%.

“The brave men and women of ICE, who are simply enforcing the laws mandated by Congress and protecting the American people, are under attack every single day. Since President Trump unleashed ICE to do their jobs, assaults against them have risen by more than 1,600% in the first year and a half of the administration,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin. “This is the result of the vicious lies being spread by sanctuary politicians and their foot soldiers who are involved in anti-ICE riots and other acts of violence. DHS is calling on these sanctuary politicians to stop attacking federal law enforcement, stop putting the needs of illegal aliens ahead of the safety of American citizens, and to start working with us to make America safe again.”

Below are some of the most egregious examples of hateful rhetoric by sanctuary politicians against ICE:

• Representative Greg Casar said “we will all be more safe when ICE gets the hell out of Austin, Texas.”
• Representative Lloyd Doggett falsely claimed that illegal aliens “are not posing any danger to our community and are contributing to our community,” while also saying that ICE “acts in a secretive way as if it’s above the law.”
• Austin Mayor Kirk Watson falsely claimed that ICE has a “rogue nature” and “foment[s] chaos.”
• Austin City Councilwoman Krista Laine falsely claimed that ICE is “terrorizing our cities and threatening the safety of our residents.”
• Minnesota Governor Tim Walz compared ICE to a “modern-day Gestapo.”
• Representative Jasmine Crockett compared ICE to “slave patrols…disappearing people based on their skin color,” and also accused ICE of “turning us into Nazi Germany.”
• Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker claimed that the United States is “essentially” becoming Nazi Germany because of ICE’s heroic efforts.
• Boston Mayor Michelle Wu compared mask-wearing ICE agents to a Neo-Nazi group.
• Representative Becca Balint compared ICE law enforcement officers to “vigilantes” engaging in “kidnapping.”
• Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hosted a webinar providing tips for illegal aliens to evade arrests at homes, workplaces, or in public.
• Representative Dan Goldman posted an online video calling on illegal aliens to make a plan for ICE encounters.
• Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass issued multilingual flyers and online resources advising illegal aliens on how to evade arrest.
• California Governor Gavin Newsom released guides and sanctuary laws advising illegal aliens how to recognize ICE, block entry, and defy arrest.
• Representative Shri Thanedar introduced the Abolish ICE Act and stated that ICE “cannot be reformed and must be abolished.”
• Representative Ilhan Omar delivered a House floor speech calling to abolish ICE.
• Representative John Larson called ICE law enforcement officers “the SS” and “the Gestapo” for arresting criminal illegal aliens.
• Representative Pramila Jayapal called ICE agents “deranged” and said it is “inspiring” to obstruct immigration enforcement.
• Representative Eric Swalwell compared ICE agents to a “KGB officer in Russia.”

As clear as that cloudless September morning, Jenna Jacobs McPartland remembers the moment everything changed. “I was cleaning the bathroom and watching the Today show in the background and nine months pregnant,” the 52-year-old recalls by phone. “I think they were showing ‘Today throws a wedding’ when the news broke in.”

A plane had hit the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York. McPartland did not know that her husband, Ariel Jacobs, was attending a conference at its Windows on the World restaurant. “I called his office to say, ‘Hey, turn on the TV. Do you guys know what’s going on?’ His assistant said, ‘Oh my God, Jenna, he’s there.’ The whole world disappeared and there was this sort of hollow collapsing feeling.”

Ariel Jacobs did not live to see his son, Gabriel, born six days after September 11, 2001. McPartland, then living in Briarcliff Manor, New York, would marry twice more, set up a grief support charity, and become a chef and restaurateur. Each 9/11 anniversary, she has a picnic at the cemetery where a few pieces of bone from her late husband are buried.

Speaking from Fairfield, Connecticut, McPartland says: “Ari was an incredibly joyful person who cherished his life. I made a conscious choice to honour him by living as joyfully as I can. It’s not always easy. I still cry pretty frequently. If there’s a movie with a building getting blown up, or if I’m reading a book and they casually mention ‘post 9-11 this’ or whatever, it catches me off guard. The grief finds a place to live in the heart, and you visit it.”

McPartland and other victims’ families have learned to live with that grief over the past 25 years. But America writ large has struggled to carry the weight of the worst terrorist attack in its history. The world’s most powerful nation responded by inflicting terror of its own, betraying its history as a safe harbour for immigrants, and pitting Americans against one another. The initial heroism, goodwill and unity of 9/11 gave way to discord at home and diminished moral authority abroad.

McPartland adds: “It makes me incredibly sad and bordering on angry that the death of my husband has been invoked to cause more violence. It is the othering of people that got him killed in the first place and, when we Americans fail to learn that lesson and choose collectively as a nation to other people, whether it’s immigrants or other nations, that is a deepening of that tragedy that is sickening and unfathomable to me.”

A pastor in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains was executed extrajudicially along with six other people after members of an armed faction arrested him at his church residence in the town of Heban.

The Rev. Adil Idris Jangoul, of the Sudanese Episcopal Church, was detained on July 23 inside the church compound in Heban’s Erie neighborhood, where he lived, the religious freedom advocacy group Christian Solidarity Worldwide reported this week.

Members of the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement-North, or SPLM/N, an armed group in the region, seized his money and arrested him without incident.

However, his body was later found on a road alongside those of six other people, all from the Otoro ethnic group. All seven had been killed in extrajudicial executions.

A related attack struck Heban the same day. Members of the Otoro ethnic group, the same community whose members had been killed alongside Jangoul, carried out the raid, killing at least 10 people and seizing more than 20 hostages, among them children, CSW said.

One hostage was the Rev. Yakoub Brahim Tia. He once served as general secretary of the Sudanese Church of Christ and belongs to the Shawaya ethnic group. Six of his relatives were also seized.

All the hostages were released unharmed on July 28, after ministers from several ethnic communities appealed for their freedom.
