White Collar Lies: Carlton Byrd’s Plagiarism and Adventism’s Culture of Credentialism

November 14, 2025|

A plagiarism scandal involving one of Adventism’s most prominent leaders has reignited debate over honesty and accountability in preaching and publishing. Carlton P. Byrd, president of the Southwest Region Conference and former speaker of Breath of Life Ministries, received public criticism after delivering a keynote sermon for Oakwood University’s (OU) presidential inauguration that closely mirrored a sermon by Baptist preacher Tolan Morgan.

The incident occurred on September 26, 2025, during the inauguration of Gina Spivey-Brown, OU’s 12th president and the first woman to hold the office. Byrd’s address—intended as a message of encouragement—borrowed heavily from Morgan’s 2020 sermon, “Why Did You Pick a Devil?” originally preached at Fellowship Bible Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia. Side-by-side comparisons shared online showed Byrd echoing Morgan’s phrasing, structure, and biblical illustrations almost verbatim.

Oakwood University Aeolians Win World Choir Title

Powered by Translate

Cheers and prayers of thanksgiving rang out in the United Kingdom and across North America as word quickly spread that the Oakwood University Aeolians Choir won the World Choir Title (Choir of the World) in the choral category during the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfo in Wales on July 8, 2017. The University also received a second award as Jason Ferdinand, the Aeolians' director, was named Outstanding Director of the World Choral Festival.

The competition, which started on July 3 and ended July 9, originally began in 1947 as a festival to celebrate the "Peace and Harmony" that showcases some of the world's greatest musical talents. According to the event's website, each year the International Musical Eisteddfod welcomes more than 4,000 performers, and as many as 50,000 visitors join the festival in the small Welsh town "to sing and dance in a unique combination of competition, performance, and international peace and friendship." The event culminated with the choral competition.

“On behalf of the entire Oakwood University community, we celebrate the success of the Oakwood University Aeolians on another history-making accomplishment," said Leslie N. Pollard, president of Oakwood University. "To be named Choir of the World at the international Welsh Eistefodd in Wales is a singular honor that represents the excellence of our university and the best of our Rocket City. Congratulations to the director, Dr. Jason Ferdinand, and especially our Oakwood University students. You have distinguished yourselves and made us proud and thankful once again.”

In a previous report from the university, the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod is described as "not merely an annual festival promoted by one nation for international audiences, but a festival of music-making in which representatives of the peoples of other nations can take an active part."

The winner of the Choir of the World competition receives the coveted Pavarotti Trophy and 3,000 euros (US$3439.42, current exchange rate).

In a press release, university representatives said, "We are proud of the Oakwood University's Aeolians for achieving success on the world stage and representing Oakwood University, Huntsville, and most importantly, God to the world."

While in the UK, the Aeolians also performed at other venues in London, Birmingham, and Manchester.

Holy Spirit Disrupts Adventist Pastors’ Meeting

Organizers forced to change ministerial training program at Oakwood University

POSTED DECEMBER 8, 2016

“A God opportunity that I have hungered after for 40 years,” said Ben Jones, president of the South Central Conference, and chair of the Tuesday morning, December 6, devotional session where Pastor Tricia Wynn-Payne of Indiana had challenged her congregation to “Wait for It.”

As many as 1,000 attendees heard Pastor Wynn-Payne speak from Acts 1:4, where the resurrected Jesus commanded His disciples to “wait for the promise of the Father.” “Powerful,” said Anthony Medley, pastor of the Emmanuel Brinklow congregation in Ashton, Maryland. And Pastor Lola Moore said, “It was obvious that spiritual warfare took place before. We become overwhelmed by the enormity of the assignment and turn inward to focus on our skills set. But it was evident to me that the preacher took her own words seriously: she waited for it. She waited for the Holy Spirit to do His work in her.” Her ministry gave “unmistakable” evidence of “God’s handiwork,” said Jesse Wilson, director of the Pastoral Evangelism and Leadership Council [PELC], a ministerial training program that meets annually at Oakwood University.

“The Holy Spirit showed up and took us by surprise.”

The results were spiritually stunning. “Pastor Tricia disrupted everything,” one attendee said; “The Holy Spirit showed up and took us by surprise.” Pastor Wynne-Payne herself, a trained physical therapist who left her nets in response to God’s call to pastoral ministry, says that she is still processing what happened yesterday. The message and worship experience so disrupted the proceedings that organizers spontaneously invited those who were interested to gather in one of the meeting rooms to pray. The next meeting scheduled for that room was long delayed as the prayer session continued for more than an hour. One after another, with no pause between prayers, pastors, administrators, and lay people lifted their voices and hearts to God in confession of sin, surrender to the Spirit’s will, and pleas for His anointing in their lives as well as His church’s program here on earth at the end of time.

As Elder Jones made final remarks and the solemn yet thrilling spiritual experience drew to its close, someone offered a comment that was pregnant with allusion to the historical experience that inspired Pastor Wynn-Payne’s sermon [see Acts 1:15]: he had counted the number of people in the room—not a straightforward task, since people were crowded in against the walls and squeezed into corners. Nevertheless, he wanted it to be known that about 120 individuals had been praying in the room.
