Randy Travis gives his all at Denver heart benefit

The 30th anniversary Heart of Hearts Gala may have been the last stop on Randy Travis' 60-city tour, but it was obvious the country music superstar had saved the best for last.
A two-time Country Music Association Male Vocalist of the Year, Travis has had 16 of his songs make it to No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Country list. And he sang most of them in the 90-plus minutes that he performed for the 550 who attended this annual benefit for cardiac care services at Avista, Littleton, Parker and Porter Adventist Hospitals.
Even those who thought they didn't like country music left the Sheraton Denver Downtown buzzing about how much they'd enjoyed the auction, dinner and show emceed by 9News anchor Mark Koebrich.
In keeping with the headliner's country roots, the decor had a down-home feel with bales of hay, calico and old-fashioned lanterns. And cowboy boots were what was used to hold the prize certificates offered in the pre-dinner mystery gift sale.
Special guests included Bill and Betty Ruth Hewit, whose Hewit Charitable Trust has been the Heart of Hearts Gala entertainment sponsor since Year One; cardiologist Mark Sheehan; and heart attack survivor Cathy Hunter.
Others joining in the fun were American Furniture Warehouse boss Jake Jabs and his wife, Ann; promoter Chuck Morris and his wife, Becky; Randy Haffner; LaFawn Biddle; Alicia and Dr. Wayne Guerra; Matt and Suzanne Anctil; Sharon and Greg Pappas; Holly and Dr. Sean Griggs; Randy Berner and Sarah Ellis; Kris and Karen Ordelheide; Jonathan Bach and Gina Russo; Robert Spina and Dr. Karen Zarlengo; and Darrell Schulte, chairman of the host Rocky Mountain Adventist Healthcare Foundation, with his wife, Cherrelyn.Coming right up.
"Under the Light of the Moon" is the theme and Karen Brody, Alessandra Schulein, Shirley Smith, Mike Hughes, Ben Schulein and Marlis Smith are the chairs for Opera Colorado's Gala 2010. The black-tie affair starts at 6 p.m. Friday in the Ellie Caulkins Opera House. Following cocktails and a silent auction, there's a program starring soprano Inna Dukach, tenor Richard Troxell and baritone Elliot Madore, with a Kevin Taylor-catered dinner and dancing to round out the night. Call 303-778-7086. ... On Saturday night, former astronaut Eugene Cernan is honored at the Spreading Wings Gala: An Evening with the Last Man on the Moon. It's at Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum; Joanne Maguire is the honorary chair and guests are encouraged to wear astronaut, aviator or cocktail attire.
