The German Theologian Bringing Protestants and Catholics Together

Jayson Casper

Evangelicals have critiqued the ecumenism of former World Evangelical Alliance head Thomas Schirrmacher.

Eleven American Pentecostal pastors sat nervously with Pope Francis at the Vatican in June 2016. The meeting, arranged by Thomas Schirrmacher, then chair of the theological commission of the World Evangelical Alliance (WEA), was an opportunity for the guests to ask the pontiff anything they wanted. Two years earlier, Francis had publicly apologized for past Catholic persecution of the charismatic movement.

At the time, the Italian Evangelical Alliance had cautioned against growing ecumenical openness where “insurmountable” doctrinal obstacles exist. The American delegation was similarly opposed to Schirrmacher’s engagement but had agreed to the meeting. No one wanted to ask the first question. Amid the awkwardness, Francis took the initiative.

He asked the delegation to pray for him.

Schirrmacher said what followed was a life-changing experience for the Pentecostals. They prayed for the pope. He prayed for them. By the end, he said, their theological concerns didn’t matter much anymore as they agreed with Schirrmacher that Francis was a genuine believer and had no intention to convert them to Catholicism.

Matters of theology and doctrine have always mattered to Schirrmacher, who turns 66 today. The German theologian has four doctoral degrees and authored more than 100 books, including a six-volume treatise on ethics. Committed to Christian unity, he served as general secretary of the World Evangelical Alliance from 2021 to 2024. Yet his life has been a lightning rod of controversy—particularly when he neared the halls of power.

Even seemingly straightforward truths, he finds, have prompted critical reaction.

“If I say, ‘God is love,’” said Schirrmacher, “it could start a global discussion.”

Born in 1960, Schirrmacher traces his family history to 18th-century Huguenots exiled from Austria to Prussia. His father served on the board of the missions agency World Evangelization for Christ, and Schirrmacher interacted with many visiting missionaries. He met Billy Graham as a child, and again in 1983. By then, Schirrmacher was a young pastor who had planted seven churches. Graham advised him to continue pursuing advanced theological studies.

Sonntag muss Kirchtag sein [Sunday must be (a) feast day]

Sonntag muss Kirchtag sein

Martin Kilian aus Washington am Samstag den 4. April 2015

Kleine Geschichte

Punks? Santeria?

Frau Sylvia?

little story Church Thanksgiving

Church Thanksgiving
In the 1950s, the church service for the family was still required. Photo: Getty

«The American Sunday is a round thing: one stands up, in a bathrobe, breakfast eggswith Bacon and fried potatoes («House fries»), to waffles with maple syrup and butteralong with coffee and a Mimosa cocktail of champagne and fresh squeezed orange juice.» Of course, it is a Bloody Mary. Then the real Americans goes back to bed to the workout sex or hunting, fishing and gathering. He is a passionate Hunter and collector.

If you prefer a quieter end of his free day, placed already in the morning before the TVand watch TV. There are shows with celebrity chefs or commercial television and CNN even crises around the world. Since the stock market are neither gains nor losses recorded on Sunday. The credit cards, however, does not rest, because already at teno'clock the malls open and invite to uninhibited shopping on the day of the Lord. Forall those who work have to - and that many Americans! -takes place the Sunday to Tuesday or sonstwann.

This casual handling of Sunday aroused the resentment of people who complain about the moral as moral decline of America and everywhere smell Devil's work such as the gay marriage. That Americans always less in the churches flock, although on their money explicitly, stated they trusted «God», also aroused the displeasure of theopponents of a too popular interpretation of the Sunday for quite some time.

Welttheater

She wants to bring back the morality in the society: State Senator Sylvia all. Photo:Gage Skidmore/Flickr

What they really think, revealed a certain Sylvia Allen, of professional recently Republican in the State Senate of Arizona. Mrs Sylvia represents the town snowflake, what means, but less herzig on german «snowflake», than one might think. Snowflake was founded in 1878 by Erastus snow and William Jordan Flake? Snow and Flake - allright? Synapses okay? The founding fathers were Mormon, also wife Sylvia is committed to this belief.

Now it came recently, that the Arizona Senate again debated the permission to carry concealed weapons in public buildings. Such permission is not without: people with hidden shooting men could through the corridors of courts and tax offices and massacring people, like this unfortunately then and when happens in America. Mrs. Sylvia however sought blaming not the guns, but in the «corrupted souls».

And that's why she demanded a «moral rebirth» America's, as well as an end to the erosion of religion. «Likely», it said, «should we are debating a law that required every American to attend the Church of his choice on Sunday» Wait a minute! This is extremely heavy! Especially, since Mrs. Sylvia wistfully remembered the fifties, as all the stores on Sunday were closed and the people in the church went instead to enjoy Sunday with Mimosas and sex. Or just hunt and gather to go.

Welttheater

Praying instead of reading: Children before an altar. Photo: Getty

Even apart from African-Americans back had to sit in the 1950s in the bus and fear homosexuals for their lives and women had a total to say less than their pets, and Richard Nixon was Vice President: how should please the compulsory visit to the Church of «my choice» take administratively place? What about atheists and agnostics? With theists and pagans? Zorastergläubigen? Punks? Santería? And who should pay for transporting resistive in the churches? There is a special police force?

Questions about questions be loud. It seems rather carelessly, wife Sylvia have thought through their "moral rebirth". The concept has evidently profound gaps. There it is again to cover up! Mrs Sylvia?

Conference on Work-free Sundays and Decent Work

CONFERENCE on Work-free Sundays and Decent Work

Tuesday 21 January 2014 at the EU Parliament (Brussels)

On the occasion of a Conference at the European Parliament which gathered 120 participants, the European Sunday Alliance officially launched a Pledge for a work-free Sunday and decent work, ahead of the European elections 2014. The Pledge is aimed at committing European politicians to the promotion of a common weekly day of rest as well as a legal framework guaranteeing sustainable working time patterns based on the principle of decent work.

The pledge states that « A work-free Sunday and decent working hours are of paramount importance for citizens and workers throughout Europe and are not necessarily in conflict with economic competitiveness.  Especially in the present time of socio-economic crisis, the adoption of legislation extending working hours to late evenings, nights, bank holidays and Sundays has direct consequences for the working conditions of employees and for small and medium sized enterprises. Competitiveness needs innovation, innovation needs creativity and creativity needs recreation! ». The Pledge can be accessed here.

By signing this pledge, current members of the EU Parliament and candidates in the upcoming European elections commit themselves :

1. To ensure that all relevant EU-legislation both respects and promotes the protection of a common weekly day of rest for all EU citizens, which shall be in principle on a Sunday, in order to protect workers' health and promote a better balance between family and private life and work;

2. To promote EU-legislation guaranteeing sustainable working time patterns based on the principle of decent work benefiting society as well as the economy as a whole.

The Second European Conference on the Protection of a Work-free Sunday and Decent Work was held on the 21 January 2014 at the European Parliament (Brussels) in order to raise awareness around the Pledge and the core demands of the European Sunday Alliance. The Conference was organised by the Members of Parliament Evelyn Regner (S&D) and Thomas Mann (EPP), together with the European Sunday Alliance.

For overcoming the crisis in Europe, the creation of jobs and economic competitiveness are the main requirements.
The European Sunday alliance affirms that competitiveness and decent work can go hand in hand with a common weekly day of rest. It needs recreation to be creative, innovative, and in the end, competitive. The various pannelists and keynote speakers were of the view that today, legislation and practices in place at the EU and Member State level need to be more protective of the health, safety, dignity of everyone and should more attentively promote the balance between family and private life and work. All people in the European Union should be entitled to benefit from work-free Sundays and decent working hours. Sunday protection strengthens the social cohesion of our societies. It represents a precious feature of our heritage, which should be recognised as a fundamental pillar of the European Social and Economic Model.

Don’t Destroy This Family

January 13, 2014 4:00 AM
Germany persecutes homeschoolers, with an assist from the Obama administration.

By Kevin D. Williamson

The Romeike family

Kevin D. Williamson

Ronald Reagan electrified the world when he demanded that the Berlin Wall be torn down. Barack Obama is helping to build a new one, even as the German government begins rounding up members of a despised religious minority.

The Romeike family was granted asylum in the United States because the German government was intent on wresting away the children and putting the parents in cages for the crime of homeschooling their children, which is verboten in Germany, a legacy of the country’s totalitarian past. The Obama administration, which in other notable areas of immigration law has enacted a policy of “discretion” regarding deportations, took the Romeike family to court to have its asylum protections revoked, and succeeded in doing so. The family has appealed to the Supreme Court, which has ordered the Obama administration to respond to the Romeikes’ petition, but the administration has so far refused to do so.

As the Romeikes’ story unfolds, another German family is being held in the country against their will, also for the crime of homeschooling their children — or intending to do so, at least. The Wunderlich family had their children kidnapped by the German government — the agents of which came crashing through their door with battering rams — as retaliation for their homeschooling. They complied with the government’s demands regarding their children’s education and, understandably enough, began the process of relocating to France, where attitudes toward family life are more civilized. The Germans responded by refusing to reinstate their custody of their children, with a judge determining that the desire to homeschool presents an “endangerment” to the children.

That is the environment into which the Obama administration intends to send the Romeike family.

Why?

The institutional Left hates homeschooling, hates it with a remarkable intensity, even though homeschooling recently has come into vogue with a certain subset of Park Slope–style progressives. Robin West of Georgetown’s law school has written admiringly of the suppression of homeschooling and regimes under which “parents who did so were criminals.” She writes that homeschoolers are dangerous precisely because of the fact that, far from being docile sheep, homeschoolers are as adults more likely to be politically engaged, which Professor West worries might “undermine, limit, or destroy state functions that interfere with family and parental rights.” For good measure, she notes that many homeschoolers were enthusiastic about George W. Bush in 2000 — quelle horreur. Many others on the left argue that homeschooling should be either banned outright or effectively regulated out of existence.

Homeschooling terrifies the Left because the Left is at its core totalitarian, seeking to bring political discipline to every aspect of life — and control of education is essential to that project. The public school is in miniature what the Left believes the world should look like: Everybody arranged in orderly rows and moving about on an orderly schedule punctuated by bells, being taught about diversity and climate change by nice union ladies who also lead them to their federally subsidized lunches. If you can say “no” to that, you can say no to any part of the Left’s vision. Homeschooling is an existential threat to the privileged position of the institutional Left. The schools are the factory in which it manufactures its future clients.

Of course it doesn’t help that homeschooling is associated in the public mind with a particular strain of evangelical Christianity, as in the case of the Romeike family. It is distasteful, but it should not be a surprise that the Obama administration has no objection to the political and religious suppression of such unruly Christians — the Obama administration is doing the same thing to the Little Sisters of the Poor and other Christian groups that it finds inconvenient.

In the case of the Romeike family, a judge already had seen fit to offer them asylum, but the Obama administration wants to hand them over to the Germans. In the case of the Wunderlich family, a fundamental human right — the right to move away, which is enshrined in German law — is being grossly violated. The Germans, of all people, should appreciate that walling in people who want to leave is uncivilized. The Obama administration has an opportunity to make a statement on both cases by dropping its assault on the Romeikes. Don’t let’s be beastly to the Germans.

No criminal proceedings against Walter Veith

Update: bing translation of a German article:

13th June 2013 by DP

Walter Veith - Amazing Discoveries

The former zoology Professor Walter Veith is not investigated for suspicion of sedition. This was announced by the Prosecutor's Office Nuremberg-Fürth on request.

[Nuremberg/Dresden] Veith had expressed anti-Semitic positions in October 2012 in a speech in Nuremberg. All living Jews were declared to (be) Khazars, members of an earlier Asian people in truth. Veith described the Holocaust as a move with the Freemasons wanted to gather the Jews from all over Europe for the establishment of the Israeli State.

The Church of the Seventh day Adventists, whose Community Center the lecture took place and belongs to the Veith, promptly condemned statements made. You would be a "Criminal trivializing of the Nazi reign of terror very close" so the church leadership. Also on the website of EANN, readers that pointed that the statements could be possibly punishable. Jewish voices expressed sharp criticism of the lecture.

The public prosecutor's Office investigated whether the initial suspicion of a crime would be seen. She have "that being said, an investigation to launch, since the review of the lecture has revealed that the remarks of Mr Veith realize no offence" but ultimately, as the spokesperson of the Prosecutor's Office Nuremberg-Fürth, Prosecutor Antje Gabriel Gorsolke. Had not been a formal complaint against Veith.

Under the German Penal Code, the criminal liability of anti-Semitic statements on certain conditions is linked. Such statements, involving crimes of national socialism are approved, denied or played down and at the same time to with them to endanger the public peace are punishable (section 130 subsection 3 of the Criminal Code). For this, the public prosecutor's Office apparently saw no sufficient clues that would require an investigation.

AD Editor: Pauschalisierte (Lumped everything togethertoo much Veith

The private association "Amazing Discoveries" serves as the event agency and media distribution of lectures of Vahadane. In an interview with YouTube, the editor of "Amazing Discoveries" for the range of media admitted that Veith to sweeping have expressed in the presentation about the origins of the Jews.
The editor, however, wrote the presumption that Veith could committed an offence, to exaggerated sensitivity of Germans. "Germany is really little in this respect. Made it even to the law, that it is not allowed is to deny the Holocaust or events of the NAZI era in any way, only to put into perspective or to trivialize", so the employees of"Amazing Discoveries". When a breach of prison would threaten up to five years. Amazed laughing, his American interviewees argued that this is contrary to freedom of expression and freedom of speech. "In this respect, it is limited. Unfortunately' ruled the editor about banning Holocaust denial.

Supporters of Veith feared religious persecution

That the public prosecutor's Office verified the statements, Walter Veith had publicized a month after the lecture. "A case of Volksverhetzung (incitement against the Government) because apparently anti-Semitic statements in my talk to Daniel 11 was opened against me," Veith wrote. Ellen White, co-founder of Seventh-day Adventists, 1915 deceased have predicted but that such would happen. Veith pointed to quotes from white, whereby Satan will cause a confusion and persecution of believers. "So I am good things, because there the spirit of prophecy [meant is Ellen White - Note d. red.] as correctly proves"concluded Veith.

The news triggered uncertainty worldwide Veith supporters. In social networks, it was feared that this could be the prelude to an expected end time persecution of believers. Veith was seen due to the alleged persecution in a series with Paul, Luther, and Hus. Encouragement by the extreme right-wing opinion leaders Christian Vivian Bacon received Veith. "Brother Veith", so Bart Hel, subject themselves to the faith will not of political correctness and instead against apostasy. Bart Hel wrote that the own Church had prohibited Veith to speak publicly in Germany reveal the Gleichschaltung (forcing into line?of the churches by enigmatic powers, in a press release, which was taken over by several right-extremist-oriented Web sites. Reports also circulated that Veith in Germany had already been imprisoned because he had criticized the Catholic Church.

The Press Office of the Nuremberg public prosecutor's Office, however, expressly emphasized that during the referred Veith, nor any other person were considered suspect.

Original article in German:

Kein Strafverfahren gegen Walter Veith

13. Juni 2013 von DP

Walter Veith – Amazing Discoveries
