In May 2014, Thailand’s royal army staged a coup and seized control of the country. Declaring a state of emergency, the ruling Junta began to crack down on civil liberties and silence dissent. A series of cyber laws have since been proposed that would increase the state’s power to control and monitor the internet. In response, activists have declared a cyber war on the Thai Junta, attacking government websites and urging tourists to boycott Thailand.

VICE News meets the hackers determined to cyber-bully the government into submission.

Leaders of the World, Unite! - Inside the World Economic Forum

Every year since 1971 the world's elite have gathered in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum's annual meeting. What started as a small conference about management has ballooned into a famously exclusive gathering of business people, academics, and government officials.

The stated goals of the non-profit World Economic Forum are noble: the conference is organized around the principle that business leaders should work with leaders of government to address the world's problems.

But for many, the problem with Davos is rooted in exactly that premise. Critics point out that it’s big corporations, and their wealthy CEOs, that have lobbied for years against higher taxation of corporate profits and better regulation. While some of the world's wealthiest have become advocates against the policies that some say let them accumulate their billions, critics allege that many are in Davos to simply pay lip service to solving issues like growing inequality or climate change.

VICE News traveled to Switzerland to try and understand what really happens in Davos.

As the conflict between pro-Russia rebels and the Ukrainian military intensifies, civilians continue to suffer across eastern Ukraine. Amid the fighting, VICE News correspondent Simon Ostrovsky visited the cities of Mariupol, Komsomolsk, and Novoazovsk to gauge the situation on the ground. In Mariupol, residents are protesting against pro-Russia militias, while in Komsomolsk, citizens reported they were robbed by the Ukrainian National Guard, and are now waiting with open arms for pro-Russia forces to infiltrate. And in Novoazovsk, an abandoned armored personnel carrier and destroyed column led us to a string of charred bodies — with few answers as to what transpired.

The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced their intention to reestablish the caliphate and declared their leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph.

Flush with cash and US weapons seized during recent advances in Iraq, the Islamic State’s expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken over new areas in northern Iraq, encroaching on Kurdish territory and sending Christians and other minorities fleeing as reports of massacres emerged.

Elsewhere in territory it has held for some time, the Islamic State has gone about consolidating power and setting up a government dictated by Sharia law. While the world may not recognize the Islamic State, in the Syrian city of Raqqa, the group is already in the process of building a functioning regime.

VICE News reporter Medyan Dairieh spent three weeks embedded with the Islamic State, gaining unprecedented access to the group in Iraq and Syria as the first and only journalist to document its inner workings. In part one, Dairieh heads to the frontline in Raqqa, where Islamic State fighters are laying siege to the Syrian Army’s division 17 base.
