Jamaican patois Bible released – Di Gud Nyuuz bout Jiizas

Advocates view the translation as an empowering move that will affirm the indigenous tongue as a distinct language.

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Wednesday December 12, 2012 – After years of meticulous translation from the original Greek, the Bible Society in Jamaica is releasing print and audio CD versions of the first patois translation of the New Testament, or “Di Jamiekan Nyuu Testiment.”

The development provides vindication for English teacher Faith Linton, who was greeted with astonishment and opposition when she first proposed translating the Bible into Jamaica’s patois tongue in the late 1950s.

“There was shock at the mere suggestion,” said Linton, now an octogenarian and a longstanding board member of the Bible Society of the West Indies. “People were deeply ashamed of their mother tongue. It was always associated with illiteracy and social deprivation.”

The opposition has diminished somewhat in the intervening years, but patois in the pulpit remains a highly controversial issue.

Critics fear it will dilute Scripture and further erode the weak grasp that many poor Jamaicans are said to have on Standard English.

Advocates, on the other hand, view it as a bold, empowering move that will finally affirm the indigenous tongue as a distinct language in Jamaica.

Patois expert Hubert Devonish, a linguist who is coordinator of the Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies, sees the Bible translation as a big step toward getting the state to eventually embrace the creole language.

“We’ve now produced a major body of literature in the language, whatever people may think about it one way or the other. And that is part of the process of convincing people that this thing is a serious language with a standard writing system,” Devonish said.

Reverend Courtney Stewart, general secretary of the regional Bible society, said there is a widespread conviction that Scripture is best understood in a person’s spoken tongue. He predicts many Jamaicans will be inspired to hear and read the translation.

“It’s extremely powerful for people to hear Scripture in their own language, the language they speak and think in. It goes straight to their hearts and people say they are able to visualize it in a way they’ve never experienced before,” Stewart said.

Some religious leaders and other critics nevertheless characterize Jamaican patois as a rowdy, ever-changing vernacular that is fine in informal settings but inappropriate in a place of worship.

“Patois is not potent enough to be able to carry the meaning of the Gospel effectively. It just does not have the capacity to properly reflect the word of God,” said Bishop Alvin Bailey, leader of the evangelical Holiness Christian Church in Portmore.

The New Testament translation was recently released in England, home to a large Jamaican diaspora.

In the British town of Northampton, the Reverend Dennis Hines of the New Testament Church of God said the patois Bible has been received well, especially in prisons where he works as a chaplain and inmates of Jamaican heritage are clamouring for a copy.

“Just to know that there was a Bible in their native tongue has made people feel really proud and excited,” said Hines, a Jamaican who moved to England as a boy.

The translation is a stickier subject in Jamaica, where activists are pushing for patois to be granted official status alongside English and used in classrooms.

Clive Forrester, who teaches the Jamaican tongue at Canada’s York University, said the biggest obstacle to launching a patois Bible on the island has always been a psychosocial one, not a linguistic one.

“The language can handle any concept or idea in the New Testament. It’s the average Jamaican speaker who has a hard time accepting Jamaican Creole in written contexts and especially one as formal as the Bible,” Forrester said.

The Bible has already been translated into hundreds of obscure languages and dialects, among them the Ga language of Ghana, the Mi’kmaq spoken mostly by Indians in eastern Canada, and Gullah, which is largely spoken by African-Americans in isolated coastal areas of South Carolina and Georgia.

Now, the advocates of Jamaican patois are thrilled to see their time finally arrive, particularly with the island marking its 50th anniversary of independence.

With Christmas in the air, the time may be right to reflect on the depiction of the angel Gabriel’s visit to the Virgin Mary that foretold the birth of Jesus.

The New King James Bible’s version of Luke reads, “And having come in, the angel said to her, ‘Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.”’

The patois version reads: “Di ienjel go tu Mieri an se tu ar se, ‘Mieri, mi av nyuuz we a go mek yu wel api. Gad riili riili bles yu an im a waak wid yu aal di taim.” Click here to receive free news bulletins via email from Caribbean360. (View sample)

THE WEEKLY CYCLE HAS NEVER CHANGED

The writings of historians, the records of chronographers, the languages of earth, the calendars of time, and the existence of the Jewish race—all testify to the fact that the weekly cycle on our calendars today is the same as in earlier centuries—going back to the time of Christ, to Moses, and beyond.

In the beginning, God gave us the weekly seven-day cycle, with the Sabbath as the last day. That pattern has never changed. The seventh day of the week today is the true Bible Sabbath. Our seventh day is the Sabbath which Jesus kept; it was the Sabbath in the time of Moses when the Ten Commandments were written down. Historians and scientists all agree that this is true.

If there had been any change in the weekly cycle, between the time of Creation and the time of Moses, a correction would have been made when the Ten Commandments were given to the Hebrews. From that time, on down to the present, there have always been Jews to testify as to the true Sabbath. It is the same seventh day of the week which is on our calendars. While all the other ancient races are now intermingled, the Jews have been kept separate so they could testify to the fact that our seventh day is the Bible Sabbath!

The yearly cycle has been changed. In 1582, the length of the year was changed to include the leap year. This changeover resulted in October 1582 having only 21 days! But each week remained the same seven days in length. Thursday, October 4, was followed by Friday, October 15. God has divinely protected the weekly cycle down through the ages. If He had not done this, it would be impossible to keep the Sabbath holy, as He has commanded. But, because He has, we have no excuse not to. The seventh day is a holy day, made holy by the command of God. All calendars agree: The seventh day is the Sabbath. Sunday is the first day; the day called "Saturday" in the English langauge is the Sabbath.

However, in 108 of the 160 languages of mankind, the seventh day is called "the Sabbath"! Did you know that? Dr. William Mead Jones of London prepared a chart proving this. (A copy of this chart can be obtained free of charge from the publisher of this book: Ask for "The Chart of the Week" [BS–28-29]. English is one of the few major languages in which the seventh day is not called "the Sabbath."

Here are ten examples: Hebrew: Shabbath / Greek: Sabbaton / Latin: Sabbatum / Arabic: Assabit / Persian: Shambin / Russian: Subbota / Hindustani: Shamba / French: Samedi / Italian: Sabbato / Spanish: Sabado.

"By calculating the eclipses, it can be proven that no time has been lost and the creation days were seven, divided into 24 hours each."—Dr. Hinkley, The Watchman, July 1926 [Hinkley was a well-known astronomer].

"The human race never lost the septenary [seven day] sequence of week days and that the Sabbath of these latter times comes down to us from Adam, though the ages, without a single lapse."—Dr. Totten, professor of astronomy at Yale University.

"Seven has been the ancient and honored number among the nations of the earth. They have measured their time by weeks from the beginning. The origin of this was the Sabbath of God, as Moses has given the reasons for it in his writings."—Dr. Lyman Coleman.

"There has been no change in our calendar in past centuries that has affected in any way the cycle of the week."—James Robertson, Director American Ephemeris, Navy Department, U.S. Naval Observatory, Washington, D.C., March 12, 1932.

"It can be said with assurance that not a day has been lost since Creation, and all the calendar changes notwithstanding, there has been no break in the weekly cycle."—Dr. Frank Jeffries, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and Research Director of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich, England.

It is remarkable how complete is the Biblical and historical evidence corroborating the fact that the Bible Sabbath was given to us by the God of heaven. Let us keep the Sabbath that Jesus kept! He worshiped on the Bible Sabbath, and never told us to stop keeping it. No one else in the Bible said to either. The seventh day is the Sabbath, for God never changed it.

How very thankful we can be that our God is so reliable. He does not change this way or that. He has a holy law which we must obey. But He sent His only begotten Son to die in order to enable us to do it.

Soon we will be in heaven, and praise Him for His great Gift.

For exciting proof that the weekly cycle comes down to us from the Creation of our world, as described in Genesis 1 and 2 of the Bible, click here on CHART OF THE WEEK.

Religion 101: Confusion over word 'cult' can be blamed on 'wordnapping'

Saturday, Nov. 05, 2011

By Clark McCall

When Robert Jeffress, a Dallas evangelical megastar, introduced Rick Perry at a gathering in Washington, D.C., he told reporters afterward that Mitt Romney belonged to a "cult" and a Christian "should always prefer a competent Christian to a competent non-Christian like Mitt Romney."

The firestorm Jeffress ignited makes me think that some of the modern definitions for "cult" might be examples of what I would term "wordnapping." I suggest this because an obsolete word, "napper," meaning "thief," is the term from which the well-known "kidnapper" has been derived. A wordnapper would be someone who takes the original meaning of a word and turns it into something that conveys another intent.

When I turn to my Britannica-Webster Dictionary, I find "cult" is defined as "formal religious veneration." It also tells me it represents "a system of religious beliefs and ritual of those who practice it." A wordnapper would be someone who takes the original meaning for "cult" and turns it into a term conveying a different and negative intent.

In the 1950s, Walter Martin, a prominent evangelical scholar and author, started a modern usage of "cult" when he wrote a series of books, "The Kingdom of the Cults." He suggested that some groups who considered themselves Christian were really only cults. They may have some beliefs in common with evangelically oriented churches, but were divergent enough in their doctrines to not qualify as true Christian organizations, from Martin's perspective.

The word "cult" continued to evolve until it developed into an evil connotation for fanatical groups, such as Jim Jones and his People's Temple followers. On Nov. 18, 1978, more than 900 people died in a murder-suicide tragedy at a remote South American compound in Jonestown, Guyana.

The word "cult" continued to solidify into something sinister when David Koresh and 75 Branch Davidians perished in flames at their Waco, Texas, compound on April 19, 1993, after a lengthy standoff with federal authorities.

Consequently the word "cult" has changed from "a system of religious beliefs" to something deemed heinous by many Americans today.

We don't know what version of the word "cult" Jeffress meant when he said Romney's faith disqualified him as a presidential candidate. We also don't know the essence of what Romney believed he was asking Perry to "repudiate" in Jeffress' remarks. Nor do we know what Perry was thinking he disagreed with when he simply said he did not "agree" with Jeffress' remarks.

This whole unfortunate incident may have come from a history of wordnapping surrounding the word "cult."

What is most sad is the whole matter should have been a nonissue. It involved shooting down a straw man because when the founders of our Constitution put Article 6 in place, it was designed to prevent a religious test for anyone pursuing political office.

The Most Important Message For Humanity Today

    The Third Angel's Message
    Revelation 14:9-12 (Hebrew)

    .
    .

9And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,

10The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

11And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

12Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. ...Revelation 14:9-12 (King James Version)

To The Rest of the World: n

    Apocalipsis 14:9-12 (Reina-Valera Antigua)

14:9-12 (Chinese Union Version (Traditional))

14:9-12 (Russian Synodal Version)

    10тот будет пить вино ярости Божией, вино цельное, приготовленное в чаше гнева Его, и будет мучим в огне и сере пред святыми Ангелами и пред Агнцем;

14:9-12 (Ukrainian Bible)

    Revelation 14:9-12 (Maori Bible)

10 makatilaw gid sang kaakig sang Dios.

    10 Az is iszik az Isten haragjának borából, a mely elegyítetlenül töltetett az õ haragjának poharába: és kínoztatik tûzzel és kénkõvel a szent angyalok elõtt és a Bárány elõtt;

Note: Could not get the Hindi version of the Third Angel's Message; It's good that most Indians can read English!

I also had great difficulty in getting the verses in Japanese, Urdu and Farsi (Persian). We will continue to find the means to ensure that this solemn warning reaches everyone on earth.
