Police in Jackson, Mississippi, have arrested a man in the case of Tasia Fortune, the 29-year-old Black woman found hanging from a tree outside an abandoned house last month, following the state medical examiner ruling her death a homicide.

Jarques Ratliff, 51, has been charged with murder in connection with Fortune’s death, police said Friday. CNN is working to determine if he has legal representation. Ratliff will have his first court appearance Monday, police said.

“Last night, the medical examiner’s office officially classified Miss Fortune’s death as a homicide. With that determination, our investigators moved quickly,” Chief RaShall Brackney said at a Friday news conference.

Brackney told CNN on Saturday no one else had been arrested overnight, but she expects “more arrests to come.”

Adventist Pastor Detained by ICE at Houston Airport

HOUSTON, TX — A Houston-area Seventh-day Adventist pastor was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents while traveling with his wife to New York for a few days of vacation, according to reporting by Aidari Riera for Telemundo Houston.

Pastor Luis Morales, a father of two daughters and pastor of four Adventist congregations in the Houston area, was detained at George Bush Intercontinental Airport on August 7, according to his wife, Karina Morales.

The couple had just entered the airport when, according to Karina, two ICE agents approached them and called Morales by name.

“We have taken maybe six steps; it was really a short distance when some people spoke to us… ‘Mr. Luis,’ when they referred to my husband by name, we stopped right there. Turns out, they were two ICE agents. First thing one of the officials did was show us his ICE badge,” Karina said (translated from Spanish).

The encounter happened quickly. Karina said she handed her husband’s blood pressure medication to one of the officers and has not seen him since.

“It was so fast that, when we arrived, I told my daughter, ‘My love, we’re here. We have arrived at the airport.’ And the second message I sent to my daughter was to tell her, ‘Daddy just got arrested,’” she said.

An HIV-positive Florida pastor is accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy he met on a dating app, after allegedly going online to target children. The case has left residents shocked and horrified.

Timothy Chaneyfield, 42, the pastor at St. James United American Free Will Baptist Church in Winter Haven, is facing several charges and was transferred to the Polk County Jail, Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said during a press conference Tuesday. He is being held on a bond of over $350,000.

Chaneyfield faces the following charges: three counts of lewd battery of a minor, three counts of interfering with custody of a minor, one count of unlawful use of a two-way communication device, three counts of traveling to meet a minor, four counts of an HIV-infected person having sex without informing a partner, one count of possession of cannabis, and five counts of possession of drug paraphernalia.

Judd said investigators spoke with members of the St. James church, who were “shocked” and said, “they had absolutely no idea their pastor was like that.” The investigation revealed that Chaneyfield had gone online searching for children and met the 14-year-old boy through a dating app.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), the investigation began on July 28 after a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. The tip came from Instagram, where Chaneyfield and the victim continued chatting after meeting on the dating app.

“And then Timothy Chaneyfield picked him up in front of his neighborhood on three different occasions,” Judd said. “And on those three different occasions, he wasn't preaching, but he was messing around.”

Investigators said Chaneyfield picked up the victim on three consecutive days at the entrance to his subdivision, drove him to his house in Winter Haven and sexually abused him.

The pastor allegedly told the victim during a phone call that he wanted to continue having sex with him. He also told the boy he had to travel to Baltimore; investigators later learned he was presiding over a funeral there.

A U.S. Air Force major was arrested Wednesday for protesting alone on House steps as he called for the immediate impeachment and removal of President Donald Trump.

Maj. Jason Watson was arrested by Capitol Police officers at approximately 1:15 p.m. local time for demonstrating on the House steps without a sitting member of Congress, Capitol Police told Military Times. Watson, an active-duty service member with a military career dating over 20 years, walked halfway up the steps of the House to its chained railing to hold a sign that read “Impeach Convict Remove.”

Watson was first escorted to the bottom of the steps by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, who then left the area, causing the officers to arrest Watson under 22-1307 Crowding, Obstructing and Incommoding.

“When the Member of Congress left the area, our officers gave the man lawful orders to stop the illegal demonstration, or he would be arrested,” the spokesperson said. “The man refused our lawful orders.”

The spokesperson highlighted that there are other areas on the Capitol where demonstrating is allowed.

Watson stoically stood wearing his uniform on the steps for roughly one minute before officers first approached him. Another minute later, he was again approached by an officer, who spoke to him briefly and was nodded at by Watson, as shown in video footage posted by Removal Coalition founder Jessica Denson, who organized the demonstration.

Over a minute later, Watson was approached for a third time. But this time, he quietly and peacefully placed his sign down and was arrested by Capitol Police before being escorted off the steps by multiple officers as protesters chants of “Who do you serve? Who do you protect?” rang clear.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - A prominent leader for advocacy group Migrant Justice has pleaded not guilty to federal human smuggling charges after his arrest early Thursday.

A large crowd of supporters gathered outside the courthouse during Thursday afternoon’s hearing for Jose Ignacio De La Cruz De La Rosa, 30, also known as Nacho, who was arrested on Thursday morning on his way to work at a construction site.

It comes after he was detained last summer near the border in Richford with his stepdaughter. Federal authorities said De La Rosa allegedly helped people cross the border and helped settle them in the United States.

Court records show De La Rosa allegedly participated in a multiyear conspiracy to bring illegal immigrants into the U.S. He’s also accused of producing fraudulent identity documents, including driver’s privilege cards, a form of state ID available to migrants. Court records indicate he got $500 for every card he provided. He’s also accused of taking learner’s privilege driver tests for other people.

To the extent that Emir Balat was known at all in the northern suburbs of Philadelphia, it was as a budding entrepreneur.

When he was only 13, he programmed bots to buy pricey sneakers the moment they dropped. His father would drive him to the parking lot of a Wawa convenience store, where he would sell them to a sneaker dealer, sometimes making more than $200 a pair. He told people he was investing in crypto.

Last fall, Mr. Balat started attending high school remotely and began selling contractor supplies online — flooring, sinks and vanities, mini-splits and power tools. Customers gave him rave reviews.

But by mid-February, Mr. Balat suddenly stopped listing items for sale. Soon, prosecutors say, he started planning something darker. On a chilly afternoon in early March, security cameras at a fireworks store a couple of miles from his home captured him pulling into the parking lot in a black Honda with New Jersey plates. He bought 20 feet of slow-burning fuse, prosecutors said.

Five days later, the authorities say, Mr. Balat, 18, and another man who lived near him drove a black Honda over the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan. They parked a few blocks from Gracie Mansion, the official residence of New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, where an anti-Muslim protest was getting underway on March 7.

Mr. Balat, the police say, took a jar packed with metal and a powerful explosive, lit the fuse and threw the device at protesters. He and the other man, Ibrahim Nikk Kayumi, 19, were immediately arrested. The bomb never exploded, and no one was injured.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A woman who led an anti-immigration enforcement protest that disrupted a service at a Minnesota church has been arrested, Attorney General Pam Bondi said Thursday.

Bondi announced the arrest of Nekima Levy Armstrong in a post on X days after protesters during Sunday service entered the Cities Church in St. Paul, where a local official with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement serves as a pastor.

The Justice Department quickly opened a civil rights investigation after the group interrupted services by chanting “ICE out” and “Justice for Renee Good,” referring to the 37-year-old mother of three who was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis earlier this month. Bondi

“Listen loud and clear: WE DO NOT TOLERATE ATTACKS ON PLACES OF WORSHIP,” the attorney general wrote on X.

Levy Armstrong, a civil rights attorney and prominent local activist, had called for the pastor affiliated with ICE to resign, saying his dual role poses a “fundamental moral conflict.”

“You cannot lead a congregation while directing an agency whose actions have cost lives and inflicted fear in our communities,” she said Tuesday. “When officials protect armed agents, repeatedly refuse meaningful investigation into killings like Renée Good’s, and signal they may pursue peaceful protesters and journalists, that is not justice — it is intimidation.”

Prominent leaders of the Southern Baptist Convention have come to the church’s defense, arguing that compassion for migrant families affected by the crackdown cannot justify violating a sacred space during worship.
