In Washington on the weekend after the Fourth of July, Israel was praised and Iran was condemned in the strongest terms, with a bit of a call to arms thrown in to prepare the nation for an inevitable war. It might just seem like a normal work week in the nation’s capital, but this time around there was a difference. The rhetoric came from no less than five senior officials in the Trump Administration and the audience consisted of 5,000 cheering members from the Christian Zionist evangelical group called Christians United for Israel (CUFI).

Christian Zionism is not a religion per se, but rather a set of beliefs based on interpretations of specific parts of the Bible – notably the book of Revelations and parts of Ezekiel, Daniel, and Isaiah – that has made the return of the Jews to the Holy Land a precondition for the Second Coming of Christ. The belief that Israel is essential to the process has led to the fusion of Christianity with Zionism, hence the name of the movement. The political significance of this viewpoint is enormous, meaning that a large block of Christians promotes and votes for a non-reality based foreign policy based on a controversial interpretation of the Bible that it embraces with considerable passion.

It would be a mistake to dismiss CUFI as just another group of bible-thumpers whose brains have long since ceased to function when the subject is Israel. It claims to have seven million members and it serves as a mechanism for uniting evangelicals around the issue of Israel. Given its numbers alone and concentration is certain states, it therefore constitutes a formidable voting bloc that can be counted on to cast its ballots nearly 100% Republican, as long as the Republican in question is reliably pro-Israel. Beyond that, there are an estimated 60 million evangelical voters throughout the country and they will likely follow the lead of groups like CUFI and vote reflecting their religious beliefs, to include Trump’s highly visible support for the Jewish state.

Trump’s reelection campaign is reported to be already “…developing an aggressive, state-by-state plan to mobilize even more evangelical voters than supported him last time.” This will include, “voter registration drives at churches in battleground states such as Ohio, Nevada and Florida.” Without overwhelming evangelical support, Trump reelection in 2020 is unlikely, hence the dispatch of all available White House heavyweights to CUFI’s annual summit at the Washington Convention Center.

Though it is an organization that defines itself as Christian, CUFI makes no effort to support surviving Christian communities in the Middle East as most of them are hostile to Israel. The group also supports war against Iran as a precursor to total global conflict. Hagee has explained that “The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.”

Jesuit End Times Antichrist Deception

This end times deception page will explain how the concepts of a one-man end-times Antichrist in a 7-year tribulation period became so prevalent, after 1800 years of Biblical teaching that knew nothing of the sort.

So how is it possible that the majority of today’s Pastors are teaching false doctrine about prophecy?

Have they been misled? Are they ignorant? Are they wolves in sheep’s clothing?

In order to understand the answers to these questions, we first need to see where the deception started, and then follow how it become so widely accepted.

Satan empowered the Roman Catholic Church to persecute the church of Jesus, which drove Christians and the Word of God into obscurity.

The truth about Jesus love, grace, forgiveness of all their sins, and the gift of eternal life, which had been taught by the early church, was buried under the weight of Catholic tradition, and salvation by works.

During the Dark Ages, the Roman Catholic Church persecuted those who proclaimed the truth of Jesus.


They banned people from reading the Bible, which was in Latin. They burned Bibles and tortured and killed those who had them.


They killed upwards of 100 million people, mostly Christians, during the Dark Ages and the Inquisition.

Then God shined the light of Jesus, by having the Bible translated into English.


With the advent of the printing press and the Word of God translated into English, the men who became the Protestant Reformers were finally able to read the Bible.

They found salvation through faith, apart from works, in the pure gospel of Jesus Christ.

And they identified the Antichrist.


When they read the books of Daniel and Revelation, they identified the Roman Catholic Church as the ‘antichrist‘, the ‘whore of Babylon’, who is guilty of the blood of the saints.

The Protestant Reformers taught that the 70th week of Daniel was fulfilled after the 69th week, when the everlasting Gospel was preached to the Jews for seven years.


Here’s the study notes from the Geneva Bible:

Daniel 9:26 And after threescore and two x weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but y not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.


(x) In this week of the seventy, will Christ come and preach and suffer death.


(y) He will seem to have no beauty, nor to be of any estimation; ( Isaiah 53:2 ).

Daniel 9:27 And he a shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to b cease, c and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make [it] desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.


(a) By the preaching of the Gospel he affirmed his promise, first to the Jews, and after to the Gentiles.


(b) Christ accomplished this by his death and resurrection.


(c) Meaning that Jerusalem and the sanctuary would be utterly destroyed because of their rebellion against God, and their idolatry: or as some read, that the plague will be so great, that they will all be astonished at them.

The Geneva Bible clearly witnesses that Jesus fulfilled the 70th week of Daniel, and that He sent the Roman army to desolate the Jews, so it has nothing to do with an end-times antichrist.


But the King James Bible did not include these study notes, so they were unavailable to future generations, which allowed the Jesuits deception to creep into the church.

Their dual message of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ apart from works, together with the message that Papal Rome is the Antichrist, changed the course of history.

When Martin Luther posted his ‘Ninety-Five Theses‘ in 1517, it was widely regarded as the initial catalyst for the Protestant Reformation.

The Protestant Reformers told people to “come out of her” (Rev. 18:4) and millions left the Roman Catholic Church and received Jesus as their Savior, which led to the formation of the Protestant churches.


The Protestant Reformation led to a Great Awakening, where worldwide missions led to millions of people coming to Jesus.

Satan no doubt was livid as he watched God spread His Holy Word and the saving Gospel around the world, so the deceiver devised a new plan.

The Roman Catholic Church empowered the Jesuits to counter the Reformation.


In 1545, they started meeting at what’s called the Council of Trent. One of its main purposes was to plan a counterattack against Martin Luther and the Protestants.

To do this they empowered the Jesuits, who were a secret Catholic order founded by Ignatius Loyola. They call themselves the Society of Jesus, but you’ll soon find out that they are the Society of Satan.

Their work was to be done not only through the Inquisition and through torture, but also through theology and deception.


The Catholic Church gave the Jesuits the specific assignment of bringing Protestantism back to the “Mother Church.” Look at the state of today’s liberal Lutheran church, and you know they’ve been successful.


Central to this plan, was the need to deflect accusations that they were the Antichrist beast system.

The Jesuits are a covert military order of the Roman Catholic Church, not just priests.


They use fifth column tactics to infiltrate every institution they seek to destroy.

Instead of attacking from the outside, where everyone can see them, they covertly attack from the inside.


The Jesuits infiltrate the very thing they wish to destroy. They’ve pretended to be Christians and have infiltrated Christian institutions, to implement their deceptionsinside the walls of Christianity.

They countered accusations by creating the concept of an end times 70th week of Daniel, featuring a one man Antichrist.

The Roman Catholic Church had Jesuit Priest Francisco Ribera, a brilliant man with a doctorate in theology, write a 500 page commentary with an opposing view, where he manipulated prophecies in the books of Daniel and Revelation, to create an end-time 7-year tribulation antichrist.


Ribera applied all of Revelation to the end time rather than to the history of the church.


His explanation was that the prophecies apply only to a single sinister man who will arise up at the end of time; instead of a beast, which the Bibles says is a powerful kingdom (the Roman Catholic Church).


He said that the Antichrist would be an infidel from outside the church of God; instead of someone who presents himself as Christ (the Pope, who calls himself theVicar of Christ).


He said that the Antichrist would make a 7-year peace agreement with the Jews.

The most important passage that they manipulated is the 70 Weeks of Daniel prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27.


They applied the 70th week of Daniel to an end times Antichrist, replacing the 7-year period of Jesus new covenant being offered to the house of Israel from 27-34 A.D.

These may be the four most important prophecy verses in all of the Bible, because of the end times deceptions that are based on them.

This idea, called Futurism, deferred accusations away from the Roman Catholic Church and the Papacy, so Rome quickly adopted this viewpoint as the Church’s official position on the Antichrist.


Prophecies in Daniel and Revelation tell us about the battle between Jesus and Satan throughout history, from the time they were written to Jesus second coming.


The ‘beast of Revelation‘, the ‘Little Horn of Daniel‘, the ‘son of Perdition’ and the ‘Babylonian Harlot,’ all apply to the history of the Antichrist Roman Catholic Church, who proclaims to be Christian, but has opposed true Christianity throughout their history. This is called Historicism.

Satan has used Jesuit controlled false prophets and misled Christians to promote the lie of Futurism.

Following close behind Francisco Ribera was another brilliant Jesuit scholar, Cardinal Robert Bellarmine of Rome.

Cardinal Bellarmine promoted Ribera’s concepts in his work “Polemic Lectures Concerning the Disputed points of the Christian Belief Against the Heretics of this Time“.


His writings claimed that Paul, Daniel, and John had nothing whatsoever to say about the Papal power. He taught that Antichrist was a single individual who would not rule until the very end of time.

His teachings won general acceptance among Catholics.

For almost 200 years after the Council of Trent, Jesuit futurism remained largely within Catholicism.

The Futurism of Ribera never posed a positive threat to Protestants worldwide for three centuries, and was virtually confined to the Roman Church.


Ribera’s manipulation of Biblical text was rejected for hundreds of years, by discerning students of the Bible, who knew better.

But the Jesuits persisted with their plan to cause the Protestants to adopt this doctrine.

In 1812 a Roman Jesuit priest named Manuel (sometimes Emmanuel) de Lacunza published the work ‘The Coming of Messiah in Glory and Majesty’ under the pen name of ‘Ben Ezra’.


The pseudonym may be seen as a way of making the work acceptable to Christian readers and diverting attention from the station of the author, as the Inquisition clearly taught Christians that Jesuits were the enemy.

In the early 1800’s their futurism concepts latched on to Protestants in the Established Church of England, and from there it spread to America.

The story of how this happened is both fascinating and tragic. Many individuals were genuine Christians but unknowingly became channels of error.

In the 19th century, Dr. Samuel Roffey Maitland advanced the Jesuit teachings.

Dr. Samuel Roffey Maitland, a lawyer and Bible scholar, became a librarian to the Archbishop of Canterbury. He found Ribera’s doctrines and began to widely publish and advocate these deceptive teachings.

In 1826 he published a book attacking the Reformation and supporting Ribera’s idea of a future one-man Antichrist. For the next ten years, in tract after tract, he continued his anti-Reformation rhetoric.


As a result of his zeal and strong attacks against the Reformation, the Protestantism of England—the very nation that produced the King James Bible in 1611—received a crushing blow.

James H. Todd published pamphlets and books supporting the Jesuit teachings.

James H. Todd, a professor of Hebrew at the University of Dublin, accepted the futuristic ideas of Maitland, publishing his own supportive pamphlets and books, which caused the deception to continue to spread.

Minister Edward Irving created the concept of the ‘secret rapture‘.


As the doctrine of futurism was spreading across Europe, the much-respected Scottish Presbyterian minister Edward Irving, the acknowledged forerunner of both the Pentecostal and charismatic movements, came onto the scene. Irving pastored the large Chalcedonian Chapel in London with over 1000 members.

When Irving turned to the prophecies, he eventually accepted the one-man Antichrist ideas of Manuel de Lacunza.


Irving translated Jesuit Priest Lacunza’s ‘The Coming of Messiah‘ into English and published it in English in 1827. It contains a lengthy ‘Preliminary Discourse’ written by Irving as a vehicle for his emerging views.

Around 1830, Edward Irving began to teach the unique idea of a two-phase return of Christ, the first phase being a secret rapture prior to the rise of the Antichrist.


The concept of the pre-tribulation rapture did not exist for 1800 years, until it was introduced by Irving, who was promoting the Jesuits end-times Antichrist deception.

John Henry Newman promoted the Jesuits concepts in England.


Then came John Henry Newman, a member of the Church of England and a leader of the famous Oxford Movement.

In 1850, Newman wrote his “Letter on Anglican Difficulties,” revealing that one of his goals in the Oxford movement was to absorb “the various English denominations and parties” back into the Church of Rome.


After publishing a pamphlet endorsing Todd’s futurism about a one-man Antichrist, Newman became a Roman Catholic, and later even a highly-honored cardinal.

A definite “Romeward movement was already arising, destined to sweep away the old Protestant landmarks, as with a flood.”

John Nelson Darby created the concept of Dispensationalism.

In the midst of this growing anti-Protestant climate in England arose John Nelson Darby – a brilliant lawyer, pastor, and theologian, who wrote more than 53 books on Bible subjects and is credited as the father of Dispensationalism.


Dispensationalism is the theory that God deals with mankind in major dispensations or periods.

John Nelson Darby, like Edward Irving, also became a strong promoter of a pre-tribulation rapture followed by a one-man Antichrist. In fact, his teaching has become a hallmark of dispensationalism.


John Nelson Darby laid much of the foundation for the present popular idea of removing Daniel’s seventieth week from its historical context in the time of Jesus Christ and applying it to a future tribulation after the rapture.

In spite of all the positives of his ministry, Darby followed Maitland, Todd, Bellarmine, and Ribera by incorporating the teachings of futurism into his theology.


Thus, a link was created between John Nelson Darby—the father of dispensationalism—and the Jesuit Francisco Ribera—the father of futurism.

Darby visited America six times between 1859 and 1874, preaching in all of its major cities, during which time he planted the seeds of futurism in American soil.

The Scofield Reference Bible established the deception in America.

One of the most important figures in the spread of these false doctrines is Cyrus Ingerson Scofield, a lawyer from Kansas who was greatly influenced by the writings of Darby.


In 1909, Scofield published the first edition of his famous ‘Scofield Reference Bible‘, which injected large doses of Futurism in the commentaries.

This Bible became so popular in American Protestant Bible schools that it was necessary to print literally millions of copies.


This was the beginning of the end of American Protestant Christianity and a proper exegetical understanding of prophecy and the Scripture.

The Scofield Study Bible was received by Congregationalists, Baptists, and some Presbyterian denominations.


Through the immensely popular Scofield Study Bible, dispensationalism became the standard for biblical interpretation among traditional Southern Baptists in the early twentieth century.

Through the Scofield Bible, Jesuit futurism spread successfully across America. The doctrine of an Antichrist still to come was becoming firmly established inside twentieth-century American Protestantism.

Arno C. Gaebelein promoted Scofield’s Jesuit Futurism concepts.

He was a close assistant to Scofield on his monumental work, the ‘Scofield Reference Bible‘.

Two of his books, “Revelation, and Analysis and Exposition” and “Current Events in the Light of the Bible” explain the dispensationalist view of eschatology.

Lewis Sperry Chafer brought Scofield’s teachings to the Dallas Theological Seminary.

Lewis Sperry Chafer, an American theologian, became associated with the ministry of Scofield, who became his mentor.

When Scofield died in 1921, Chafer moved to Dallas, Texas, to pastor the First Congregational Church of Dallas, where Scofield had ministered.

Then in 1924 Chafer and his friend William Henry Griffith Thomas realized their vision of a simple, Bible‐teaching theological seminary, when they founded Dallas Theological Seminary (originally Evangelical Theological College).

DTS is known as a center of modern Dispensational teaching due to Dr. Chafer’s development of a Scofield-based systematic theology which approaches the Bible with a “premillennial, dispensational interpretation of the Scriptures.”


His eight-volume work describing this approach to theology, “Systematic Theology“, was first published in 1948 and is still a required textbook for some courses at DTS.

Chafer’s theology has been the subject of much study and debate in and out of the theological community since his death, especially on the two larger topics of dispensationalism and Christian Zionism, specifically that the Jews are a people called unto God with a separate historical purpose and plan from Christians.

Dallas Theological Seminary is the key place where the Jesuit concepts were taught to thousands of Pastors, including today’s top TV and radio personalities.

DTS graduates have taken positions at other seminaries, Bible schools, denominations and churches, so that the infection of the Jesuits end time concepts have been spread throughout the church.

As of Fall 2011, DTS has nearly 14,000 alumni serving in various ministerial capacities in 97 countries worldwide, and they’ve been trained according to the Jesuits end times Antichrist deceptions.

After the death of Dr. Lewis Sperry Chafer, Dr. Walvoord became President of Dallas Theological Seminary and built it into a formidable graduate school of theology.

He was the editor of Bibliotheca Sacra, America’s oldest theological quarterly, was recognized as one of the leading evangelical theologians in America and an authority on systematic theology and eschatology.


He authored numerous books on theology and biblical prophecy, including “Daniel: The Key to Prophetic Revelation“, “The Rapture Question“, and “The Nations, Israel and the Church in Prophecy.”

John F. Walvoord teaches prophecy concepts that support the Jesuits end-time Antichrist deception.

Charles Caldwell Ryrie promoted futurism in his Ryrie Study Bible.


Charles Caldwell Ryrie served as professor of systematic theology and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary

He is the editor of The Ryrie Study Bible by Moody Publishers, which contains more than 10,000 of Dr. Ryrie’s explanatory notes.


Over 2 million of these Bibles have been sold, each one teaching the Jesuits end times deceptions.

Hal Lindsey brought the Jesuit deception to the mainstream.


He graduated from Dallas with a Master of Theology, majoring in the New Testament and early Greek literature

In the 1970s, Pastor Hal Lindsey, released his blockbuster book “The Late Great Planet Earth“.


His 177-page, easy-to-read volume brought Futurism to the masses of American Christianity, and beyond. Over 30 million copies have been sold and it’s available in over 30 languages.

Hal also embraced Dallas Theological Seminary founder Lewis Sperry Chafer’s theory that the Jews are a people called unto God with a separate historical purpose and plan from Christians.

Several of Lindsey’s books predicted the timing of the rapture, only to have the date come and go. Hal has been proven to be a False Prophet


His new program, ‘The Hal Lindsey Report‘, continues to teach the Jesuits end times concepts, and is carried on the Angel One and DayStar networks.

Chuck Swindoll and Insight For Living.


Chuck attended Dallas Theological Seminary, where he graduated magna cum laude.

In July 1994, Swindoll became the president of the Dallas Theological Seminary and now serves as its chancellor.


His Insight For Living radio program is broadcast on more than 2,000 stations around the world in 15 languages.


His series on Daniel and Revelation teaches the concepts of the Jesuits end times deceptions.

David Jeremiah and Turning Point Broadcast Ministries.


David Jeremiah received a Master’s degree from Dallas Theological Seminary.

He succeeded Tim LaHaye as Shadow Mountain’s senior pastor in 1981.


His Turning Point Ministries program is broadcast via radio stations and the Internet. His “What In the World is Going On?” prophecy series was recently broadcast to millions of people.

Ron Rhode holds ThM and ThD degrees from Dallas Theological Seminary, and teaches there and at several other seminaries.

The fulfillment of the 70th week of Daniel already occurred when Jesus offered a New Covenant to the house of Israel and the House of Judah.

John’s ‘Master’s Seminary‘ and ‘Grace Theological Seminary‘ both teach a Dispensational premillennial position in eschatology.

Their website says, “We teach the personal, bodily return of our Lord Jesus Christ before the seven-year tribulation.”


The anti-Christ reign in the 7 year tribulation and pre-trib rapture deception are based on the covenant of salvation in the Messianic 70 Week prophecy of Daniel 9:24 thru Daniel 9:27.

Begin's ultranationalist notions had made him a figure on the fringe for the first three decades of Israel's existence, but his Likud Party had finally come to power. Ironically, Begin won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1978, along with President Anwar Sadat of Egypt, for signing the Camp David Accords. Thanks to skillfully managed negotiations on the part of U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Begin agreed to return the Sinai desert to Egypt, but refused to discuss the Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza. And this is where our story begins - the same year that the Camp David Accords were signed. The late Grace Halsell, author of Prophecy and Politics, participated in two Falwell-led pilgrimages to Israel in 1983 and 1985, and quotes a fellow Christian pilgrim on the tour: "The Jews must own all of the land promised by God before Christ can return. The Arabs have to leave this land because this land belongs only to the Jews. God gave all of this land to the Jews." Lawrence Shafer, a businessman, moved to the settlement of Ariel for economic reasons. No, we're people who do not have enough money to afford to buy a flat. But we want to leave something to our children. We've always wanted to buy our own house. From the Middle East Information Center, the goal of the Jerusalem Prayer Team .. is to raise enough to give a gift of $55 apiece to 14,000 settlers. Eventually we hope [to raise money for all] 200,000. But the best we can do now is 14,000....From Bridges for Peace: Many Christians have felt this desire to reach out and help in the prophetic restoration of Israel, in a tangible way, by blessing individuals (new immigrants and veteran Israeli alike) with material gifts. Bridges for Peace has done just that. From Prophecy and Politics, 1986, about the American Christian Trust headed by Mrs. Bobi Hormas: "The trust enjoys 501(c)(3) status and receives funds from private individuals, estates and large evangelical-fundamentalist organizations. The Trust in turn gives this money to Israel, expressly for Jewish settlements in the West Bank. Mrs Hormas told me the Trust planned to raise a hundred million dollars to purchase land for Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the present target area being in the Palestinian town of Hebron... This I was told would help fulfill biblical prophesy. (p,170-171) Populating the Settlements: Funding Jewish Immigration to Israel In addition to buying land and subsidizing settlements, Christian Zionists have played a major role in supporting Jewish immigration from the former Soviet Republics to populate the settlements. From Donald Wagner: John Hagee, pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, Texas, announced in February 1997 that his church was donating over $1 million to Israel. Hagee claimed the funds would be used to help resettle Jews from the Soviet Union in the West Bank and Jerusalem. "We feel like the coming of Soviet Jews to Israel is a fulfillment of Biblical prophecy," Hagee stated. The Gratefully Grafted Ministries is one of the international organizations that supports immigration to Jerusalem and West Bank settlements through their Israel Fund: All funds are used toward serving the Body of Messiah in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, the Galilee and beyond .. Their ministry sponsors the Ebenezer Emergency Fund and Operation Exodus: From 1991 through the Fall of 2004, Ebenezer has brought more than 100,000 olim back to Israel. If their numbers are accurate, and if most of their "olim" end up in the settlements, they could have brought into the West Bank and Gaza Strip as much as 41% of the settlers. Christians for Israel is helping the Jews home to Israel from the former Soviet Union. This is an international project known as Operation Aliyah. It is more than just a humanitarian project - it is a divine calling for the Church to assist the Jewish people in their physical return and restoration of the land of Israel. Why does Operation Aliyah exist? In the fulfillment of Biblical Prophecy. The Jewish people were scattered throughout the nations according to God's word, because of their disobedience. God beckons to the gentiles to assist in the return of the Jewish people to Israel. Jeremiah prophesied that the return will be of greater magnitude than the exodus from Egypt and will involve all the tribes of Israel. This time they will remain in their land. I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God. Amos 9:15 Influencing Washington Akiva Eldar, journalist for the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz, claims that Christian Zionists are pouring money into Israel. "But that's not the only way they are supporting Israeli settlement of the West Bank." The most important thing is that they have so much influence in Washington, that they are so influential in the White House and in Congress. (Bill Moyer'sNOW, June 6, 2003.) Jerry Falwell told 60 Minutes: There are 70 million of us. And if there's one thing that brings us together quickly it's whenever we begin to detect our government becoming a little anti-Israel. Pastor John Hagee's Cornerstone Church raised $1 million dollars in 1977. When asked if he realized that support of Likud's policies and the increase in Jewish settlements was at cross-purposes with US policy, Hagee answered: I am a Bible scholar and a theologian, and from my perspective the law of God transcends the laws of the United States government and the US State Department. The Village Voice, May 18, 2004, documented that National Security Council Near East and North African Affairs director for President George W. Bush, Elliott Abrams, actually met with the Apostolic Congress, a dispensationalist organization, to discuss their theological concerns. Three weeks after that meeting President Bush reversed long-standing U.S. policy, endorsing Israeli sovereignty over parts of the West Bank in exchange for Israel's disengagement from the Gaza Strip. From Stephen Zunes, Foreign Policy In Focus, June, 2004: It appears, then, that right-wing Christian Zionists are, at this point, more significant in the formulation of U.S. policy toward Israel than are Jewish Zionists, as illustrated by three recent incidents. After the Bush administration's initial condemnation of the attempted assassination of militant Palestinian Islamist Abdel Aziz Rantisi in June 2003, the Christian Right mobilized its constituents to send thousands of e-mails to the White House protesting the criticism. A key element in these e-mails was the threat that if such pressure continued to be placed upon Israel, the Christian Right would stay home on Election Day. Within 24 hours, there was a notable change in tone by the president. Indeed, when Rantisi fell victim to a successful Israeli assassination in April 2004, the administration-as it did with the assassination of Hamas leader Sheik Ahmed Yassin the previous month-largely defended the Israeli action. When the Bush administration insisted that Israel stop its April 2002 military offensive in the West Bank, the White House received over 100,000 e-mails from Christian conservatives in protest of its criticism. Almost immediately, President Bush came to Israel's defense. Over the objections of the State Department, the Republican-led Congress adopted resolutions supporting Israel's actions and blaming the violence exclusively on the Palestinians. When President Bush announced his support for the Road Map for Middle East peace, the White House received more than 50,000 postcards over the next two weeks from Christian conservatives opposing any plan that called for the establishment of a Palestinian state. The administration quickly backpedaled, and the once-highly touted Road Map essentially died. The Tragedy of the Settlements Soon after the war of 1967, Israel's founding Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion, by that time retired, spoke to the Knesset, Israel's Parliament. His prophetic words were recorded by Jewish scholar Arthur Hertzberg in The Tragedy of Victory. Ben Gurion said: All of the territories that had been captured had to be given back, very quickly, for holding on to them would distort, and might ultimately destroy, the Jewish state. A delegation of United States church leaders visited Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, Israel, and Palestine in 2002. They declared: We emphasize the urgency of the crisis in the region and our sense that the Middle East and, indeed, the entire world, stands on the brink of a catastrophe if a comprehensive peace is not achieved soon. For Jews and Arabs living in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, life has become cycles of violence, fear and hatred. Much of the world has come to see Israel as an occupier nation, a perception that has isolated Israel in the United Nations and led to anti-semitism around the world. Amidst all the tensions created by the settlements, Jerry Falwell told 60 Minutes, "The Bible Belt in America is Israel 's only safety belt right now." Falwell and the movement he helped create have played a major role in supporting the construction and maintenance of the settlements. They helped bring tens of thousands of Eastern European Jews to Israel to increase the population of the settlements. They have made it politically risky for any American president to promote a peace plan. Because of their passion to see Israel permanently expand its borders, Christian Zionists have added fuel to the flames of anti-semitism worldwide. Their work has also served to isolate Israel, particularly in the United Nations. And then Falwell has the chutzpah to say, "The Bible Belt in America is Israel 's only safety belt right now." Esther Kaplan writes in The Nation, July 12, 2004, The Jewish Divide on Israel, that "American Jews are at least evenly split on how to secure Israel." Postmillennialism and Premillennialism Postmillennialists are not Christian Zionists. They are adherents of Christian Reconstructionism or Dominion Theology. They represent the most extreme constituency of the Religious Right. They are the activists who claim the United States is a "Christian nation," calling for the United States to return to Old Testament Biblical law. They don't believe in the rapture theory, or that we are living in the End Times before Christ returns. Leading Reconstructionist author, the late David Chilton, explains that the last days ended with the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D: the expression "the last days" and similar terms, are used in the Bible to refer, not to the end of the physical world, but to the last days of the nation of Israel, the "last days" which ended with the destruction of the temple in 70 A.D. (Paradise, p12) Gary North, a prolific Christian Reconstruction writer points out in The Unannounced Reason Behind American Fundamentalism's Support for the State of Israel: In order for most of today's Christians to escape physical death, two-thirds of the Jews in Israel must perish, soon. This is the grim prophetic trade-off that fundamentalists rarely discuss publicly, but which is the central motivation in the movement's support for Israel. It should be clear why they believe that Israel must be defended at all costs by the West. Postmillennialists believe that Christians must take domionion, or control over most of the secular institutions in the world in order for Christ to return. Therefore, they encourage Christians who share their biblical worldview to become politically active. From George Grant, a leading postmillennial writer in The Changing of the Guard , Biblical Principles for Political Action: Christians have an obligation, a mandate, a commission, a holy responsibility to reclaim the land for Jesus Christ -- to have dominion in civil structures, just as in every other aspect of life and godliness. But it is dominion we are after. Not just a voice. It is dominion we are after. Not just influence. It is dominion we are after. Not just equal time. It is dominion we are after. World conquest. That's what Christ has commissioned us to accomplish. We must win the world with the power of the Gospel. And we must never settle for anything less... Thus, Christian politics has as its primary intent the conquest of the land -- of men, families, institutions, bureaucracies, courts, and governments for the Kingdom of Christ. (pp. 50-51) Christian Zionists Are Premillenniallists Of the many theories about when Christ will return, the most popular is called premillennial dispensationalism. It is depicted in the best-selling Left Behind novels by the Reverend Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. Premillennialists believe that since God has a plan, the future is already set in motion. It might seem logical that if events taking place on earth are part of God's pre-ordained plan, then political activism is unnecessary. But the Reverend Tim LaHaye explains why Christians who share his Biblical worldview should be politically active. LaHaye named humanism as the great evil threatening to destroy America and coined the term "pre-tribulation tribulation" to characterize what will come about if humanists are allowed to take control of the government. In 1980 LaHaye published The Battle for the Mind where he asked, "Is a Humanist Tribulation Necessary?" LaHaye answered that the Great Tribulation, is predestined and will surely come to pass. But the pre-Tribulation tribulation -- that is the tribulation that will engulf this country if liberal humanists are permitted to take control of our government -- is neither predestined nor necessary. But it will deluge the entire land in the next few years, unless Christians are willing to become much more assertive in defense of morality and decency than they have been during the past three decades." (Battle for the Mind, 1980, pp. 217-218) Susan Friend Harding, a Professor of Anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, has published widely on fundamentalist Christianity. She wrote Chapter 3, Imagining the Last Days, the Politics of Apocalyptic Language in the fourth Volume of the Fundamentalism Project. The Fundamentalism Project was sponsored by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to study the rise of fundamentalism worldwide. The volumes are published by the University of Chicago Press. Harding writes: LaHaye urged Christians to pray and witness as usual and also to help the victims of humanism ... to join the national drive to register Christian voters ... to run for public office ... (pp. 69) [Falwell] argued that unless born-again Christians acted politically ... they would lose their ... [ability] to fulfill Biblical prophecy. (p. 70) In other words, political involvement is required to get raptured. While pre and post millennialism differs on the subject of Israel, adherents share similar political goals for the United States government: dominion by those Christians who share their Biblical worldview. People of both belief systems support political candidates who support their narrow theocratic agenda, and they oppose the secular government, or godless Constitution that our founders gave us. What does George W. Bush believe? It's not clear. Unlike former President Ronald Reagan, who talked openly about his fascination with Armageddon, President Bush has not mentioned the Rapture or Armageddon. His road map for peace calls for a Palestinian state -- something opposed by Christian Zionists. His domestic policies, however, are consistent with Dominion Theology. Christian Zionists unite in D.C. to express support for Israel

Prime Minister Netanyahu, speaking via satellite, and news commentator Glenn Beck encourage audience to think of themselves and Jews, Israelis, as one and the same.

Over 5000 Christians, mainly Evangelicals, gathered this week at the Convention Center in Washington for the annual conference of the organization CUFI, Christians United For Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the Christian Zionist conference via satellite, telling them, "When you support Israel, you don’t have to choose between your interests and your values; you get

The prime minister encouraged the conference attendees to not only think of Israel as an ally of the Unites States, but as indistinguishable from it. "Our enemies think that we are you, and that you are us," added Netanyahu. "And you know something? They are absolutely right."

Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren compared the participants' support of Israel to British military officer Orde Wingate’s training of Jewish paramilitary units before the establishment of the State of Israel. “We thank you for carrying out this vision,” Oren told the CUFI conference participants.

News commentator Glenn Beck worked the audience into a frenzy, decrying the historical persecution of Jews, insisting that Israel cannot cede control over territories it controls, and calling upon the conference attendees to declare that they, too, are Jewish.

"Jews have been chased out of every corner of this planet," said Beck. "Enough is enough." Beck said that new states can be established, but not at the expense of other states, and that Israel is historically the 'Land of the Jews', implying that Israel should not relinquish control over the West Bank in order to create a State of Palestine.

Beck repeated a refrain that Netanyahu had introduced earlier, appealing to audience members to self-identify as Israelis and Jews themselves. He exhorted, "When we see Israelis not as part of us, but as us, we can move to the next level as human beings," adding, "Let us declare 'I am a Jew,' they cannot kill all of us".

The conference attendees learned that Pastor John Hagee, the founder of CUFI, would be joining Beck for his planned rally in Jerusalem in August.

Hagee told the audience, many of whom were waving both Israeli and American flags, “We gathered here with one message: Israel today, Israel tomorrow, and Israel forever.” He added, “President Obama is no friend of Israel”.

“The truth is not what you think that it is – it’s what the Bible says”, Hagee proclaimed. “There are two ways to live your life – the Torah way and the wrong way."

"If the US Administration forces Israel to divide Jerusalem – God will turn his back to the United States of America. The G-d of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob is watching America," Hagee continued. "Mister President, go tell Russia and the Chinese what to do."

“Iran will soon become nuclear. Our President is waiting for Iran to extend a friendly hand, and it’s not going to happen," Hagee added. "Mister Ahmadinejad, don’t threaten Israel. What you do to the Jewish people, history proves, will be done to you.”

CAN ZIONISM BE CHRISTIAN?

The idea that Jews do not need the Gospel or conversion is sometimes subsumed under the title, “Christian Zionism,” although the designation can simply mean Christians who support Israel. The term “Christian Zionism” ends up being like Silly Putty. Each person makes what they wish out of it.

One must realize that the term Christian Zionist can cover a wide range of beliefs. Elwood McQuaid articulates the most benign and simplistic view this way:

“At its root, Zionism simply means a commitment to the inherent right of the Jewish people to have an internationally recognized homeland in the Middle East — the place referred to by Jews today as ‘Eretz Israel.’ Whether or not people consciously utter the word about themselves, if they accept the concept of a biblically endorsed Jewish right to the land, they are Zionists.”19

But there was a so-called Christian Zionism (which said Jews do not need Jesus or the New Covenant), championed in the 1970s by Franklin Littell in his book, The Crucifixion of the Jews. Littell went so far as to classify any who do not see Israel as the suffering servant redeemed under the Old Covenant alone, guilty of “theological Antisemitism”20 and “major sin.”21 And he labels dissenters of his view as nothing more than “heretics and apostates” and “illegitimate rather than authentic expressions of Christian preaching and teaching.”22 It is unfortunate that Littell was able to argue from the anti-semitic statements and ideas of Reformer Martin Luther.

Littell also summarized succinctly the core of this strain of Christian Zionism, reprinting the statement released by an ecumenical council in 1973. The pertinent sentences include:

“The singular grace of Jesus Christ does not abrogate the covenantal relationship of God with Israel (Romans 11:1-2). In Christ the Church shares in Israel’s election without superseding it.”23

In a very strange twist, the man most responsible for popularizing the “Two Covenant” view (in the 1920s and 1930s) was a Jewish thinker and author named Franz Rosenzweig. Much like Hagee does today, Rosenzweig attempted to create a rationale for not evangelizing Jews while leaving intact the viability, authenticity and acceptability of both Judaism and Christianity. Predating postmodernism but in postmodern fashion, Rosenzweig argued that Jews had their own subjective truth inside Judaism and Christians had their own subjective truth in Christ. Both were right, according to Rosenzweig.

As well, Rosenzweig taught that Jewish blood inherently gave all Jews shelter under the Old Covenant (the New Covenant being only for Gentiles), but John 1:12-13 asserts that only receiving Christ gives salvation and linkage to the family of God and that the salvation given is given to those “who were not born of blood. ... but of God.”

Rosenzweig’s ideas were a master stroke of accommodation, tolerance and ecumenicity but simply are not true to the New Testament. Arguments like Rosenzweig’s, we must remember, appeared at least in germ form in the second century with Trypho and were soundly refuted by Justin Martyr.24 Church history shows that even the first inklings of a double way of salvation were never tolerated by the Church. Early Christians only affirmed what they knew the Bible taught.

Nearly everyone who champions this “Two Covenant” idea since Rosenzweig, knowingly or unknowingly, repeats his arguments. In 1949, Rosenzweig’s “Two Covenant” view was seriously demolished by Jakob Jocz in his book, The Jewish People and Jesus Christ.25

Jocz was astute in pointing out that election under the Old Covenant was national, whereas under the New Covenant in the age of grace election is individual. This is the key to understanding the “Two Covenant” error. Individual Jews and individual Gentiles must accept God’s offer of salvation in Christ.

Jocz further explains:

“The profound difference between Paul and the Synagogue ultimately turned round the question of the meaning of ‘Jew’. To Paul, a Jew is not defined by race or tradition, but by the moral qualities which link him spiritually to Abraham ... Israel to Paul is not defined in terms of race or colour, but faith.”26

George Foot Moore rightly observes, “For this national election Paul and the church substituted an individual election to eternal life, without regard to race or station.”27

This idea of not evangelizing Jews may be gaining some popularity lately in the American Church. More recently, an organization calling itself Bridges for Peace, led the way drafting a pledge to not proselytize Jews and got 50 local Christian churches and groups ranging from Catholic to various mainstream Protestant denominations to sign on. The document was given to Israeli legislators.28
