Two others were collateral deaths: second wife Rosemary LaBianca & convicted teenage burglar Steven Parent of El Monte.

Evelle J. Younger, who later served as California’s Attorney General from 1971 to 1979, was the Los Angeles County District Attorney during the 1969–1970 trial of Charles Manson and his followers for the Tate–LaBianca murders. As DA, he oversaw the prosecution of several defendants, including Susan Atkins, and was central to the case’s legal proceedings.

DA Evelle Younger’s Role in the Manson Trial:

In March 1971, Younger was called to the stand by the defense to clarify details of a rumored “deal” between Susan Atkins and the DA’s office. According to testimony, Younger recalled agreeing not to seek the death penalty for Atkins if she testified truthfully before the grand jury. He said the DA’s office would decide on her truthfulness, and her attorneys would have to abide by that decision.

When asked why he later allowed the death penalty to be sought, Younger claimed he was told at some point that Atkins was not telling the truth, but he could not recall when, where, or from whom he received that information. He admitted he had not read the grand jury transcript, listened to her statements, or reviewed the questions and answers before the trial.

Controversy re: suborned perjury “Confession”:

Defense attorneys also challenged Younger’s role in the publication of what became known as Atkins’ “confession” in the Los Angeles Times and in a subsequent book, The Killing of Sharon Tate, published by a Times subsidiary. Younger testified he had not read the newspaper story, had not seen the book, and did not contact Atkins’ attorneys after hearing of the publication. He said the story “neither shocked nor surprised me” and doubted he would have made inquiries into its source.

Later Legal Disputes:

In 1974, Younger was dismissed as a defendant in a $24 million libel suit filed by two Manson trial attorneys, Irving Kanarek and Paul Fitzgerald. The suit alleged defamation over a Times reporter’s claim that certain trial lawyers had unlawfully provided transcripts to the reporter. Judge Jerry Pacht ruled Younger immune from conspiracy claims, noting he had no duty to publish the results of his office’s investigation into the transcript transfer.

Historical Legacy of Mendacity:

Evelle Younger’s testimony in the Manson trial highlighted tensions between prosecutorial discretion and press coverage and underscored the murky details of the case.
