Upon graduating from law school he joined the Orthodox or Christian Democrat party. My European readers will instantly recognize that this is the Roman Catholic Party. The first Christian Democrat party began in Italy under Pius XI in the 1920's. Pius XI later disbanded that party, then put his full support behind Benito Mussolini and his Fascists. The leader of the Christian Democrat party was then forced into exile, though he and Pope Pius XI remained on good speaking terms. It was in London that this leader met a fellow exile - Avro Manhattan.

Returning to Fidel Castro : Castro was obviously fully working for the Jesuits when he joined the Christian Democrat party as a young lawyer. By the time of the Cuban revolution in 1958-59, the Jesuits - in Latin America, were Marxist-Leninist in ideology, as Avro Manhattan and former Jesuit priest, Malachi Martin, well documented. 

Malachi Martin documents how, in 1963, the Jesuits became fanatic, left-wing Communists, under Pedro Arrupe, a Marxist, and a great advocate of Fidel Castro. Martin documents in his book: "The Jesuits and the Betrayal of the Roman Catholic Church" how the Jesuits proceeded to foment Communist revolutions throughout Latin America and Africa, with Castro's aid.

The late, former Jesuit Father Alberto Rivera honestly revealed that the Jesuit General Pedro Arrupe was the head of the Communist Party in Spain. Malachi Martin left the Jesuits in 1964, but while working in the Vatican, he became aware of the fact that the Jesuits, and many high-ranking cardinals, had held a Black Mass in the Vatican. (St Paul's Cathedral.) During this Black Mass, these Cardinals and other Jesuits "installed" Lucifer as head of the Church of Rome. It was Malachi Martin's belief that many of the Roman clergy at that time began practicing child molestation as part of their Satanic rites of worship.

WORLD HISTORY will inform us that FIDEL CASTRO of Cuba is an undercover Jesuit. The hidden history about him is known by few competent world historians. The loyalty of this man is to serve the will of the Jesuit General (Society Of Jesus) w/ H.Q. in the VATICAN ROMA.

1) Fidel Castro attended three Jesuit institutions. College Lasalle and Colegio Dolores. "Colegio" in Spanish is a high school or junior college.
2) He then attended a Jesuit university for "preparatory" studies--obviously, what we would call a "general studies" program--at Colegio Belen, "general studies," because, after he matriculated from there, he went to law school.

That may sound a little "cranky"--but keep in mind that Malachi Martin went on to work as an advisor for two more Popes, no longer as a Jesuit. He did textual work on the Dead Sea Scrolls--was an authority on the Semitic languages. A picture was taken of Malachi Martin sitting between Pope John Paul I - the murdered Pope, and the Pope's assistant, Diego Lorenzi in 1978, long after Martin had left the Jesuits. The picture is in David Yallop's excellent expose of the murder of John Paul I and the Vatican Bank scandal, called "In God's Name."
Back to Castro and Communist Cuba : the "Calvary Contender," an independent online Baptist periodical, reports that Henry Morris, the writer of “The Genesis Flood”, says the Pope recently visited Cuba. Castro and he shared the same podium. Pope John Paul II sounded as much a Communist as Castro.

"POPE & CASTRO SOUND ALIKE ON SOCIALISM-- Fidel Castro and Pope John Paul II met last November. 

Cuba is overwhelmingly Catholic. Catholics are allowed to join its' official atheist Communist Party. 

The Pope sounds very Castro-esque in his frequent condemnations of capitalism, consumerism and the suffering of the poor (11/19 HT). He told the Nov. U.N. World Food Summit that the imbalance between the rich and poor ("the haves and have-nots"?) cannot be tolerated. "

1) Cuba is overwhelmingly Roman Catholic.
2) Roman Catholics are allowed to join the atheist Communist Party.
3) Fidel Castro is a graduate of several Jesuit institutions, and is in good standing with the Pope.
4) He was a member of the Roman Catholic Christian Democrat party before starting his Marxist/Leninist revolution. 

Alberto Rivera, the former Jesuit priest who became a Protestant preacher, said that Castro is a fourth-degree, professed Jesuit. The circumstantial evidence strongly corroborates that statement.

Fidel Castro (Ruz) was born August 13, 1926 on his family's sugar plantation which is near Biran,
Oriente province, Cuba. His father, originally an immigrant laborer from Galicia, Spain, became owner of a 23,000-acre plantation there. 

As a boy, Castro worked in the family's sugar cane fields. When he was 6 years of age, convinced his parents to send him to school. He attended two Jesuit institutions, the Colegio Lasalle and the Colegio Dolores, in Santiago. In 1942 he entered the Colegio Belen, a Jesuit preparatory school in Havana. He was voted the school's best athlete in 1944. 

In 1945 Castro attended the University of Havana's Faculty of Law, and having earned a law degree, went into practice in 1950 in Havana with two partners. As a lawyer he devoted himself to helping the poor. Castro was a member of the Ortodoxo Party, a social-democrat party, and strongly criticized the government of Fulgencio Batista. 

Castro intended to campaign for a parliamentary seat in the election of 1952 but General Fulgencio Batista overthrew the government of President Carlos Prio Socarras in a coup d'etat and canceled the election. Castro went to court and charged the dictator with violating the constitution. The court rejected Castro's petition. With no legal recourse left, Castro organized an armed attack by 165 men on the Moncada Barracks in Oriente province on July 26, 1953. That attack and the one on Bayamo garrison failed completely. Half the attackers were killed; Castro and his brother Raul were taken prisoner and given a trial. He made his famous speech, "History Will Absolve Me". Sentenced to 15 years, he was pardoned after just two in a general amnesty on May 15, 1955. 

Castro tried unsuccessfully to oppose the military dictatorship by peaceful means. He then went into exile in Mexico, where he trained and assembled the 26th of July Movement. He gained support from Che Guevara and others before leaving aboard “The Granma” to invade Cuba in 1956. Returning to Cuba, the revolutionaries hid in the Sierra Maestra mountains, gaining support among the peasants. Eventually, Batista was forced to flee in 1959 and Castro took over. Castro became a committed Marxist-Leninist who nationalized industry, confiscated property owned by non-Cubans, collectivized agriculture, and enacted policies to benefit laborers and peasants. 

Many of the middle class fled the country, some establishing a large, active anti-Castro community in Miami, Florida. The United States Government tried various schemes to assassinate Fidel Castro. The CIA made an unsuccessful attempt to destabilize the Castro government on April 17, 1961, when a force of 1,300 Cuban exiles, supported by the CIA, made an unsuccessful attempt to invade Cuba at a southern coastal area called the Bay of Pigs. The assumption by the U.S. was that the invasion would inspire the Cuban population to rise up and overthrow Castro. It was a miscalculation; the Cuban population supported him. In October, 1962 the so-called Cuban Missile Crisis occurred when the U.S. government discovered the Soviet Union setting up long-range ballistic missiles in Cuba. These were perceived by the United States as a threat. President Kennedy instituted a naval blockade of Cuba that lasted until Khrushchev agreed to remove the missiles. Thereafter, U.S.-Cuban relations remained mutually hostile. 

As a result, Castro became closely aligned with the Soviet Union. The Soviets bought large amounts of sugar and supplied Cuba with economic and military assistance. This money fueled many of Castro's social programs, such as his war on illiteracy and free universal health care. With Castro aligning Cuba with the USSR, more and more friction developed between Cuba and the United States. 

Castro has also successfully assisted foreign revolutions in Angola and Ethiopia. He was elected the head of The Nonaligned Nations Movement and has been a strong critic of US imperialism. The Soviet Union's collapse in 1990 left Cuba in a difficult position and Castro became less of an international figure, though he remains President of Cuba. 

Let us consult World History as to what it says about JESUITISM AND COMMUNISM :
In the early 1600’s to the mid 1700’s, the Society Of Jesus (Jesuits) experimented and built a Communist “Utopia” in South America. A form of communal social system enslaving the innocent native “Guarani Indians”. These were called “REDUCTIONS”, with the most famous being the JESUIT'S REDUCTION OF PARAGUAY. Paraguay is one of several regions in South America that were colonies of Spain and Portugal. The Portugese King’s Minister - Marquis de Pombal protested to the Vatican Roma that the Jesuits had established their own domain within the territories claimed by Portugal and Spain. Portugal and Spain discovered the Jesuit's mining activities in South America using the manpower of the Guarani Indians. The Jesuit's Reduction in Paraguay was the first image of communism. 

Karl Marx, (the traditional father of communism) was trained in the tenets of Communism by Jesuits at the British Museum in the 1800's for nearly 30-Years.

Vladimir Lenin, was trained by the Jesuits in Geneva, Switzerland about the Tenets Of Communism. It was Germany’s ambassador Diego Bergen (to the Vatican Roma) during the Weimar Republic and Hitler’s NAZI Germany, who organized and provided a fully supported sealed train with Vatican Roma’s flag from Switzerland into Russia for Lenin. Upon Lenin’s arrival in Russia, he then led the Bolshevik Revolution (Russian Communist Revolution).

Leon Trotsky, was provided a safe way passage from New York to Russia to aid in the Bolshevik Revolution. He was financed by the Jesuit's newly established Federal Reserved Bank which was approved by another Jesuit temporal coadjutor President Woodrow Wilson in connivance with undercover Jesuit Colonel Edward Mandel House. The Federal Reserve Bank was the financier of the Bolshevik Revolution and was exposed in the mid 1930’s by Congressman Louis T. McFadden of Pennsylvania during his privilege speech inside the U.S. House Of Congress.

Joseph Stalin, was educated and trained by the Jesuits at the Orthodox Seminary in Tiflis, Georgia, Russia. The Jesuits taught the tenets of Communism to Stalin and Cardinal Agagianian. 

Daniel Ortega, was the head of the Sandinista Rebels in Nicaragua and responsible for the assassination of President Anastacio Somoza. It was the Jesuit Father Fernando Cardenal who formulated the LIBERATION THEOLOGY and injected it into the Sandinista Rebels. Both Daniel Ortega and Jesuit Father Fernando Cardenal were helped by undercover Jesuit - Fidel Castro. Liberation Theology scattered throughout South American regions and reached Sri Lanka, India and the Philippines. Liberation Theology is Catholicism with a mixture of Marxism which was embraced by Fathers Conrado Balweg and Luis Jalandoni. 

During World War II (Russian Front), Hitler’s right hand man, Martin Bormann, was an agent of communist Russia and cooperated with Joseph Stalin. 

Martin Bormann knew that Joseph Stalin was an undercover Jesuit (Father Joseph Stalin, S.J.). That is why Martin Bormann was helped by the Jesuit’s “Vatican Ratlines” to escape into South America wearing a Jesuit priest's robe. He was helped by Bishop Alois Hudal and Martin Bormann’s son - the godson of Adolph Hitler, named Adolph Martin Bormann who is a Jesuit priest and assigned in Africa. 

Mao Tse Tung, was trained by the Jesuits about the Tenets Of Communism. In China, Mao Tse Tung was helped and put into power by a known Jesuit anthropologist, Jesuit Father Tielhard de Chardin.
Up to this present time, only Jesuit owned Colleges and Universities are teaching LIBERATION THEOLOGY UNDER CURRICULUM 141 IMMERSION PROGRAM. This is a clear manifestation that the Jesuits are teaching communism or Marxist Ideology.

The former teacher of Fidel Castro was Jesuit Father Armando Llorente. Father Armando Llorente is now 87 years old and presently living at a Jesuit residence in Miami, Florida. Nicaraguan exiles now living in Florida, U.S.A. are blaming Jesuit Father Fernando Cardenal for being the instigator of the civil war in Nicaragua carried-out by the Sandinista Rebels.

Anyone who is about to study World History or already studying, or who already has a competent knowledge about world history will not dispute these issues and will not agree that these issues are conspiracy theory. There are approximately 6,000 Books written about the Jesuits and many of these books were banned, and no way available in famous bookstores and are now missing in public libraries around the world. The only remaining public library that is keeping these rare, and banned books about the Jesuits is the British Museum in London. Soon, the Jesuits will have these banned and rare books removed from the British Museum.

World History is one of the major subjects that the Society Of Jesus (Jesuits) doesn’t want discussed in public, universities, colleges and in the television forum. 

Lastly, you’ll notice that the Jesuits are the only religious fathers of the Roman Catholic Church who have the privilege to wear civilian clothes and not a priest’s robes. Yet, they are The Catholic Church’s religious fathers. This is one of the reasons, Jesuits can infiltrate governments, military and other private sectors without being noticed as a Jesuit Father.

Three CIA military contractors who were in the fight for their lives when our consulate in Benghazi was attacked on Sept. 11, 2012, gave a riveting first-hand account in a bombshell interview with Fox News anchor Bret Baier of what really happened that night.

U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans — including Winchester native Glen Doherty — lost their lives in the brutal attack by Islamist terrorists who launched RPGs, mortars and heavy fire into both the consulate and nearby annex — for 13 hours — while the White House and State Department ignored their cries for help.

When our consulate was attacked, these three CIA first responders wanted to immediately rush over to the compound to rescue Stevens and other personnel but say they were repeatedly told to wait and “stand down” for nearly 30 minutes by their CIA base chief, who was with them that deadly night. Their team leader was a CIA official who got direct orders from Washington to wait multiple times.

This long delay cost Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith their lives.

Baier’s report is based on a book coming out Tuesday, “13 Hours: The Inside Account of What Really Happened in Benghazi,” written by Boston University journalism professor Mitchell Zuckoff along with the CIA contractors.

BAIER: If I gave you that 30 minutes back, would Ambassador Stevens and Sean Smith be alive today?

KRIS PARONTO (CIA contractor): Yes, they would still be alive.

BAIER: You in on that?

JOHN TIEGEN (CIA contractor): I strongly believe if we would have left immediately, they would still be alive today.

Not only did the delay cost two Americans their lives, but these three CIA security contractors and two others, Tyrone Woods and Doherty, were still fighting for their own lives as the attack continued. They requested air support and military back-up from the State Department — but Hillary Clinton didn’t answer that 3 a.m. phone call. No help came. And good American men lost their lives because of it.

The Obama Administration — of course — denies they told anybody at the CIA annex to “stand down.” It’s no surprise they’ve been playing word games on what “language” they used to order the CIA security team to wait. Former President Bill Clinton — when caught in a sex scandal which led to his impeachment — spliced words during the investigation saying, “It depends what the meaning of ‘is’ is.” With an ongoing congressional Benghazi investigation and upcoming midterm elections, the White House and their spokesmen are doing the same.

And America’s not buying it. They know a cover-up when they see one.

Prior to the Sept. 11 attack, Obama was selling the phony narrative that terrorism was “on the run.” So instead of admitting he was wrong when Islamist terrorists attacked our consulate, his administration made up the phony story that protesters upset by a video attacked our consulate and murdered these brave Americans. And then they went into cover-up mode. They put politics first and violated the “leave no man behind” military code.

And with a complicit mainstream media they got away with it, and Obama got re-elected. Politics and personal career ambitions should never trump human life. But in the Obama/Clinton regime, it does.

We are all Jesuits

There are plenty of reasons to keep a close eye on Herman van Rompuy, the President of the European Council. Early September, Van Rompuy spoke to the 'Interreligious Dialogue' in Florence. The world press did not notice, but fortunately there was still the 'Katholiek Nieuwsblad' from Den Bosch, Rome's last resort in the Netherlands. The newspaper proudly quoted Van Rompuy as announcing: 'We are all Jesuits'. He was referring to those prominent European leaders with whom he is developing the architecture for the future Europe. 'It creates unbreakable ties. So there is a 'Jesuits International''.

Who are those people that Van Rompuy, himself schooled by the Jesuits at Sint-Jan Berchman College in Brussels, was talking about? First of all, there is José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. Secondly, there is Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime minister of Luxembourg and Chairman of the Euro group. Van Rompuy also mentions the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi, who was schooled in the Roman Jesuit College Instituto Massimiliano Massimo. The Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti and his Spanish collegue Mariano Rajoy have also been shaped by Jesuit colleges, Van Rompuy cheerfully added. Fortunately there is Angela Merkel, the stubborn daughter of a vicar from the former DDR, to act as a counterweight.

Listening to Van Rompuy, you will instantly notice the similarities of the Jesuits with Europe. Jesuits formed the vanguard of the Catholic Church, like the European elite is the vanguard of the European integration. Both portray themselves as 'the elite', elevated above the ordinary people. Their methods are very similar. A sophisticated lie or purposeful deception is allowed when framed in the interest of the greater goal. A barely contained cynicism typifies the attitude toward the normal citizen, the ignorant fool, who within a democracy needs to be protected from himself. The Catholic and European elites work through inner circles. The rest is prose. Van Rompuy, Barroso, Monti and Rajoy are frequent visitors at papal audiences.

It is not surprising that this mentality leaves traces in the European structures and working methods. The ECB has a Governing Council of twenty three members, among which are the six members of the Executive Board. The ECB setup is hardly different from the Vatican. The Governing Council ranks no women, is not accountable to a Parliament and the minutes of its meetings are classified. The American Federal Reserve Bank and the Bank of Japan have to publish the minutes from their board meetings. The ECB plays a central role in the Euro zone, moving around billions of Euros, but no one knows how the bank in Frankfurt makes decisions. At least the Pope had a butler exposing the secrets.

Admittedly, Euro Jesuits are intellectually superior. They are way smarter than Guy Verhofstadt, leader of the Liberal fraction in the European Parliament and his Green counterpart Daniel Cohn-Bendit. In their book ‘For Europe!’ they scream their goals at the top of their lungs: a federal Europe with one government, one European tax and one army. The only thing that is missing is one secret service and one leader, so Europe is back to where it started. Put this to a referendum and the ‘United States of Europe’ is limited to Italy and Belgium.

Even sillier is the ‘final report’ of a handful of Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the future of Europe. The report is signed by eleven out of the twenty seven Member States; a minority, among them the Netherlands. The usual suspect, the UK, did not sign and neither did Sweden or Finland. Of the new Member States, only Poland signed. The conclusion of the group: ‘The Euro is the most powerful symbol of European integration’. The many rescue operations and emergency funds are conveniently ignored. Some amongst the eleven Ministers (it is not clear which ones) argue in favour of a European army. Such an army will undoubtedly be a paper tiger, because the armies of the Euro countries are shrinking rapidly as a result of the crisis. Surprisingly, Greece spends the most on its military per capita! Yet Greece did not sign. In short, these eleven ministers, like a disoriented soccer team, excel at scoring in their own net.

That is something that would never happen to the Euro Jesuits. Their report ‘Toward a genuine Economic and Monetary Union’ only consists of ‘building blocks’ and ‘suggestions’.  The report suggests implementing a European deposit guarantee scheme. Nothing dramatic of course, it is just a suggestion. In a painless exercise of words citizens are moulded into a thinking process that goes beyond them. As soon as they realise what building those building blocks are meant to create, they are already trapped in it. What used to be suggestions will be fait accompli and those who object are labelled as unreasonable and fractious, as populists.

Meanwhile, the never elected Prime Minister Monti has announced that he will start a European campaign against ‘populism’. Van Rompuy, also never elected, immediately gave him his support. Monti had earlier stated that national parliaments should not get in the way of European leaders, thereby referring to the German Bundestag. They have to be ‘educated’. Jesuits lead the people, who are in turn supposed to follow. What is populism to them? It is the ‘ignorent’ who refuses to follow: the angry Greeks, the protesting Spaniards, the concerned Germans and the Euro-critical Dutch. A Europe with such an elitist mentality needs a Reformation, but that is something Jesuits International detests. What an annoying populist he was, that Martin Luther!

Every American could – literally – be labeled a suspected terrorist under current governmental criteria.

Specifically, the following actions may get a U.S. citizen labeled as a suspected terrorist today:
Speaking out against government policies
Protesting anything
Questioning war (even though war reduces our national security; and see this)
Criticizing the government’s targeting of innocent civilians with drones (although killing innocent civilians with drones is one of the main things which increases terrorism. And see this)
Asking questions about pollution (even at a public Congressional hearing?)
Paying cash at an Internet cafe
Asking questions about Wall Street shenanigans
Holding gold
Creating alternative currencies
Stocking up on more than 7 days of food (even though all Mormons are taught to stockpile food, and most Hawaiians store up on extra food)

Investigating factory farming
Infringing a copyright
Taking pictures

Holding the following beliefs may also be considered grounds for suspected terrorism:
Valuing online privacy
Supporting Ron Paul or being a libertarian
Liking the Founding Fathers
Being a Christian (?)
Being anti-tax, anti-regulation or for the gold standard

I initially thought that Paul Joseph Watson was overreacting when he claimed that a Homeland Security video paints the following activities as signs of potential terrorism:
Opposing surveillance
Talking to police officers
Wearing a hoodie
Driving a van
Writing on a piece of paper

But Watson makes a brilliant point about Homeland Security’s “See Something Say Something”campaign, and how accusations of terrorism actually spread:

As Robert Gellately of Florida State University has highlighted, Germans under Hitler denounced their neighbors and friends not because they genuinely believed them to be a security threat, but because they expected to selfishly benefit from doing so, both financially, socially and psychologically via a pavlovian need to be rewarded by their masters for their obedience.

At the height of its influence around one in seven of the East German population was an informant for the Stasi. As in Nazi Germany, the creation of an informant system was wholly centered around identifying political dissidents and those with grievances against the state, and had little or nothing to do with genuine security concerns. [Indeed, the American government has been using anti-terror laws to crush dissent and to help the too big to fail businesses compete against smaller businesses(and see this. And the Department of Homeland Security has been distracted by activities which have very little to do with terrorism.)]

This is the kind of society the Department of Homeland Security is, whether deliberately or inadvertently, recreating in 21st century America.

Gellately’s website notes:

“I started to read these files about all the victims in just one region of Germany that the Gestapo had processed,” Gellately says. “It would have taken a large force of secret police to collect information on so many people. I needed to know just how many secret police there really were. So I asked an elderly gentleman who would’ve lived through those times, and he replied, ‘They were everywhere!’”

That was the prevailing myth.

“But I had evidence right there in my hands that supported a different story,” Gellately explains. “There were relatively few secret police, and most were just processing the information coming in. I had found a shocking fact. It wasn’t the secret police who were doing this wide-scale surveillance and hiding on every street corner. It was the ordinary German people who were informing on their neighbors.”

As he was uncovering who was acting as the Gestapo’s unsolicited agents, he also began to discern what motivated neighbor to inform on neighbor. The surviving myth told the story of informers who were motivated either by a commitment to the Third Reich or by a fear of authority.

But the motives Gellately found were banal—greed, jealousy, and petty differences.

He found cases of partners in business turning in associates to gain full ownership; jealous boyfriends informing on rival suitors; neighbors betraying entire families who chronically left shared bathrooms unclean or who occupied desirable apartments.

And then there were those who informed because for the first time in their lives someone in authority would listen to them and value what they said.

Backing Hitler also challenges conventional views on the nature of modern dictatorships. Perhaps as a way for us to believe that “it couldn’t happen here,” we have viewed the Holocaust as an atrocity that was the work of a handful of evil men. Gellately, however, presents persuasive evidence that Hitler and the Third Reich were able to build a consensus for their policies.

“They began with small violations of the rights of Jews and other minorities, and then ratcheted up their racism and persecution only when they saw implied consent from the German people.” Gellately says. “Many Germans disapproved of Hitler’s fascism and brutality, at first. But after the long economic depression following the First World War, the German people allowed the thriving economy and return to law and order under Hitler to mute their concerns. People had jobs and the streets were safe. Hitler was managing a fine balance of consent and coercion.”

The same dynamic played out in Iraq. People turned their neighbors in to the American military pretending they were Al Qaeda, based on petty jealousies or just wanting to get a reward. Specifically, neutral observers say that most of the Iraqis tortured in Iraq were innocent farmers, villagers, or those against whom neighbors held a grudge. Iraqis received a cash reward from the U.S. military for turning people in as “suspected terrorists”. See this movie.

The number two man at the State Department under Colin Powell (Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson), the commander of the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq and official U.S. military records all confirm thatvirtually all of the people turned in and subsequently tortured were innocent.

THAT IS A FASCINATING QUESTION

Recently, while traveling on business, I had occasion to meet with a group of about 50 Adventists. Those gathered were well educated, with many of them coming from families of long experience in the church. As our discussion progressed, someone raised the topic of how the church publicly presents Bible prophecy.

Some in the group knew that I had recently finished preaching a three-part sermon series (back in my home church) on portions of the book of Revelation. And while few had heard the series themselves, some who had were clearly agitated about it. “I noticed that you mentioned Catholicism by name in one of your sermons,” one man said. “That really made me uncomfortable!” His discomfort, he explained, came in large part from the extreme contrast between how he was raised to view Catholicism and his subsequent experience with Catholics as an adult. With obvious passion and genuine concern, he detailed how he had been taught as a child that Catholics hated Protestants like him; that Catholic churches had (and I’m not making this up) jail cells in their basements in which to hold captured Protestants; and yes, that the Catholic Church was “the beast” of Bible prophecy.

But later in life it came as a great surprise to this man (and undoubtedly to many other Adventists before and since) to discover that many Catholics are genuinely nice people. In fact, he currently employed a number of them in his privately owned business precisely because he found them to be such kind people. Catholics, he said, are courteous, hardworking, and honest—in short, completely different from the stereotype he’d been taught as a child. “So why,” he said, concluding his argument, “would we squander that kind of goodwill with Catholics by preaching against them and calling them ‘the beast’?”



My guess is that this man’s experience is not unique, or even rare. There are probably many others who have similarly squeamish feelings regarding the traditional Adventist understanding of prophecy in general, and Roman Catholicism in particular. And for this sincere group there are dozens of topics they’d rather have their church declare publicly than Bible prophecy! Wisdom—and perhaps just sheer good taste—would seem to dictate that we stick with seemingly less-controversial topics (Christ’s death and resurrection, heaven, etc.), while steering clear of things that might cause unnecessary divisions among those we live, work, and play with.

I can certainly relate to such sentiment. I too have been uncomfortable with the abrasive and ham-fisted prophecy presentations I’ve sometimes sat through, ones in which the presenter seemed to care more about causing shock and awe than they did about reaching people for Christ. And consequently, I firmly believe that in some contexts, prophecy is not the all-purpose “entering wedge” we’ve sometimes made it out to be, and instead proves simply to offend people, not save them.

But all that said, is it possible that seeing this issue as a question only of community relations might be oversimplifying what is really a significantly more complex problem?

What Adventism has to say to the world (or, as the case may be, what it doesn’t have to say to it) is more than a question of whether people like us—as important as that is. It also involves the deeper question of identity: Who are we as a church? What is our message and our mission? What is it that God has asked us to be and to do and to say to those in our sphere of influence? Questions like these must always precede (though not preempt) questions of social propriety— and therein lies a fascinating discussion.

Still a Place for Prophecy?

Let me be quick to state what I hope is obvious: It is hardly the primary mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church to identify the Catholic Church as the antichrist/beast power of Daniel and Revelation (our billboard-posting friends past and present notwithstanding). Our primary mission is, instead, to proclaim the same good news about Jesus that the apostles did, although now in the additional context of the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14. Our goal in doing so is to make fully devoted followers of Christ (think Matthew 28:18-20) who help others Biblically withstand the final deception (that’s where the three angels of Revelation 14 come in, showing God’s truth and exposing Satan’s counterfeit gospel). And in accomplishing that mission, it may indeed be necessary at times to share some startling and uncomfortable truths with either friends or strangers who have a desire to know more about God’s will for their lives.

“But won’t that just needlessly chase them off?” some will ask. “Can’t we just skip those uncomfortable things until later, or perhaps completely?” To answer these questions, let’s do a little case study on the idea of Catholicism having a major role at the end of time being part of (not all, but part of) the Adventist witness. Yes, there are other “uncomfortable” things that we have taught—the perpetuity of the Ten Commandments, what happens after you die, the health message, etc. But the topic of Catholicism at the end of time might just provide us with a good vantage point from which to view the rest of our witness.

So here goes: Why do it? Why is it necessary to publicly proclaim something so potentially uncomfortable as Catholicism and its role in Bible prophecy? I believe there are at least three reasons:

1 It is truth.

In my experience it is exceedingly rare for Adventists opposed to discussing Catholicism’s end-time role to oppose it on the grounds that it’s untrue. In other words, it’s not that they necessarily believe Catholicism has no role to play at the end of time, but rather that they see it as uncomfortable and awkward to talk about.

But to state the obvious, this does not mean that Catholicism does not play a significant role at the end of time. Traditionally, Adventists have given a prominent role to the Papacy in discussions of Christian history (that is easily justifiable by generally accepted historical fact), as well as a prominent role at the end of time (this is based on proven principles of Biblical interpretation). In other words, discomfort does not equal discredit. Simply because something makes us uncomfortable does not make it untrue—which brings up an important point.

In John 8:32 Jesus makes a profound statement regarding truth. He said, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” The primary definition of the “truth” in this context is the person of Jesus. But the statement has implications beyond His personhood, at least as personhood is commonly defined. Surely what Jesus is really saying here is that if anything is true, it is true because He is who He is. Christ is thus the foundation of all truth: the truth that water quenches thirst; that E = mc2; that murder is wrong; that Jesus’ death can pay the price for our sins; etc. All these things are true in a very real sense because Jesus is who He is: Creator, sustainer, sovereign king of all! And furthermore, because all truth is rooted in Christ, all truth seen through the person of Christ is liberating—even (and at times, especially) uncomfortable truth. Thus Christ’s statement in John 8 means that knowing and appropriately sharing the truth about Catholicism’s end-time role (or, for that matter, any truth), when done in the love of Christ, is, on some level, a liberating and freeing experience. This brings us to the next point.

2 Knowing the truth about Catholicism’s end-time role

—as well as other prophetic truths—can bring tremendous freedom. A few years ago I was in Rome, Italy. As part of my travels I visited the scala santa, or holy stairs. I will never forget the sight that greeted our tour group that day.

The stairs are reportedly the same ones that Christ walked up as He went to His trial before Pilate, painstakingly transported from Jerusalem hundreds of years ago to their current site in Rome. As we entered the building containing the stairs, about 15 people were silently ascending them on their knees, saying the Our Father (Lord’s Prayer) and confessing their sins on each stair before moving to the next. A plaque on the wall with text in several languages explained these pilgrims’ behavior. It read in part as follows:


“The following indulgences may be received [that is, for ascending the stairs], in accord with the usual conditions: PLENARY INDULGENCE—on all Fridays of Lent, and once more each year on an occasion of one’s choice. PARTIAL INDULGENCE—on all other days of the year, as long as one is sincerely repentant of one’s sins.”

My Protestant bones couldn’t believe it! What year is this, anyway? I thought. How can such a pitiful scene persist in our day? Isn’t this the very thing that Martin Luther and dozens of other Protestant Reformers fought so hard to overthrow 500 years ago, the same righteousness-by-works slavery they risked (and at times, lost) their lives to remove? Moreover, what kind of monstrous picture of “God” is it that requires sinners to evaluate their salvation by the depth of the calluses on their knees? And how outrageous is it that an organization that commands the devotion of more than 1 billion people reduces the gift of God’s Son to a veritable trinket that must be bought by the actions of one’s body (and on occasion, one’s wallet), rather than “mere” repentance and faith in God?1

Upon further reflection, I had to confess there was little reason for my surprise. You see, as the businessman I mentioned earlier alluded to, the world is filled with compassionate and gracious Catholics (some of whom I was undoubtedly watching that day on those stairs). But the core teachings of the church they reside in are, sadly, a different matter. For while Catholicism’s public face has softened since the Second Vatican Council of 1962-1965, it has never changed its fundamental teachings on salvation—not for Luther, nor for anyone else before or since. The Catholic Catechism and the councils of the church throughout history are instead unanimous in teaching that salvation comes only through the Catholic Church; that believers can receive that salvation only by participating in the sacraments of the church (the Eucharist,2 in particular); and that those believers who refuse this “grace” via these sacraments will suffer eternal damnation—no exceptions.3

Is it any wonder that Jesus’ words “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32) have utterly transformed the lives of thousands of Catholics who are now hearty and happy Seventh-day Adventists?

Let it be crystal clear: It is true that some people—be they nonbelievers, Protestants, or, of course, Catholics—are offended by what the Bible teaches about the end-time papal role.4 But that offense pales in comparison to the extreme relief that comes to so many Catholics when they realize for the first time that Jesus died for them personally; that they can go directly to Him without a human intermediary; that they don’t have to earn the love of the Father! And seeing the joy on the face of a prisoner set free ought to give pause to the critic who declares Bible prophecy to be too offensive and embarrassing for public consumption.

3 Jesus is coming.

September 2011 marked the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks. Few Americans will ever forget that day—where they were when they first heard the news, the images of the planes striking the towers, the mounting sense of horror and uncertainty. The unthinkable had become reality, and whatever sense of immunity we may have felt to terrorism unraveled into a billion pieces as the World Trade Center cascaded into the streets of lower Manhattan.

But as tragic as the events of that day were, my sense is that something that may prove even more deadly has come about in the 10 years since: Many Adventists have lost their sense of the nearness of Christ’s coming—and with it, their appetite for Bible prophecy.

That sounds counterintuitive, doesn’t it—losing confidence in prophecy even as end-time-like events are happening? But nonetheless, as I travel in North America in ministry-related settings, it seems that an increasing swath of Adventism since September 11 is losing its prophetic focus rather than sharpening it. More and more Adventists see prophecy as antagonistic rather than liberating. And yes, some have suppressed public prophecy presentations in part on the grounds that people have enough fear in their post-September 11 lives already. Why burden them with more by studying scary prophetic beasts?

There are many answers that could be given to that question. But for our purposes here, one final response stands out: Being prepared for the end of time and Jesus’ return is far better than not being prepared.

Jesus is still coming back whether we are calm or September 11-nervous! And the only way to be ready for Jesus to come—and to thus delete that nervousness—is to know Jesus, personally and daily. He is our salvation, not Bible prophecy or anything else. And Jesus went through a great deal of effort to provide reams of prophetic insight (e.g., the books of Daniel and Revelation, the writings of Ellen White, etc.) precisely so that people might make that decision to choose Him as their Lord and Savior. In other words, prophecy matters! It matters greatly to God, and it therefore ought to be of everlasting importance to all Christians everywhere! Jesus inspired prophecy to be written, knowing that that prophetic message would provide a quantum leap in helping people be ready for His return.

Furthermore, in the heart of that message—that is, the three angels’ messages of Revelation 14, the very message that God has tasked Adventism with sharing with the world—is a warning against counterfeits. So strong is the warning that nothing else in Scripture exceeds its intensity. And in spite of what conservative talk radio may have us believe, the warning is not against making bad financial investments or high unemployment rates or having a weak national defense. It is, instead, a warning against worshipping an end-time beast and receiving his mark—a discussion that is extremely difficult to have without mention of Catholicism and its role at the end of time.

When preparing people for the end of time, Adventists must present Jesus clearly. That is the heart of our mission. And many, many people won’t see Jesus clearly or be ready for His soon return unless the truth about counterfeit forms of salvation and other real issues of the end-time are presented in detail—including, when necessary, details about Catholicism.

A Gift Like No Other

I can readily sympathize with that Adventist businessman and others who get nervous about our prophetic message. At times I still get nervous when I present it, for it remains a difficult topic to convey appropriately. I know that some people, no matter how much I love them and treat them with respect, may be offended by that message. But I keep doing it—carefully, tactfully, yes, but still doing it—because Christ has asked us to, and it has proved so liberating to so many people.

We do live in a post-September 11 world that is more tenuous than ever. But that also means that Jesus is more relevant than ever. “To beast or not to beast?” should thus no longer be a question we approach with irritation or distrust. Instead, let us be tactful, let us be kind, let us be loving—and let us faithfully present Christ with all the prophetic clarity we can muster.

1 Some may point out that the phrase “as long as one is truly repentant of one’s sins” shows that the Catholic Church believes in biblical grace. This would be true but for one stubborn fact: God’s grace in the Catholic understanding is given only after you’ve walked the stairs (or performed some other meritorious action)—not before. This is consistent with the Catholic definition of grace: the unmerited favor of God mediated to the believer through the sacraments of the church. No sacraments, therefore, equals no saving grace—regardless of the sincerity of one’s repentance.

2 The Eucharist is vaguely similar to what Adventists call Communion, or the Lord’s Supper.

3 Some commentators insist that Vatican II fundamentally changed the “exclusivist” view of salvation that Catholicism had held for centuries before. 4 However, though it is by no means official dogma of the church, a sizable and growing segment of Catholicism now believes that the end-time antichrist will arise from within the Catholic Church (they say it will be a pope, while Adventism would say it is not a person, but a system of religious belief coupled with political power). Without going into their rationale for this conclusion, suffice it to say that for many Catholics today, Adventist prophetic interpretation is a very welcome elucidating force.

As predicted, the collapse of the financial mafia is accelerating. U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner was detained for questioning by New York police on February 24th and was released after giving evidence about many high level financial criminals, according to New York police sources. "In most cases we have to slap people to get them to talk but in his case we had to slap him to shut him up," one of the interrogators joked. Geithner has been released but is accompanied at all times by an armed deputy to make sure he does not leave the country.

Former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy is also proving to be very talkative, sources in Europe say. Berlusconi has been released. Meanwhile, meetings between White Dragon Society representatives and South Korean government officials last week in Seoul were very productive.

In general what has happened is that dozens of high level informants have come forth in the past weeks and detailed testimony by them is being gathered. Apart from Geithner and Berlusconi, the talking big fish include members of the Rothschild family who have come forth with startling information.

The cabalists for their part are still fighting to preserve their expired power and control. The latest scam they are working on involves the $6 trillion worth of 1934 gold back securities that were seized in Switzerland recently.

Mayors hail Hillary Clinton for 2016

Even before President Barack Obama starts his second term, some of the nation’s Democratic mayors have come close to settling on his successor: Hillary Clinton.

Mayors interviewed by POLITICO at the U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting in Washington, D.C., were effusive about the secretary of state, although some waved off questions about 2016. While few were ready to commit to her candidacy before she has even left Foggy Bottom, their praise leaves little doubt about Clinton’s level of support from local officials.

And of course, Clinton needs to decide to run before she can get an endorsement.

“She says she’s too tired to run,” said Frank Ortis, the Democratic mayor of Pembroke Pines, Fla. “I’ve known the first lady for a long time, the secretary. And if that’s her choice, God love her, she’s done so much. She’s traveled more than anyone. But I do love her as a leader. If she were to run, I would support her. I just think she’s so tired.”

Clinton also earned praise from the mayor of the second-largest city in an early primary state.

“She would be a very fine candidate,” said Joe Riley Jr. of Charleston, S.C., the nation’s longest-serving mayor, having been in office since 1975. “Always you wait to see who the candidates are, but I’m a great admirer of Secretary Clinton. She’s been a fabulous secretary of state. Amazing.”

Riley endorsed President Barack Obama in the 2008 primary.

The praise of Clinton from the mayoral ranks matches her early support from rank-and-file Democrats. A December ABC/Washington Post poll found 57 percent of Americans want her to run in 2016. An overwhelming 61 percent of Democrats said Clinton was their top choice in a Public Policy Polling survey the same month.

Much of the goodwill for Clinton can be traced to that unsuccessful 2008 run — which gave her the opportunity to meet mayors from across the nation — and how she handled its aftermath.

“She has served with great distinction,” Gary, Ind., Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson said. “She took a hit [four years ago] when she did not get the nomination, but did she it with such grace and dignity, that it would be hard for her not to be picked. I would be glad to support her.”

Mayor Raul Salinas of Laredo, Texas, endorsed Clinton in 2008, during a campaign in which she visited the border city of 200,000.

“I think with her background, her vast experience, I mean, she is an all-around, well-seasoned, somebody that would do an outstanding, a remarkable, I don’t have enough adjectives to say, she would be a brilliant president,” Salinas said. “I think she’s wonderful, she’s wonderful. Look what she’s done in her capacity, the confidence the president has in her; she has done an amazing job.”

He added later: “When you open up the dictionary and see ‘statesman,’ you see Hillary Rodham Clinton on that stage.”

But Salinas called POLITICO later to praise another potential 2016 contender who had just addressed the mayors: Vice President Joe Biden.

“I think it’s kind of premature, we have to make sure, the president, he just started his second term, it’s a long time down the road,” he said. “We have a good core of people that would be able to lead this country. [I also] can’t take anything away from Vice President Joe Biden. Wow, the experience he has, a good working relationship with local people.”

Mass Shootings in 2012: Crimesider reports on this year's public shootings

Just three days before the massacre, 22-year-old Jacob Tyler Roberts opened fire on holiday shoppers at the Clackamas Town Center in Oregon, killing two people and then himself.


These recent shootings were just the latest involving multiple victims in public places this year. From 12 people killed in a movie theater in Colorado in July, to three high school students killed in Ohio in February, such public shooting incidents have been far from rare.

Crimesider compiled details on 13 of the 2012 shootings, attempting to determine what kind of weapons were used in each incident, and whether the suspects' firearms were obtained legally.


However, our list is not comprehensive. In July, for example, five people were shot at a basketball tournament in New York City; in March, two people were killed and 12 injured in gunfire outside a North Miami funeral home; and in June, three people died and two others were wounded in a shooting outside a Houston nightclub. Not to mention dozens of victims killed on the streets ofChicago and other cities.


We steered away from incidents believed to involve gang violence, identifying situations where armed men (and they are all men) opened fire in a public place, killing and/or maiming those gathered there

1. February 22, 2012


Su Jung Health Sauna, Norcross, Ga.

Just days before the Su Jung Health Sauna was set to open, 59-year-old Jeong Soo Paek walked into the spa and shot and killed four people, then turned the gun on himself. According to theAtlanta Journal-Constitution, the impetus for the shooting may have been financial. The paper reported that the victims were Paek's sisters and their husbands, from whom Paek wanted money.

Weapon used: .45 caliber pistol

Gun bought legally?: Yes.

According to Captain Brian Harr of the Norcross Police Department, Paek owned the gun legally, but Harr did not know where he had obtained it.

State gun laws: Georgia does not require a background check for the transfer of a firearm between private parties (such as a transaction at a gun show), according to the Law Center for the Prevention of Gun Violence (LCPGV) Ammunition sales are not regulated, nor is the number of firearms purchased at one time limited. According to a report by Mayors Against Illegal Guns, in 2006-2009, Georgia exported more guns used in crimes than any other state.


2. February 27, 2012


Chardon High School, Chardon, Ohio

On the morning of Feb. 27, 17-year-old T.J. Lane allegedly walked into the cafeteria of Chardon High School, pulled out a .22 caliber handgun and began shooting at students gathered there before class. Three people were killed and three others wounded. Lane was captured soon after about a mile from the school.

Lane has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him. A judge ruled he will be tried as an adult.

Weapon used: .22 caliber pistol

Gun bought legally?: Unclear. The gun did not belong to Lane and Chardon Police Chief Tim McKenna told Crimesider that reports that Lane got the gun from his grandfather's barn are incorrect. However, due to a gag order in the case, he declined to say whose gun it was and whether it was purchased legally.


State gun laws: Ohio requires that a gun owner report if his firearm has been lost or stolen, but does not require background checks for gun sales between private parties, nor does it impose a waiting period on firearm purchases, limit the number of guns that can be purchased at one time, or require gun dealers to obtain a license, according to the LCPGV.

3. March 8, 2012


University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Pittsburgh, Pa.

Around 1:40 p.m. on March 8, police say that John F. Shick, 30, entered the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and began shooting. One person was killed and seven wounded in the attack. Shick, who had reportedly been diagnosed with schizophrenia, was killed in a shootout with police

Weapons used: Shick was armed with two 9mm handguns

Guns bought legally?: No.

According to Allegheny County District Attorney Steve Zappala, Shick bought the weapons he used in New Mexico, which, according to the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, does not require a background check for firearm purchases between private individuals. According to an ATF investigation into the incident, Shick's Beretta 9mm was originally issued to a Texas sheriff's deputy in 1994. The deputy pawned the gun in 2000 and it eventually ended up at a gun show in Albequerque in 2010 where it was bought, without paperwork, and then sold via classified ad a year later. John Karnis, the man who bought the gun via the ad, told the ATF that he placed his own ad in the newspaper when he wanted to sell the gun in April 2011. Shick - who the seller described as "quiet and distant" - bought it from him, without paperwork.

The second firearm, an Arsenal Inc 9mm, was originally purchased in Albequerque in 1995 by a doctor who then sold it to a dealer, who then sold it to Karnis. Karnis sold both the Arsenal and the Beretta to Shick in April 2011.

Zappala said that Shick previously tried to buy a gun in Oregon, but was unable to do so, possibly because he had once been committed to a psychiatric institution there. Because of that, and another such commitment in New York, Shick would not have been able to buy a gun legally in Pennsylvania.

Zappala also said that Shick ordered the ammunition he used from Europe over the internet.

State gun laws: Pennsylvania requires a background check for private purchase of a firearm, but does not impose a limit on the number of firearms that can be purchased at one time, nor does the state impose a waiting period or regulate ammunition sales, according to the LCPGV.



4. April 2, 2012


Oikos University , Oakland, Calif.

On April 2, One L. Goh, 43, allegedly killed seven people and injured three more when he opened fire at the small Christian college in Oakland. Goh had been a nursing student at the college which catered to Korean immigrants, before withdrawing in 2011. He was reportedly angry that the college had not refunded several thousand dollars of his tuition.

Goh was arrested after walking into a nearby grocery store and reportedly saying, "I just shot some people." He has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of murder and three counts of attempted murder. Pretrial for the case is scheduled to begin Oct. 1.

Weapons used: A semiautomatic handgun and four magazines of ammunition

Gun bought legally?: Yes.

The gun was purchased in California about two months prior to the shooting, according to the Oakland Police Department.

State gun laws: By most accounts, California has the strictest gun laws in the country. According to the LCPGV, the state imposes a 10-day waiting period on all firearm purchases and in 1999 mandated that waiting periods and other restrictions be extended to purchases made at gun shows. California also bans all large capacity ammunition magazines and most assault weapons and 50 caliber rifles. In 2007, California became the first state to require microstamping of handguns. That's the process of imprinting microscopic characters on firearms that will transfer to bullet casings, thus allowing police to trace bullets found at a crime scene without having to recover the weapon itself.



5. May 30, 2012


Cafe Racer, Seattle, Wash.


Just before 11 a.m. on May 30, 40-year-old Ian L. Stawicki allegedly started shooting inside a Seattle café near the University of Washington-Seattle campus. Police say Stawicki killed four people inside the café, which was known as a gathering place for local artists and musicians. According to the Seattle Times, police say Stawicki then shot a woman near the Town Hall and stole her SUV. By 4p.m., he had reportedly abandoned the SUV and soon after being surrounded by police, fatally shot himself in the head.

Weapons used: Stawicki was armed with two .45 caliber semiautomatic handguns

Guns bought legally?: Yes.

Stawicki had legally purchased both guns, as well as two others. He also had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon.

In February 2008 Stawicki was charged with four misdemeanor domestic violence counts, but the charges were later dropped. In her statement, his girlfriend at the time wrote that "starting last winter, he became more violent, breaking my things, losing control of his feelings, there's no pattern." In 2010, he was arrested for allegedly assaulting his brother, though those charges were also dropped, according to the Times.

State gun laws: Washington State does not require background checks for the purchase of a firearm between private parties, according to the LCPGV. The National Rifle Association reports that the state does not require gun buyers to have a license or permit, nor do Washington State gun owners have to register their guns. The state does, according to the LCPGV, prohibit some individuals with records of domestic violence from owning firearms.



6. June 9, 2012


Auburn University pool party, Auburn, Ala.

During an afternoon pool party in an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus, 22-year-old Desmonte Leonard allegedly got in an argument over a woman and then opened fire, killing three people and injuring three others. Leonard eluded police for several days, and finally turned himself in on June 12.

In September, Leonard pleaded not guilty to three counts of capital murder, and two counts of assault.

Weapons used: Unclear. According to Captain Tom Stofer of the Auburn Police Department, police have found a firearm they believe may have been used in the shooting and have sent it for testing.

Gun bought legally?: Unclear.

State gun laws: Alabama does not require gun owners to register their firearms, nor does the state impose a waiting period or background check on private purchases, according to the LCPGV. The state also does not prohibit the sale or transfer of assault weapons or large capacity ammunition magazines. However, according to the NRA, "it is unlawful for a drug addict, habitual drunkard, or one who has been convicted of a crime of violence to own or possess a handgun." Minors are also not permitted to carry or possess handguns.



7. July 17, 2012


Copper Top bar, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

During the early morning hours of July 17, 44-year-old Nathan Van Wilkins allegedly opened fire in a crowded bar near the University of Alabama. Seventeen people were injured in the attack but no one was killed. According to the Tuscaloosa News, less than an hour before he arrived at the bar, Wilkins went to a nearby home and shot at a man inside the house, possibly in a case of mistaken identity.

Wilkins has been charged with 18 counts of attempted murder.

Weapon used: Unclear. According to Sgt. Kip Hart of the Tuscaloosa Sheriff's Department, Wilkins' gun has not yet been recovered, but he believes it was likely an "AK-47-type rifle."

Gun bought legally?: Unclear.

State gun laws: Alabama does not require gun owners to register their firearms, nor does the state impose a waiting period or background check on private purchases, according to the LCPGV. The state also does not prohibit the sale or transfer of assault weapons or large capacity ammunition magazines. However, according to the NRA, in Alabama "it is unlawful for a drug addict, habitual drunkard, or one who has been convicted of a crime of violence to own or possess a handgun." Minors are also not permitted to carry or possess handguns.



8. July 20, 2012


Century 16 movie theater, Aurora, Colo.

Just after midnight on July 20, police say James Holmes, dressed in black and sporting nearly head-to-toe tactical garb, set off some sort of smoke bomb inside Theater 9 of the Century 16 movie theater. Holmes allegedly began shooting at the audience, who was there to see a premiere of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises." Twelve people were killed, 58 others injured, several of whom are still hospitalized.

Holmes surrendered to police soon after the massacre in the parking lot behind the theater. His apartment was allegedly "booby-trapped," rigged with what the Aurora police chief described as "incendiary and chemical" devices which authorities disabled or detonated.


Holmes is under investigation for first-degree murder and will appear in court on July 31.

Weapons used: Police say Holmes used a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle, a shotgun and a .40 caliber Glock handgun

Guns bought legally?: Yes.

According to Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates, all three of the guns used in the incident, plus a second Glock allegedly found in Holmes' car, were purchased legally in the state of Colorado. In the weeks leading up to the incident, police say Holmes had purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition over the internet.

State gun laws: Colorado imposes no waiting period to purchase a firearm, nor does it impose a limit on the number of firearms that can be purchased at one time, according to the LCPGV. The state requires mentally ill individuals who are deemed ineligible for purchasing a firearm to be reported to the federal NICS database. In 2000, in the wake of the Columbine High School massacre, the state used a ballot initiative to close the so-called "gun show loophole," in which private sales do not require a background check. However, the state does not prohibit a person from purchasing assault weapons or large capacity magazines. Colorado gun owners do not have to obtain licenses, register their guns, or report lost or stolen guns.

9. August 5, 2012


Sikh Temple of Wisconsin, Oak Creek, Wis.


As worshippers prayed and meditated, 40-year-old Wade Michael Page walked into the temple and opened fire, killing six. Wade, who was reportedly a white supremacist, was killed in a shoot-out with police.

Weapons used: 9mm handgun


Guns bought legally?: Yes.


State gun laws: According to the National Rifle Association, Wisconsin requires no license or permit to purchase or carry a firearm. The LCFPGV reports that the state requires a 48-hour waiting period for the purchase of a handgun if the gun is purchased from a licensed federal dealer. That waiting period is not imposed for private sales. The state requires that mental health records be sent to a database used to background checks on people who purchase a gun from a licensed dealer.



9. August 31, 2012


Pathmark Super Mart, Old Bridge, N.J.


At around 4 a.m., former Marine Terence Tyler, 23, opened fire inside the grocery store where he had worked for less than a month. He killed two of his co-workers, 18-year-old Cristina LoBrutto and 24-year-old Bryan Breen, and then killed himself.

Weapons used: According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, Tyler used a WASR-10 rifle to kill LoBrutto and Breen. A WASR-10 is a Romanian rifle similar to an AK-47. He used a .45 caliber handgun to kill himself.


Gun bought legally?: Tyler purchased both guns - as well as a shotgun - legally in California between June 2010 and November 2011, but according to the county prosecutor's office, he "misrepresented certain details" on the applications for these weapons. Once bought, Tyler made modifications to the WASR-10, making it illegal in California. Tyler moved to New Jersey in June 2012; the WASR-10 is illegal in New Jersey.

State gun laws: According to the Brady Campaign, New Jersey had the nation's second strongest gun laws, with one handgun per month purchase limit, and a permit required to purchase all firearms. The NRA reports that an ID card is also required to purchase a rifle or shotgun in the state. However, according to the NRA, owners do not need to register their firearms.


10. September 27, 2012

Accent Signage Systems office, Minneapolis, Minn.


The day after he had been fired, Andrew Engeldinger, 36, walked into his former workplace and opened fire, killing four people and himself. Two other victims died later at the hospital, reportsCBS Minneapolis.


Weapons used: Glock 9mm handgun

Gun obtained legally?: According Captain Amelia Huffman of the Minneapolis Police Department, Engeldinger bought the gun legally and it was registered to him.

State gun laws: According to the NRA, a person must obtain a permit to purchase a handgun, but not a rifle or shotgun in Minnesota. The LCPGV reports that the state does not require a gun dealer to obtain a license. The Brady Campaign reports that a background check is not required to purchase a gun at a gun show or in a private sale in the state.



11. October 21, 2012

Azana Day Spa, Brookfield., Wis.


Radcliffe Franklin Haughton, 45, opened fire in a suburban day spa, killing his wife, Zina Haughton, and two other women, and injuring four others before killing himself.


In a written request for a restraining order filed Oct. 8, Zina Haughton said her husband was convinced she was cheating on him and that aside from the acid threat he also vowed to burn her and her family with gas. He said he would kill her if she ever left him or called the police, according to the court papers obtained Monday by The Associated Press.

Weapons used: .40 caliber semiautomatic handgun


Guns bought legally?: Unclear.

State gun laws: According to the NRA, Wisconsin requires no background check nor a license or permit to purchase or carry a firearm. The LCFPGV reports that the state requires a 48-hour waiting period for the purchase of a handgun if the gun is purchased from a licensed federal dealer. That waiting period is not imposed for private sales. The state requires that mental health records be sent to a database used to background checks on people who purchase a gun from a licensed dealer.



12. December 11, 2012

Clackamas Town Center, Clackamas, Ore.


Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, walked into the mall wearing a hockey-style mask and an ammunition-packed vest and opened fire, killing two people and then himself.

Weapons used: AR-15 rifle

Guns bought legally?: Not by Roberts. Police say Roberts had stolen the weapon from someone he knew.

State gun laws: According to the Brady Campaign, Oregon requires background checks for gun sales at gun shows, but does no require a state license to possess a handgun or handgun registration. The state also does not require firearm owners to report a stolen weapon.



13. December 14, 2012

Sandy Hook Elementary School, Newtown, Conn.

At just after 9:30 a.m., 20-year-old Adam Lanza opened fire inside the K-4th grade school, killing 20 children and six adult before turning a gun on himself. Lanza had also reportedly murdered his mother, Nancy Lanza, before going on his rampage.

Weapons used: Details are still emerging. Initially, police reportedly found two handguns - a Sig Sauer and a Glock - inside the school, and a .223 caliber rifle in a car at the scene. However, authorities now report that all the children killed in the incident were shot multiple times by a semiautomatic rifle.


Guns bought legally?: A federal official tells CBS News that, according to state records, all the weapons Lanza used were bought legally and were registered to his mother.

State gun laws: According to the NRA, Connecticut requires that a person have permit to purchase a handgun, but not rifle. Handguns - but not rifles - must also be licensed. The Brady Campaign calls the state's gun laws "strong."
