Officials reported no injuries Saturday among spectators at the airfield. Details on the pilot's condition were unavailable.

6 dead in W. Va. coal mine blast

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Six miners were killed and at least 21 are unaccounted for Monday in an explosion at an underground coal mine, the state mining director said.
Ron Wooten said the blast was reported around 3 p.m. at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston. The company did not provide details on the extent of the damage. A Boone County ambulance dispatcher also said he has the same number of fatalities and missing miners.
The mine is operated by subsidiary Performance Coal Co.
We're uncertain as to what happened but we are working diligently on rescue efforts and we are in contact with all of the appropriate agencies," Massey CEO Don Blankenship told WCHS TV.
Mine emergency crews from the State Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training were on the scene, along with a family liaison, according to an agency statement.
Gov. Joe Manchin was out of town, but working to get back, according to his office. Chief of Staff Jim Spears was headed to the mine.
Other deaths at mine
At least three fatalities have happened at the mine in the past dozen years.
In 1998, a worker was killed when a support beam collapsed, dumping bags of cement mix and other materials onto the man, according to a report from the federal Mine Safety & Health Administration. Federal investigators blamed poor welding and construction.
In 2001, another worker at the mine died after a portion of roof fell in on him, and an electrician died after being electrocuted while repairing a shuttle car there in 2003.
The mine produced 1.2 million tons of coal in 2009, according to the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Massey Energy is a publicly traded company based in Richmond, Va., that has 2.2 billion tons of coal reserves in southern West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, southwest Virginia and Tennessee, according to the company's Web site.
In 2006, 12 miners died in a methane explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia. Six were killed in the collapse of the Crandall Canyon mine in Utah in 2007.
Last year, the number of miners killed on the job in the U.S. fell for a second straight year to 34, the fewest since officials began keeping records nearly a century ago. That was down from the previous low of 52 in 2008.
U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration documents show 18 of the deaths occurred in coal mines, down from 29 in 2008; and 16 were in gold, copper and other types of mines, down from 22 in 2008. Most involved aboveground truck accidents on mine property, though some resulted from rock falls and being struck by machinery.

UPS Building Hit By Plane in Roanoke, Virginia

ROANOKE, Virginia- A small private plane has crashed into a UPS building near the Roanoke Regional Airport in Virginia, reports said.
Reports said the small private plane crashed around 12.50pm local time March 30, 2010.
One on board the Piper PA 46 private plane that crashed into the UPS Building in Roanoke died at the scene, a second person was pulled from the wreckage. Some media reports said the second person had also died.
Live video from a local TV news outlet showed thick black smoke rising from an area near the airport.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Bob Carpentieri says the plane struck the freight terminal just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Carpentieri did not know the condition of the people inside the plane, but said at least two people were transported to the hospital.
It was not immediately clear if the two injured were in the plane or on the ground.
Airport spokeswoman Sherry Wallace told The Roanoke Times that the pilot reported trouble to air traffic controllers shortly before the crash.

Hundreds protest Fairfax imam giving prayer in Va. House tomorrow
Hundreds of people are urging House of Delegates leaders to revoke an invitation to a Falls Church imam to give the prayer tomorrow, accusing him of condoning violence and defending the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Johari 'Abdul-Malik demonstrates regularly his contempt for the rule of law and his support for terrorist acts against America,'' writes James Lafferty, chairman of the Virginia Anti-Shariah Task Force. "Speaking before the General Assembly is an honor which should be reserved for those who have done something worth honoring."
Del. Adam Ebbin (D-Alexandria) said he asked Abdul-Malik of the Dar Al Hijrah Islamic Center to give the opening prayer in the House tomorrow because many of his constituents attend the center. "He's a great guy,'' Ebbin said.
Ebbin sent a letter to his 99 colleagues this morning defending his choice of Abdul-Malik, and saying any concerns about him were driven by "false rumors propagated on the Internet."
Many of the e-mails have asked Speaker William J. Howell to revoke Abdul-Malik's invitation, but Howell's chief of staff, G. Paul Nardo, said the House's practice is generally to allow delegates to invite religious leaders of differing faiths if they choose.
Abdul-Malik would be the first imam to deliver the opening prayer in the House during this year's legislative session, although others have done so in the past.

Deaths reported in Virginia shooting

APPOMATTOX, Va., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- A suspect has been surrounded after a shooting incident in Appomattox County that left multiple fatalities, Virginia State Police said.
Media General News Service reported that while State Police had confirmed there were fatalities, they were not releasing identities or the exact number killed.
State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said officers had set up a perimeter around a wooded area where the suspect was "contained" but not in custody. As of 7 p.m. EST, about 100 officers had converged on the targeted area.
A State Police helicopter was forced to the ground when it began to leak fuel after being hit by gunfire four times, Molnar said. No law enforcement officers were reported hurt.
Police were first alerted to the incident about noon when dispatchers received a call about a man lying in Snapps Mill Road in need off medical help. An officer who arrived at the scene heard shots being fired and the helicopter was fired on about 1:30 p.m.
Cornerstone Christian Academy, located in the vicinity, was locked down as a precaution and students were released to their parents shortly after 3 p.m.
The (Lynchburg, Va.) News & Advance reported officers were brought in from sheriff's offices in Appomattox, Prince Edward, Campbell and Charlotte counties, as well as officers from the Farmville Police Department and the Virginia State Police, including tactical and K-9 units.
The newspaper said officers also had surrounded a small, white farmhouse on a narrow, two-lane road.

More than 85,000 in Va. and W.Va. still without power

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- More than 85,000 customers in West Virginia and Virginia remain without power four days after a massive winter storm blew across the region.
Appalachian Power reported 50,330 outages in West Virginia and 26,580 outages in Virginia on Wednesday morning.
In addition, Allegheny Energy reported 8,425 customers in West Virginia were still without power Wednesday morning.
The weekend storm dumped more than a foot of snow across the two states, with some areas seeing around 2 feet.
The utilities say it may be until the weekend before power is restored everywhere, with service to remote areas taking the longest. .

Senator's attendance at 59 percent for session, the lowest of any member

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- As members of the U.S. Senate race against the clock to pass historic health care legislation in time for Christmas, Sen. Robert Byrd has been there to cast his critical vote on the controversial issue.
Byrd's staff members say the 92-year-old senator plans to see the measure through until the bitter end.
A final vote on the Senate version of the health care bill is scheduled to take place as early as Thursday morning.
Democrats are striving to make sure every single member of their party participates in the health care votes. The 40 Republicans are unified in their opposition to the health care bill, and Democrats have had trouble corralling all 60 votes needed to fend off procedural delays.
But throughout this first year of the current congressional session, Byrd's participation on the Senate floor has been noticeably sparse as compared to years past.
Statistics provided by a washingtonpost.com database show Byrd has cast a total of 229 votes this year and missed 159. His attendance currently stands at 59 percent for the session, the lowest among current Senate members.
"Obviously it's of concern," said political analyst Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia Center for Politics.
"You only have two senators, and you want them there for as many votes as possible. But it's also true that the party leadership is bringing Byrd in for the critical votes, the votes where he makes a difference."
Byrd's office declined to comment on whether Democratic Party leaders are indicating when they need for the senator to weigh in.
During the month of December, Byrd has cast 15 votes and missed 20. He voted along party lines in each of those 15 instances, and the vast majority of the decisions were close contests.
In recent years Byrd has logged a strong attendance record in the Senate. Between 2007 and 2009, he missed a total of 65 votes, showing up more than 90 percent of the time. Between 2005 and 2007, he missed just 17 votes, with an attendance record of 97.4 percent.
Sabato says most senators try to maintain voting attendance records above 90 percent.
"But I'm guessing if a poll were taken, most West Virginians would still take Byrd at 59 percent rather than a freshman senator at 90 percent," he said. "Robert Byrd has been number one in bringing home the bacon."
It's no secret that Byrd, the longest-serving member of either house of Congress in the nation's history, has struggled with illness and injuries over the past year. He was hospitalized in the late spring and summer due to a string of infections that kept him out of commission for several months.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller currently has the second lowest voting attendance record at 85 percent, according to washingtonpost.com. Rockefeller also struggled with injuries earlier this year and underwent knee surgery in April.
Byrd communications director Jesse Jacobs reported earlier this week that the senator is in "fine" health and planning to spend the impending holidays with his family and his dog, Trouble, once the health care votes are finished.
Sabato says it's clear that as he ages, Byrd isn't enjoying the same level of influence he once held among his colleagues.
"He clearly has a diminished role simply because he doesn't have the energy level to be there all the time, and a lot of the Senate's work is done behind the scenes," said Sabato. "I'm sure they all wish, as he does, that he were 30 years younger, but he's not."
However, Sabato believes most West Virginians are willing to put up with Byrd's spotty attendance and doesn't expect to see the nonagenarian step down from his post anytime soon.
"He has mental faculties sufficient to continue. That's obvious when you watch him on the floor. If his mental faculties were dim, that would be a different story."

It's no secret that Byrd, the longest-serving member of either house of Congress in the nation's history, has struggled with illness and injuries over the past year. He was hospitalized in the late spring and summer due to a string of infections that kept him out of commission for several months.
In September, the senator needed time to recuperate after a fall at his home, again causing him to miss dozens of votes during the healing process.
Sen. Jay Rockefeller currently has the second lowest voting attendance record at 85 percent, according to washingtonpost.com. Rockefeller also struggled with injuries earlier this year and underwent knee surgery in April.
Byrd communications director Jesse Jacobs reported earlier this week that the senator is in "fine" health and planning to spend the impending holidays with his family and his dog, Trouble, once the health care votes are finished.
Sabato says it's clear that as he ages, Byrd isn't enjoying the same level of influence he once held among his colleagues.
"He clearly has a diminished role simply because he doesn't have the energy level to be there all the time, and a lot of the Senate's work is done behind the scenes," said Sabato. "I'm sure they all wish, as he does, that he were 30 years younger, but he's not."
However, Sabato believes most West Virginians are willing to put up with Byrd's spotty attendance and doesn't expect to see the nonagenarian step down from his post anytime soon.
"He has mental faculties sufficient to continue. That's obvious when you watch him on the floor. If his mental faculties were dim, that would be a different story."
