Hillary Clinton cited a “constitutional right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” in an interview that aired Wednesday with Steve Harvey, apparently forgetting those words are in the Declaration of Independence. Clinton, who’s taken a hard left turn on gun control in her bid for the Democratic nomination, discussed her stance on the issue and cited popular support for the gun measures she’s pursuing in front of the friendly studio audience. No one will take your gun away if you’re a responsible gun owner, Clinton said. “We’ve got to say to the gun lobby, you know what, there’s a constitutional right for people to own guns, but there’s also a constitutional right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness that enables us to have a safe country where we are able to protect our children and others from this senseless gun violence,” Clinton said. “Absolutely,” Harvey said.
Clinton had company up on the stage. Harvey memorably flubbed the true winner of the Miss Universe contest when he hosted it in December, reading out the wrong name before having to correct himself. The 1776 Declaration of Independence reads, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.”
