Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi of Illinois held an election night party that featured a cash bar charging nearly $13 for water and soda and over $20 for wine.

The campaign of Krishnamoorthi, who lost the Democratic Illinois Senate primary Tuesday, hosted the celebration at The Westin Michigan Avenue Chicago, according to a photo shared by Chicago Tribune investigative reporter Gregory Royal Pratt. The reporter, who stated in an X post that he was in attendance at the party, enclosed a picture of its cash bar’s pricey drinks menu —which listed water and soda at $12.85 a drink, domestic beer at $15.34, premium beer at $18.03, and wine or spirits at $21.87.

“In case you’re wondering, the senate candidate has spent more than $20 million on succeeding [Democratic Illinois Sen.] Dick Durbin but the campaign party is cash bar,” Pratt wrote in his post.

Federal Election Commission (FEC) records list the total receipts of Krishnamoorthi’s failed campaign as over $30 million, its total disbursements at about $24 million, and its cash on hand at nearly $7 million, for coverage ending Feb. 25. Meanwhile, Democratic Illinois Lt. Gov. Stratton’s victorious campaign listed only $4 million in total receipts, just under $3 million in disbursements, and more than $1 million in cash on hand, for the same coverage period.

ADRA Joins Faith Leaders in Prayer Vigil Against Foreign Aid Cuts

On March 12, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) joined dozens of faith-based nonprofits for a prayer vigil in Washington, D.C., speaking out against the current U.S. administration’s sweeping foreign aid cuts. Bread for the World and the Accord Network organized the event at the Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church. The vigil drew prominent organizations that aid vulnerable communities worldwide.

James Standish, ADRA’s Government Relations Advisor, represented the organization and was one of several speakers at the vigil. Standish affirmed ADRA’s commitment to serving, saying:

At ADRA, we believe that helping the most vulnerable is a core tenet of Christian compassion. While USAID and government funding have played a key role in our work, we now turn to the Adventist Church community and individual donors to help fill the gap created by recent funding cuts. Through prayer, support, and generosity, we can continue providing life-saving assistance to those who need it most, especially in times of crisis.

Slashed funding from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has hindered ADRA’s mission. As Spectrum recently reported, the agency received $62,617,898 from USAID to fund humanitarian programs worldwide in 2023. The amount represents approximately 64 percent of ADRA’s total revenue of $96,362,929 for that year.

Along with ADRA, World Relief, Catholic Relief Services, Compassion International, and other faith-based aid groups asked Congress to reinstate crucial international programs, condemning the funding cuts on moral and humanitarian grounds, and citing the fallout that has already begun.

Once a respected cardiothoracic surgeon at Loma Linda University Medical Center, he’s now better known for promoting a lectin-free diet and marketing a range of supplements. Given his association with Loma Linda—a medical institution affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church—many have asked whether Dr. Gundry himself is a Seventh-day Adventist.

This question speaks not just to religious affiliation, but to how personal philosophy can intersect with medical practice and public health messaging.

Loma Linda and Its Religious Foundation

Loma Linda University is owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Its health system is heavily influenced by Adventist principles, particularly in regard to diet, lifestyle, and holistic wellness. Vegetarianism, avoidance of caffeine and alcohol, and emphasis on preventive care are central to its health doctrine.

Dr. Gundry held a high-ranking position within this institution for many years. His time there gave him exposure to long-standing Adventist health philosophies, including the promotion of plant-based eating for chronic disease prevention. Loma Linda itself is located in one of the world’s five “Blue Zones,” known for longevity and low rates of age-related disease—a designation frequently credited to the Adventist lifestyle.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church’s “global humanitarian arm”, the Silver Spring, Md., Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA), plans to distribute more than $10 million, nearly 38 percent of it as cash and cash vouchers and the rest as food, shelter, and hygiene needs in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Argentina, and Peru.

ADRA received significant funding from USAID and the State Department from 2021-2023, nearly $51 million in 2021, $32 million in 2022, and more than $9 million in 2023 and two unspecified grants so far for 2024, according to USAspending. It’s unclear how much of that is earmarked for U.S.-bound immigrants in Latin America, but clearly some of it will be in 2024. Brazil and Honduras were among the top countries where ADRA spent money.

Organizations associated with the Catholic Church, collectively, move among the largest volumes of cash and other aid into the hands of U.S.-bound foreign nationals, more than $26 million. Three Jesuit-associated groups are to move some $5.3 million into immigrant hands, while the Catholic Commission for Social Justice sends out nearly $2 million.

Vice President JD Vance fired back at the US Conference of Catholic Bishops over its denunciation of the Trump administration rule change allowing ICE raids in churches and schools.

Last week, the religious group slammed the move for “turning places of care, healing, and solace into places of fear and uncertainty for those in need” and warned that it endangers “the trust between pastors” and “the people they serve.”

“As a practicing Catholic, I was actually heartbroken by that statement,” Vance, 40, told CBS News’ “Face the Nation” in an interview that aired Sunday.

General Conference Corporation Sues Pathfinder Shirts LLC

The General Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists has sued a small Florida-based company, Pathfinder Shirts, LLC, over what the General Conference says is unauthorized use of the Adventist Church’s trademarks. The General Conference is not seeking monetary damages but seeks to stop Pathfinder Shirts from selling products emblazoned with church logos.

The company’s co-owners, Michael and Karen Lillard, represented by legal firm Watson LLP, have argued that the lawsuit has unfairly singled them out. They further have asserted that the church has failed to self-police its trademarks to such an extent that the marks have lost trademark significance. They filed a counterclaim alleging damages resulting from being barred from attending Pathfinder events and have sought damages from the General Conference.

Converts to Adventism

The Lillards, former Presbyterians, converted to the Seventh-day Adventist faith as a result of Bible studies in the 1980s. They became members in 1982 and got involved in church-related programs, including Pathfinders. They began making Pathfinder items for the club their children attended and soon other churches asked, “Can you do this for us, too?”

They owned a clothing store, Tropic Tees, and sold Pathfinders items on the side, but interest in their Pathfinders-related clothing grew. The Florida Conference of Seventh-day Adventists recommended the Lillards’ services to fledgling Pathfinders clubs and extended them invitations to attend Pathfinders camporees.

The business grew in the late 1980s to include other ministries of the local conference—women’s and men’s ministries, prison ministries, and more. They became Florida Conference’s go-to supplier for clothing and Pathfinder honors and patches. All the while, the Lillards held numerous positions in their local congregation: deacons and elders, Sabbath School teachers, church treasurer, Pathfinders staff, Adventurers directors, music ministry directors, and more. They became members of Adventist Layman’s Services and Industries (ASI), and Karen served on the Florida Conference Executive Committee and the Florida Pathfinders Counsel. In addition to integration with the Florida Conference, Michael Lillard says they received encouragement from Norman Middag, who in the 80s and 90s was youth director for the Florida Conference and went on to start AdventSource.

By the early 90s, the Lillards sold church-related paraphernalia exclusively. They owned Manna Tees Witness Wear, a business with the tagline “Man does not live by bread alone but by every shirt printed with the word of God.” It was literally true; the shirt printing business was and remains their livelihood. They attended and operated vendor booths at General Conference Sessions. They attended North American Division Youth Ministries events and division-wide camporees. Wherever they went, they networked with Pathfinder clubs in needs of pins, patches, clothing, and other items. And everywhere they went, there were many other vendors selling Pathfinder items, they observed.

The Internet provided a platform for expanding their business and selling to Pathfinder clubs outside of North America. They started selling items online through the Pathfindershirts.com website. The Inter-American Division with its growing Adventist membership became a significant portion of the Lillard’s business.

Google enlisted members of the US congress, whose election campaigns it had funded, to pressure the European Union to drop a €6bn antitrust case which threatens to decimate the US tech firm’s business in Europe.

The coordinated effort by senators and members of the House of Representatives, as well as by a congressional committee, formed part of a sophisticated, multimillion-pound lobbying drive in Brussels, which Google has significantly ramped up as it fends off challenges to its dominance in Europe.

An investigation by the Guardian into Google’s multifaceted lobbying campaign in Europe has uncovered fresh details of its activities and methods. Based on documents obtained under a freedom of information request and a series of interviews with EU officials, MEPs and Brussels lobbyists, the investigation has also found:

• Google’s co-founder and CEO Larry Page met the then European commission chief privately in California in spring 2014 and raised the antitrust case despite being warned by EU officials that it would be inappropriate to do so.

• Officials and lawmakers in Brussels say they have witnessed a significant expansion of Google lobbying efforts over the past 18 months as the company faces increased scrutiny of its business activities in Europe.


• Google has employed several former EU officials as in-house lobbyists, and has funded European thinktanks and university research favourable to its position as part of its broader campaign.

Capitol Hill’s aggressive intervention in Brussels came as the European parliament prepared to vote through a resolution in November 2014 that called on EU policymakers to consider breaking up Google’s online business into separate companies.

Republican and Democratic senators and congressmen, many of whom have received significant campaign donations from Google totalling hundreds of thousands of dollars, leaned on parliament in a series of similar – and in some cases identical – letters sent to key MEPs.

Why I refuse to join any group pages on facebook

Today I followed a link on facebook and it lead me to one of those group pages...

I THOUGH IT WAS JUST AN ADVERTISEMENT

...

it was supposed to be about how certain (from a religious organization) people are preparing for the future, spiritually, economically, etc.

Here's what I think about them:

I resent that entities are allowed to have facebook pages.

'They' solicit likes to boost their ratings and recruit friends to create interest in their product, service or idea; When in fact they are only trying to make a buck.

My main concern is that they are able to see all your personal stuff; Yet, you can only see that phony bologna wall where they spew their propaganda. Now, that isn't dealing on common ground, is it? That's not fair?

So, I choose not to get involved in any of those devious facebook pages. If you're gonna socialize, come correct!

I'm not only a consumer or a potential customer for yous to run you 'script' on me?

My opinion is: NO face = NO Friend.

How about the people that use nicknames for their facebook pages instead of their given names ?

(WASHINGTON) — Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor says she received nearly $1.2 million to write a memoir of her rise from a South Bronx housing project to the nation's highest court.

Sotomayor reported the payment for the as-yet untitled book from Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group in an annual report of personal finances, released Friday for the justice and her eight colleagues. Knopf revealed last July that Sotomayor had agreed to write the memoir, but the size of the advance had not been public.

The book will come out simultaneously in English and in Spanish, but no release date has been set. Sotomayor is the court's first Hispanic justice. Her parents moved from Puerto Rico to New York after World War II.

Justice Clarence Thomas also received more than $1 million in advance of the publication of his book, "My Grandfather's Son," in 2007.

Thomas reported that his wife, Virginia, received salary and benefits from two conservative advocacy groups she created, Liberty Central and Liberty Consulting. The amounts were not disclosed; they are not required.

Two justices reported receiving royalties for books they published in recent years. Justice Stephen Breyer traveled the country to promote his new book "Making Our Democracy Work." He received nearly $60,000 in royalties.

Justice Antonin Scalia took in $38,000 for "Making Your Case," the book about legal advocacy that he co-wrote with Bryan Garner.

Breyer also reported selling his shares of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., valued at $15,000 to $50,000. The stock sale allowed Breyer to take part in the court's consideration of Wal-Mart's effort to end a massive sex discrimination lawsuit. The court is expected to decide that case by the end of June.
