The Good—Not Great—Commission of Women Pastors

Andrew Francis|August 13, 2026

As much of the US spent the evening of Saturday, July 4 outside, celebrating the nation’s independence with barbecues and fireworks, I too was outdoors, though I was not thinking about America’s 250th birthday. Instead, I was at the hot and humid Camp Victory Lake in Hyde Park, New York, for the Northeastern Conference’s second week of camp meeting, which included its annual ordination service. What occurred during that special service helped illustrate the denominational progress Adventism has made, while also highlighting what has been described as its “hypocritical” nature.

Four ordinands stood on stage alongside top conference administrators and General Conference (GC) Vice President Pierre Omeler, who gave the program’s homily. All four ordinands had been serving as pastors and leading churches in the Northeastern Conference for at least four years. All four were vetted by a conference ordination committee to determine their “spiritual stability,” “social maturity,” and other character qualifications. All four went through the same ceremonial procedures during the July 4th ordination program. Yet, only three pastors were ordained.

What Even is the Difference?

Petrice Wideman holds her certificate after being commissioned as a pastor at the Northeastern Conference camp meeting. Photo courtesy of Petrice Wideman

The fourth pastor was Petrice Wideman, lead pastor of the Stuyvesant Heights Church, one of the few women pastors in the conference. She is also Omeler’s daughter. Despite being listed as an “ordinand” in the camp meeting bulletin, Wideman was granted the distinction of being commissioned by the conference, an alternative to ordination that is used almost exclusively for women pastors. While both require nearly identical qualifications and expectations of the candidates, ordination is superior to being commissioned, as it grants the pastor the ability to plant churches and hold administrative positions. Many maintain that different distinctions are just a tool to limit a woman’s pastoral capacities.

“It’s a semantic thing where one word is used for women, but one word is used for men,” Wideman explained. “But the thing is, words are very impactful. So on the one hand, it’s not much of a difference, but then on the other hand, the small distinction is everything, where for many people it will always justify the subordination or devaluing of women leaders.”

The Atlantic Union, which the Northeastern Conference is a part of, currently permits the hiring and commissioning of female pastors. A few other North American Division (NAD) unions permit women’s ordination, in direct opposition to the GC’s mandate based on a vote during the 2015 GC Session to not allow women’s ordination. This distinction, however, seems to be lost on many church members, as seen during Wideman’s commissioning.

A nation under God: Rebuilding in Nehemiah

By Stephen Hair

Aug 19, 2026 Updated

Anyone who is concerned about the proper effects of Christianity upon a nation knows the name of William Wilberforce, the power behind the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in the year 1807. Wilberforce was elected to Parliament from the county of Hull in 1780 at the age of 21. He was converted to Christ in 1785 through the witness of his old schoolmaster from Hull, Isaac Milner. Shortly after that, partly through the influence of the converted former slave trader John Newton and partly through others, Wilberforce began his long campaign against slavery.

Wilberforce’s first parliamentary bill was to “discuss” abolition. It was introduced in the House of Commons by his friend, Prime Minister William Pitt, in 1788, and it passed. But when the bill came up for discussion at the next session of Parliament in 1789, it was hotly opposed by the commercial lobby that backed slavery, and the move to limit the abuse was defeated.

In 1791 Wilberforce, now backed by a coalition of like-minded men known as the Clapham Sect, tried again, but again he was defeated. It was the same in 1792. There were times when public opinion ran in Wilberforce’s favor. At other times, as in the eyes of the French Revolution, opinion was against any change at all. After the fall of Robespierre in France in 1796, the mood of the country turned toward abolition, but when the abolition bill reached the House of Commons in that year, it was again defeated.

So also in 1798, 1799, 1800, and 1801.

It was not until February 4, 1807, that the abolition document finally passed the House of Lords, and not until February 22, 1807, that it passed the Commons. Nineteen years had gone by. Men had grown old in the cause. Some had died. Yet when news of the abolition of the slave trade reached Wilberforce late on the evening of February 22, the reformer looked into the face of his old friend and fellow abolitionist, Henry Thorton, and said, “Well, Henry, what shall we abolish next?”

Montevideo hosts a progressive congress after three consecutive electoral defeats in the region

More than a hundred lawmakers, former presidents, ministers and political figures from fifteen countries across the Americas gather from Friday at Uruguay's Legislative Palace in Montevideo for the third Pan-American Congress, a parliamentary forum of progressive forces running until Sunday. Organisers put attendance at more than 150 participants.

The meeting takes place at an adverse moment for those forces. The last three presidential elections in Latin America were won by conservative candidates: José Antonio Kast in Chile, Keiko Fujimori in Peru and Abelardo de la Espriella in Colombia, all three sworn in this year. Uruguay and Brazil remain the main centre-left governments in South America.

“We are not arriving in a golden age, but in full recognition of those defeats,” said the congress's general coordinator, David Adler, an economist, co-founder of the Progressive International and a former adviser to US Senator Bernie Sanders. He explained that some sessions will be held behind closed doors “to talk frankly about good practices and also about experiments that have failed to reach the public.”

Under the slogan “Solidarity among peoples, sovereignty among nations,” the programme is organised around four themes: peace, security and multilateralism; sustainable development and regional integration; digital sovereignty and artificial intelligence; and wellbeing and care. Organisers also propose rebalancing relations between the north and south of the continent. “We have the International Monetary Fund and the Organization of American States, both headquartered in Washington, which shows an architecture in which the north speaks and expects the south to obey,” Adler said.

The congress was created in 2024 in Bogotá on the initiative of then Colombian president Gustavo Petro and held its second edition in Mexico City in 2025. It closes a week of events in the Uruguayan capital that included a gathering of women in politics, a closed forum of fourteen parties from eleven countries and the relaunch of the magazine Nueva Sociedad.

The Uruguayan delegation will be led by President Yamandú Orsi, who opens the forum, alongside Vice-President Carolina Cosse, former vice-president Lucía Topolansky and the secretary of the presidency, Alejandro Sánchez. International participants include former presidents Ernesto Samper of Colombia and Gabriel Boric of Chile; the governor of Buenos Aires province, Axel Kicillof; Brazilian senator Humberto Costa, of the Workers' Party; Mexican Morena official Carolina Rangel; and US representatives Pramila Jayapal and Jesús García.

Adler highlighted the choice of Uruguay as host. “We have a great deal to learn from Uruguayan society, which has a very living memory and knew how to deepen its democratic roots,” he said.

Former Chilean president Gabriel Boric, who arrived the previous day accompanied by several former cabinet members, is also expected at the inauguration. Boric had led the presentation of the Latin American publication Nueva Sociedad on the eve of the event.

The first edition of the conclave was held in 2024 in Bogotá, convened by then-president Gustavo Petro. The second congress took place in Mexico last year, inaugurated by President Claudia Sheinbaum, and brought together representatives from 12 countries.

The current congress is backed by the Broad Front, Uruguay’s left-wing alliance, and will gather legislators from 15 nations, including three U.S. Democratic legislators.

THE NEHEMIAH ALLIANCE

THE NEHEMIAH ALLIANCE

Rebuild our walls, restore our homes, and renew our hearts through unified prayer, fasting & repentance

Sundown September 10th (9/10/26) to Sundown All Saints Sunday (11/1/26)

Nehemiah Alliance is a growing global grassroots movement of “We His People” for Spiritual Renewal.

Inspired by the example of Nehemiah in Sacred Scripture, who rebuilt the walls of his homeland in just 52 days, we have surveyed the spiritual condition of our own nations and recognize that the spiritual walls of blessing and protection are in need of rebuilding.

Likewise, we are seeking the official blessing of our governmental authorities, just as Nehemiah sought the blessing of his king, while gathering an Alliance of Leaders, as Nehemiah gathered the Gatekeepers, to mobilize “We His People” for 52 days of unified prayer, fasting, and repentance unto our merciful Father.

Together, we are crying out to God in One Voice to rebuild our walls, restore our homes, revive our hearts, renew Liberty and Justice for all, and reunite us one Nation, One Blood under God.

Persecution is coming, but should Christians be afraid?

Beginning with Cain and Abel and continuing through Jesus, Stephen, the martyrs, and the final crisis, this powerful message reveals why the great controversy has always centered on true worship, obedience, and faithfulness to God.

The question is not simply whether persecution will come, but whether we know Jesus well enough to stand when it does.

Progressives, socialists to travel to PanAmerican summit to push back on Trump’s policies in region

U.S. lawmakers and candidates will gather in Uruguay to forge cross-border links, aiming to counter the Trump administration's “Donroe Doctrine” and promote an alternative foreign policy.

A group of progressive U.S. lawmakers and socialist candidates are set to attend the PanAmerican Congress in Uruguay later this month to “build a lasting coalition” of progressives to push back against the “right-wing forces” in the Western Hemisphere.

“We need to build a durable and lasting coalition of progressives that can take on the right-wing forces and answer them with the necessary call of the people,” Democrat Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a leading progressive in the House said in a statement.

Along with Jayapal, other progressive and Democratic Socialists are set to attend the conference, which will take place from Aug. 21-23.

Two Democratic Socialist candidates who won their primary elections earlier this year in New York City, Claire Valdez and Darializa Avila Chevalier, will make the journey to Montevideo, Uruguay, where it is being held. They will also be joined by Rep. Chuy Garcia, D-Ill., and New Jersey House candidate Adam Hamawy.

“We need a foreign policy built on international solidarity and cooperation — not imperialism, war and extraction,” Valdez told Politico Playbook. “The threats we face, from climate change to mass displacement to the rise of fascism, don’t stop at borders, and neither can our response.”

The PanAmerican Congress was founded in 2024 to bring “together progressive legislators from across North, Central, South America and the Caribbean” to cooperate across national boundaries and to push back against ascendant right-wing governments across Latin America.

Last week, Rep. Jayapal sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlining her opposition to the Trump administration’s “Donroe Doctrine,” a new spin on the historic Monroe Doctrine–a 19th century policy of the U.S. government that declared the Western Hemisphere off-limits to further European colonization.

Jayapal said that the Trump administration’s policies, which include collaborating with friendly Latin American governments to combat the drug trade, fight transnational crime, and reduce illegal immigration flows, are for partisan gain.

“Taken together, the interventions conducted under the banner of the ‘Donroe’ Doctrine appear to follow a partisan playbook: the endorsement of favored candidates, the placement of political allies, the weaponization of tariffs and sanctions, and, where those fail, the application of direct military force,” Jayapal and 10 other House colleagues wrote in the letter obtained by The Hill.

“These are tactics that destabilize our hemisphere and endanger our neighbors,” the lawmakers added.

Teacher unions funnel funds to Democratic lawmakers

The influence of teacher unions

(The Center Square) – The nation’s two largest teachers' unions directed thousands of dollars in campaign contributions to Democratic members of key congressional education committees, according to federal campaign finance records reviewed by The Center Square.

The congressional members whose campaigns received the money supported legislation favoring schools and teachers.

The National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers represent millions of educators nationwide and are among the most politically active labor organizations in the country. The NEA has about 3 million members, while the AFT represents roughly 1.8 million.

Lance Izumi of the Pasadena, Calif.-based Pacific Research Institute said teacher unions' political spending can influence education policy at the federal, state and local levels.
Editor's Note

This is the third in a series on teacher unions, their influence on elected officials and the cost to taxpayers.
Izumi described the national teachers' unions as an “800-pound gorilla” in education politics and pointed to issues including charter schools and school choice as examples of areas where unions have sought to shape policy.

“They don't want the competition,” Izumi, senior director of PRI's Center for Education, told The Center Square during an exclusive interview.

Unions are funded with dues taken out of teacher paychecks, so critics say the taxpayers are basically funding the lobbying and campaign contributions.

The Center Square reached out to both the NEA and AFT multiple times for comments, but union officials did not respond.

AI just created a virus not found in nature, and scientists are worried

This technique could lead to new treatments for antibiotic-resistant bugs, but some scientists say the technology could be misused

Viruses

Scientists used artificial intelligence to generate new viruses. The landmark first could lead to new antimicrobial drugs—and may pose immense danger to human health.

Scientists at Stanford University and the Arc Institute, a nonprofit AI and biology research organization, made the viruses using the actual genome of a bacteriophage—a type of virus that can kill bacteria—called ΦX174 (pronounced FYE-ex-174) as a template.

Using two large language models trained on the genomes of more than two million other bacteriophages, the scientists generated new, not-found-in-nature viruses. In a paper in the journal Science, they show that these viruses can kill even antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

“In this case, we wanted the model to generate the entire genome end-to-end in a single left-to-right pass,” said Brian Hie, an assistant professor at Stanford and co-author of the paper, in a statement. “We didn’t add anything.”

Making novel genes is not new, but creating an entire functional genome is much trickier—genes have complex patterns of interaction, and all their cascading effects need to be taken into account for the result to function as a comprehensive body. A single mutation can disrupt that delicate system, making the entire thing nonviable. Simple viral genomes are a fraction of a fraction as large as a human’s, but they are still incredibly complex.

The AI models were able to come up with thousands of bacteriophage genomes, nearly 300 of which the researchers then chemically synthesized. Of these, 16 of them proved to be viable and able to kill certain strains of Escherichia coli—including strains of the bacterium that had mutated to be resistant to the original reference genome of ΦX174.

The impetus for this work, according to the researchers, is that drug-resistant bacteria are rife and growing. More than 2.8 million antimicrobial-resistant infections occur in the U.S. each year, killing more than 35,000 people on average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Having a drug based on the 16 phages could help fight antibiotic-resistant strains more effectively, Hie said.

The Vatican isn’t a campaign stop and Rep. Salazar shouldn’t have treated it as one | Opinion

Mary Anna Mancuso

Wed, August 19, 2026 at 3:08 PM EDT

As a Catholic, I'm offended. As a Floridian, I'm exhausted. It seems there are no lengths to which U.S. Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar, a Miami Republican, won't go to promote her immigration bill.

Even the pope isn't off limits. Last week, after meeting with Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, she quickly took to social media to say she was grateful to "place the DIGNITY Act in the Holy Father's hands." The video posted to her social media channels, shot in front of the Vatican, was in poor taste. What I saw was a South Florida congresswoman using the Vatican as a backdrop to push her legislation.

You don't have to be Catholic to understand why it's offensive. It looks like Salazar used her meeting with the pope to create the impression of support for her legislation. That should bother anyone, religious or not.

The meeting itself wasn't a problem. There's nothing wrong with an elected official discussing immigration with the pope. Immigration is both a moral and political issue that affects millions, and people of faith often bring their convictions into public life.

Leo has spoken directly on immigration. On June 25, 2026, the pope wrote a letter to America marking the 250th anniversary of the United States: "To receive [immigrants] with compassion and generosity is not only an act of charity, but also a recognition of the dignity that belongs to every human person," he wrote.

Many politicians have visited the Vatican and afterward have posted photos of their time with the pope. I don't think that's wrong. The difference is that Salazar used the opportunity to spotlight her legislation. The pope hasn't endorsed her bill; she shouldn't be trying to make it look that way.

But in politics, optics matter. And that was the point. Salazar, in what appeared to be a staged moment, created an impression the facts don't support.

Salazar's office told me it was "entirely appropriate to discuss immigration and the bipartisan work she is leading" during the visit. The statement from her office said Salazar spoke with the pope "about immigration and the dignity of migrants, issues that are central to the Catholic Church and that Pope Leo himself has made a priority, and shared with him the bipartisan solution she has been working on for years."

The Unholy Alliance You Weren’t Supposed to Notice

Kelsey Reinhardt on August 12, 2026

Something unusual happened on October 8, 2023.

The morning after Hamas slaughtered 1,200 people in southern Israel, after women were raped, children were burned, and families were dragged into tunnels, demonstrators took to the streets and college campuses across the US, not in mourning, but in celebration.

Progressive activists marched alongside Islamist organizers. Transgender flags flew next to keffiyehs. Students at elite universities declared a sadistic massacre to be the opening act of a revolution.

It was, as one observer noted, Bolshevik demagoguery at its finest. The raped and murdered were recast as oppressors. The rapists and murderers became the oppressed.

What you were witnessing has a name.

Scholars and analysts call it “the red-green alliance”: a working coalition between the radical secular left and Islamist political movements. It is not a formal organization. It has no single headquarters. But it is real, it is growing, and its ambitions are not modest.

To understand it, you have to understand what holds it together: because on the surface, it makes no sense at all.

The radical left champions women’s autonomy, sexual liberation, and secular governance. Islamist political theology holds to the authority of Sharia, traditional gender roles, and the supremacy of religious law. These are not minor differences. They are irreconcilable visions of human life and social order.

And yet they march together. They fundraise together. They are reshaping Democratic primaries together.

What binds them is not a shared vision of the future. It is a shared enemy: the Judeo-Christian foundations of Western civilization, our natural law tradition, our ordered liberty and our understanding of the human person as made in the image of God and therefore possessed of an inherent dignity that no state can confer or revoke.

Both movements, in their activist forms, are united by what they oppose. And that opposition has proven sufficient to make them allies.

At the start of 2019, fewer than 2,000 active satellites circled Earth. By June 2026 there were 15,711 — and nearly two out of every three belonged to a single constellation: SpaceX's Starlink.

A June 2026 traffic index counted nearly eight times as many working satellites as existed at the start of 2019, with Starlink making up 65.97 percent.

Look Up’s quarterly space index, released on 2 June 2026, counted 15,711 active satellites in Earth orbit. It assigned 10,365 of them to SpaceX’s Starlink constellation. That is 65.97 percent, making “nearly two out of every three” the arithmetic of this particular catalog.

The same index put the active population below 2,000 at the start of 2019. The total had therefore grown almost eightfold in a little more than seven years. That interval is unusually revealing because the first full batch of 60 Starlink satellites launched in May 2019.

These are dated operational counts, not permanent facts. “Active” is judged from tracking and operational evidence, and different catalogs can reach different totals. The June numbers should be read as a coherent snapshot from one provider, not a universally standardized census.

The 15,711 figure came from a commercial traffic index

Look Up is a French space-situational-awareness company operating tracking radars and a data platform called SYNAPSE. Its second-quarter 2026 index, produced with the French magazine Le Point, reported 15,711 active satellites as of the start of June. The previous edition three months earlier had counted 14,389.

That is an increase of 1,322 active spacecraft in roughly one quarter. The index attributed 3,320 new active Starlinks to the preceding year, while also recording growth in Chinese fleets. It listed China at 1,286 active satellites, including the developing Qian Fan and GuoWang systems, and Eutelsat OneWeb at 651.

The denominator matters. The report was counting working satellites, not every human-made object overhead. It separately said that more than 33,000 cataloged objects were being tracked, including active payloads, rocket bodies and debris. A piece of fragmentation debris does not become a satellite in the 15,711 total simply because it circles Earth.

What if America Went Completely Dark?

The power grid relies on thousands of aging, hand-built transformers. If enough fail, the blackout could last years.

Aug. 18, 2026Updated 9:20 a.m. ET

The snipers had been shooting for nearly 10 minutes before someone called 911. A man driving down the highway told the police he thought he heard fireworks as he passed Pacific Gas and Electric’s Metcalf electrical substation, 15 miles southeast of San Jose. An engineer at a nearby power plant said he thought it was gunfire. Maybe more calls would have come in, but the communication link between the substation and PG&E, along with several phone and internet cables, had been severed. It was April 16, 2013.

The shooters — two, maybe more — took up positions 30 to 40 yards outside the substation fence, in the dry scrubland near Coyote Creek. At 1:31 a.m., after a security camera recorded what looked like a signal from a flashlight, they began firing high-powered rifles into the facility. Sparks flew into the air whenever the bullets grazed the chain-link fence, but most of the shots hit their apparent targets: a row of truck-size power transformers, which step down high-voltage electricity to lower voltages so it can be sent to local homes and businesses. Because this was Silicon Valley, those customers included some of the largest tech companies in the world.

After some 120 shots, 17 of Metcalf’s transformers had been disabled. The attackers knew to aim for the units’ cooling systems, oil-filled fins similar to those on a radiator, which draw heat away from the electrified core. That allowed the oil, 52,000 gallons of it, to drain out slowly so that the transformers wouldn’t fail right away, which would have triggered an alarm. The gunmen could take their time.

At 1:50 a.m., there was another flicker from a flashlight, and the shooting stopped. One minute later, the police arrived at the substation, but by then, the shooters were gone. The police looked around and, finding nothing suspicious, left as well. It wasn’t until a utility worker arrived at 3:15 a.m. that the extent of the damage was clear.

All these are the beginning of sorrows.

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.

For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Cuban foreign agent running for Congress claims conflicting residencies

Cuban foreign agent running for Congress claims conflicting residencies

A registered foreign agent for Cuba is running for Congress in Rhode Island despite attesting that he lives in both the Ocean State and Florida, documents reviewed by the Washington Examiner show.

GOP House candidate Victor Mellor wrote Englewood, Florida, as his residence in a June filing with the Department of Justice and a Warwick, Rhode Island, address as his "business address" — despite campaigning for Rhode Island's 2nd Congressional District. He also obtained a July marriage license in Florida that seemingly contradicted the DOJ filing by labeling Warwick as his "residence." The city's public property records further complicate the picture, listing a different couple as owners of the property at the Warwick address.

The records raise questions about Mellor's Rhode Island roots as he competes with GOP-endorsed primary opponent Stephen Skoly for incumbent Rep. Seth Magaziner's (D-RI) seat. Mellor has the support of former Donald Trump advisers Rudy Giuliani and Michael Flynn. He also counts Trump allies Roger Stone and Joseph Flynn, Michael Flynn's brother, as campaign staffers.

Mellor's campaign did not respond to the Washington Examiner's request for comment. A campaign spokesperson told the Providence Journal that the Florida "address discrepancy" in the DOJ filing "stems from a clerical error made by the law firm Vic has used in the past." Mellor is a Rhode Island native who "continues to reside in Warwick," the spokesperson told the paper.

However, Mellor and his female partner's names do not appear in search results in Warwick's property database. Instead, Sarasota County, Florida's property appraiser lists the couple as owners of a parcel at the same Englewood address Mellor reported as his residence to the DOJ. Sarasota County last updated the listing on Sunday.

What happens when the “common good” begins to override religious liberty and obedience to God?

In this powerful present truth message, we examine the trial of Jesus, the dangers of church and state uniting, and the growing pressure to compromise Biblical truth for the sake of unity. Will God’s people stand faithful when the final crisis comes?

The Apostle Peter in Rome

Jesus’ chief disciple examined

Nicola Denzey Lewis June 28, 2026

In this blog post, Brown University Religious Studies professor Nicola Denzey Lewis answers frequently asked questions about the apostle Peter. Denzey Lewis appears in the CNN series Finding Jesus: Faith, Fact, Forgery, which aims to investigate artifacts that shed light on the world in which Jesus lived.—Ed.

What traditions connect the apostle Peter to Rome?

The Repentant St. Peter by El Greco. Photo: The Phillips Collection.

Jesus’ chief disciple, Peter (also called Simon Peter or Cephas), has been associated with Rome for nearly 2,000 years. The earliest testimony to the apostle Peter’s presence in Rome is a letter from a Christian deacon named Gaius. Writing probably toward the end of the second century C.E.—so, around 170 or 180 C.E.—Gaius tells about the wondrous things in Rome, including something called a tropaion (see below for more) where Peter established a church—in fact, the Church, the Roman Catholic church at the site where St. Peter’s Basilica is today. But there are other traditions besides Peter’s tropaion.

One early Christian text, the Apocryphal Acts of Peter, recounts many things that Peter did in the city. At one point in Acts of Peter, Peter is taunted by a flamboyant heretic, Simon Magus. Simon challenges Peter to a flying contest around the Roman Forum, but Peter’s prayers make Simon crash to the ground, proving that Simon’s powers are not as great as his own.

At the end of this text, Peter, not wishing to be martyred for his faith, flees from Roman authorities on the Via Appia leading out of the city. Rather unexpectedly, Peter meets Jesus, who is traveling in the opposite direction. He asks Jesus, “Where are you going?” Jesus tells Peter that he is going to Rome “to be crucified again.” Peter realizes, from this, that he cannot flee from his fate.

“Where are you going?” in Latin is “Quo Vadis?” and there’s a medieval church in Rome called the Church of Quo Vadis at the spot where Peter met Jesus. To prove that his vision was real, you can still see there a bit of marble pavement which the faithful say miraculously preserve
Jesus’ footprints.

Matthew McConaughey drops new hint about politics after meeting Pope Leo XIV

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK: Actor Matthew McConaughey said he could see himself “adding to or working on” a constitution built around common ground among religions.

McConaughey, who calls himself an aggressively centrist Christian, has previously been asked about running for office, including governor of his home state.

The comments came in a USA TODAY interview, published on Saturday, August 15, after his meeting with Pope Leo XIV in Vatican City.

Matthew McConaughey says religion could inform politics

McConaughey said he sees common ground among religions as something that could inform a political system.

“There’s still a constitution out there to be written that all religions could agree on,” he told USA TODAY. “There's so much commonality.”

He said he was interested in the possibility of “adding to or working on” such a constitution, calling it “a great thing to share.”

McConaughey also drew a line between religious teachings and the separation of church and state.

“Even though I agree with the separation of church and state, the values of those should bleed down into the values of any political system,” he said.

'March for Jesus' will bring Christians to the streets of Buenos Aires

Thousands of Christians gather near Argentina's National Congress in Buenos Aires for a day of prayer, worship and public proclamation of faith during a previous March for Jesus rally. March for Jesus

Christians from churches across Argentina will march through central Buenos Aires on Monday, Aug. 17, joining a public day of prayer, worship and proclamation called "March for Jesus."

The march begins at 1 p.m. at Avenida de Mayo and Perú Street and sets off at 2 p.m. toward Plaza de los Dos Congresos, where the main event will take place.

The date coincides with Argentina's national holiday commemorating the "Passing into Immortality" of Gen. José de San Martín.

The program will include praise, worship and prayer for Argentina and its authorities. Musicians and representatives from various faith communities will also participate.

Organizers have described the event as a public expression of evangelical unity and an opportunity to bring a message of faith, peace and hope to the city's streets. They expect a large turnout, with believers attending from across the country.

The Buenos Aires march follows a recent gathering in Rosario. On Nov. 18, 2024, a large crowd of Christians gathered at the Monumento Nacional a la Bandera (National Flag Memorial) for a collective day of worship and prayer.

"March for Jesus" traces its roots to London in 1987, where it grew out of a collaboration between Youth With A Mission, Pioneer and Ichthus Christian Fellowship.

A Biblical Response to Fear-Based End Times Hysteria

Bible Megaphone

Aug 14, 2026

Is the Papacy the Antichrist? What does the Bible actually say about the Pope, Daniel 7, Revelation 13, the little horn, and end-time prophecy?

In this Bible study, we examine Scripture and history to explore the prophetic characteristics of Daniel’s “little horn,” the beast of Revelation 13, the rise of the papacy, and the historic Protestant interpretation of these prophecies. We also look at Bible prophecy, deception, worship, the mark of the beast, and the Three Angels’ Messages of Revelation 14.

Most importantly, this study points beyond fear and speculation to Jesus Christ, the true center of Bible prophecy. Open your Bible, examine the evidence, and decide what Scripture teaches.

Hackers Are Coming for Your Tap Water

A flurry of recent cyberattacks shows a new battleground for which local authorities are ill-prepared.

Our water is under attack.

Last week, the Clayton County Water Authority in Georgia announced it was investigating a cyberattack that disrupted its operations “as utilities nationwide are facing a growing number of cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure.”

The intrusion led to reduced water pressure in some areas, prompting CCWA to issue a boil-water advisory. Service was restored “within hours,” and the boil advisory was lifted after testing showed the water was safe to drink, it said.

Welcome to a relatively new national security cyber battleground. You’ve seen cyberattacks on businesses and the federal government before. But now it looks like malicious actors have turned their attention to the life-sustaining substance that comes out of your tap.

The Pope calls for protection and welcome for migrant and refugee minors: "Every child possesses infinite dignity"

by INFOVATICANA | August 14, 2026

Pope Leo XIV has focused his message for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees on migrant and refugee minors, which the Church will celebrate on September 27 under the theme “Even one of these little ones.” The Pontiff warns of the special vulnerability of children affected by war, poverty, violence, trafficking, exploitation, and forced displacement, and calls for action both in countries of origin, to combat the causes that force them to leave, and in transit and destination countries, where he urges the guarantee of their protection and welcome.

In the message, dated August 11 and published this Friday by the Holy See, Leo XIV insists that “every child, every human being, possesses infinite dignity” and urges Christian communities to integrate migrants and refugees “as full members of the ecclesial family.” The Pope also calls on civil institutions to promote family reunification and avoid traumatic separations, and maintains that the debate must shift from “the mere management of migratory flows” to the protection of human rights. Among the fundamental rights of minors, he explicitly mentions “life, education, and a standard of living that allows them to grow and develop fully.”

Below is the full message of Leo XIV:

Dear brothers and sisters:

Year after year, the World Day of Migrants and Refugees invites us to focus our attention on different aspects of the complex migratory phenomenon. In this 112th World Day, the theme “Even one of these little ones” calls us to pay attention to minors directly affected by the experience of migration and flight, to concern for them, and to the Lord’s promise that whoever “welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me” (Mk 9:37).

Adventist Pastor Detained by ICE at Houston Airport

12August2026

HOUSTON, TX — A Houston-area Seventh-day Adventist pastor was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while traveling with his wife to New York for a few days of vacation, according to reporting by Aidari Riera for Telemundo Houston.

Pastor Luis Morales, a father of two daughters and pastor of four Adventist congregations in the Houston area, was detained at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on August 7, according to his wife, Karina Morales.

The couple had just entered the airport when, according to Karina, two ICE agents approached them and called Morales by name.

“We have taken maybe six steps; it was really a short distance when some people spoke to us… ‘Mr. Luis,’ when they referred to my husband by name, we stopped right there. Turns out, they were two ICE agents. First thing one of the officials did was show us his ICE badge,” Karina said (translated from Spanish).

The encounter happened quickly. Karina said she handed her husband’s blood pressure medication to one of the officers and has not seen him since.

“It was so fast that, when we arrived, I told my daughter, ‘My love, we’re here. We have arrived at the airport.’ And the second message I sent to my daughter was to tell her, ‘Daddy just got arrested,’” she said.

Iran looks to ramp up economic alliance with BRICS nations as war with U.S. drags on

Published Thu, Aug 13 2026  8:48 AM EDT

Key Points

  • Iran is set to join the BRICS New Development Bank, the country’s central bank chief said Thursday.
  • Iran would have to move through the NDB’s accession process before it can become an official member country.
  • The war with the U.S. and Israel has further ramped up the pressure on the Iranian economy, with inflation surging, growth plummeting and its currency in freefall.

Iran is set to join the BRICS New Development Bank, the country’s central bank chief said Thursday, as Tehran seeks to shore up its economic alliances almost six months into its war with the U.S. and Israel.

The BRICS alliance was set up in 2006 by founding members Brazil, Russia, India and China, with South Africa joining in 2010.

It has since expanded to include Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Indonesia, with various other nations — including Belarus, Cuba and Nigeria — joining as partner countries.

Iranian state media reported Thursday that Abdolnasser Hemmati, governor of the Central Bank of Iran, had announced Iran would soon become a member of the BRICS Bank. Hemmati is currently in India ahead of next month’s BRICS Summit, according to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency.

“We are seeking to establish bilateral and trilateral monetary cooperation with member states,” Hemmati said, per Tasnim’s report.

The NDB was established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa to help mobilize resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in emerging markets and developing countries.

A spokesperson for the NDB told CNBC the bank cannot confirm information regarding Iran’s membership.

Pope Leo hat giveaway turns White Sox game into the church of baseball

CHICAGO (RNS) — After three terrible years, the White Sox are in the midst of a revival — with good young players and perhaps a little divine intervention. The team's best-known fan is Pope Leo XIV.

CHICAGO (RNS) — On a hot August night on the South Side of Chicago, Rate Field, home of the White Sox, turned into a church of baseball, filled to capacity with true believers who sang, passed the peace, cheered on a celebrity nun and, of course, wore their pope hats.

Those hats, emblazoned with the Sox logo, were given to every fan who entered the park on Tuesday (Aug. 11). It was, according to team officials, the biggest promotional giveaway in White Sox history, with more than 40,000 pope hats given away. The night was a testimony to the resurgent White Sox, who appear to be playoff-bound after three years of losing 100 games a season, as well as to the appeal of Pope Leo XIV, a longtime fan of the team and Chicago native.

“It doesn’t matter your religion or your denomination,” said Brooks Boyer, chief revenue and marketing officer for the White Sox. “Everyone respects the pope. For us, it’s obviously fun that he is a White Sox fan.”

As soon as the gate opened, the park was flooded with fans, young and old, some with jerseys with the pope’s name on the back, many already wearing their pope hats. They stood in line for hot dogs or beers, where some greeted Sister Mary Jo Sobieck of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield, Illinois, who was grabbing a hot dog before throwing out the first pitch.

Jaime Garcia and his wife were decked out in Sox garb and their new pope hats. Garcia, who is from the Back of the Yards neighborhood on Chicago’s southwest side, grew up both Catholic and a Sox fan. He got off work early to get to the game.

Iran’s streets are filled, but not just with mourners. Beneath the surface of state-controlled narratives, a quiet revolution is brewing. Official statistics claim overwhelming religious devotion, yet independent surveys reveal a shocking disconnect. Why are young Iranians, especially women, openly defying laws like the hijab, challenging decades of enforced faith? This video uncovers the hidden struggle within the Islamic Republic, where the deepest threat isn't from abroad, but from a generation that has stopped believing in the very system built to rule them.
