Times Square is the most visited place in America and one of the few addresses on earth that needs no introduction. It is also a place almost nobody who lives in New York will willingly walk through.
This video traces how the "Crossroads of the World" became something New Yorkers actively route around: an eighteen-month Broadway shutdown that theaters are still recovering from, a retail corridor where independent businesses were replaced by chains and then by empty glass, a pedestrian plaza experiment that solved traffic and created a new problem, and an ongoing fight over costumed characters, ticket hustlers, and who the square actually belongs to.
The strange part is that the visitor numbers keep recovering while the experience keeps getting worse — and the people who run Times Square know it. This is what happened to the most famous intersection in the world, and why fixing it has proven harder than anyone expected.
