It is understood the man attended Utah State University on a scholarship

The suspect in Charlie Kirk's assassination has been identified as 22-year-old old Utah resident Tyler Robinson.

Robinson was taken into custody accused of killing the conservative political activist who was holding a rally at Utah Valley University on Wednesday.

The alleged killer confessed to his father Matt - a 27-year veteran of the Washington County Sheriff's Department.

His father contacted authorities and got his son before police could arrest him.

Amber Robinson, his mother, works for Intermountain Support Coordination Services, a company which is contracted by the state of Utah to help disabled people receive care.

Robinson attended Utah State University on a scholarship, insiders have said.

The family's social media shows Robinson, who has two younger brothers, enjoying family vacations and sharing smiling selfies.

They included some celebrating the alleged assassin getting into college.

Chapter 15—Jacob and Joseph

Of the twelve sons of Jacob, the one for whom he had special love was Joseph; for he was the son of his beloved wife Rachel, and one of the children of his old age. He was a son of remarkable beauty. His oldest sons had arrived at manhood, and had developed unhappy traits of character. There was continual strife among the eleven; they were neither just nor benevolent toward each other. The envy and jealousy which were cherished by the several mothers making the family relation very unhappy, were instilled by word and example into the minds and hearts of the children, who grew up revengeful, jealous, and uncontrollable. They would not endure provocation, for they had too long cherished hatred and revenge. These evils will ever be found to be the result of polygamy. Each of the mothers is envious and jealous lest her own children shall not receive due attention from the father; and again they experience bitterness and discontent whenever they are made to feel that another is preferred before them. Children who grow up together surrounded by such elements are most likely to indulge in resentment for every supposed slight, and revenge for any imaginary wrongs. There is that in polygamy which dries up human affection, and tempts to the loosening of ties which should be held sacred. ST December 18, 1879, par. 1

Jacob’s life was made very bitter by the conduct of his sons. Joseph had another spirit; he was cheerful and happy, and possessed great love for his father whose heart was bound up in his child. This preference for Joseph was unwisely manifested, and called out the revengeful disposition of his other sons. When Joseph saw the wicked course pursued by his brethren he remonstrated with them; but they hated him for his entreaties, and for daring to reprove them who were so much older than he, and accused him of being a spy upon their actions. As Joseph saw that his words and entreaties only excited wrath against himself, he laid the plans and evil purposes of his brethren before his father, which gave him knowledge of many things he otherwise would not have known. The fathers of children among the Hebrews were made responsible in a great degree for the sins of their children, when they were left without the exercise of authority and restraint. When the father’s solicitude was expressed to his sons in a voice tremulous with grief, and he implored them to have respect for his gray hairs and not make his name a reproach, and to be despised because of their course, the sons felt sorry and ashamed before their father, because their wickedness was known, but felt envious and jealous of Joseph because he had informed his father of their course of sin. Jacob flattered himself that his sons repented of their wickedness, and he trusted they would reform. ST December 18, 1879, par. 2

Jacob unwisely gave expression to his love for Joseph in making him a present of a coat of beautiful colors. This only increased the hatred of his brothers against him; for they thought Joseph had stolen their father’s affections from them, and they considered themselves ill treated and deprived of their father’s confidence and love. They did not see that their own wicked course was a continual shame and disgrace to his gray hairs, and that his affections centered upon Joseph because of his purity and true excellence of character. ST December 18, 1879, par. 3

The Lord gave Joseph a dream which he related; Jacob would have been alarmed had he suspected the hatred and malicious feelings this dream aroused in the hearts of his sons against his beloved child. Joseph dreamed that while they were all engaged binding sheaves of grain, his sheaf arose and stood upright, and the sheaves of all the rest stood round about and bowed before his sheaf. No sooner was his dream related than they all understood its significance. His brothers exclaimed with indignation, “Shalt thou indeed have dominion over us?” Their hatred toward him burned deeper in their hearts than before. Soon the Lord gave Joseph another dream of the same import, but more strikingly significant. This dream he also related to his father and his brethren. He said, “Behold I have dreamed a dream more, and, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars made obeisance to me.” The interpretation of this dream was quite as quickly discerned as was that of the first. “And his father rebuked him, and said unto him, what is this dream that thou hast dreamed? Shall I and thy mother and thy brethren indeed come to bow down ourselves to thee to the earth? And his brethren envied him; but his father observed the saying.” ST December 18, 1879, par. 4

Like a youthful prophet Joseph stood before them in the simplicity of virtuous innocence, his beautiful countenance lighted up with the spirit of inspiration. His brethren could but admire his purity and goodness; but they did not choose to leave their wicked course and become virtuous and noble like him. The spirit that actuated Cain was fastening upon them. Like him they hated their brother because he was innocent and righteous and beloved of his father, while they were wicked and a source of grief to their father as Cain was to his father. ST December 18, 1879, par. 5

Joseph’s father had confidence that the Lord was revealing the future to his son; but his words of apparent severity did not satisfy his elder sons, for the voice of tremulous affection betrayed his true feelings. He called to mind the promise of God to Abraham, to Isaac, and to himself. His heart had been grieved and disappointed in his older sons, but as he saw the qualities of mind possessed by Joseph, his hopes centered in him. He hoped that God would wonderfully bless him, the eldest son of his beloved Rachel. The favor with which Jacob regarded Joseph could not be concealed, and the gorgeous colored coat which he had given him was a clear evidence to his sons of his partiality. This they thought gave them sufficient reason for harboring jealousy, hatred, and revenge in their hearts. ST December 18, 1879, par. 6

These brothers were obliged to move from place to place in order to secure better pasturage for their flocks, and sometimes they did not see their father for months. At one time Jacob directed them to go to Shechem, a place which he had purchased. After they had been gone some time, and he had received no word from them he feared that evil might have befallen them, knowing that they were near where their cruelty had been practiced upon the Shechemites. So he sent Joseph to Shechem to find his brethren, and bring him word of their condition. Had Jacob known the true feelings of his sons toward Joseph, he would not have trusted him alone with them; but they had concealed their wicked purposes from him. ST December 18, 1879, par. 7

When Joseph arrived at the place where his father supposed his brethren were, he did not find them. As he was traveling from field to field in search of them, a stranger learned his errand and told him they had gone to Dothan. He had already traveled fifty miles, and, a distance of fifteen more lay before him. This was a long journey for the youth; but he performed it cheerfully, desiring to relieve the anxiety of his beloved father, and longing to see his brethren who were enshrined in his affections. But he was illy repaid for his love and obedience. ST December 18, 1879, par. 8

At length he saw his brethren in the distance and hastened to greet them. They also saw him coming, his gay colored coat making him easily recognized; but as they beheld it, their feelings of envy, jealousy, and hatred, were aroused. They did not consider the long journey he had made on foot to meet them; they did not think of his weariness and hunger, and that as their brother he had claims upon their hospitality, their tender consideration and brotherly love. The sight of that coat which signalized him in the distance filled them with a Satanic frenzy. “And when they saw him afar off, even before he came near unto them, they conspired against him to slay him. And they said one to another, Behold, this dreamer cometh.” ST December 18, 1879, par. 9

There seemed to be a common feeling of deadly hatred in their hearts. They had engaged in carnage and destruction until their feelings had become calloused. The indulgence of one known sin deadens the conscience so that it is more easily overcome with the next temptation. Thus step by step the course of sin and transgression is pursued until there is a harvest of crime through the indulgence of the first sin. These men regardless of the consequences, had passed on from stage, to stage hardening their hearts in the indulgence of sin until they had to all intents and purposes the spirit of Cain. They were enraged that Joseph had heretofore informed against them, and they looked upon him as a spy. ST December 18, 1879, par. 10

They had ere this decided that if a favorable opportunity offered they would slay him; the proposition was made, “Come now, therefore, and let us slay him, and cast him into some pit, and we will say, some evil beast hath devoured him; and we shall see what will become of his dreams.” ST December 18, 1879, par. 11

This terrible purpose would have been carried out had not Reuben shrunk from participating in the murder of his brother. He plead for Joseph, showing with clear arguments what guilt would ever rest upon them, and, that the curse of God would come upon them for such a crime. He proposed to have him cast alive into a pit, and left there to perish, meaning to take him out privately and return him to his father. He left their company, fearing that his feelings would betray his design. ST December 18, 1879, par. 12

Joseph came on, glad and joyful that the object of his long search was accomplished. But, instead of a pleasant greeting, he met only scorn, abuse, and fierceness of looks which terrified him. He was immediately seized, and the coat which had created so much hatred, was stripped from him with the most taunting remarks. He had never before received such treatment and he expected his brethren would immediately kill him. His mind runs back to his home, his father, and the blessing he had received as he parted from him, and then he anticipated the sorrow he would feel at his death and the guilt of his murderers. He entreated them to spare his life, but all to no avail; he was helpless in the hands of infuriated men whose hearts were insensible to pity, and whose ears were deaf to the cry of anguish. But the eye of God was upon him, and Joseph’s cries of distress reached his throne. His brethren thrust him into a dark pit and then sat down to enjoy their customary meal. But while they were eating, they saw a company of Ishmaelites approaching, and Judah, who was beginning to regret what had been done, suggested that here was an opportunity to sell their brother and obtain money, which would be better than leaving him to perish in the pit; for said he, is he not our own flesh? Then, too, Judah thought that he could be disposed of by being removed entirely from them. All agreed to the proposition of Judah; Joseph was drawn up out of the pit, and heartlessly sold as a slave. ST December 18, 1879, par. 13

Survey reveals growing attacks on religious freedom in US

TAMPA, Florida, August 21, 2012 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Hostility against religious liberty has reached an all-time high in America, and the attacks are increasing at an unprecedented rate, say two pro-family groups that track attacks on religious freedom in the U.S.

Liberty Institute and the Family Research Council, two organizations committed to protecting and advancing religious liberty in the U.S., have released the updated edition of their Survey of Religious Hostility in America—a compilation of more than 600 documented incidents of hostility to religion that have occurred in the United States over the last 10 years.

Kelly Shackelford, President & CEO of Liberty Institute, and Tony Perkins, President of the Family Research Council, announced the release of the survey on Monday during the platform week of the Republican National Convention in Tampa.

“America today would be unrecognizable to our Founders,” said Shackelford in the presentation. “Our First Liberty is facing a relentless onslaught from well-funded and aggressive groups and individuals who are using the courts, Congress, and the vast federal bureaucracy to suppress and limit religious freedom. This radicalized minority is driven by an anti-religious ideology that is turning the First Amendment upside down.”

Mr. Perkins said, “As dark as this survey is, there is much light. The secularists’ agenda only advances when those who love liberty are apathetic. Let this be a call to stand for religious liberty in the United States.”

The introduction to the document explains that the Survey of Religious Hostility in America grew out of testimony that Shackelford, along with a number of Liberty Institute clients, provided to the U.S. Senate in 2004 about the growing religious hostility in America. Because the opposition insisted these select testimonies were simply isolated incidents, Senators Kennedy and Cornyn asked Liberty Institute to provide additional information, which led to the development of the first “hostilities document.”

While the updated survey provides irrefutable evidence of growing numbers and severity of offenses to religious freedom in U.S. churches, schools, and in the public arena, it also shows that those persons and organizations that stand up for religious liberty are winning, the two pro-family leaders said.

The document is divided into three broad categories to aid the reader in understanding how these hundreds of incidents are related: attacks on religious liberty in the public arena, attacks on religious liberty at the schoolhouse, and attacks against churches and ministries.

Examples of the increasing hostility to religion described in this survey include city officials who prohibited senior citizens from praying over their meals, listening to religious messages, or singing gospel songs at a senior activities centre; a federal judge’s threatened “incarceration” of a high school valedictorian unless she removed references to Jesus from her graduation speech; the Affordable Healthcare Act (“ObamaCare”), whereby the federal government is forcing religious organizations to provide insurance for birth control and abortion-inducing drugs in direct violation of their religious beliefs; a federal judge who held that prayers before a state House of Representatives could be to Allah but not to Jesus; and the U.S. Department of Justice that argued before the Supreme Court that the federal government can tell churches and synagogues which pastors and rabbis it can hire and fire.

“Liberty Institute and the Family Research Council have joined forces to take a bold stand to protect and restore religious liberty in America,” Shackelford and Perkins said in their joint statement. “This includes opposing and exposing the escalating efforts by government bureaucrats to regulate religious freedom. So, from the local district courts to the U.S. Supreme Court and in the halls of Congress, we will face each challenge head-on to ensure that our sacred First Amendment rights are protected.”

“As our country enters into one of the most critical elections of our time, we ask that people of all faiths join together and stand with us as we continue the important work of defending our most precious liberty — our freedom of religion,” the two pro-family leaders concluded.

Timothy Geithner's Best Asset: Everybody Hates Him

A lack of ideological bias has allowed him to pursue practical solutions to deal with crises

If you're a conservative, then you probably have no love for Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner. He wanted to end the Bush tax cuts for the rich in 2010. You might think his foreclosure prevention plan was a mess. But if you're a progressive, then you probably don't love the guy either. He wasn't particularly aggressive in pursuing cramdowns or principal reductions for struggling homeowners. He also doesn't tend to be too hard on the banks. So who does like Geithner? President Obama must -- he worked to ensure that Geithner wouldn't resign earlier this year when his family moved back to New York. It isn't hard to see why: Geithner is a rare breed of high-level official who looks for practical solutions without letting politics get in the way.

Jackie Calmes at the New York Times highlights the president's surprising unwavering desire to keep Geithner around as other economic advisors departed over time. Calmes notes that both sides of the aisle have attacked Geithner's policies and positions over the past couple of years. Let's look at some of the chief reasons why people don't like Geithner.

He Went Too Easy on the Banks

Those who lean left sometimes criticize Geithner for being too friendly to the banks. Indeed, some even accuse him of having worked for Goldman Sachs. (He didn't.) In fact, Geithner's financial reform proposal that preceded Congress' legislation set the tone for many of the provisions that eventually were passed -- and we all know how much noise the banks have made about that bill. He also helped to ensure that the government got back more than it provided the banks in the 2008 rescue, as taxpayers ultimately made a profit on the bank bailout.

To be sure, he could have been harder on the banks. But don't forget: the financial crisis was a time when the banking industry nearly collapsed. The entire purpose of the bailout and subsequent stability programs was to ensure that the industry survived. Even if harsher punishment was justified, it would have been impractical until the broader economy had improved. So even if Geithner did want to go harder on the banks, he likely understood that doing so would make everyone worse off.

His Housing Policy Was Too Aggressive / Not Aggressive Enough

When I first read the Treasury's mortgage modification plan in early 2009, I thought it would result in a fairly large number of modifications. I was wrong -- it will struggle to reach the 1 million mark. The program was crafted as a way to gently persuade banks to modify mortgages without compelling them to do so with lots of carrots but few sticks. And remember, this was before we knew about all of the bank's foreclosure process flaws.

Still, critics on the right think that government-induced mortgage modifications are unfair to borrowers who dutifully pay their bills, while critics on the left want to see the government aggressively force banks to write-down principle to end foreclosures. Either option is extreme. Geithner took a moderate approach by providing incentives for banks to modify mortgages without compelling them to declare deep losses on underwater loans that could endanger stability.

He Didn't See Such a Deep Recession

Perhaps the most unfair criticism of Geithner is that he didn't realize how bad the recession would be. It's certainly true that he probably didn't expect that unemployment would be 9% 34 months into Obama's first term. But then, who did? Only a select few anticipated this much pain for the U.S. economy. None of Obama's other major economic advisors got it right either.

So to criticize Geithner for not pushing for a bigger stimulus bill in 2009 just doesn't make sense. At the time $787 billion was thought to be fairly aggressive. But more importantly, there are very real political obstacles for having made the size of the stimulus much larger. If it approached $1 trillion, a psychological boundary begins to materialize. The public can handle billions, but trillions just sounds like too much money. That's also a part of the reason why we saw $700 billion chosen for the size of the pool of funds used for the bank bailout in 2008.

A Pragmatic Approach

In all of these examples, Geithner has taken a pragmatic approach. One of the most common Republican criticisms against Geithner was his lack of private sector experience. He is a career policy guy. This can be dangerous, because if you live in policy circles for too long, your ideology can blind you to practical solutions. Despite his background, however, Geithner never fell into the partisan trap. He generally chose a practical approach.

This is the right mindset for dealing with crises. Few want to see the government bail out anyone with taxpayer money. But the chaos that would have ensued if the U.S. banking system had crumbled in 2008 was far worse than the moral hazard that a bailout created. That's why the Bush administration looked past its free market politics and intervened.

As the economy has remained in a fragile state, Geithner has taken on a similar approach, putting the most sensible solutions before the most politically convenient. And that's why nobody likes him. No matter your political persuasion, you can criticize Geithner for some policy that conflicts with your principles. But Geithner has left the politics to politicians and focused on doing the little that government could to help without making matters worse. That might not make him popular with the right or the left, but his approach should be appreciated by those of us who don't believe that either party is correct all of the time.

Vatican blasts anti-Catholic 'hate'

VATICAN CITY (AP) -- The Vatican heatedly defended Pope Benedict XVI on Tuesday, saying accusations that he helped cover up the actions of pedophile priests are part of an anti-Catholic “hate” campaign targeting the pope for his opposition to abortion and same-sex marriage.

Vatican Radio broadcast comments by two senior cardinals explaining “the motive for these attacks” on the pope. The Vatican newspaper chipped in with spirited comments from another top cardinal.

“The pope defends life and the family, based on marriage between a man and a woman, in a world in which powerful lobbies would like to impose a completely different” agenda, Spanish Cardinal Julian Herranz, head of the disciplinary commission for Holy See officials, said on the radio.

Herranz didn't identify the lobbies but “defense of life” is Vatican shorthand for anti-abortion efforts.

Also arguing that Benedict's promotion of conservative family models had provoked the so-called attacks was the Vatican's dean of the College of Cardinals, Angelo Sodano.

“By now, it's a cultural contrast,” Sodano told the Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano. “The pope embodies moral truths that aren't accepted, and so, the shortcomings and errors of priests are used as weapons against the church.”

Also rallying to Benedict's side was Italian Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, who heads Vatican City's governing apparatus.

The pope “has done all that he could have” against sex abuse by clergy of minors, Lajolo said on Vatican radio, decrying what he described as a campaign of “hatred against the Catholic church.”

Rev. Rebecca Voelkel, a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based minister in the United Church of Christ who is faith work director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, described the cardinals' comments as “diversionary counterattacks” that are an affront both to the victims of clergy abuse and to gays and lesbians.

“It makes me heartsick,” she said.

Sex abuse allegations, as well as accusations of cover-ups by diocesan bishops and Vatican officials, have swept across Europe in recent weeks. Benedict has been criticized for not halting the actions of abusive priests when he was a Vatican cardinal and earlier while he was the archbishop of Munich in his native Germany.

The European scandals in Germany, Ireland, Italy, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland are erupting after decades of abuse cases in the United States, Canada, Australia and other areas.

Benedict has ignored victims' demands that he accept responsibility for what they say is his own personal and institutional responsibility for failing to swiftly kick abusive priests out of the priesthood, or at least keep them away from children.

But he has been protected by a vanguard of senior Vatican prelates who are fending off what they contend is an orchestrated attempt to attack the leader of the world's more than 1 billion Catholics.

The Vatican No. 2 official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, rebuffed questions about the pontiff's silence on the topic, indicating that Benedict was standing firm.

“He's a strong pope,” he told reporters after arriving Tuesday in Chile. The Italian news agency ANSA quoted him as calling Benedict a “great prophet of the Third Millennium.”

Bertone, now the Holy See's secretary of state but formerly Benedict's deputy when the future pope headed the Vatican's morals office, has himself been swept up in the scandals.

During a May 1998 meeting at the Vatican, Bertone told Wisconsin bishops to halt a church trial against an ailing priest who was accused of sexually abusing 200 deaf children, according to a Vatican transcript. The priest died soon afterward.

“It's not true, it's not true! We have documented the opposite,” ANSA quoted Bertone as saying in Chile. “Let's not talk about this topic now, because otherwise we'll be here all day verifying precisely the action taken by me and by his eminence.”

Vatican Radio depicted the church as a victim.

“There are those who fear the media campaign of anti-Catholic hatred can degenerate,” it said.

The radio noted anti-Catholic graffiti on walls of a church outside Viterbo, a town near Rome, and reminded listeners that a bishop was attacked by a man during Easter Mass in Muenster, Germany. The bishop fought back with an incense bowl.

The radio likened the recent campaign to the persecution suffered by early Christian martyrs.

“The crowds, incited by the slanders of the powerful, would lynch the Christians,” the radio said.

In Munich, meanwhile, an independent lawyer hired by the Catholic Church wrapped up his investigation of abuse allegations at the southern Ettal monastery.

“The investigation clearly shows a system of abuse that lasted for decades,” Thomas Pfister said.

There were some cases of sexual abuse at Ettal, but most victims who came forward were physically abused and most cases took place before 1990, Pfister said in a telephone interview.

No surprise in media coverage of Rifqa Bary

Reading the assorted media accounts of the Rifqa Bary case, the words of Christ to His disciples come to mind: "If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you (Jn. 15:18-19)."


Although the words of Christ referenced the religious rulers of His time on this earth, there is direct application to not only Ms. Bary's situation where she ran away from home earlier this summer, fearing for her life from her Muslim parents as she had become a Christian, but life as believers know it today. It should never come as a surprise when the world acts like, well, the world. The apostle John wrote, "Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you (1 Jn. 3:13)." Christ Himself warned his followers, "Woe to you when all men speak well of you, for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets (Lk. 6:26)."


Just as it should not come as a surprise when the world hates us if we are genuinely following Christ by living our lives according to His example, it should not come as a surprise when the media treats believers as lepers. Traditional media is saturated with non-believers. Christians are scarce; respect for them and Christ even more scarce. How else could they treat us but with contempt and a condescending attitude?


Refer back to Rifqa Bary's case. CNN's most recent article maintains a veneer of even-handedness, yet quotes no one on Rifqa's side of the case while quoting her father. Meanwhile, it links to an article in Time magazine that drips with derision toward Rifqa, labeling her a liar while viciously slandering all who support her in her quest to worship Christ without fearing for her life.


It is a seeming paradox that in today's environment where traditional media is facing increased pressure from both charges of bias and an ever-shrinking revenue base as subscriptions and advertising both dwindle away that it would stubbornly cling to the kind of coverage referenced above. Yet it does. It is more addicted to its sin than any sense of what is necessary to survive.
With this as our reality, how then should we respond?


While isolation from the world is not only impractical but in direct violation of Christ's commandment to those of us who know and love Him to be His witness to the world, it is vital for believers to come together, drawing strength and encouragement from each other.


Also important is for Christians whenever possible to promote each other. The world does enough to lift up its own. We don't need to help. Many were offended when in this space Michelle Malkin was called out for employing an aggressive atheist as one of her main writers. Why? The world already wallows in its hatred of us. What justification is there for one who states they follow Jesus to inflict further hatred on fellow believers?


Finally, it is up to all believers to spread the truth. The world lies. Don't suffer its lies in silence. Use the tools at hand to counter lies with the truth. Speak accurately. Know the facts. Spread the word.


And pray for Rifqa Bary. Unfailingly.
