By Lydia Parris

Joyce Portela (pictured) joined Washington Adventist Hospital (WAH) as chief operating officer (COO) and campus administrator. Portela was formerly the COO at Shawnee Mission Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan., and Tennessee Christian Medical Center in Madison, Tenn. She has worked for more than 20 years in Adventist hospitals in California, Florida, Kansas, and Tennessee.

Portela is a mother, musician, and worship leader. She is also a member of the Seventh-day Adventist denomination, currently seeking a church home in the Washington, D.C., Metropolitan area. Portela has taken three mission trips to Cape Town, South Africa, in support of the Living Hope organization, which is dedicated to addressing the HIV/AIDS pandemic through accurate medical approaches and faith-based initiatives.

“Joyce is deeply committed to our mission and leading Washington Adventist Hospital in continually delivering safe, high-quality, compassionate care as the hospital also works to expand access to care for the communities we serve as part of our Vision for Expanded Access,” says Jere Stocks, WAH president.

Washington Adventist Hospital has been serving its communities in Montgomery and Prince George’s County for more than 100 years.

“I am proud of our hospital’s long legacy of healing and feel humbled and privileged to be part of the continued mission to improve the health of people and communities through a ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing,” comments Portela.
