Hurricane Isaias made landfall in Destin, Florida late Thursday night — packing 105 MPH sustained winds, a devastating 9-foot storm surge, and catastrophic flash flooding across the Gulf Coast. As of this morning, 668,000 customers are without power across Florida and Alabama, with Mobile County and Baldwin County taking the hardest hit. Flash Flood Emergencies were issued across southern Okaloosa County as 4–7 inches of rain dropped in just hours. Storm surge warnings remain active from the Alabama-Florida border to Grayton Beach. Isaias is now pushing north through Alabama at 20 MPH — tornado watches, additional flooding, and downed power lines are still active threats RIGHT NOW.
This is the first U.S. hurricane landfall in two years — and it happened fast. Isaias went from a tropical depression to a Category 2 in just 48 hours, thanks to record-warm Gulf waters and collapsed wind shear. The Gulf was basically rocket fuel.
⚠️ Turn Around, Don’t Drown. 12 inches of water can float your car. 2 feet will sweep away an SUV. Do NOT drive around barricades — the road may be completely washed out underneath.
Stay safe. Monitor weather.gov, floridadisaster.org, or ema.alabama.gov for real-time updates.
Lesson learned: hurricane season isn’t over until it’s over. One quiet season can end in 48 hours. Have your go-bag ready, know your evacuation zone, and never wait for the last warning.
