It's A Harvest Celebration For Seventh Day Adventists
By Jason Linetsky
Canarsiens joined together as they sang hymns of thanks for the bountiful harvest this year and, fittingly, "The Boys of Beulah" let their voices be heard in testimony. Right: Many came to purchase (and admire) home grown products. Photos by Jason Linetsky
Baskets of tomatoes and peppers, bushels of various herbs, and a slew of pineapples and coconuts were laid out across tables inside the Beulah 7th Day Adventist Temple Sunday to pay tribute to God for a successful year of harvests.
Representatives of various churches around Canarsie and other members of the community gathered with home grown produce and items made with organic foods to celebrate their harvests in the 10th anniversary of this event.
Among the events of the evening, a prayer session was held to show love of the Lord for giving a bountiful harvest to his people followed by a presentation by the children of the church explaining the importance of various fruits in daily living. The Boys of Beulah, the Beulah Church Choir, and some of the church's children gathered at the altar to sing a few songs from the bible signifying the importance of celebrating the harvest each year. Finally, to add a bit of comedy to the night's festivities, the head superintendent of the church and organizer of the celebration, Veronica Arthurs, received plenty of laughs from food-related riddles.
Once the ceremony was completed, all in attendance were invited to head outside the church for a farmer's market featuring all foods from the tables as well as homemade ginger beer, ice cream, cakes, and breads.
The Beulah 7th Day Adventist Temple is located at 10201 Seaview Avenue between & East 101st & East 102nd Street. For information please call (718) 763-7437.
