Researchers have developed a new nanoparticle-based strategy that could advance a promising cancer treatment approach by using tumors’ own copper supply to trigger cancer cell death.

The study, led by researchers at Guizhou Medical University and published in Biomedical Analysis, focuses on cuproptosis, a form of cell death that occurs when copper disrupts cancer cell survival mechanisms.

Cuproptosis has previously attracted interest as a possible cancer treatment approach, but many previous strategies have relied on adding external copper—raising concerns about toxicity to healthy tissues.

The new system is designed to avoid that problem by delivering a copper-binding agent directly to cancer cells and taking advantage of the copper already present inside tumors.

To create the system, researchers developed biodegradable nanoparticles made from PLGA-PEG, a material known for its safety and ability to break down in the body. They modified the surface of the nanoparticles with iRGD, a tumor-penetrating peptide designed to help guide the particles toward cancer cells.

The nanoparticles were loaded with TPEN, short for N,N,N′,N′-tetrakis(2-pyridylmethyl)ethylenediamine, a compound that binds to metal ions such as copper.

These Common Food Preservatives May Be Linked To Cancer, According To A New Study

Here's what the research found and what experts say to do next.

  • A large study followed more than 100,000 people for nearly 15 years and found links between higher intake of certain preservatives and a modestly higher cancer risk.
  • The researchers flagged a handful of additives, but experts stress the results show association, not causation, and may reflect overall ultra-processed diets.
  • If you’re concerned, focus on limiting ultra-processed foods, reading labels, and building meals around whole foods rather than panicking and purging your kitchen.

A recent study called into question the long-term health effects of common food preservatives. The study, published by BMJ Group, tracked more than 100,000 people for nearly 15 years and found that a handful of common food preservatives may be linked to a higher risk of cancer. While previous research has suggested certain preservatives can damage cells and DNA, scientists wanted to see whether these additives were associated with increased cancer risk in real-world diets.

The study examined 17 preservatives and found that only some were linked to a higher cancer risk. In particular, potassium sorbate, potassium nitrate, sodium nitrite, and sulfites were associated with an increased risk of overall cancer, as well as specific types like breast and prostate cancer. However, just because people who consumed more preservatives had a higher risk of developing cancer doesn't mean the preservatives themselves caused it—other factors could also be at play.

Over the past few years, public health organizations, academic studies, and governing bodies have linked a few foods and beverages to increased cancer risk and have labeled them c carcinogenic, something capable of causing cancer.

Here are some foods that, when consumed, have been linked to potentially increasing one's risk of getting cancer.

1/7

Alcohol has been identified as a known carcinogen.

I

t's been linked to multiple types of cancers.

Alcohol is recognized as a known carcinogen by major authorities such as the American Cancer Society and the National Institute of Health.

According to the National Cancer Institute, alcohol consumption has been linked to head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, liver cancer, and other cancers.

Your cancer risk can be affected by how much you drink, especially over time, but as a rule of thumb, the federal Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends drinking no more than one standard drink per day for women and two per day for men.

Sikh Association and Adventist Health Bakersfield Partner for Cancer Screening at Sikh Temple

4 July 2018 | Adventist Health Bakersfield is joining forces with Bakersfield Sikh Women’s Association for a preventative cancer screening. The Kaur Care Women’s Health Preventative Cancer Screening program will feature free breast exams and will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday, July 8, at Gurdwara Guru Dashmesh Darbar, a Sikh place of worship in Bakersfield, California.

This is the first in a series of screenings that will be hosted by Kaur Care. It is named after Gurbinder Kaur, a mother who passed away from cervical cancer this year at the age of 43.

According to the Bakersfield Californian, Kaur’s cancer could have been detected early if she had received a routine pap smear.

An Adventist Health press release said that discussion of health issues is often avoided in the Sikh community. The program seeks to raise awareness in the community of the need for routine cancer screenings to improve early cancer detection.

Adventist Health Bakersfield, previously San Joaquin Community Hospital, is a 254–bed facility in Bakersfield, California which serves Kern County. Adventist Health runs 20 hospitals and over 280 clinics on the West Coast and in Hawaii. It also operates home care and hospice agencies. According to the Sacramento Business Journal, it is the third-largest private company in the Sacramento region with $3.95 billion in 2016 revenue. The system is affiliated with the Adventist Church.

Danny Vierra's Cancer Diagnosis

Issue #265
June 16, 2017

I want to be totally candid with you. In January I went to the doctor to have a bleeding mole on my right back flank checked out.

It was the third time the mole had bled. I applied Can-X black salve three different times, and the last application had the most violent reaction. When I showed the area to my doctor, he was alarmed and sent me to a dermatologist, Dr. Ochoa, in Tracy, CA. The area had completely healed before I arrived. Dr. Ochoa performed a punch biopsy and sent it to the lab to be evaluated.

I was driving to Southern California for a speaking engagement when I got the call. Dr. Ochoa said: "Please come see me immediately. In 20 minutes I arrived at her office to hear the news that everybody fears: "You have malignant melanoma.

It is a T-4 and stage 2B (I explain in the video below what these mean)." Dr. Ochoa scheduled a PET scan to check if the deadly skin cancer had metastasized, and then sent me to a melanoma surgeon and a melanoma specialist at Sutter Health Pacific Medical in San Francisco.

The good news was the PET scan showed no evidence that the melanoma had spread. The surgeon, Dr. Stanley Leong, explained the cancer can be microscopic and recommended surgery. He wanted to check lymph nodes it two areas above the primary site which he would remove. Every doctor I trust told me: "Danny, do not mess around with melanoma. It is fast-growing and deadly." Howard Strauss, Charlotte Gerson's son said: "Melanoma is like a volcano, highly active and aggressive, but with the right therapy it can also die fast. I thought of Charles Lawson, a friend of mine, who died not too long ago from melanoma in his sinuses.

I am not going to share what the surgeon found right now, but it wasn't good. I am thankful I had the surgery. I explain the whole story in my new video " My Personal Healing Journey (below)" which you will find both shocking and educational. In fact, I gave four health presentations, three on cancer, at this year's Health and Healing Crusade 2017. The links are below. The audience enjoyed them all, especially the " Cancer Workshop" which I gave on Sunday morning, where I explained everything from ozone rectal insufflations, immunotherapy and medicinal mushrooms, herbal medicines, enzyme therapy, the Gerson Therapy, and more.

My diagnosis is very serious. I count it a blessing because cancer wakes you up to life. So many people are writing, Facebooking, emailing, calling, and offering prayers and support. My spirits are high and Jesus is by my side. We are walking this journey together.

I will continue teaching at our BellaVita 10-Day programs and RISEN our medical missionary school. If you would like to attend the school and learn what I am doing to fight cancer this is the program for you. Check out the details at http://www.modernmanna.org/risen
.
We only take eleven students. The dates are October 8 - 22 to become certified as a Natural Hygiene Coach and open your own lifestyle home or center.

I want no pity, but empathy is OK. I do ask for your prays. I trust the Lord will be glorified by my healing. The doctor's main concern right now is that there is no recurrence within the next two years. I am strong in faith, trusting God in the journey, and know that my true healing is only through His divine power. I believe the Lord allowed this trial to get me to make some serious changes in my life. To lessen the stress, for sure. Nothing else would have persuaded me to make the needed changes. Healing on all levels, physically, mentally, and spiritually.

My health has continually declined over the past several years due to constant high stress. I have identified the areas of my life that are most stressful and am taking the necessary steps to eliminate them. I will NOT be traveling and speaking for at least one year or more. My health program runs from 6:30 AM to 7 PM seven days a week. It is not easy, but my daughter Mia helps me every day making my organic juices, Gerson soup, specially prepared food, and taking care of other duties.
Enough said for now. I hope you enjoy the cancer videos (below) and share them with others. I will be posting all the Health Crusade videos for my subscribers from the speakers for 2017 including Dr. Tim Riesenberger, Christian Berdahl, and Ron Woolsey, who spoke openly about homosexuality and the power of God to change.
If you would like to send me a letter or comment, email me at danny@modernmanna.org.

Thank you again for your prayers.
God bless you,
Danny Vierra

Note:

I found out today 12/9/2017, that Danny Vierra is extremely sick, and a mutual friend of ours asks for prayers so that he may peacefully rest from further suffering.

Please keep Danny Vierra in you prayers.

Thank you.

Vice President Joe Biden, who has traveled to some America's leading medical centers in recent weeks as part of what he has called his moonshot to cure cancer, will soon take his quest to the Vatican.

Biden will address a major conference on the progress of regenerative medicine in Vatican City on April 29, the vice president's office said Wednesday.

The gathering, hosted by the Stem for Life Foundation and the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Culture, will also draw leading physicians, ethicists and philanthropists to discuss the potential of emerging research to treat cancer and other diseases. The initiative has been championed by Pope Francis, who worked as a chemist before he entered the priesthood and has written in support of scientific progress.

Biden will be the latest leading U.S. political figure to attend a major gathering at the Vatican. Sen. Bernie Sanders, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, will travel there this week to address a separate summit on social, economic and environmental issues.

Other details on the vice president's three-day trip to Rome and the Vatican, including a possible meeting with Francis, had not yet been determined, his office said.

Biden, the nation's first Catholic vice president, attended Francis' papal inauguration in 2013 and attended multiple events during the Catholic leader's visit to the U.S. last fall, including his address to Congress and departure from Philadelphia after the World Meeting of Families there.

Biden has praised Francis' message of inclusion, writing in Time magazine that the pope "put a welcome sign on the front door of the Church." Biden has also spoken of Francis' personal empathy toward him and his family since the death last May of Biden’s eldest son, Beau, and the role of his faith in coping with personal tragedy.

The vice president's effort to cure cancer, first announced by Biden as he said last fall that he would not run for president, was formally launched this year in President Obama's State of the Union address. Biden has since traveled to Duke University, the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University and other research centers as part of his effort to bring stakeholders together in search of a cure.

In Madrid, Museo del Jamón, which isn't a museum but a chain of bars, sells special ham backpacks, for carrying a whole ham leg — hoof and all — around town at the holidays. Spanish airports have special luggage rules for them. A leg of ham is the most popular family gift at Christmas. Every self-respecting Spanish household has ajamonera — a kitchen countertop rack on which to mount and cut slices off a ham leg.

"It's the ingredient we use most in Spain — essential to our cooking and to our lives," says Jesus Engamo, a ham cutter who has worked at the museum for 35 years. "We can't live without it!"

THE SALT
Bad Day For Bacon: Processed Meats Cause Cancer, WHO Says

So when the World Health Organization warned in October that eating 50 grams a day of processed meat — defined as including anything cured or salted, like Spanish ham — can raise your risk of cancer, Spaniards were aghast. (On average, Spaniards eat 140 grams of pork a day, though there's no official breakdown of how much of that is cured or processed versus fresh.)

"I think it's a lie! It's what other countries say when they're jealous of Spain because we have the ham," says Asunción Claudios, 25, sharing a plate of jamón ibérico with friends at the Museo.

She closes her eyes as she places a paper-thin, almost translucent slice of jamón on her tongue. It's got to be a conspiracy, she says.

i

A ham cutter demonstrates how to carefully slice Spanish jamón at the Don Jamón tapas bar on Madrid's Gran Vía.Lauren Frayer for NPR

"I'm inclined to say Germany is behind this," she says, straight-faced. "Sure, they have sausage there — but it's nojamón. Other countries are jealous."

There is no evidence whatsoever that Germany or any pork-producing competitor put the WHO up to its cancer warnings. And Spain's ham industry has balked at its products being described as unhealthy, lumped in with other processed meat, like hot dogs.

"My first reaction was, 'I can't believe it!' We have a lot of studies that say just the opposite," says Ricardo Mosteo, president of the Denomination of Origin (D.O.), a ham quality-assurance board, in the region of Teruel, south of Madrid.

Last summer, a scientific study funded by the meat industry of Andalusia, another Spanish region, found that cured Spanish ham is free of the toxoplasmosis parasite found in other uncooked meats, and thus safe for pregnant women.

Groups like the Spanish Jamón Serrano Foundation claim local ham is ideal for people on diets, the elderly, or athletes. The group's website says jamón cuts cholesterol and boosts childhood growth and athletic performance.

NPR could not independently verify the research methods or conclusions of those studies.

But with the WHO findings, Mosteo says his phone has been ringing off the hook, with queries from journalists as well as confused ham consumers.

"I wasn't very worried, but then journalists started phoning me, [asking] 'What do you think?' " he says. "And I realized, OK, this is going to be a problem for us."

The sale of ham legs alone is a $1.65 billion industry in Spain, and 50 percent of sales happen in the weeks before Christmas, Mosteo says.

He predicts a marketing shift, with Spanish ham producers describing their products as organic, to be consumed in small quantities, as a luxury item. But Mosteo says there's been no perceptible drop in ham sales so far this holiday season.

Back on Madrid's Gran Vía, the Méson El Jamón — the house of ham — has a pork leg wearing a Santa hat on its storefront. Inside, another ham specialist is choppingjamón serrano for croquetas — bechamel dumplings.

"Here we're actually selling more ham since the WHO warning," says Angel Contera. "There's an urgency to enjoy it now. If jamón is bad for us, what will we live on?"

He sighs and puts down his knife. He's taking a break — going out for a smoke.

Ellen G. White Statements Concerning Cancer (and Meat Consumption)

First Mention of Cancer—1864

I have been shown that children who practice self-indulgence previous to puberty, or the period of merging into manhood and womanhood, must pay the penalty of nature’s violated laws at that critical period.

Many sink into an early grave, while others have sufficient force of constitution to pass this ordeal. If the practice is continued from the ages of 15 and upward, nature will protest against the abuse she has suffered, and continues to suffer, and will make them pay the penalty for the transgression of her laws, especially from the ages of 30 to 45, by numerous pains in the system and various diseases such as affection of the liver and lungs, neuralgia, rheumatism, affection of the spine, diseased kidneys, and cancerous humors. Some of nature’s fine machinery gives way, leaving a heavier task for the remaining to perform, which disorders nature’s fine arrangement, and there is often a sudden breaking down of the constitution, and death is the result....

Females possess less vital force than the other sex, and are deprived very much of the bracing, invigorating air by their in-doors life. The results of self-abuse in them is seen in various diseases such as catarrh, dropsy, headache, loss of memory and sight, great weakness in the back and loins, affections of the spine, the head often decays inwardly. Cancerous humor, which would lay dormant in the system their lifetime, is inflamed and commences its eating, destructive work. The mind is often utterly ruined and insanity takes place.—An Appeal to Mothers, 27

Calomel and Cancer

My attention was then called to still another case. I was introduced into the sickroom of a young man who was in a high fever. A physician was standing by the bedside of the sufferer with a portion of medicine taken from a vial upon which was written Calomel. He administered this chemical poison, and a change seemed to take place, but not for the better....

The third case was again presented before me. It was that of the young man to whom was administered calomel. He was a great sufferer. His lips were dark and swollen. His gums were inflamed. His tongue was thick and swollen, and the saliva was running from his mouth in large quantities. The intelligent gentleman before mentioned looked sadly upon the sufferer and said:

“This is the influence of mercurial preparations. This young man had remaining sufficient nervous energy to commence a warfare upon this intruder, this drug-poison, to attempt to expel it from the system. Many have not sufficient life forces left to arouse to action, and nature is overpowered and ceases her efforts, and the victim dies.”…

The third case was again presented before me, that of the young man to whom had been administered calomel. He was a pitiful sufferer. His limbs were crippled, and he was greatly deformed. He stated that his sufferings were beyond description, and life was to him a great burden. The gentleman whom I have repeatedly mentioned looked upon the sufferer with sadness and pity, and said:

“This is the effect of calomel. It torments the system as long as there is a particle left in it. It ever lives, not losing its properties by its long stay in the living system. It inflames the joints, and often sends rottenness into the bones. It frequently manifests itself in tumors, ulcers, and cancers years after it has been introduced into the system.”—Selected Messages 2:445, 447, 449.

“Cancerous Germs”

Those who use flesh foods little know what they are eating. Often if they could see the animals when living and know the quality of the meat they eat, they would turn from it with loathing. People are continually eating flesh that is filled with tuberculous and cancerous germs. Tuberculosis, cancer, and other fatal diseases are thus communicated.—Ministry of Healing (1905).

Meat Eating and Cancer

The tables of many professed Christian women are daily set with a variety of dishes which irritate the stomach and produce a feverish condition of the system. Flesh meats constitute the principal article of food upon the tables of some families, until their blood is filled with cancerous and scrofulous humors. Their bodies are composed of what they eat. But when suffering and disease come upon them, it is considered an affliction of Providence.—Testimonies for the Church 3:563 (1875).

Cancers, tumors, and all inflammatory diseases are largely caused by meat eating.

From the light God has given me, the prevalence of cancers and tumors is largely due to gross living on dead flesh. I sincerely and prayerfully hope that, as a physician, you will not forever be blinded on this subject, for blindness is mingled with a want of moral courage to deny your appetite, to lift the cross, which means to take up the very duties that cut across the natural appetites and passions....

I have the subject presented to me in different aspects. The mortality caused by meat eating is not discerned; if it were, we would hear no more arguments and excuses in favor of the indulgence of the appetite for dead flesh. We have plenty of good things to satisfy hunger without bringing corpses upon our table to compose our bill of fare.—Medical Ministry, 278.

The meat diet is the serious question. Shall human beings live on the flesh of dead animals? The answer, from the light that God has given, is No, decidedly No. Health reform institutions should educate on this question. Physicians who claim to understand the human organism ought not to encourage their patients to subsist on the flesh of dead animals. They should point out the increase of disease in the animal kingdom. The testimony of examiners is that very few animals are free from disease, and that the practice of eating largely of meat is contracting diseases of all kinds—cancers, tumors, scrofula, tuberculosis, and numbers of other like affections.—Counsels on Diet and Foods, 388.

We do not mark out any precise line to be followed in diet, but we do say that in countries where there are fruits, grains, and nuts in abundance, flesh food is not the right food for God’s people. I have been instructed that flesh food has a tendency to animalize the nature, to rob men and women of that love and sympathy which they should feel for everyone, and to give the lower passions control over the higher powers of the being. If meat eating were ever healthful, it is not safe now. Cancers, tumors, and pulmonary diseases are largely caused by meat eating.—Testimonies for the Church 9:159.

Pork and Cancer

God expressly commanded the children of Israel not to eat swine’s flesh. The heathen used this meat as an article of food. God prohibited the Hebrews the use of swine’s flesh because it was hurtful. It would fill the system with humors, and in that warm climate often produced leprosy. Its influence upon the system in that climate was far more injurious than in a colder climate. But God never designed the swine to be eaten under any circumstances....

In order to preserve health, temperance in all things is necessary. Temperance in labor, temperance in eating and drinking. Because of intemperance a great amount of misery has been brought upon the human family. The eating of pork has produced scrofula, leprosy, and cancerous humors. Pork-eating is still causing the most intense suffering to the human race.—Spiritual Gifts 4a:146

Those who subsist largely upon flesh meats inflame the stomach, thereby the blood becomes torpid and impure, headaches and indisposition follow. The system is filled with humors; fevers, scrofula and cancers are the consequences. Especially is this true of those who eat swine’s flesh. Yet so great is the tendency to ignore these evils that few can be brought to realize the true effects of this sort of diet upon the human system.—The Signs of the Times, January 6, 1876.

Physical Injury and Cancer

Satan is constantly devising some new style of dress that shall prove an injury to physical and moral health, and he exults when he sees professed Christians eagerly accepting the fashions that he has invented. The amount of physical suffering created by unnatural and unhealthful dress cannot be estimated. Many have become life-long invalids through their compliance with the demands of fashion. Displacements and deformities, cancers and other terrible diseases, are among the evils resulting from fashionable dress.—Testimonies for the Church 4:634, 635.

Worship in Pink to be Held October 27

FORT WORTH—Susan G. Komen® Greater Fort Worth announced today it will partner with local churches and places of worship on October 27 to educate women about breast cancer in honor of national "Breast Cancer Awareness Month.”

Komen Greater Fort Worth and The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders will provide packets of information to places of worship in Tarrant, Parker, Johnson and Hood counties to distribute to its membership during the month of October in an effort to educate congregations on breast health and breast cancer.

In 2012, Komen Greater Fort Worth partnered with more than 110 places of worship to educate 12,000 women.

Congregations interested in participating in Worship in Pink should contact Amy Hatfield at ahatfield@komengreaterfw.org or 817.735.8580 before September 28. Interested organizations may also register online at http://www.komengreaterfortworth.org/get-involved/Worship-in-Pink/.

"Our goal is to educate as many people as possible about breast health and the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer,” said Craig Schaefer, executive director of the Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Affiliate. "By partnering with local places of worship, we are able to reach a huge amount of people in one day. We encourage everyone to wear pink to show their support, to honor survivors, celebrate their courage and to remember those who have lost their battle with breast cancer.”

More than 2.9 million women and men are surviving breast cancer – a living testament to the power of society and science to save lives. Early detection is key. Breast cancer, if caught early, has a 98 percent survival rate. Susan G. Komen Greater Fort Worth Affiliate’s effort to educate and assist as many individuals as possible in the fight against breast cancer would be impossible without the support of the many community partners and individuals who raise funds for the local Affiliate.

Many activities are taking place in October for "Breast Cancer Awareness Month.” Find an event near you by visiting http://www.komengreaterfortworth.org/get-involved/komen-activities/.

Susan G. Komen®, the global leader of the breast cancer movement, has invested more than $1.9 billion in research and life-saving community programs since its inception in 1982, and is the only breast cancer organization with a comprehensive approach that touches research, advocacy and community support. Thanks to events like the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, and generous contributions from partners, sponsors and fellow supporters, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has become the largest source in the world of non-profit funds dedicated to the fight against breast cancer. The Greater Fort Worth Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is one of 123 national affiliates of the parent organization. Chartered in July of 1992 by Rozanne Rosenthal, in honor of her close friend and three-time breast-cancer-survivor Joan Katz, the Greater Fort Worth Affiliate uses 75 percent of all money raised to fund treatment and prevention projects for women in Tarrant, Parker, Johnson and Hood counties.

The first Komen Greater Fort Worth Race for the Cure was held in 1993 and had 1,800 participants. Today, the organization boasts more than 10,000 participants each year, and serves as the largest 5K Race in the county.

To date, Komen Greater Fort Worth has raised more than $21 million for breast cancer treatment, prevention and research.

DuPage-area hospital staffs dance for cancer awareness

6/22/2011 9:28 AM

Dr. Brian Ayuste does a little break dancing Tuesday at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital. Dr. Ayuste and others were creating a musical video that organizers hope to use as part of a breast cancer awareness program.

By Megan Bannister ..

Flash mobs recently have gotten a bad rap around Chicago.

But on Tuesday, employees from four area Adventist hospitals set out to increase breast cancer awareness with a much more lighthearted, positive and true-to-the-idea take on the flash mob concept.

At 8 a.m., as the electronic beats of Taio Cruz's song “Higher” echoed through the halls of Adventist Bolingbrook Medical Center, more than 100 employees from all four hospitals, many dressed in pink, converged on the lobby to do a little dancing.

The physicians and other staff members from Bolingbrook, Hinsdale, LaGrange and GlenOaks were creating what they hope will be a popular and effective music video that will encourage more women to get mammograms.

“Everyone has been so enthusiastic and willing to chime in and take part,” Jeannine Arias, regional director in charge of breast cancer services, said.

Physicians and employees donning pink scrubs, sunglasses, feather boas and Hula Hoops boogied to the beat for video cameras.

Throughout the morning, participants pranced through the OR, danced around the ER and shimmied in the cath lab. To ensure everyone could participate, the flash mob was repeated throughout the day, Arias said.

The video compilation will be used in the Adventist campaign “Stomp Out Breast Cancer” and be released to YouTube in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

While the crazy outfits and dancing is fun, the larger aim of the project is health related. The Adventist campaign encourages all women 40 and older to get annual mammograms in the hopes of catching more cases early on.

“We wanted to extend our reach and let everyone know what services we provide,” Arias said. “It's a nice way to see the hospital and what we offer without having to go there.”

“This is all about getting women screened early,” Dr. Jason Goliath, medical director of the Bolingbrook Hospital Breast Center, said in a written statement. “We see younger people who don't think they need to get screened, but it makes all the difference when it comes to survival rates.”

Though there are more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors in the United States, one in 35 women will die of breast cancer.

Until there is a more effective cure, organizers of Tuesday's event said, the employees of Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital will keep on dancing.

Great American Smokeout lights a spark to quit the habit

Jim Steinberg, Staff Writer

Highland resident Dave Criner has been a smoker for 45 years.

The 70-year-old retired schoolteacher and former Marine has seen this habit curtail his active lifestyle and he has grown weary of enduring society's relentless assault on his behavior.

"I'm being crowded out by society," Criner said. "You go to a restaurant and you have to stand outside to smoke. And people look at you like some kind of pariah."

Today is the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout. For the past 34 years, the day has served as a springboard to get smokers thinking about making a plan to quit or just quitting altogether on that day.

Public health officials say smoking is the leading preventable cause of death and illness in the U.S. and is a leading cause of numerous kinds of cancers, heart attacks and other health problems.

Criner's decision was based on his own internal clock. Nov. 30 is the day he's selected to stop smoking.

For about a month, he's been tapering down from two packs a day to one pack, maybe a little less on some days.

He logs every cigarette he smokes these days.

Society's impact on his lifestyle was symbolically underscored on a trip to one of Hawaii's less populated islands. He stood across the street from the airport in the designated smoking zone. The uncovered parcel of real estate was the only spot around where it was raining.

There were family considerations for Criner as well.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When he smoked outside of his home or at the home of his grandchildren, "they would follow me outside," he said.

And the final straw, he said, was when he was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease, which limited his ability to walk more than 200 yards.

That limitation forced him to cancel a cruise with his wife to the Pacific Northwest and Canada. He said he couldn't have done the walking required to participate in various port excursions.

And continued smoking will interfere with the medication his doctor prescribed. His artery disease puts him at increased risk for a heart attack or a stroke.

While Criner said he will be leaving the ranks of smokers soon, the number of smokers in the United States to be increasing.

According to a recently released national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey, cigarette smoking rose slightly last year for the first time in nearly 15 years.

An estimated 20.6percent, (46million) of U.S. adults were cigarette smokers, up from 19.8percent in 2007. But the difference was not regarded as statistically significant.

In the 10 years from 1998 to 2008, the proportion of U.S. adults who were smokers declined 3.5percent, from 24.1percent to 20.6percent, the CDC said.

Beckie Moore Flati, spokeswoman for the American Cancer Society's Inland Empire office in Riverside, said the Great American Smokeout can be a milestone for someone who stops smoking for the day.

"If they can do it for a day, they can do it for a week and for a month," she said.

Researchers say that quitting smoking can increase life expectancy - smokers who quit at age 35 gain an average of eight years life expectancy, those who quit at age 55 gain about five years and even long-term smokers who quit at age 65 gain three years, says the American Cancer Society.

Ernie Medina Jr., a preventive care specialist at Beaver Medical Group in Redlands, said that after a smoker stops for a month, the physical addiction to nicotine subsides.

But treatment must continue to address two other factors that contribute to cigarette dependency, behavioral and psychological.

Many former smokers revert back to the calming effects of nicotine when they encounter stress - sometimes years after they quit, said Medina, who teaches smoking cessation classes and works individually with people wanting to quit.

But nonsmokers have stress in their lives, too, Medina said. And they have learned to cope in other ways.

So former smokers must find other ways to cope with stress, such as exercise, Medina said.

Former smokers may also revert back to smoking in a social setting, when someone, for example, offers them a cigarette.

Usually, that one-time break from their successful smoking avoidance leads to a person's return to smoking.

"I can think of only one time in 16 years where that didn't happen," he said.

But a former smoker's return to smoking is nothing to be ashamed of, he said. It should be a lesson.
