Minneapolis police block traffic following a fatal shooting on Tuesday.

One person was killed and six others were hurt in a shooting Tuesday afternoon near East Lake Street and Interstate 35W in south Minneapolis.
Hours later, two people died in two other shootings in the city. Police said early Wednesday that they don’t yet know if any of the shootings are connected.
Catholic school shooting
At a news conference Tuesday following the first shooting, Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the shooter walked up to a group of people who were standing at the corner of East 29th Street and Clinton Avenue South and opened fire.
One man died from his injuries; five other men and a woman were injured in the gunfire. Some of the victims ran away and took shelter in nearby businesses
O’Hara said the attack was not random, and the killer fired about 30 rounds from a high-powered rifle before fleeing.
“It’s more a weapon of war than something to be on the street here,” O’Hara said. “Just the damage that was done to the bodies of some of these victims is unspeakable. And thankfully we don't have more people that are dead from this incident.”
The shooting happened outside Cristo Rey Jesuit High School while students were inside. O’Hara did not say if anyone affiliated with the school was involved in the incident.
In an update Wednesday afternoon — from the scene of a separate mass shooting at a Catholic church in south Minneapolis — O’Hara said two people have been arrested “for assisting in” the Tuesday afternoon shooting.
“We have not gotten the shooter yet, but we believe we have two people under arrest that were present with the shooter when that happened, and we’re making significant progress,” O’Hara said.

Two other fatal shootings

Authorities said it happened at about 8 p.m. near 27th Street and Third Avenue South. Officers responding to reports of a shooting found a man in his 20s with gunshot wounds; he later died at a hospital. Police said it appears the man was outside when he was shot.
Another man with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds possibly related to that shooting was later dropped off at a hospital. O’Hara said Wednesday that a person believed to be connected to the shooting is in custody.
And just after 2 a.m. Wednesday, a man died in another fatal shooting, on the 800 block of Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis. Police said it appears the man was with a group on the sidewalk when someone opened fire at close range, then fled on foot.
Another man suffered a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. There have been no arrests in that case.
The names of the victims have not been released. Police said early Wednesday that they don’t yet know if any of the incidents are connected.
“The level of gun violence across the city within the last day is deeply unsettling,” O’Hara said in a statement following the third shooting. “Across three separate multiple-victim shootings, eight people have been injured by gunfire and three have lost their lives. Our thoughts are with the victims who lost their lives, with those who are now fighting to recover from their injuries, and with the families and community members who are affected.”
O’Hara said the department “will aggressively pursue every lead” — and he urged anyone with information on the shootings to contact police.
