AI chatbots face major backlash over left-wing bias: ‘Can no longer be considered neutral and cannot be trusted’

Artificial intelligence chatbots are relying on left-wing media and politically charged sources, making it difficult for the average American to trust them as a news source, critics say.

AI systems are widely known to sometimes “hallucinate” and generate false yet believable information that can quickly erode trust.

Some critics insist chatbots such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude provide information with a liberal slant, or push information from left-leaning news sources while silencing opposing views.

As more and more Americans rely on the technology, the right-leaning Media Research Center (MRC) has conducted studies in an attempt to determine if the chatbots should be relied upon — and they don’t find the results encouraging.


“We’re watching the next phase of media bias unfold in real time,” Media Research Center President David Bozell told Fox News Digital.

“Silicon Valley’s shiny new toys can no longer be considered neutral and cannot be trusted.”

ChatGPT, which is developed by OpenAI, insisted in January that nobody named Charlie Kirk was ever assassinated and declared no credible evidence or reporting could substantiate such a claim, according to the MRC.

That same month, the MRC reported that Claude, which is developed by Anthropic, rejected the notion that AI should directly incorporate the US First Amendment into its policies.

“Social media. It’s just a tool, right? It is not bad in and of itself. The issue is how you use it.” But what if social media and cultural influences are having a greater impact than we realize?

We have all been there. Seconds turn into minutes, minutes turn into hours, and down the inevitable rabbit hole we go. We fall into a digital information and social spiral that takes us places we never thought we would go, landing in a foreign metaverse. We spend vast amounts of time on clicks, videos, articles, and reels, ending up in an unknown realm. Everything looks the same but feels very different. Sometimes we come out feeling discombobulated and other times we come out feeling empowered and enlightened. Most Generation Z teens (born between 1999 and 2015), many of whom are in middle school and high school, take this journey multiple times a day.

The Battle of the Mind

The primary battle zone resides in the mind. This makes sense, as the mind is the communicator and controller of all aspects of our bodies. Control the mind, control the body. In Genesis 3, Satan proposed a thought of doubt or distorted truth. The serpent said, “Did God really say?” Eve confirmed the statement, but Satan replied, “You will not certainly die.” It was at this moment Eve shifted from a foundation of truth to a foundation of a perversion of truth. “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened” (Genesis 3:1-7, New International Version).

Is this not the same spiritual war we are facing today? Satan’s conniving ways have not changed. Teens are engulfed in a culture and landscape the Barna Research Group describes as “Digital Babylon.” This is where we find ourselves as we attempt to make disciples of teens who will also make disciples.

When we think of spiritual warfare, the spectrum can run from subtle questioning of truth to the extremes of demonic possession and Satan worship. All are prominent in our culture and world. We need to be prepared to face all fronts. But the broader, more detrimental impact on our teens today is psychological manipulation through social media platforms. Here is where culture, politics, fluidity of truth, pornography, misinformation, greed, and so much more collide.

India’s central bank to launch digital rupee pilot

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is stepping towards initiating a digital rupee pilot and indicating key features in the central bank digital currency (CBDC), according to a 50-page report released on Friday.

The Indian central bank says it will launch a pilot Digital Rupee program “soon,” and will communicate about its features and benefits “from time to time.” Some key features, however, have been cautiously revealed.

The report distinguishes between retail and wholesale use cases, for consumers and for bank-to-bank transfers, and suggests that both may be introduced.

It also discusses several issuing models, especially one where a wholesale CBDC would be account-based and issued by the central bank, while the CBDC for consumers would be token-based and managed by an intermediary.

Additionally, RBI calls for “reasonable anonymity for small value transactions” to stick to a non-interest-bearing coin that resembles physical cash.

The technology behind the digital rupee is not yet set in stone. The RBI is leaving the door open to adapt to the decentralized technology as it evolves.

The report explores different possibilities and aims to raise awareness about CBDCs, with “compelling reasons” that make a national digital currency “as attractive as cash if not more.” However, the concept note is also wary of the risks and seeks to take on the pilot program step by step.

Digital Identity Makes Headway Around the World

The US is lagging behind the digital ID leaders.


As our real lives and online lives become increasingly intertwined, the old ways of authenticating identity are failing us. An alarming trend of identity theft with government transactions has been gaining steam in recent years; tax fraud jumped as much 50% in one year, for example. Aiming to streamline government services and improve security, many countries are taking steps to implement digital identities. India, Japan, and the EU are all at the forefront of these efforts, but cultural differences might be standing in the way of the US catching up. Let's take a closer look at the progress these countries have made.

Identity in India

India's relatively new Aadhaar program verifies each citizen's identity with a unique random number, only recording demographic and basic biometric data. Aadhaar is meant to support public sector delivery reforms and help manage fiscal budgets, as well as increase access to government services, particularly for the underprivileged. Technically, Aadhaar is optional, but recent laws have made possession of an Aadhaar number a requirement to open a bank account and make large transactions. India has a population of 1.311 billion, and no other government has yet rolled out a digital identity program on the scale of Aadhaar.

Centralizing Services in Japan

My Number, Japan's digital identity program, automatically assigns citizens a number whether they want one or not. The number is necessary to get public healthcare and other benefits, and employers are required to collect workers' numbers.

While India's Aadhaar does not record income and other personal information, the goal of My Number is to "ascertain people's income more accurately, leaving no room for wrongdoing such as tax evasion and illicit receipt of social benefits." Whether medical information will be tied to My Number IDs is, according to the Cabinet Office, "under review."

With My Number, government agencies can quickly share information about individuals without having to reach out to multiple sources, which comes across as more intrusive than Aadhaar's stated purpose of providing citizens with convenience and supporting the disenfranchised. However, the My Number website does claim the program promotes a "fairer and more just society" and enables government to provide "fine-tuned assistance to those who really need it." The departure from the old decentralized ID system still promises to make life simpler for citizens.

Estonia Leads the EU
Estonia's national ID program is considered by some to be the most comprehensive in the world. A mandatory chip card is embedded with files that are encrypted with a 2,048-bit public key, allowing the cards to serve as definitive proofs of identity online. The card gives online access to government and private services like healthcare and banking and can even be used to pay for public transportation and vote in elections. You don't have to be a citizen to receive an identity card, either, which helps encourage foreigners to bring business to Estonia.

While Estonia has taken the concept of digital identity further than any other country, the conditions are unique: it's a small nation with only 1.3 million residents and a highly homogeneous population. Further, Estonia rebuilt its infrastructure from the ground up after regaining independence in 1991 and has since been a technology leader in the EU.

In addition, Estonia has proven to be an ideal laboratory for both the benefits and potential pitfalls of digital IDs. In 2017, it found that the most recent update of its ID cards presented serious security vulnerabilities. And although no identities were apparently stolen, the incident emphasized that when one relies so completely on digital IDs, security needs to be bulletproof.

The Skeptical States
Founded on the very basis of a freer government, the notion of a national verification system in the US goes against our moral fabric. Then again, our culture today prizes convenience.

We've already seen that people are willing to trade their privacy for free email addresses and data storage, without considering what the provider gains from giving away a service that is costly to operate. While convenience often trumps hidden costs for Americans, the leap from free email in exchange for browsing history to federal ID associated with real-life activities may be too broad. When federal ID cards have been suggested in recent years, the outcry around federal intrusion into privacy has quickly squashed any movement in that direction. Ironically, this is the same citizenry that has readily handed over its email accounts, social media pages, and banking information to Google, Facebook, and Apple.

People who receive government benefits, such as SNAP, WIC, or disability payments, can easily be prompted into accepting a federal digital identity; recipients won't really have a choice if their payments are tied to their digital identities. Those who do not receive federal or state monies may refuse to participate in any federal identity programs, but upcoming generations are unlikely to have the same objection.

"Digital natives" expect free services and understand that their data is tracked but view the exchange as either benign or unavoidable. In a world of CCTV and doxing, privacy can seem like a pipedream. While today's graying Americans may not like the idea of digital identities, generational attitudes are opening the door for them in the future.

Balancing Privacy and Security Won't Be Easy
Digital identities aren't going to be optional or novel for long. What remains unseen is how governments will toe the fine line between making us safer and creating a surveillance state, and each country's decisions will hinge on its culture. As individuals with voting power, we should remain informed about efforts around digital identity and consider how much of our privacy we're willing to trade for the promise of security. Achieving a balanced solution is necessary for managing the digitized lives we're already living.

Susan* bought her 6-year-old son John an iPad when he was in first grade. “I thought, ‘Why not let him get a jump on things?’ ” she told me during a therapy session. John’s school had begun using the devices with younger and younger grades — and his technology teacher had raved about their educational benefits — so Susan wanted to do what was best for her sandy-haired boy who loved reading and playing baseball.

She started letting John play different educational games on his iPad. Eventually, he discovered Minecraft, which the technology teacher assured her was “just like electronic Lego.” Remembering how much fun she had as a child building and playing with the interlocking plastic blocks, Susan let her son Minecraft his afternoons away.

At first, Susan was quite pleased. John seemed engaged in creative play as he explored the cube-world of the game. She did notice that the game wasn’t quite like the Legos that she remembered — after all, she didn’t have to kill animals and find rare minerals to survive and get to the next level with her beloved old game. But John did seem to really like playing and the school even had a Minecraft club, so how bad could it be?

Still, Susan couldn’t deny she was seeing changes in John. He started getting more and more focused on his game and losing interest in baseball and reading while refusing to do his chores. Some mornings he would wake up and tell her that he could see the cube shapes in his dreams.

The Cashless Society Cometh: European Nations Such As Sweden And Denmark Are ‘Eradicating Cash’

Did you know that 95 percent of all retail sales in Sweden are cashless? And did you know that the government of Denmark has a stated goal of “eradicating cash” by the year 2030? All over the world, we are seeing a relentless march toward a cashless society, and nowhere is this more true than in northern Europe. In Sweden, hundreds of bank branches no longer accept or dispense cash, and thousands of ATM machines have been permanently removed. At this point, bills and coins only account for just 2 percent of the Swedish economy, and many stores no longer take cash at all. The notion of a truly “cashless society” was once considered to be science fiction, but now we are being told that it is “inevitable”, and authorities insist that it will enable them to thwart criminals, terrorists, drug runners, money launderers and tax evaders. But what will we give up in the process?

In Sweden, the transition to a cashless society is being enthusiastically embraced. The following is an excerpt from a New York Times article that was published on Saturday…


Parishioners text tithes to their churches. Homeless street vendors carry mobile credit-card readers. Even the Abba Museum, despite being a shrine to the 1970s pop group that wrote “Money, Money, Money,” considers cash so last-century that it does not accept bills and coins.

Few places are tilting toward a cashless future as quickly as Sweden, which has become hooked on the convenience of paying by app and plastic.

To me, giving money in church electronically seems so bizarre. But it is starting to happen here in the United States, and in Sweden some churches collect most of their tithes and offerings this way


During a recent Sunday service, the church’s bank account number was projected onto a large screen. Worshipers pulled out cellphones and tithed through an app called Swish, a payment system set up by Sweden’s biggest banks that is fast becoming a rival to cards.

Other congregants lined up at a special “Kollektomat” card machine, where they could transfer funds to various church operations. Last year, out of 20 million kronor in tithes collected,more than 85 percent came in by card or digital payment.

And of course it isn’t just Sweden that is rapidly transitioning to a cashless society. Over in Denmark, government officials have a goal “to completely do away with paper money” by the year 2030


Sweden is not the only country interested in eradicating cash. Its neighbor, Denmark, is also making great strides to lessen the circulation of banknotes in the country.

Two decades ago, roughly 80 percent of Danish citizens relied on hard cash while shopping. Fast forward to today, that figure has dropped dramatically to 25 percent.

“We’re interested in getting rid of cash,” said Matas IT Director Thomas Grane. “The handling, security and everything else is expensive; so, definitely we want to push digital payments, and that’s of course why we introduced mobile payments to help this process.”

Eventually, establishments may soon have the right to reject cash- a practice that is common in Sweden. Government officials have set a 2030 deadline to completely do away with paper money.

Could you imagine a world where you couldn’t use cash for anything?

This is the direction things are going – especially in Europe.

As I have written about previously, cash transactions of more than 2,500 euros have already been banned in Spain, and France and Italy have both banned all cash transactions of more than 1,000 euros.

Little by little, cash is being eradicated, and what we have seen so far is just the beginning. 417 billion cashless transactions were conducted in 2014, and the final number for 2015 is projected to be much higher.

Banks like this change, because it enables them to make more money due to the fees that they collect from credit cards and debit cards. And governments like this change because electronic payments enable them to watch, track and monitor what we are all doing much more easily.

These days, very rarely does anyone object to what is happening. Instead, most of us just seem to accept that this change is “inevitable”, and we are being assured that it will be for the better. And no matter where in the world you go, the propaganda seems to be the same. For example, the following comes froman Australian news source


AND so we prepare to turn the page to fresh year — 2016, a watershed year in which Australia will accelerate towards becoming a genuine cashless society.

The cashless society will be a new world free of $1 and $2 coins, or $5 or $10 bank notes. A new world in which all commercial transactions, from buying an i-pad or a hamburger to playing the poker machines, purchasing a newspaper, paying household bills or picking up the dry-cleaning, will be paid for electronically.

And in that same article the readers are told that Australia will likely be “a fully cashless society” by 2022…

Research by Westpac Bank predicts Australia will be a fully cashless society by 2022 — just six years away. Already half of all commercial payments are now made electronically.

Even in some of the poorest areas on the entire globe we are seeing a move toward a cashless society. In 2015, banks in India made major progress on this front, and income tax rebates are being considered by the government as an incentive “to encourage people to move away from cash transactions“.

Would a truly cashless society reduce crime and make all of our lives much more efficient?

Maybe.

But what would we have to give up?

To me, America is supposed to be a place where we can go where we want and do what we want without the government constantly monitoring us. If people choose to use cashless forms of payment that is one thing, but if we are allrequired to go to such a system I fear that it could result in the loss of tremendous amounts of freedom and liberty.

And it is all too easy to imagine a world where a government-sponsored form of “identification” would be required to use any form of electronic payment. This would give the government complete control over who could use “the system” and who could not. The potential for various forms of coercion and tyranny in such a scenario is obvious.

What would you do if you could not buy, sell, get a job or open a bank account without proper “identification” someday? What you simply give in to whatever the government was demanding of you at the time even if it went against your fundamental beliefs?

That is certainly something to think about.

Many will cheer as the world makes a rapid transition to a cashless society, but I will not. I believe that a truly cashless system would open the door for great evil, and I don’t want any part of it.

The Politics of HDTV in the United States

Policies adopted by the United States government between 1987 and 1993 regardinghigh definition television (HDTV) were made primarily by the Federal Communica-tions Commission (FCC). A brief effort by members of Congress and their bureaucratic and industrial allies to link HDTV to broader industrial policies was thwarted by the George Bush Administration between 1988 and 1990. The FCC's policies with respect to simulcasting and digital signals reflected the concern of that agency to protect the interests of consumers, broadcasters, and electronics manufacturers. The first two interests traditionally were protected bythe FCC, whereas the protection of electronics was somewhat unusual and was influenced by perceptions of declining United States competitiveness. In addition, United States policymaking in this area depended strongly on the framing effect of
policies adopted in Japan and Western Europe.


Introduction

The politics of high definition television (HDTV) provides a window into the world of business-government relations in a new international economic environment of intense competition among the advanced industrial nations.  HDTV involves a set of advanced technologies that arise out of a growing convergence between entertainment television and digital electronics. These new technologies include new types of advanced semiconductors, high-resolution displays, and digital recording and transmission technolo-gies.

The public unveiling of working HDTV technologies by the Japanese public broadcaster NHK (Nippon Hoso Kyokai) in 1981 was a shock to the global broadcasting, television, and electronics industries. Japan appeared to be far in front of the rest of the world in what many saw as a set of critical new technologies not just for consumer electronics but for information technology in general.

In the 1960s and 1970s, there was a rapid retreat of United States firms from consumer electronics markets under intense competition from Japan. The United States consumer electronics industry was in a very weak position in the early 1980s. As a result.the United States semiconductor industry was having increased difficulty competing with the larger and more integrated Japanese electronics concerns. When the European Commu-nity reacted negatively in 1986 to a Japanese effort to have its version of HDTV technology recognized as an international standard, many Americans in information technology industries looked to the United States government to respond with special industrial policies for HDTV. Why such policies were proposed, but for the most part not adopted, in the United States is one of the questions to be addressed here.


What is HDTV?


HDTV differs from the current generation of televisions by doubling the horizontal and vertical resolution of video images, and by providing a wider screen and digital stereosound.
Wider screens and digital sound are included in the practical definition of HDTV because market studies indicated that these have strong appeal to consumers. The high Policy Studies Journal, 22:2 definition part of HDTV is more important than wider screens and digital sound technologi-cally, however, because adequate handling of high definition images requires a greater advance in technology.

Definition in television refers to the sharpness, or resolution, of the picture transmitted and received. Potential resolution is affected by the number of horizontal lines scanned onto the video screen, which is why one sees "number of lines" featured in advertisements for many new TV products. Actual vertical and horizontal resolution is measured directly using a test pattern to determine what degree of detail can be displayed on a TV monitor. Actual resolution may vary widely for monitors with the same number of scanning lines. The monitors used in TV studios, for example, display much sharper images than one can get on a TV set at home, partly because they are more expensive and
higher quality devices, but also because they are not subject to the errors and distortions introduced in the transmission of TV signals.

The two main standards families in color TV today, NTSC (the American standard) and PAL/SECAM (the European standards), have 525 and 625 scanning lines respectively.'
Another difference between the two systems is the number of fields displayed per second: in NTSC it is 59.94, in PAL/SECAM only 50. The maximum theoretical resolution of an NTSC image is 360 by 360 pixels; 2 PAL/SECAM resolution theoretically can be higher because of the greater number of scanning lines. The greater frequency of fields per secondof NTSC cuts down on various artifacts, however, such as flicker and moird effects. HDTV production cameras will have 700 or more scanning lines and HDTV images will have atheoretical resolution of at least 700 by 700 pixels. This makes the theoretical horizontal and vertical resolution of HDTV sets at least double that of NTSC or PAL/SECAM sets.

We are Being Pulled Into the Matrix Like Never Before

Technology has enabled modern mankind to enjoy a lifestyle that our ancestors could only dream of. Countless numbers of science fiction writers have warned for decades about the negative side to our advancing technology. Every new technology invented has the capacity to be used for the benefit or destruction of mankind. Even technologies originally intended for good can be misused.

Could many of our society’s ills be connected to our over dependency on technology? Is the answer, as transhumanist leader Ray Kurzweil says, to simply merge with it? If we do, will our humanity still be in-tact?

Let’s take a look at some statistics.

According to a 2010 LA Times report, young people spend on average 53 hours a week watching TV, playing video games, and sitting at the computer.

Facebook users spend about 15 hours a month on the social networking site.

People are walking – and driving – blindly while texting, sometimes walking into fountains and even falling off cliffs.



A literal matrix is being built around us. It hasn’t snatched all of us up yet, but there are warning signs everywhere. The food we eat is increasingly synthetic. Much of the news we watch has been shown to be a total fabrication. The virtual world offers endless hours of entertainment, pressing buttons in our brains to make us come back for more even when we don’t want to. It even offers virtual mates that some men end up finding more pleasurable than their real partners.

We are paying a high price for misusing technology. A recent study from Harvard found that sperm counts in men who watched around 20 hours of TV a week were 44 percent lower than normal.

Other technologies are also impacting our bodies. A UCLA study has shown that the internet is in fact re-wiring our brains. Dr. Gary Small, director of UCLA’s Memory and Aging Research Center stated that, “A young person’s brain, which is still developing, is particularly sensitive. … It’s also the kind of brain that is most exposed to the new technology.”

The New Atlantis publication has called our technological society an “age of egocasting.” Personalized entertainment, and even personalized search engine results, are enabling us to engineer our information and entertainment environments to our liking. An endless Pandora’s box of entertainment is at our finger tips.

Within the digital world a new gold mine has been discovered by marketing firms and advertisers. Data is the new oil of the 21st century. They rely on internet browsers and cooperating websites to track users activity to create detailed psychological profiles. Google has announced that it will use microphones in personal computers and cell phones to listen for ambient background noise. AI programs will target them with specialized ads based on what it hears.

Futurist Gerd Leonhard spoke to technology and business leaders in Paris last year. He warned them not to “kill the golden goose” that is the general public willingly providing personal data. He warned that they should not make them think that “…they are always watched by us” or they will “kick us out.” The question is, how many people are willing to sacrifice “convenience” for privacy? What will we do when we can “sell” our data in the form of a retinal scan or other biometric information into our TV for free content?

We have a great challenge ahead of us during this era of unprecedented technological advancement. Increasingly, those who “opt out” of this matrix will find it more difficult to function in society. A 2010 report from the United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense touched on this subject. Ultimately, as stated in the paper, it may become difficult to “turn the outside world off,” and “…Even amongst those who make an explicit life-style choice to remain detached, choosing to be disconnected may be considered suspicious behaviour.” Already, employers are making it clear that those without Facebook profiles are to be deemed “suspicious.”

By 2040 – and likely before then – many futurists and scientists are projecting that technology will have advanced exponentially, bringing the much anticipated “singularity” closer. The MoD hints at some of these possible developments, including the emergence of an internet of things, radical life extension technology, and surveillance of personnel via mood sensing devices.

Computing will become pervasive everywhere in the environment. According to the report, “The virtual networks will consist of communications servers linkingindividuals and objects, many of which will be networked through individual Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.”

On the international front, the Council for Europe and EU Countries are hosting the 5th International Computers, Privacy & Data Protection Conference (CPDP) entitled, "European Data Protection: Coming of Age," in Brussels. I Spent a Coin (and I Liked It) — How I Bought Lunch With Bitcoins

Some claim that the unregulated digital currency known as Bitcoin is imaginary, or a Ponzi scheme. I have a different perspective, because last week I used it to pay for a hummus platter with olives in midtown Manhattan.

It began when someone sent me a Fortune article, “The Clock Is Ticking on Bitcoin." The article was mainly full of gloom and doom about the future of Bitcoin, an encrypted digital currency that can be transferred between users without any involvement from banks or governments. But it also happened to alert me to the existence of Meze Grill, a restaurant near Columbus Circle that accepts both U.S. dollars and bitcoins.

I decided to hop over to Meze Grill — "where authentic Mediterranean food meets modern flavor" — with my laptop in hand. The restaurant sports a rather professional-looking “Bitcoin Accepted Here” sign in the window. My conversation with the man behind the counter began awkwardly:

“I heard that you take ... bitcoins here ... as a way of paying for food,” I said.

“Oh,” he said, looking confused. “Ask him about that,” he added and pointed to the restaurant owner, who was sitting at a table explaining Bitcoin to another employee.

I walked up to them. “Excuse me,” I said, “I heard you accept bitcoins here?”

“Yes, of course,” the owner replied, nonchalantly. What kind of restaurant did I think this was — of course they accept bitcoins!

The owner calculated the current exchange rate, which has fluctuated wildly in recent months amid rampant hype about Bitcoin. My lunch was $5.51 plus tax: I owed him 0.52 bitcoins.

He held up an enormous laminated QR code the size of an entire sheet of paper, which I scanned on my phone yielding: bitcoin:1MTbKpYWnzqmsLvCjdTtwrvuX81g3HCgC. This was the address where I would send the money. Using my laptop, I opened up my account on the Mt. Gox Bitcoin exchange market, sent 0.52 bitcoins to 1MTbKpYWnzqmsLvCjdTtwrvuX81g3HCgC, and about three minutes later the restaurateur received an e-mail indicating that the coins had arrived.

The entire transaction was anonymous — we didn't know each other's names or any other identifying details. Incidentally, I'm keeping my name anonymous in accord with that feature.

While we were waiting for the transaction to clear, the Meze owner and I talked about how much nicer it would be if I could send the transaction directly from my phone. As if on cue, a young man I’d prefer to remember as wearing a trench coat, mirrored sunglasses, and with slicked-back hair walked in with his entourage. I knew why he was there even before he began inquiring about Meze Grill’s Bitcoin support.

The young man said he was a blogger and Android app developer, and he was hoping to make it easy to make a Bitcoin transaction from a phone. He bought lunch for his friends.

Feeling satisfied as I enjoyed my lunch, I remembered how many people I’ve heard continue to call Bitcoin an outright scam. I had just used it in a retail point-of-sale transaction and got a tasty meal, on the basis of nothing more than a cryptographic signature telling everyone on the Bitcoin network to consider the Meze Grill the new owner of my half of a virtual coin.

Bitcoins are not really imaginary, or at least no more so than the bits the traders down on Wall Street are signing over to each other all day long, the ones that encumber quantities of corn and wheat that haven’t been grown yet. Bitcoin is an experiment, which will probably fail at some point for reasons other people have already enumerated, and that’s fine. We’ll have learned an enormous amount from it.

All fiat currency gets its value from psychology and various institutional arrangements. That’s true of the currency in your wallet right now. There are tremendous resources that could be brought to bear to defend the value of the U.S. dollar. There isn't much to defend the value of a bitcoin once something goes awry, as it almost inevitably will. But I have no patience for theories that say that I couldn’t possibly have bought lunch with my half a bitcoin or that the restaurant was crazy to accept it. It was a delicious thrill; I suggest you go down to Columbus Circle and try it for yourself.

The most amazing part of the entire transaction at the Meze Grill was not the QR code or the military-grade cryptography, but the offhand composure of the restaurant owner when he said that of course his restaurant accepts bitcoins. Maybe the dividing line between a "real" currency and an "imaginary" one is how nervous you get asking if a business will accept it, and the eagerness of the business to say yes.

Invasion of the Electronic Mind Snatchers

American children are even more plugged in to new technology than ours – and are paying the price as electronic gadgets prove more addictive than heroin, says Hal Crowther. Will this digital obsession destroy the creativity of future generations?

The other day, I found myself reading the back-to-school edition of The New York Times’ Circuits section with my usual stunned incomprehension and a heightened sense of alarm. The electronic gadgets that have become standard equipment for a 21st-century undergraduate bear generic names, brand names, acronyms, model and serial numbers (DVP-CX995? PIXMA MP760?) that no doubt mean something to many, but nothing whatsoever to me. A Times reporter interviewed a Duke University undergraduate named Eddy Leal, who confessed to owning three laptops with multifarious accessories (“It’s like another world in my dorm room”) as well as, of course, a cellphone and a 500-song iPod which are, he says, “with me no matter where I am – I wouldn’t mind if I could have them implanted in my body”.

“I know, it’s kind of crazy,” said Leal of his three-computer installation, guessing that he was eccentrically overwired – but guessing wrong. Other students in this same article boasted even more bewildering batteries of personal hardware, far beyond my vocabulary to describe. Returning college students in the United States now spend more than $8 billion to rewire themselves, two thirds of what they’ll spend on textbooks, and of course each year the gap decreases.

The long-term implications of mechanised education are overwhelming, but first let’s deal with the subject of silence. I’m not ancient, yet my college education 40-plus years ago was pretechnological, by current lights antediluvian. Though telephones and television had been invented, none of us, not even the most affluent, had installed them in our rooms, far less on our bodies. My fraternity house contained one of each, a battered basement television set with a small clientele and a payphone next to which we waited for hours, playing cards and drinking beer and coffee, for our turns to call home or plead our cases with girls.

Cellphones and email had not yet made their appearance in science fiction. Ninety-eight per cent of communication was verbal and face-to-face. If you had an urgent message for someone, you stuffed a note in his box at the student union or trudged half a mile across an icebound campus and hoped you’d find him in. Only juniors and seniors were allowed to drive cars.

Winter or summer, that was a lonely walk, silent, a time to think without threat of interruption. Blessedly disconnected. “Alone with his thoughts”, now a literary anachronism, was a commonplace reality. Without that freedom to disconnect, then and now, I for one would have gone mad. And at this point most readers under 45 may disconnect. How could Eddy Leal understand that if a cellphone and an iPod were implanted in my body, I’d pay virtually any price to have them removed?

Computers and allied technologies have created the most intimidating generation gap in human history, one so wide and so rapidly created that I stand staring across the chasm like an aborigine watching Krakatoa split the sky.

Not long ago, it was generally accepted that humanity’s most creative achievements, from art and poetry to major scientific discoveries, were the precious fruits of solitude. But in a single heartbeat on history’s timeline, this sacred, fecund privacy has become the unpardonable social sin for the generation on which future creativity depends. I’ve tried to explain to young people that unspoilt privacy is the most important thing a person like me could ever ask from his life. Just so they know where I stand. Urgent warnings that technology is recklessly exposing our darkest secrets to every eager peeping Tom – official, corporate or criminal – fall on deaf (or at least numb and overtaxed) ears. The traditional concept of privacy, which anchors America’s Bill of Rights, is a tough sell to technophiliacs who spend half their waking hours on sites such as MySpace and YouTube, recklessly exposing themselves.

A recent US study (published in January 2010) found that eight to 18 year-olds log an average daily exposure of just under 11 hours of electronic media. An increase of two hours daily since 2004, it includes computers and social networks, cellphones, instant messaging, television, video games and iPods. Media consume nearly all their waking hours when they’re not in school. Privacy has deep, deep roots in Western civilisation, yet a few mediocre gadgets uprooted it in less than a decade. Who knew the young were so lonely, so susceptible, so desperate for connection? Who’s to blame for their loneliness, for their seduction and metamorphosis into electro-cyborgs who bear only a physical resemblance to their parents? What sort of lives were they leading before they were wired? It’s as if prisoners buried in the dungeons of the Chateau d’If, with no previous communication except tapping on the stone walls of their separate cells, were suddenly issued mobile phones with email. What else but a compulsive frenzy of messaging, no content required?

Digital products seemed harmless enough in the beginning, meeting obvious demands for faster, more efficient commercial communication. Business will have its way. But the personal computer and all its derivative technology were not so obvious, not to most of us now left behind. We were sure it was boring – to liberal arts majors of my vintage, most tools more complex than a hammer are invisible. We never dreamed it was more addictive than heroin. “I lost my cellphone once,” a 25-year- old woman with a master’s degree told a reporter. “I felt like my world had just ended. I had a breakdown on campus.”

Some of the wizards who fathered the digital revolution have had misgivings. The late Joseph Weizenbaum, an MIT mathematician and computer scientist who authored one of the first conversational computer programs, became a profound sceptic about technology’s influence on the human condition. Weizenbaum, who was a child in Nazi Germany, believed that obsessive reliance on technology was a moral failure in society and an invitation to fascism.

Weizenbaum’s scepticism was shared by American computer pioneer and mogul Max Palevsky, who died recently at 85. Palevsky, founder of the computer-chip giant Intel, told an interviewer in 2008, “I don’t own a computer. I don’t own a cellphone, I don’t own any electronics. I do own a radio.” Given decades to reflect on what they wrought, it’s eerie that many of the scientists who created our electronic cocoon sound like the scientists who worked on the atom bomb at Los Alamos.

The wailing of the wire-wary only aggravates the captive multitudes and widens the dreadful gap. But we can’t just fold our tents and quit the field, because we, the pre-wired generations, bear most of the blame. We betrayed them. We turned them over to habit-forming, mind-altering, behaviour-warping gizmos when they were helpless children. There was almost no resistance. Politicians, colleges, school boards, doomed publishers, libraries and media all welcomed these technologies uncritically, enthusiastically, like Stone Age savages fainting with wonder over a transistor radio. Americans have always been suckers for technology – our love affairs with automobiles, television and nuclear power haven’t turned out well either. But this was the most pitiful submission, and may prove the most fateful.

No one denies the impact of these new devices, or their usefulness. Who at my age, watching precious time fly, wouldn’t bless email for the pointless, time-consuming conversations it replaces? Who denies that Barack Obama’s epic rout of the Republicans would have been impossible without his mastery of internet communication? But with truly revolutionary technology no one stops to factor in the human cost.

Chronic, epidemic obesity among American children, along with unprecedented levels of juvenile diabetes and heart disease, coincides exactly with the advent of “personal technology”. An alarming study that followed 4,000 subjects for three decades indicates that 90 per cent of American men and 70 per cent of American women will eventually be fat.

Worse news is that the American mind is emulating its body – it’s turning to suet. A few years ago the educational benefits of the new technology were hyped hysterically, with futurists and investors predicting an intellectual renaissance anchored by computers.

The reality seems to be just the opposite. Though the educational potential of the internet is limitless, it’s becoming apparent that students use technology less to learn than to distract themselves from learning, and to take advantage of toxic short cuts such as research paper databases and essay-writing websites. Entrance exams administered by ACT Inc establish that half the students now entering college in the US lack the basic reading and comprehension skills to succeed in literature, history or sociology courses. Reading and writing skills among eighth graders decline each year, as internet penetration rises. Only three per cent now read at the level scored “advanced” and the state of Maine recently scrapped its eighth grade writing test because 78 per cent of the participants failed. Half the teenagers tested by the advocacy group Common Core could not place the Civil War in the second half of the 19th century, a quarter drew a blank on Adolf Hitler, a fifth failed to identify America’s enemies in the Second World War. A third of America’s high school students drop out – one every 26 seconds – and two thirds prove incapable of higher education.

Doubts are spreading, though perhaps too late. In the spring of 2007, Liverpool High School in upstate New York made national news when it abandoned its laptop programme as a failed experiment and went back to books. “After seven years there was literally no evidence it had any impact on student achievement – none,” said Mark Lawson, president of the Liverpool school board. While their test scores stagnated, Liverpool students used their laptops to cheat on exams, message friends, hack into local businesses, update Facebook profiles and download pornography.

“The teachers were telling us that when there’s a one-to-one relationship between the student and the laptop, the machine gets in the way,” Lawson concluded. “It’s a distraction to the educational process.”

There’s so much more to dislike about our cocoon woven of wires, our house built of chips. Thieves, grifters and predators of every description have flourished in the cyber-forest; the signature crime of the 21st century is identity theft. The internet is the greatest gift to the paedophile community since the Vatican stood its ground on celibate priests.

But if you think these are all quibbles compared with the joy and comfort your hardware provides, try out your polished indifference on the prospect of environmental apocalypse. “E-waste”, as it’s now called, is the sobering dark side to even the rosiest view of an all-wired future. In the US in 2005, more than 1.5 million tons of discarded electronic devices ended up in landfills, where hi-tech’s toxic metals, including lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium, find their way into the soil, the water tables and the air.

In China, which produces a million tons of e-waste annually and imports, for profit, 70 per cent of the world’s lethal garbage (estimated at as much as 50 million tons), whistle-blowers are already blaming high rates of birth defects, infant mortality and blood diseases on e-waste. With their reliance on instant obsolescence and limited commitment to recycling, hardware manufacturers create an unmanageable flow of poisonous trash that the planet can’t possibly tolerate: Americans alone discard 100 million computers, cellphones and related devices every year, at a rate of 136,000 per day. Half a billion of the US’s old cellphones sit in drawers, dead but not buried. There is no place and no plan for all this stuff. Our world has been wired by wildly inefficient technology – it takes roughly 1.8 tons of raw materials (fossil fuels, water, metal ores) to manufacture one PC and its monitor, and mining the gold needed for the circuit board of a single cellphone generates 220lb of waste. These industries are self‑evidently unsustainable. They are not environmentally sane.

The case against technology is not a difficult one to make, not even for someone from a generation like mine, which chose to fry millions of healthy neurons with LSD, psilocybin, cannabis and cocaine. The walking wounded from that excess are still around, but most of us kicked our habits and descended safely from those treacherous highs.

High tech is a habit too new to boast any record of survivors, recovering addicts, successful rehabs. So far, no one’s coming back. In the words of recovery programmes, users have yet to acknowledge that they have a problem. Or that there is a problem. Staring for hours at glowing squares, gossiping with needy strangers, poking away at little keyboards, playing half-assed violent games – does this strike anyone as an interesting and honourable life, or even a preparation for one? And the answer, more often than not, would come back, “Sure, what’s your problem?”

With that last outburst, I probably sacrifice half the readers I have left. But if you’re offended or threatened, console yourself with the impotence and rapid extinction of my kind. We pose no threat to your habit.

Technology’s sceptics are ageing and thinning out. Soon, by conversion or attrition, they will vanish. Soon, when everyone is born wired into the hive, no more of them will appear. All the more reason to have our say, leave our protests on the record, exit cursing and fighting.

Music is one of the great therapies. Throughout recorded history in all parts of the
world, music has been used as therapy. In fact, of all factors that have been
investigated, probably none enhances the Life Energy and reduces stress more
effectively than music.[1] Perhaps the most obvious example of this is the fact that
at the age of seventy, when some 50% of American males are already dead, some
80% of musical conductors are still alive, healthy, and productive. The tremendous
therapeutic power of music has always been recognized, and it has been the subject
of many discourses, from the time of Pythagoras to Moses Maimonides and
beyond.[2] To me, as to Pythagoras, music is not mere entertainment or amusement
(the absence of the muse), but therapy. It is one of the most potent modalities that
exists for actuating what the Greeks called thymos, what Hippocrates called the vis
medicatrix naturae, the healing power that exists within us all: Life Energy.
There are still many cultures in which there has been no divorce between music and
healing. For example, in many so‐called primitive societies, the healing shaman is
nearly always a musician, and music and incantation are as important as all the
other aspects of his profession. The only remnant we see of this in our society is the
use of music in religious ceremonies, a custom which dates back to a time before the
separation in our society of medicine and religion. And thus throughout the
centuries and today, over and above the usual satisfaction or the more physical
enjoyment we may derive from music, there is another quality, and it is this other
quality, this Life Energy enhancing quality to which I have devoted a major part of
my research over the years.

I have tested many thousands of phonograph recordings recorded over a period of
over eighty years, and it has been found that almost without exception this music
has been therapeutic,[3] often highly so. In fact, it has been used for stress
reduction, relaxation, general tonification, analgesia, as part of modified
acupuncture techniques, and as adjunctive therapy in drug withdrawal programs.
Music has also been used in programs to overcome fears and phobias, alleviate
insomnia, and even for the "tranquilization" of acutely disturbed psychotic patients.
In 1979 this changed. I suddenly found that I was not achieving the same
therapeutic results as before, that playing records of the same compositions to the
same patients was producing a completely contrary effect! Instead of their stress
being reduced and their Life Energy being actuated, the opposite was occurring.
Music examples that I had long used to promote sleep now seemed to be actually
aggravating the insomnia. And I found in one case that instead of the music helping a
patient withdraw from tranquilizers, it seemed to increase his need for them.
Special tapes for businessmen to use during their rest periods seemed suddenly to
increase rather than reduce their stress. These findings were very alarming.
When I investigated these paradoxical phenomena, I found that in all cases they
were related to the use of digital recordings. These were vinyl records made from
digital masters.[4] When I substituted analog versions of the same work, sometimes
even with the same performers, the positive therapeutic effects were again
obtained. There seemed to me little doubt that something was "wrong" with the
digital process. Apparently the digital recording technique not only did not enhance
Life Energy and reduce stress, but it was actually untherapeutic ‐ that is, it imposed
a stress and reduced Life Energy. Through some mechanism of which I am not
aware the digital process was somehow reversing the therapeutic effects of the
music!

In a number of instances I had analog and digital performances that we could easily
compare. One was of Zubin Mehta conducting Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto. The
digital performance (on London) had a stress‐inducing effect whereas the old analog
performance (on Vox) did not. Also the early LP transfers of Caruso and McCormack
were Life Energy enhancing whereas the Soundstreamed digital versions had the
opposite effect. Yet these were records of the same performance. The only
difference was the digitalization process. And this was apparent even though the
original recordings had been made nearly seventy years ago. Other examples were
the Japanese Denon PCM recordings of various Czech performers whose earlier
versions were on the Supraphon label. They were the same performers and the
same works. The only difference appeared to be the digital process.
As a part of my work and as one of my research tools, I employ muscle testing, in a
modification of the standard Applied Kinesiology testing. It is modified as I first
presented to an ICAK conference in 1977. See the description of my study with Dr.
Florence Kendall in my Kinesiology Report Number 10, December, 1977. At the
request of Dr. Goodheart, I demonstrated this again at the ICAK conference in Monte
Carlo in 1995.

If you play a digital recording, it will be found that the muscle that was previously
testing strong and could easily resist the pressure, will be unable to do so ‐ that the
digital effect has so stressed the subject that he cannot resist. Something has
happened. Some stress has been introduced which is now manifest in this negative
response. Perhaps even more striking are the differences in stress effects found
upon testing a recording session in which digital and analog recordings were made
simultaneously.[5] Similar effects are also apparent with the human speaking voice
using this newer digital recording process.[6]
This effect obviously is not due to the performer nor to the composer, since other
recordings, analog, of the same performer and the same composer do not have this
effect. In fact, they are therapeutic ‐ that is, they reduce stress and enhance Life
Energy on testing. There is a yet‐to‐be‐identified factor involved in the digital
technique which is causing this stress. At some level the ear is perceiving a signal
which it recognizes as being unnatural and alarming. This instantaneously causes a
stress reaction which is manifest in the loss of muscle response on test.

Many audiophiles and engineers state that they have noticed that they can discern
something vaguely "wrong" with the digital recording process but cannot quite
pinpoint the problem. Using the test, it can easily be shown that, using the same
playback system, the difference between analog and digital recording does exist.
While we certainly enjoy the benefits of this major technological breakthrough,
there are subtle physiological effects still to be considered.

It is important to emphasize that this is not a test of muscle strength. It is a test of
the integrity of the acupuncture system. Through it flows the electromagnetic
energy of the body. A heavy, powerful testing is a test of muscle strength, not of Life
Energy, and it is, in essence, a different test. When I demonstrated my findings at the
Audio Engineering Society conference in Los Angeles in May 1980, I was accused of
pushing too hard when the subjects were failing when the digital records were
being played. In point of fact, pushing "too hard" if anything will fail to demonstrate
the effect. It is not, I repeat NOT, a test of muscle strength. Hence the testing
requires considerable expertise. It is not for casual and amateurish usage. It is a
professional discipline.

This test has been performed both by myself and others under double blind test
situations on many occasions, and the results always tend to be about the same,
with many provisos. In particular, I wish to emphasize that for accurate testing
there are many variables that must be controlled, many more than I can elaborate
upon in this short presentation. Furthermore, as I have previously stated, for
accurate interpretation I test not just at the one superficial level of testing that I
have described above, but in at least twelve deeper levels as well. It is only when all
the variables are accurately controlled and testing is carried out at all levels and
parameters that the findings are meaningful.

I am more aware than any pro‐digital advocate of the shortcomings of the test. And I
would like nothing more than to be able to read a meter instead. However, although
many electronics experts have tried to help me to design such an instrument, they
have never been successful. They finally realize that perhaps the body itself may be
a better test device than any instrument that we can make. Will we ever measure the
difference between violins, or poems?

I personally believe that the proper research tool can be designed, but it will not
ultimately be related to any muscle test. It will involve measuring the change in
electromagnetic activity in that part of the body where is situated what we may call
the acupuncture central processor, because it is the electromagnetic disturbance
there which is manifested as a weakening of the test muscle. And it is there,
centrally, that the stressful effect of the digital recordings occurs, being then
reflected in a diminished acupuncture energy flow to the specific meridian feeding
the muscle being tested.

What if my findings and those of my colleagues are correct? For many years now,
nearly all recordings of otherwise therapeutic music have been made using the
digital process. The implications of this, both for today and for our future, are very
disturbing. If the major therapeutic recording artists of today are recorded for
posterity using the present digital technique their efforts will be valueless for us and
valueless for future generations. No more will we be able to call upon the
therapeutic powers, the true healing powers, of the musicians of our day as we have
called upon the musicians of the past. This will mark the end of the therapeutic era
of recorded music. The great technological advance of being able to bring the
greatest performers into our homes for true entertainment, and much more
importantly, to raise our Life Energy, will have been destroyed.

When a man comes home stressed after a day's work and puts on a record of a
Schubert piano sonata to help him re‐energize, the opposite will occur. He will
become more stressed. And he will learn over a period of time that music does not
help him to relax as he had expected. Or a person who as part of his religious pursuit
plays a record of the Bach B Minor Mass will perhaps recognize that he is further
removed from his goal ‐ that instead of serenity, instead of holiness, instead of a
feeling of life enhancement, the opposite has occurred. The music has become
untherapeutic, contrary to its true nature.
It is no longer Music!

We will then cease to regard music as being what it is: one of the great therapies.
Our recorded musical heritage will still satisfy the brain but will do nothing for the
rest of the listener. Our true recorded musical heritage will be at an end.

I have frequently been in the position where discoveries first made through
"unscientific" means have later been validated by what would be called the more
usual scientific methods, and I have no doubt that in the future it will be recognized
that the findings concerning digital recordings will be validated. But by that time, it
may be that many works of our great artists will have been preserved in an
unacceptable form.

By correcting the digital technique, we may actually now be able to make recordings
more therapeutic than they have ever been before, more so than analog. By
discovering the central problem in existing digital recording techniques, we may be
in a position then to so improve them that we ultimately have advanced the
therapeutic benefit to mankind.

Postscript, May 2003
Finally, about two years ago, I was contacted by several of the major recording and
electronic companies who said that they never forgot my address to the Audio
Engineering Society in 1980. They said they knew then that I was right with what I
had presented about the negative effects of the digital process, but unfortunately it
was released anyhow. They asked me to help in finding a solution to what they were
now calling “digital fatigue.” Over the years I have tried many methods but all
without success – until now.

Back then in 1980, I had only digitally recorded and/or mastered vinyl LPs to test.
The arrival of CDs a few years later increased the problem. As with LPs, but more so,
the stress leads after a certain time (different for each individual) to a reversal of
their usual ethical and medical standards of belief. The effects of this profound
change that I have now investigated for some twenty years are I believe a very
important etiological factor in the increase in childhood and adolescent
disturbances, (witness the soaring rate of Ritalin prescribing), and in the escalating
violence in our society.

Especially when we recall that the digital process is no longer confined to recorded
music but is now affecting us nearly all day: TV, radio, telephones etc. It is we who
have become digitalized!

With the advent of Direct Stream Digital (DSD) recording, it is now possible to
conclude that the negative effects I have stated above are due not to the digital
process per se but to the mode of achieving it, Pulse Code Modulation (PCM). For
DSD recordings do not have these negative effects.

Although it was suggested, unfortunately the record industry did not make analog
backups of their digital (PCM) sessions. So now there is a (very expensive) twenty
year hiatus. Hence some SACDs (the CD format for DSD) are being released which
have gone through the PCM process and are as negative as regular CDs.
Increasingly over the years, music lovers are turning against PCM – they are feeling
what I first demonstrated nearly a quarter‐century ago. And they are resisting –
proclaiming that it doesn’t sound like, feel like, analog. Cold, no heart. That is to say,
untherapeutic.

(We must remember that a generation has probably rarely heard non‐PCM music –
for it is now so pervasive in concerts halls as “digital reinforcement” as well.)
Perhaps now there will be a change. We all know something is wrong – and the
solution is available.

I write this not only as a music lover, and a believer in the therapeutic power of
music, but even more so as a doctor gravely concerned with the increasing
disturbance in our society, especially in the children. The very essence of Music is
the expression of peace, of comfort – of love. And this PCM has destroyed, even
reversed!

As a very experienced sound engineer and producer lamented, "Music has lost its
Spirit." That’s it – exactly! And a generation has grown up not knowing it any other
way: not knowing the higher dimension of music – the True Music.
And if their music has lost its spiritual dimension – then so have they!
We have lost our love of Music because we no longer feel loved by It. We must get it
back – and we can.
