A Ben Carson volunteer died Tuesday after a van carrying a Carson staffer and other volunteers wrecked after it hit a patch of ice on an Iowa road.

Braden Joplin, a 25-year-old volunteer, died from injuries suffered in the accident, according to the hospital he was taken to, The Des Moines Register reported.

Earlier Tuesday, Carson paused his presidential campaign.

The Carson campaign said a van carrying a staffer and three volunteers, including Joplin, flipped after hitting ice and then was struck by another vehicle. Joplin, was transported to a trauma center in Omaha while the others were checked out at a hospital in Atlantic, Iowa, and released.

"Dr. Carson is asking people to join him in prayer for all the individuals and families involved," the campaign said in a statement earlier in the day.

Carson was in South Carolina Tuesday, where he had speaking engagements in Charleston and Mount Pleasant. He planned to travel to Omaha Tuesday evening.
