The world needs formed, not just informed, believers.

In many churches, Christianity has been reduced, not necessarily to something false or heretical, but to something much smaller than it is.

Even our understanding of the church’s mission—to exalt Christ, edify believers, and evangelize the lost—are understood in ways that confine Christianity. Worship only happens on Sunday mornings. Discipleship is the acquisition of biblical knowledge or the process of becoming more moral. Evangelism is about securing decisions for Christ.

These are all good things but not the whole story. That’s why Christianity is often highly visible inside the church but largely absent from where people spend most of their lives. When faith is separated from work, worship is disconnected from vocation, discipleship unrelated to culture, and salvation irrelevant to the wider world, Christianity has been privatized.

This would have puzzled the earliest Christians. The New Testament authors constantly present Christ as not only the Savior of souls but as the Lord of heaven and earth. The Apostle Paul declared that all things were created through Him and for Him, and that in Him all things hold together. Christ’s reign extends over every square inch of reality.

If that’s true, then worship cannot be confined to a sanctuary. Worship is how we conduct our business, raise our children, care for our neighbors, create art, pursue justice, engage politics, and steward any part of creation. To exalt Christ is to live under His lordship wherever He has placed us. To disciple believers is about more than knowing Bible facts. It is about transformation.

Paul urged believers to not be conformed to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds. That kind of formation reshapes not only what we think about the Bible but how we understand reality itself. It teaches us to see the world through the lens of God’s Kingdom, and to see God’s Kingdom as the reality about the world we live in.

This kind of formation is desperately needed today. After all, we’re all being discipled by something. Something is forming our loves, our habits, and our assumptions. If these things are not being shaped by the Holy Spirit through Scripture, it is being shaped by the surrounding culture. A Christian who understands justification but thinks about sexuality, identity, work, technology, politics, or human flourishing in essentially secular terms has not yet been fully formed. The Church’s task is to cultivate believers whose entire lives bear witness to the reality that Jesus Christ is Lord.

In the same way, evangelism is not a single transaction. Jesus did not command His followers to make converts. He commanded them to make disciples, teaching them to obey everything He had commanded.

In oppossition to God

Several years ago I read, with amazement, deep concern and, heartfelt disappointment, an article in a major magazine entitled Mary’s Role in Salvation History. As a Bible-believing Christian, I felt that the ideas presented were bold attacks on the God of all creation, His Son and our Savior Jesus Christ, and His plan of Salvation for men’s souls. When compared with the Bible, those ideas reveal that they are patently false. The writer reiteriated a fabricated narrative that Mary, the mother of Jesus, is our co-mediator. Unfortunately, many who call themselves Christians are unwittingly, but warmly and increasingly embracing that perverse doctrine.

First, the writer pointed out that one is unable to properly understand the Scripture with a mere 4th or 5th grade education. The Scripture and Salvation history, which it teaches, refutes that notion. Most Bible writers were not at all highly educated. In fact, the Bible is clear that many of them were ordinary men. Some were farmers. Others were peasants. Yet others were herdsmen, shepherds, fishermen, and men of low estate. Their pronouncements on the things of God were not based upon theological exegesis, intellectual philosophy, or institutional training. Their work was based solely on the inspiration of God. The apostle Peter declares: “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of men; but holy men spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost” (2 Peter 1:21). The apostle Paul agrees: “ All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness… that the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works” ( 2 Timothy 3:16,17).

God’s plan of Redemption is understood by the very same means it is given, i.e. through the inspiration of God by the Holy Ghost. Thus we find Jesus admonishing the Jewish leaders, “Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me”(John 5:39). He continues, “If any man will do His will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself” ( John17:7). James, the Lord’s brother, advises us, “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given to him” (James 1:5)

The work of the Holy Spirit is to lead all men, regardless of age, educational background, or social status, to an understanding of God’s love for fallen humanity. Jesus teaches,“Howbeit when He, the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth: for He will not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, that shall He speak: and He will shew you things to come” (John 16L13). No age restrictions here. The very young was attracted to Jesus. When His disciples attempted to prevent them from coming to Him, The Lord rebuked them, “Suffer the little children, and forbid them not to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 19:14). Here’s the polar opposite of having some higher level of education in order to understand the love of God.

Anyone who is concerned about the proper effects of Christianity upon a nation knows the name of William Wilberforce, the power behind the abolition of slavery in the British Empire in the year 1807. Wilberforce was elected to Parliament from the county of Hull in 1780 at the age of 21. He was converted to Christ in 1785 through the witness of his old schoolmaster from Hull, Isaac Milner. Shortly after that, partly through the influence of the converted former slave trader John Newton and partly through others, Wilberforce began his long campaign against slavery.

Wilberforce’s first parliamentary bill was to “discuss” abolition. It was introduced in the House of Commons by his friend, Prime Minister William Pitt, in 1788, and it passed. But when the bill came up for discussion at the next session of Parliament in 1789, it was hotly opposed by the commercial lobby that backed slavery, and the move to limit the abuse was defeated.

In 1791 Wilberforce, now backed by a coalition of like-minded men known as the Clapham Sect, tried again, but again he was defeated. It was the same in 1792. There were times when public opinion ran in Wilberforce’s favor. At other times, as in the eyes of the French Revolution, opinion was against any change at all. After the fall of Robespierre in France in 1796, the mood of the country turned toward abolition, but when the abolition bill reached the House of Commons in that year, it was again defeated.

So also in 1798, 1799, 1800, and 1801.

It was not until February 4, 1807, that the abolition document finally passed the House of Lords, and not until February 22, 1807, that it passed the Commons. Nineteen years had gone by. Men had grown old in the cause. Some had died. Yet when news of the abolition of the slave trade reached Wilberforce late on the evening of February 22, the reformer looked into the face of his old friend and fellow abolitionist, Henry Thorton, and said, “Well, Henry, what shall we abolish next?”
