Adventist Journey - Pamela D'Souza-David

Dr. Pamela D'Souza-David was born into an Adventist family and always "knew" Jesus was there, often praying and connecting with Him. She moved to Hong Kong from India when she was very young and eventually settled in the United States. A self-proclaimed "biology nerd" D'Souza-David thought she would become a pediatrician but a brief conversation with another student had her thinking ophthalmology--which meant harder exams and a major shift. She wasn't sure what to do until she heard a Sabbath sermon by U.S. Senate Chaplain Barry Black on prayer and prayed. She put in the work, tested, and got a score higher than she had prayed for. But it wasn't smooth sailing as D'Souza-David joined the workforce and then later attempted to start her own practice while balancing family life and dealing with COVID-19 pandemic closures. D'Souza-David is featured on the cover of the July/August 2025 Adventist Journey magazine.

Greetings to our more than 21 million members around the world who make up the wonderful Seventh-day Adventist church family in more than 200 countries! I thank God for each one of you and want to encourage you, no matter where you are, to be an active member in your local church, and to reach out to your surrounding community, making friends as you gently yet purposefully guide people to Jesus and His love and truth. Always remember that you are the church—that God is eagerly looking to you to reach others for Him. He has called you, and He will equip you as you spend time with Him in prayer and the study of His word.

As you may know, at least two times a year, members of the world church’s General Conference Executive Committee gather together to discuss important spiritual and business items guiding the work of our worldwide church. The Executive Committee is made up of church leaders, teachers, pastors, and lay members from the thirteen world divisions, the Middle East and North Africa Union (MENA) and attached fields of the General Conference.

The full Executive Committee meets during what is called Annual Council, held in October of each year. A somewhat smaller group of the committee meets in April for the shorter Spring Meeting, where the focus is mainly on the finances of the church, along with related items. In addition, we also take some time to focus on important spiritual aspects, especially during the morning worship times together.

In just a few days from now, April 9 and 10, the Spring Meeting will take place here at the world headquarters of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. You are welcome to join us during these meetings, via the livestream on the Executive Committee website at executivecommittee.adventist.org. The meetings begin with morning worship at 8 a.m., Eastern Daylight Time.

If They Knew How to Bridge This Gap with Me - Michael: Outspoken

By now, for those who pay attention to LGBT+ stories from within the Seventh-day Adventist community, it is a familiar narrative: young person grows up in traditional, rural Adventist home; young person is raised knowing that homosexuality is wrong; young person realizes (s)he identifies as homosexual; young person tries to be straight, agonizes over same-gender attractions, fears that people will find out, prays for feelings to be taken away; prayer does not change things; and young person (now a bit older) comes to terms with and accepts his/her sexual identity. Tension remains between young person and the family members who have difficulty coming to terms with non-hetero identities.

And of course, as is the case for Michael, the subject of the 7th installment of the "Outspoken" documentary series, there is always more to the story. There are feelings of isolation, of not being heard or understood, and feelings of being disconnected from family and the faith community that cannot or will not embrace LGBT+ people.

In addition to all that for Michael, there was—there is—partnership: a committed relationship with Peter that began with the dating app OKCupid. Michael lights up as he discusses finding someone with whom he fits so well.

“That feels very surreal but very good,” Michael says. But there is also a bitter to that moment’s sweet.

“I don’t know if my parents can fully appreciate how happy I am now because I don’t know if they fully understand how sad I was . . . and sometimes I still am,” Michael says.

“I know that if they knew how to bridge this gap with me, I know that they would do it in an instant. . . . Adventism is such a core thing for them and who they are.”

We’re left wondering whether Michael’s family—and whether the families of so many others like him—will ever be able to accept and embrace this part of their child.

In just sixteen minutes, filmmakers Daneen Akers and Stephen Eyer manage to fill up our eyes with stars and with tears in turn.

That is the power of story . . . of Michael’s story.

Observe that because of two floods and a fire had to change the place, in the various holy years, of worship planned for that year jubilee. The Colosseum is one of the protagonists.

The documentary focuses especially in the main jubilee took place in history, it was one of the year 2000. It will be Joaquin Navarro-Valls, spokesman for Pope John Paul II, who will tell us firsthand details until now unknown.

A plea for Unity sent to the John 17 Movement of Phoenix, AZ

It's no secret that division in a family brings harm and pain on many levels. The church which is described as the family of God remains divided. The attitudes and harsh judgements amongst professing Christians have caused deep wounds and centuries of conflicts.

"Father I pray that those who believe in me will be one so the world will know you sent me." That prayer of Jesus in the 17th chapter of the Gospel according to John is the reason Roman Catholics and a variety of Protestant Christians met together on May 23rd, 2105 in Phoenix, Arizona.

There was a declaration made that day by those in attendance to see the Church in Phoenix becoming relationally unified in a way that would make the claims of Jesus visibly seen and felt by those within and outside of the church.

My impression of our day but even more of the effort and working together of so many leading up to Saturday's meeting gives me hope that the church in all of its rich diversity can live and work as one family in the unity of the Holy Spirit.
