LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR - VOCATIONS

Vocations - Little Sisters of the Poor

Religious Life

If you feel Jesus is calling you to religious life as Little Sisters of the Poor, you would follow a program of spiritual formation

Step 1 –Postulancy– During this time lasting between 6-9 months you would live work and pray with a community and experience guidance in prayer. A little sister guides the postulants during this time helping them to discern Jesus’ call in their lives.

Step 2 –Novitiate- Often described as a “School of love”, this period of intense spiritual formation lasting two years takes place in one of our ten novitiates throughout the world. One lives the spirit of the evangelical counsels (poverty, chastity and obedience) and experiences the life of a Little Sister of the Poor. The novices receive spiritual direction during this time enabling them to grow in their knowledge and love of Jesus. Two periods of apostolic experience take place during the novitiate so that the novices can appreciate the bond between meeting Jesus in prayer and the elderly person (hospitality our fourth vow).

Step 3 – Temporary Profession- made initially for two years and then renewed for a further three, this time of temporary vows includes at least two years of apostolic experience in our homes for the elderly and a year of doctrinal study to deepen awareness of Church teachings.

Step 4 – Perpetual Profession- Little Sisters from around the globe gather together at our Mother house, La Tour St Joseph, in Brittany, France, for a year of deepening spiritual formation. The sisters experience a 15 day contemplative Lectio divina session during the year.

Step 5 -Ongoing Formation- The work of deepening our spiritual life is ongoing and each little sisters is responsible for taking the time to nourish the life of Christ within her. This may be achieved by keeping abreast of Vatican documents, sessions on spirituality and periods of spiritual renewal arranged according to the sisters needs.
