President Obama found an impossibly weird way to salute White House pastry chef Bill Yosses during a reception in honor of LGBT Pride Month yesterday. I had forgotten that a whole month is devoted to the celebration of LGBT Pride. The Library of Congress joins the celebration here and here.
Obama noted that Bill was there with his husband and that he (Bill) would be leaving his position at the White House. Obama put it this way: “Finally, I have to mention a man who’s made life at the White House very sweet, this is one of Michelle and my favorite people, our executive pastry chef, Bill Yosses, who is here tonight with his husband Charlie.”
He couldn’t leave it at that. Obama added: “This is the problem. We call Bill the Crust Master, because his pies, I don’t know what he does, whether he puts crack in them, or…”
Michelle Obama seemed not entirely comfortable with Obama’s tribute to the Crust Master. She felt compelled to clarify Obama’s tribute: “No, he doesn’t. There is no crack in our pie.”
As the reviewer wrote of the then new Bob Dylan album in the first edition of the Rolling Stone Record Guide: “Weird beyond immediate comment.”
