Who is driving the campaign against the Order of Malta?

Somebody has got it in for the Order of Malta, the 900-year-old Catholic order which maintains hospitals and runs charitable activities all over the world. In Italy, a stream of very similar articles has been appearing, beginning with an attack last October in the left-wing newspaper Il Fatto Quotidiano, by a journalist writing as Thomas Mackinson. In recent weeks there has been an accelerating series of articles under different names, all of them repeating the same criticisms. People in the Order’s ambit are beginning to wonder who is putting them up to it and why.

The articles accuse the Order of betraying a reform intended by Pope Francis, who wanted to bring it more into line with the life of a full religious order. The criticisms highlight the role of the professed knights – those who take the traditional religious vows – and assert that these need to be made to live in community so as to be true religious. What the articles do not explain, however, and indeed seriously misrepresent, is how the Order came to be in its present position.

The background is the crisis precipitated among the knights by Pope Francis in January 2017, when he forced the Grand Master, the Englishman Matthew Festing, to resign. The result was effectively putting the Order into the hands of its German branch, under the Grand Chancellor (effectively prime minister of the Order) Albrecht von Boeselager. The German-backed faction consolidated their control in the five-yearly elections to the Order’s government held in 2019. Of the 18 names back by this camp, all but one were elected.

As Pope Francis prepares to announce his decision on the future of the Order of Malta, senior knights have warned that a slate of Vatican-imposed changes to its leadership have left the order’s sovereignty in shreds, and drawn the authority of the order’s new leader - Lieutenant Grand Master John Dunlap - into question.

Francis is expected to direct the knights soon to convene a chapter meeting, at which they will be expected to ratify a draft constitution approved by the pope before the summit. Ahead of the impending chapter, the pope has already appointed an interim leader for the Order of Malta, and his cardinal delegate reshuffled the heads of the group’’s priories around the world.

But senior members of the order have been quietly, but frantically, pushing back — begging the pope to reconsider proposals for their future governance, and warning that Vatican “arbitrary interference” in their affairs has divided their members, and pushed beyond limits the balance between the order’s sovereign legal status and its religious identity.

Some leaders warned the pope this month that plans under papal consideration might cause even “a break-up of the Order of Malta” itself.

The Order of Malta is a Catholic religious order dating back more than 900 years, it also has a unique status in international law, with the ability to maintain full diplomatic relations with nations, and a seat as a permanent observer at the United Nations. The order operates humanitarian relief efforts around the world.

The group has been in a protracted process of constitutional reform since 2017. After years of gridlock, last October Pope Francis gave his personal delegate to the order, Cardinal Silvano Tomasi, sweeping powers to change the knights’ religious life and internal governance, despite concerns that this could violate the order’s sovereign status in international law.

After a public breakdown of negotiations between Tomasi’s team and the order’s leadership, Pope Francis announced earlier this year that he would make a final decision on the reform of the knights himself, and held a series of listening sessions with Tomasi’s delegation and representatives from the knights.

As they wait for Francis’ final decision, unprecedented exchanges in recent weeks between and among the knights’ members and leaders suggest that the order may already be so divided that a workable settlement is now impossible.

In a meeting with his own advisors and the order’s leadership last week, Francis was presented with options for the order’s constitutional future — a presentation that some believe will be the pope’s final consultation on the order before he announces a decision on how it should be reformed.

Some sources suggest that decision could come as early as September 3.

The Aug. 17 meeting took place just days after the presidents of 13 national associations of the order presented the pope with a “plea for a lawful and effective reform process to avoid a possible break-up of the Order of Malta.”

“If the draft constitution proposed by [the pope’s special delegate to the order] Cardinal Tomasi remains in its current state,” the presidents warned the pope, both the order and its charitable works around the globe “would suffer massive damage.”

The letter to Pope Francis, a copy of which was obtained by The Pillar, was sent Aug. 12, and reiterated widespread concerns among the order’s leadership about plans to concentrate operational control of the order’s work among the first class knights of the order, who make religious vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and from whom the order’s senior officers are drawn — but who now number only 36.

In addition to being a Catholic religious order, the knights are a recognized sovereign entity in international law, issuing their own passports, maintaining bilateral diplomatic relations with other nations, and enjoying the same recognition and status at the United Nations as the Holy See.

“While these Professed Knights are valuable members to the Order,” the national presidents wrote, “it is not feasible that the work of over 13,000 heavily engaged people can be fulfilled by less than 40 people, who do not have the experience or qualifications to responsibly manage an organisation of that scale.”

“We, therefore, plead to Your Holiness to allow the newly appointed Lieutenant of the Grand Master Fra’ John Dunlap, together with the elected Government and your delegate [Cardinal Tomasi] to reunite the Order and to work with all its members in good faith towards determining the most appropriate canonical structure for the Order of Malta under its valid constitution and code without arbitrary interference.”

ROME — WikiLeaks, the tell-anything anti-secrecy organization, on Wednesday took aim at one of the world’s most secretive institutions, the Vatican, releasing a small collection of documents about a power struggle involving Pope Francis, a leading traditionalist cardinal and a medieval Catholic order of knights.

The documents offered little new about a fight that two years ago was widely covered in the media. Their contents seem especially paltry at a time when the Vatican is embroiled in full-fledged scandals on multiple continents. But the release represented the first time WikiLeaks has turned its spotlight on the often-acrimonious internal affairs of the Holy See, and some Vatican watchers wondered whether more damaging secrets might start to escape the city-state’s walls.

“The fact itself, WikiLeaks entering the internal affairs of the Vatican, is an alarm bell,” said Marco Politi, a veteran Vatican watcher. “The subject itself is not interesting. These are old diatribes, old fights. But the important thing will be the next step. Will there be a subsequent WikiLeaks [release] on something not previously revealed? Should WikiLeaks pull out stuff regarding pedophilia or banking scandals, then we would be on to something new.”

Though the Vatican has been burned by leaks in the past — mostly notably when a trove of confidential documents was released in 2012 with help from then-Pope Benedict XVI’s butler — the city-state is famed for its airtight hold on information, including its paperwork on cases involving sexual abuse.

A Vatican spokesman noted that WikiLeaks had previously touched on church affairs, in 2010, but the documents leaked then were cables from the U.S. Embassy, describing diplomatic relations with the Holy See. WikiLeaks Editor in Chief Kristinn Hrafnsson said Wednesday was the first time the organization released documents about the Vatican “conflict between the different factions.”

The documents stemmed from a knotty fight over leadership within the Knights of Malta, a sovereign Catholic order that in 2016 was found to have distributed contraceptives in some of the countries where it does charitable work. A power struggle ensued between the pope and the aristocratic order, and some observers said the tensions were exacerbated by Cardinal Raymond Burke, a papal adversary who was the group’s liaison to the Vatican.


But by the end, the pope had prevailed, forcing the resignation of the order’s grand master and installing his own apostolic delegate to the order.

WikiLeaks, describing some of the documents it released, recounted those events and said that the pope had “deeply undermined the Order’s independence and sovereignty.” Although it was unclear who shared the documents with WikiLeaks, that framing clearly echoed critics of the pope.

Among other documents, WikiLeaks released a letter from Francis to Burke, written before the conflagration had reached its height, indicating that he was keeping watch on developments. Several journalists said the letter had been in wide circulation, though it had not been made public.

Francis has become more vulnerable to opposition, and even dissent, as his papacy has been hobbled by a series of sexual-abuse-related crises. The faith’s leaders are divided over his handling of those crises, as well as his somewhat more permissive stance on social issues and his use of power. In August, a former Vatican ambassador — in the most visible form of friction of Francis’s papacy — accused the pope of knowing about and failing to act on the alleged abuse of seminarians by then-Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. The ambassador said Francis should resign.


Francis has not responded to the accusations. The Vatican subsequently said it was preparing “necessary clarifications.” The Vatican also said it was studying its archived records of McCarrick and would eventually “make known the conclusions.”

But so far, the church has taken neither promised step. And the files, for now, remain secret.

The historian Henry Sire has been expelled from the Order of Malta after writing a book which heavily criticised Pope Francis.

Sire was suspended in March, when the Order set up a disciplinary commission. His book, entitled The Dictator Pope, criticised Francis’s interventions in religious orders, and said the Pope had introduced doctrinal ambiguity, following the programme of the “St Gallen mafia” who brought about his election. Sire also claimed the Vatican was increasingly dominated by corrupt churchmen, while officials with integrity lived in fear of the sack.

The book divided opinion: some reviewers praised the book as an accurate portrayal, while others said it was inadequately sourced and guilty of irreverence towards the Pope.

Now, the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Giacomo Dalla Torre, has decreed that Sire be expelled, as his book is “gravely offensive and disrespectful to the person of the Holy Father” and his conduct “gravely incompatible with his membership of the Order”.

Sire has defended the book as a necessary warning to the Church, saying that he hopes it will help the cardinals at the next conclave “to avoid making the same mistake”. In a statement following his expulsion, Sire said that he wrote his book “for the good of the Church, in defence of the Faith and in obedience to the duty of a Christian to witness to the truth”.

But the decree of expulsion says that, while canon law recognises a right to public commentary on the Church, it also says that such commentary must show “reverence” to “pastors”, and be “attentive to common advantage and the dignity of persons”. The decree says Sire overstepped the mark.

The expulsion was immediately followed by disagreement about whether due process had been followed.

It’s well-known that some passports are more powerful than others. Take, for example, the German passport, thought of as the most powerful global entry tool on Earth. As Travel + Leisure previously reported, German passport holders can visit 177 countries around the world without needing a visa.

And while being able to visit more countries is cool, what may be even cooler is being a card-carrying member of the world’s most exclusive passport: the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.


What Your Passport Color Really Means

Most passports come in shades of red, blue, green, and black. Sometimes the reason behind the color is geographical, sometimes it's political, sometimes its religious. Other times? It matches the flag or is faith-based.

According to the Independent, the Catholic order, which had its sovereignty recognized by Pope Paschal in 1113, is home to the world’s rarest passport. In fact, only 500 of these passports are in circulation around the globe right now, according to the Order.

Diplomatic passports, according to the Sovereign Order of Malta, are granted only to “the members of the Sovereign Council (the government), to heads and members of its Diplomatic Missions (as well as their consort and minor children), and – with very few exceptions – to senior figures in charge of a special missions within the Order of Malta.”

The passports only remain valid for four years and are strictly linked to the duration of a given assignment by the Order.

The Sovereign Order of Malta maintains diplomatic relations with 106 states, meaning all of these states accept the diplomatic passports as a valid form of identification. The passports even include biometric features and are compliant with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.

Currently, the Sovereign Order of Malta is active in 120 countries, where it helps to care for people in need through its medical, social, and humanitarian works. The Order is especially involved in helping people living in the midst of armed conflicts and natural disasters. It is also a permanent observer status at the United Nations.

Additionally, as the Order noted on its site, “It is neutral, impartial and apolitical.” As the Independent explained, the order is currently made up of over 13,500 knights, dames, and chaplains along with 80,000 permanent volunteers and 25,000 employees, so obtaining one of those 500 coveted passports is even rare among this limited crowd.

Conservative Criticism Intensifies Against Pope Francis

Conservative criticism of Pope Francis intensified Saturday after his intervention in the Knights of Malta order, with posters appearing around Rome citing his actions against conservative Catholics and asking: "Where's your mercy?"

The posters appeared on the same day that Francis cemented his authority over the Knights by naming a top Vatican archbishop, Angelo Becciu, to be his special delegate to the ancient aristocratic order.

Francis gave Becciu, the No. 2 in the Vatican secretariat of state, "all necessary powers" to help lay the groundwork for a new constitution for the order, lead the spiritual renewal of its professed knights and prepare for the election of a new grand master, expected in three months.

The Vatican's intervention with the sovereign group had provided fuel for Francis' conservative critics, who until Saturday had largely confined their concern with his mercy-over-morals papacy to blogs, interviews and conferences.

On Saturday, dozens of posters appeared around Rome featuring a stern-looking Francis and referencing the "decapitation" of the Knights and other actions Francis has taken against conservative, tradition-minded groups.

Within hours, the city of Rome had plastered over the posters. Police launched an investigation into the conservative circles believed responsible, aided by closed-circuit cameras, the ANSA news agency said.

The posters, written in Roman dialect, also cited the way Francis had "ignored cardinals," a reference to the four cardinals who have publicly asked Francis to clarify whether divorced and civilly remarried Catholics can receive Communion.

Francis hasn't responded directly, though he has made it clear he favors case-by-case allowances.

One of the four cardinals is Raymond Burke, a conservative American whom the pope removed as the Vatican's supreme court judge in 2014 and named to be his liaison with the Knights of Malta. Burke, a staunch defender of Catholic doctrine on sexual morals, has become Francis' most vocal critic and was instrumental in the Knights' saga.

With Burke's support, the Knights' grand master Fra' Matthew Festing sacked the grand chancellor, Albert von Boeselager, over a condom scandal. After learning that the ouster had been done in his name, Francis effectively took over the order. He asked Festing to resign, restored Boeselager to his position, declared all the Knights' sovereign decisions on the matter "null and void" and appointed Becciu to help run the order temporarily.

Becciu's mandate as the pope's "exclusive spokesman" with the order now confirms Burke's marginalization.

In his letter Saturday, Francis said Becciu would work in "close collaboration" with the No. 2 official who technically is in charge at the Knights. But he stressed: "I delegate to you all the necessary powers to decide possible questions that might emerge in carrying out the mandate I have given you."

At a press conference this week, Boeselager insisted the order's sovereignty was never in question during the standoff, though he acknowledged the Vatican's strident statements had led to such misunderstanding that he planned to convene ambassadors accredited to the order to explain.

The Knights are a unique organization: An aristocratic lay religious order that traces its history to the Crusades, the order runs a vast humanitarian organization around the world involving over 100,000 staff and volunteers. The order also enjoys sovereign status and has diplomatic relations with over 100 countries, the Holy See included.

The curia remains a place where cliques have more authority than the law. It doesn't bode well

The most remarkable thing about the Order of Malta controversy is not that the Grand Master, Fra’ Matthew Festing, has resigned. That is extraordinary enough, especially given that it was apparently on the invitation of Pope Francis. No, the most astonishing feature of the story is today’s announcement that the Pope will install an Apostolic Delegate to run the Order. In effect, this abolishes the Order as a sovereign entity. Under international law, what we are seeing is effectively the annexation of one country by another.

How did it come to this? Somehow, the small clique who rallied around the former Grand Chancellor, Albrecht Boeselager, have managed to turn a matter of the Order’s own internal governance into a full-blown diplomatic crisis between the two oldest and most prominent sovereign entities in the western world.

The clique never had much of a case. As I have written before, there is no question that, legally speaking, the commission set up on the recommendation of the Holy See’s Secretariat of State to investigate his sacking of Boeselager was and remains totally illegitimate.

It is clear that Boeselager was dismissed, following his refusal to resign, according to the approved legal process of the Order. It has been alleged that Fra’ Festing “defied” Pope Francis by dismissing Boeselager. But any opinion the Pope may have expressed before the event would have been in the much-rumoured letter on the matter from the Pope directly to Cardinal Burke, the Holy See’s envoy to the Order. This letter has not even been formally confirmed as existing, let alone leaked. Its purported contents remain the great unanswered question at the heart of this whole affair.

As far as one can tell from the various reports, the Pope actually gave no indication that he was opposed to the firing of Boeselager. In fact, the Holy Father seems to have been deeply concerned about the gravity of the allegations against Boeselager and even at the possibility of masonic infiltration of the Order’s membership and activities. The fact that the actual text of this letter has remained totally confidential speaks volumes about the discretion and respect for the Holy Father of both the Cardinal Patron and the Grand Master, even as they have been publicly accused of the opposite.

Fra’ Festing’s humility and courtesy are typical of the man. He has served the Order and the Pope well, with total devotion and respect for the obligations of the law and his position. And now, he has been forced from his position for doing his duty. Yet Boeselager – who refused to obey a direct order from his sovereign – and his allies have triumphed.

These allies have carried out a sordid campaign of leaked letters from Cardinal Parolin’s department, which served the sad and obvious end of framing a public narrative in which Fra’ Festing supposedly “defied” the explicit wishes of the Pope. In fact, even according to the confused and changeable timeline constructed by his friends, it was clear that Boeselager was dismissed well before Cardinal Parolin’s apparent (and still illegitimate) intervention.

The sad and severe consequences of this chain of events are considerable. The international legitimacy of the Order of Malta is now in ruins, its constitutional integrity and diplomatic standing now seem beyond repair.

Today’s announcement of an Apostolic Delegate to be appointed by the Pope represents, essentially, the total abrogation of the Order’s sovereignty. Yet the consequences for the Holy See itself may, in the longer term, be equally or even more severe. The disregard for the mutually sovereign relationship between the Holy See and the Order sets a precedent in international law, which will now lurk under the Secretariat of State’s dealings with other governments like an unexploded bomb.

If the Holy See can so brazenly insert itself into the internal governance of another sovereign entity whose legitimacy stems from a mutual agreement under international law, it now has no legal defence should another sovereign body, say the government of the Italian Republic, choose to view the independence of the Holy See as a similarly anachronistic formality. Cardinal Parolin should prepare to see today’s actions cited as legitimate precedent when the IOR, commonly called the Vatican Bank, finds its sovereign independence under renewed pressure from other countries or international bodies. Pope Benedict XVI said that “a society without laws is a society without rights”; the naked disregard for the law shown in recent weeks has sown a bitter harvest for the Holy See’s diplomatic corps to reap in the future.

For those less concerned with the diplomatic and legal aspects of this situation, there is one over-riding truth which has emerged from all this. It is now clear that for all the great hopes of curial reform which accompanied the election of Pope Francis, the Vatican remains a place where cliques and personal networks have more authority than the law, and where leaking and smearing remain part of the everyday business of governance.

The Pope himself is, as he has often stated, not a lawyer, nor is the law something he is known to have much interest in. Those in his curia who have prompted him to this action have deliberately served him, the office of the papacy, the international sovereignty of the Holy See, and of course the men and women of the Order of Malta, incredibly badly. I suspect it is now just a matter of when, not if, they come to regret it.

ROME — The Knights of Malta is still insisting on its sovereignty in its showdown with the Vatican, even after Pope Francis effectively took control of the ancient religious order and announced a papal delegate would govern it through a “process of renewal.”

The Knights’ current grand master, Fra’ Matthew Festing, was at work Friday at the order’s swanky Rome palazzo near the Spanish Steps, pending a meeting of his governing council to either accept or reject his resignation.

The Saturday meeting is evidence of the order’s sovereign status under international law, which is recognized by the more than 100 countries that have diplomatic relations with the Knights of Malta and essentially consider it a state.

Festing, a 67-year-old British aristocrat, met Tuesday with Francis and said he would resign after he lost an internal power struggle that started with a scandal over condoms. Festing sacked the Knights’ foreign minister, Albrecht von Boeselager, over the condom scandal.

But the Vatican intervened on Boeselager’s behalf and announced this week that the pope had accepted Festing’s resignation and would name a papal delegate to run the order.

The Knights of Malta is an ancient chivalric order that runs hospitals and clinics around the world. It counts 13,500 Knights, Dames and chaplains, 80,000 permanent volunteers and 25,000 employees, most of them medical personnel who lend first aid in war zones, natural disasters and conflict areas.

The Knights are questioning the pope’s right to name a delegate to govern the order, since its sovereign constitution clearly sets out the process for selecting its leadership.

There are subtle differences that each one of us notice, that was my main motivation to produce this video. At the end of the day its the Principal behind the subject that motivates one to any conclusion. Alan Lamont's message of Repentance and Obedience has been very well received here and applied to my person, I do believe that he is perhaps getting worn out by Attacks against the Bible Principals and has been absent from making videos recently, there is a calling for those of us to stand up and hold fast to the same principals. I believe I am being called by the Spirit and the moment with what little time I have to bring this to Light. Its nothing Personal, its Principal. This is what I find so incredibly significant with Jörg Glismann, Walt Stickel and Tom Friess at the moment, they are bringing a clear focus of History in Light of Bible Prophecy and getting a grip on the Spiritual Conspiracy that holds the Political Conspiracy under its Rule of Law and Jurisdiction.

The first part of this video is my updated version of one of Alan Lamont's videos on SMOM or rather, Knights of Malta. I tried to update the work to the best of my ability. Source Confirms Pope Will Remove Conservative Cardinal from Vatican

Though it has been only a rumor until now, and has not yet been announced by the Vatican, a close associate of Cardinal Raymond Burke has told Breitbart News that the rumors of his departure are true, and the announcement is expected soon.

The source said Burke has been told he is out as head of the Apostolic Signatura and that he will assume the position of chaplain to the Order of Malta, a do-gooding organization of wealthy and sometimes European-titled Catholics.

Burke is a darling of Catholic conservatives around the world, having taken strong positions against pro-abortion politicians receiving communion, holding firm on traditional liturgy, and even excommunicating women who have tried to become ordained priests.

The source also told Breitbart News that the Pope did not ask Cardinal Burke where he wanted to go, which would have been a friendly gesture to someone the Pope wanted out of the powerful position in what could be considered Chief Justice of the Vatican Supreme Court.

In recent weeks, Burke has been outspoken that the upcoming planning session for the Synod of Bishops cannot change Church teaching on marriage. He went so far as to co-author a book with other Cardinals making this clear, something that puts Burke at odds with some of the closer associates of Pope Francis.

The source added, "Cardinal Burke wasn't even asked. He could have been given a diocese somewhere. As chaplain to Malta he has no role in the governance of the Church. This is just mean. He's been given a ceremonial role that usually goes to an 80 year old in his retirement and not to a 66 year old man in his prime."

Burke’s firing would come almost a year after Pope Francis removed Cardinal Burke from the powerful Vatican committee that chooses Bishops around the world. It was here that Burke had the strongest influence.

Some say we all have a story to tell – something deep inside us which only needs a tap and it will magically flow out.

Steve Berry had more than one story embedded inside him and, once he managed to tap them out, they flowed on and on.

And people flocked to read his stories – he’s sold more than 18 million copies – all riveting, all page-turners, nearly all bestsellers.

Berry was on the island to write a book about the Knights of Malta. I met him at the Westin Dragonara, St Julian’s, where he was staying while he researched the knights, their history, their ways and how they have changed throughout the centuries.

The novel, which will feature Malta in a big way, will be a modern-day yarn featuring Cotton Malone.

Malone is a former Justice Department operative who can’t stay out of trouble. In various Steve Berry bestsellers Cotton Malone has criss-crossed the globe on electrifying quests.

With the smart and capable Cassiopeia Vitt by his side, Malone faces down the world’s deadliest threats – unravel-ling, along the way, some of history’s most legendary and iconic mysteries.

With his last seven suspense thrillers, Berry has managed to get into the prestigious New York Times bestsellers list.

Actually, if you ask people in the know, this is beyond prestigious –it is the bar by which publishers and anyone involved in the book trade gauge the success, or otherwise, of authors.

While working as a trial lawyer – with all its stress and tough demands – he realised he had innervoices crying out to get on with it and write thrillers.

Finally, after 85 rejections, a publisher accepted a book of his

So he researched and scribbled away in his spare time, penning suspense thrillers which he finalised and sent to publishers.

However, he kept receiving those horrid slips which no author likes to even think of ­– rejection slips. He plodded on and persisted in writing – and sending off – his manuscripts. But that wasn’t enough and he also sought office as one of the county commissioners of Camden in Georgia.

Berry was elected and held office for 14 years, one of five who ran the county which is larger than Malta, as Camden is 35 miles long (Malta is approx. 19 miles) although it only has a population of 50,000.

While all this was going on he was coming up with yarns that make you want to turn the page quicker than you can blink but which required a lot of planning, research time and writing.

Finally, after 85 rejections, a publisher accepted a book of his, The Amber Room, along with two others and success was immediate.

Top books like The Templar Legacy and The Lincoln Myth followed and Berry has had a spiralling of bigger successes.

The world had changed and suspense thrillers were then back in fashion after losing their stellar quality for publishers when the Cold War had ended.

The Da Vinci Code broke new ground and publishers realised this genre of books, which Berry was writing even before Dan Brown had made a name for himself, were hot property and millions of them could be sold.

And hugely sold they were. Berry left his law practice and now concentrates only on writing and churning out good plots.

While discussing plots, books, voices and super success, I ask Berry rather conspiratorially – trying hard to sound like one of his books’ characters – if there is anything wrong with Malta. He bellows a loud “Yes!” in his Georgia twang, as he laughs away.

“There’s one big problem with this country and that is that my time here is limited. I’m loving it here. The level of hospitality at the hotel and throughout Malta is really high. Malta is truly blessed with grand vistas and remarkable heritage and architecture. The story of the knights will be fun to plan and write,” Berry says.

The book is due out in 2018 and Berry tells me he would just love to see its international launch with Fort St Angelo as a backdrop. “It would be just magic,” says Berry, who is also a founder member of the 2,600-member International Thriller Writers.

Malone, the modern-day protagonist of Berry’s latest thrillers, is, however, rather destructive and will surely have a few difficult escapades in Malta and Gozo.

Some places here on the island will witness carnage and mayhem. “Thankfully,” Berry adds, “all this will happen in fiction so Malta’s palaces and art will remain intact and impressive even after the book is finalised.”

Malta is a small island - and Valletta is the smallest capital in the EU. But now the former British colony is getting a planet-sized chunk of attention.

Later this month, the Duchess of Cambridge will represent the Queen on her first official overseas trip without Prince William (or Prince George) to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Maltese independence.

Already the island has gone Kate-crazy. People could talk of little else as I travelled around Malta and its neighbour, Gozo.

The Duchess will feel at home on Malta, where 150 years of British rule have left their mark. The Maltese drive on the left, British phone and post boxes are everywhere, there's even a M&S in Valletta - and they still use three-pin electric plugs.

What's more, Malta has been held in great affection by the Queen for nearly 70 years. Between 1949 and 1951, as Princess Elizabeth, she lived just outside Valletta, when Prince Philip was stationed there as a naval officer.

The links were strengthened during the war when the island came under Luftwaffe bombardment. It held out and was awarded the George Cross by George VI as a result.

It's a pity the Duchess will be there for only two days - there's so much to see on these small, but fascinating islands.

Malta is by far the larger of the two and the more crowded, while Gozo is the deserted, rural cousin. Do take the regular 25-minute ferry across the channel that separates the islands.

Both are so rich in history that I swam off the golden-red sands of Ramla Bay, on northern Gozo, without realising its significance. Only later did I discover this was the beach where Odysseus, hero of Homer's Odyssey, was washed up, clinging on to a timber, the last fragment of his shipwrecked boat.

He was given refuge in a nearby cave by Calypso, a drop-dead gorgeous nymph. He promptly hopped into bed with her. Calypso's Cave, on the hill overlooking the bay, was depressingly short on attractive nymphs.

Back on Malta, Valletta was a delight. It's only a three-hour flight from London, but it feels tropical: a former British colony meets Italy meets Arab Africa. Sicily is only 50 miles north; Tunisia 176 miles west.

The city is built on a grid, like an early Manhattan, but there are no skyscrapers and all but essential traffic is banned.

At its heart is St John's Co-Cathedral, built by the Knights of Malta from 1573. The knights — from Italy, Provence, Auvergne and Aragon - competed to produce the most ornate chapels. The result is a blingy series of gilded rooms, studded with baroque monuments.

The generous knights gave two Caravaggios, of St Jerome and The Beheading Of John The Baptist, to the cathedral. Both are still there.

As a crucial naval port, Valletta once had a rackety side, concentrated on Strait Street, in the heart of the city. Nicknamed 'the Gut' by heavy drinking sailors, it was once thick with brothels, bars and seedy lodging houses.

These days, the Gut has cleaned up its act - I ate well at Palazzo Preca, a 16th-century palace at 54 Strait Street, run by the pretty, young Preca sisters, Ramona and Roberta.

For a grander experience of Malta, stay at the Phoenicia, which the Queen and Prince Philip visited for naval parties when they lived on Malta. It has all the charms of a grand colonial hotel — along with free wi-fi and excellent service.

I can understand how Odysseus couldn't tear himself away from Malta and Gozo for seven years. You might find it just as difficult to leave.

The relationship between the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in London and the Order of Malta “is likely to alter”, the order has said.

In a statement, the order said: “Following an extraordinary general meeting on March 31 at the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in north London (the Company) to change the Company’s articles of association, a special resolution was passed, by a vote of the majority, rescinding the right of the British Association of the Order of Malta to nominate members to the Board and to the Company.

“As a result, the relationship of the British Association of the Order of Malta with the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth in north London is likely to alter. The changes, if implemented in the hospital’s Scheme, will require the approval of the Charity Commission.

“In line with its 900-year old commitment to the poor and the sick, the order currently runs inner-city soup kitchens and 78 care homes in England providing an array of services for the elderly.”

The order’s relationship with the Hospital of St John and St Elizabeth, known informally as “John and Lizzie’s”, dates back to the hospital’s foundation in 1856.

A spokesman for the hospital declined to comment.
