2 Pentagon Police Officers Shot Outside D.C. Metro Station

Thursday, March 04, 2010

March 4: The scene outside the Pentagon Metro station after two people were shot.

A gunman opened fire at the subway entrance to Pentagon complex Thursday evening, wounding two Pentagon police officers, officials said.

The gunman was also shot and in custody, said Pentagon Police Chief Richard Keevil.

Keevil said the man was calm as he approached the officers at the main entrance around 6:40 p.m.

They asked to see his pass to enter the building.

"He reached into his pocket and they assumed he was going to get out his pass and he just started shooting," Keevil said.

The officers immediately fired back.

A Pentagon source tells Fox News the gunman was shot in the head, but Keevil wouldn't confirm that.

The officers' injured were non-life threatening and described by Keevil as being "grazed." The gunman's injuries were critical he said.

Keevil declined to identify the officers or the suspect.

The trio were taken to George Washington University Hospital's emergency room.

"Fortunately there were no other injuries," said Keevil. "A lot of people are coming and going at that time of the night."

The Pentagon was on lockdown for a short while.

The Blue-Yellow line at the Pentagon station is closed.
