The government of Saudi Arabia is now employing 10 lobbying firms in Washington as it grapples with a new law that would allow families of victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks to sue the country.

The Saudis have hired King & Spalding to provide “advocacy and legal services” related to the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, according to a contract filed with the Justice Department. It’s the fifth firm to be hired by the country in recent weeks.

Congress handed President Obama his first veto override last week, turning the 9/11 bill into law. But top Republican lawmakers are already discussing rewriting the law to address some of the unintended consequences.

Saudi Arabia hired four other firms at the end of September, right before the White House issued its veto. Heavyweights Squire Patton Boggs, Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck and Glover Park Group, along with Sphere Consulting, were added to the payroll.

Unlike the other firms, King & Spalding inked its contract through Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Commerce and Investment. The agreement does not discuss fees or the duration of the work, saying those details were still being worked out.

A review of disclosures by The Hill shows that Saudi Arabia is now paying upward of $1.3 million in lobbying fees per month — including payments to its other firms, Hogan Lovells, MSLGroup, DLA Piper, Podesta Group and BGR Group. Targeted Victory, a Republican ad firm, is working through a subcontract with MSLGroup.

Earlier this year, Saudi Arabia threatened to sell off hundreds of billions of dollars of American assets should the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act become law.

Obama has warned that the law allowing Americans to sue countries or individuals suspected of sponsoring terrorism could also ultimately open up Americans to lawsuits by foreign governments.

Companies like Boeing, Dow Chemical, General Electric and Chevron also pressed lawmakers not to vote for the override, according to Politico.

Almost immediately after the vote to sustain the legislation into law, overturning Obama’s veto, leaders began discussing ways to change it.

“I would like to think there’s a way we can fix so that our service members do not have legal problems overseas while still protecting the rights of the 9/11 victims,” Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) said last week after the successful veto override.

Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said that he spoke to Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir last week, according to Bloomberg, and the Saudis are open to tweaking the law with new legislation following the November elections.

Prior to the law, families of terrorist attack victims could only sue governments thought to be responsible if the country was a State Department-designated sponsor of terrorism. Saudi Arabia does not have that designation.

Fifteen of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 hailed from Saudi Arabia. Critics have long suspected that the kingdom’s government may have either directly or indirectly supported the attacks, something the Saudis vehemently deny.

Jesuits gathered in Rome to elect a new superior general were invited to draw on “the audacity of the improbable” during a Mass to open their general congregation.

The order’s voting delegates, the outgoing Jesuit superior, Fr Adolfo Nicolas, and Jesuits living in Rome celebrated the Mass at Rome’s Church of the Gesu on October 2, before the tomb of their founder, St Ignatius of Loyola.

The principal celebrant at the Mass was Fr Bruno Cadore, superior general of the Dominicans. He said in his homily that the Society of Jesus is called “to dare the audacity of the ‘improbable'” along with the “evangelical willingness to do it with the humility” of knowing everything depends on God.

In the day’s Gospel reading, the apostles’ request to Jesus — “Lord, increase our faith” — was an apt and “beautiful prayer” for opening the general congregation, the Dominican priest said.

Jesus teaches faith is necessary, even if it is “as modest in appearance as a mustard seed,” he said. Disciples must remember they remain “unworthy servants” while they dare to aim for the incredible and seemingly impossible — such as rebuilding and renewing a broken world.

The audacity of evangelisation is about pointing people to the one who “has done the improbable when he destroyed death and made life and immortality shine through the Gospel.”

Jesus still invites everyone to make themselves servants of a table — “a table of sinners, a table of welcome for all to which are invited the blind and the lame, Pharisees and publicans, adulterers and good people,” he said.

He also urged the Jesuits to find the strength and creativity of fidelity to the Holy Spirit “as he leads us to encounter and to listen to the other.”

The current superior, Fr Adolfo Nicolas, formally presented his resignation October 3 and named US Father James Grummer, provincial of the Wisconsin Province, to be vicar general of the Jesuits for the period up until a new superior general is elected, probably around October 10.

Fr Nicolas announced in 2014 that he would tender his resignation this year after more than eight years in office. He turned 80 in April.

Like the Pope, the superior general of the Jesuits is elected for life, although the Jesuit constitutions include provisions for the superior general to resign. In 2008, Fr Nicolas succeeded Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach, who resigned at age 79.

Not long after Jesuit priest Jack Warner met a bearded, 22-year-old Midwesterner in 1980, the two Americans bonded, drawn together by the goals and questions that led them both to El Progreso, a small city not far from vast banana fields — the campos bananeros.

Warner was 35 and had arrived a year earlier to form the Teatro La Fragua, a theater company for Hondurans. As the young priest looked to forge a relationship with the campesinos, his friendship blossomed with Tim Kaine, who had taken a year off from Harvard Law School to join the Jesuit mission.

“He was 22 years old,” Warner said, “and it was the typical thing that a 22-year-old would do: What do I do with my life?”

Kaine, now a 58-year-old U.S. senator from Virginia and the Democratic vice presidential nominee, has often said that his time in Honduras helped him answer that question, giving him “a North Star” to guide his life toward public service. It’s central to his biography and likely to arise Tuesday night when he debates his Republican opponent, Mike Pence.

When Kaine traveled to Honduras, the nation was in the throes of turmoil, flanked by countries torn by civil war and ruled by the heavy hand of a U.S-backed military bent on stamping out what it perceived to be communism spreading in the region.

ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Francis on Sunday advised U.S. Catholics who feel they are torn between two imperfect candidates for president to study and pray before they vote and to make sure to follow their conscience.


During his traditional, freewheeling in-flight news conference with reporters on the plane returning from Azerbaijan, Francis was asked how he would counsel American faithful and what wisdom they should keep in mind.

"You have asked me a question that describes a difficult choice because, according to you, there are difficulties with one and difficulties with the other," the pope said, without naming Democrat Hillary Clinton or Republican Donald Trump.

In posing the question, the reporter made allusions to Clinton's support of abortion and Trump's statements vilifying migrants and religious minorities.

"During political campaigns, I never say a word," the pope said. "The people are sovereign. I would only say, study the proposals well, pray and choose with your conscience."

But in the rest of his response, while stressing that he wanted to talk about a "fictional situation," Francis appeared to be saying that the United States was among the countries that had become so politicized that it had effectively lost what he called a culture of politics.

"When in any country there are two, three or four candidates who don't satisfy everyone, it means that perhaps the political life of that country has become too politicized and that it does not have much political culture," he said.

"People say 'I'm from this party' or 'I'm from that party,' but effectively, they don't have clear thoughts about the basics, about proposals," he said.

Last February, while returning from Mexico, the pope was asked if U.S. Catholics could vote for someone with Trump's views on immigration, particularly on the candidate's promise to build a wall at the border with Mexico.

He said a person with such views was "not Christian."

Trump struck back, calling the pope's comments "disgraceful."

With the back-to-the-future Coeur d’Alene Carousel taking shape near Memorial Field, the question had to be asked: What are you going to do about the Idaho law that prevents people from riding merry-go-rounds on Sunday? So Huckleberries asked Cari Fraser of the Carousel Foundation about the “Sunday Rest Law.” Her response was a resounding: “Hunh?” According to several websites, Idaho has a law that prevents the hoi polloi from riding a merry-go-round on Sundays. You can Google it. Originally, the law also banned other entertainment venues, too: theaters, playhouses, dance houses, racetracks, circuses or shows, concert saloons, billiard or pool rooms, bowling alleys, variety halls. Et cetera. When Huckleberries called Kootenai County Prosecutor Barry McHugh to ask about the law, he reacted as Cari did: “Hunh?” Later, Barry found a 1910 court case that was based on the Sunday Rest Law. But he found no evidence that the law was in effect today. The silly law was no laughing matter back in the day. A violator faced a $50 fine and 10 days in jail. In the early 20th century, Idahoans knew that merry-go-rounds were entry-level entertainment for more degenerate rides, like roller coasters and Ferris wheels.

Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct 2, 2016 / 08:21 am (CNA/EWTN News).- In his final speech in Azerbaijan, Pope Francis spoke at length praising the good interreligious relations in the country, but also cautioned that religion must always be respected in civil society, and can never be used as a tool to justify violence.

“Society must always overcome the temptation to take advantage of religious factors,” the Pope said Oct. 2. Religions, he said, “must never be instrumentalized, nor can they ever lend support to, or approve of, conflicts and disagreements.”

To illustrate his point, the Pope referred to the traditional artistic windows of Azerbaijan made solely out of wood and tinted glass, with no glue or nails used in the process.

With the traditional means of crafting, the wood and the glass are set together through “time-consuming and meticulous effort,” leading the wood to support the glass, which in turn lets the light in, he observed.

Using this method as a metaphor, he said it is “the task of every civil society to support religion, which allows a light to shine through, indispensable for living.”

In order for this to happen, “an effective and authentic freedom must be guaranteed,” and artificial forms of “glue” that “bind people to believe, imposing on them a determined belief system and depriving them of the freedom to choose,” cannot be used.

The Pope also condemned the use of “external nails” such as worldliness and the yearning for power and money. God, he said, “cannot be used for personal interests and selfish ends; he cannot be used to justify any form of fundamentalism, imperialism or colonialism.”

He then made a heartfelt appeal for “no more violence in the name of God! May his most holy Name be adored, not profaned or bartered as a commodity through forms of hatred and human opposition.”

Pope Francis traveled to Azerbaijan as the last stop of his three-day trip there and to Georgia, both of which have a small minority of Catholics. Azerbaijan marks the first time the Pope has ever traveled to a majority Shi’ite nation.

The last encounter of the day was an ecumenical meeting that brought together Allahshükür Hummat Pashazade, who as Sheikh and Grand Mufti of the Caucasus is one of the most influential Muslim voices in the world, as well as the local religious leaders of the Russian Orthodox Church and those of the Jewish communities.

In his speech, Francis highlighted the good relations Catholics enjoy with Muslims in the area, pointing to “the tangible help” that the Islamic leader has offered to the Catholic community on several occasions.

He also pointed to the positive relationship between Catholics and Orthodox in the area, as well as the friendship they enjoy with the Jews.

There is a desire within Azerbaijan to protect the religious heritage of each and to pursue greater openness, he said, adding that “it is not opposition but cooperation that helps to build better and more peaceful societies.”

The fraternity sought by the various religions in the area directly opposes those who wish to focus on division or reawaken tensions that come from opposition and differences, he said.

Opening oneself to others “does not lead to impoverishment but rather enrichment, because it enables us to be more human,” he said, adding that it helps all parties to act “with neither abstract idealism nor with interventionism, not by harmful interference or forceful actions, but rather out of respect for the dynamics of history, cultures and religious traditions.”

Religions, he said, have the key task of accompanying people through life, helping them to understand that “the center of each person is outside of himself, that we are oriented toward the Most High and toward the other who is our neighbor.”

Part of this task involves providing authentic answers to those who often find themselves lost among “the swirling contradictions of our time.”

Among these contradictions is a seemingly dominant attitude of nihilism on the part of those who don't believe in anything “except their own well-being, advantage and profit,” he said.

On the other hand, there is a growing presence of “rigid and fundamentalist” attitudes from “those who, through violent words and deeds, seek to impose extreme and radical attitudes which are furthest from the living God.”

Contrary to these attitudes, religions are called to build and foster “a culture of encounter and peace,” based on mutual understanding and humility. True peace, achieved through prayer and dialogue, is a duty for both Christians and other religious communities, he said.

To be open and hope for the good of others is not a type of “accommodating facile syncretism, nor a diplomatic openness which says yes to everything in order to avoid problems,” the Pope said.

Rather, it is “a path of dialogue with others and a path of prayer for all,” allowing love to rise “where there is hatred, and forgiveness where there is offence, of never growing weary of imploring and tracing the ways of peace.”

“The blood of far too many people cries out to God from the earth,” he said, stressing that in the current global context, “we are challenged to give a response that can no longer be put off: to build together a future of peace.”

“Now is not the time for violent or abrupt solutions, but rather an urgent moment to engage in patient processes of reconciliation,” he said, praying that amid the ongoing “night of conflict” overshadowing the global community, religions would be a sign of peace amid “the devastation of death.”

The Pope prayed that religions, particularly in the Caucasus region, would be “active agents” in overcoming the tragedies and tensions of the past and present.

“The treasures old and ever new of the wisdom, culture and religious sensibility of the people of the Caucasus, are a tremendous resource for the future of the region and especially for European culture,” he said, and prayed that they would always be known and valued.

The Thirty-Sixth General Congregation of the Society of Jesus began in Rome on Oct. 2. Gathering Jesuit delegates from around the world, a general congregation is the highest authority in the order. But these worldwide assemblies are rare, convoked only “for matters of greater moment.” This congregation, like the one that preceded it in 2008, has first to accept the resignation of the current superior general, Adolfo Nicolás, S.J., who at age 80 wants to step down, and then elect his successor.

The job of the general involves a lot of time in the office, reading reports, deciding issues presented for his approval, appointing local superiors and writing letters. He attends many meetings, visiting with groups of regional superiors and other significant gatherings, talking, encouraging and supporting. He is not involved in the everyday running of schools, spiritual centers or media work, but his oversight helps these Jesuit missions succeed. Father Nicolás did all this with grace and skill. He was born and grew up in Spain, later went to Japan as a missionary and was named provincial there in 1993. Father Nicolás has delivered significant addresses on education and has been involved in refugee issues among many other initiatives.

The Society of Jesus owes Father Nicolás a great debt of gratitude for his careful leadership. We at Americahave been graced with his guidance during these years of rapid change. We ask our readers and viewers to join us in praying for the success of this general congregation, and in saying, “¡Gracias, Adolfo Nicolás! Thank you very much!”

The election of a successor to Fr Adolfo Nicolas is expected to take place in the coming weeks

A Jesuit priest has explained how the leadership election process works within the order.

The Jesuits have a unique process for electing a superior general for their order, a process that “if you have not seen it, you would think it is impossible,” said Jesuit Father Orlando Torres, rector of an international Jesuit house of studies in Rome.

“I’ve never seen an election like this anywhere in the world,” Fr Torres told reporters in Rome on September 27 as 215 Jesuits from around the world were preparing to begin a general congregation and elect a successor to 80-year-old Spanish Father Adolfo Nicolas.

Going into the meeting, which begins on October 2, there are no candidates, Fr Torres said. After discussing the state of the Society of Jesus — where it is growing and shrinking, its strengths and weaknesses — the delegates begin four days of “murmuratio,” a series of one-on-one conversations designed to elicit information about Jesuits who may have the qualities needed to lead the world’s largest religious order of men.

If, for example, a delegate believes the situation of the Society of Jesus in Europe should be a priority for the next superior, he said, a delegate would ask another, “Do you know someone who could do this work and respond to the needs of the society today?” If the person says he knows someone, the delegate would ask, “What are his qualities? Tell me, what are his limitations?”

However, Fr Torres said, a delegate cannot suggest another vote for a specific candidate or ask who another delegate plans to vote for. Also, the conversations may not take place in groups “to avoid anything that can appear to be a campaign for a candidate or a pressure group,” he said.

And, “obviously, it is prohibited to promote yourself,” Fr Torres said. In fact, in preparing for the election, the congregation delegates elect members of an “anti-ambition” commission to deal with any allegations that someone is campaigning for the office of superior general.

The rules of the Jesuits call for an atmosphere of prayer and penance during the four days of conversations. Little by little, Fr Torres said, “already by the third day you are thinking of two or three” candidates who would make a good superior general.

After the fourth day of “murmuratio,” the delegates celebrate Mass together, invoke the guidance of the Holy Spirit, listen to an admonition by a fellow Jesuit, spend 45 minutes in silence and then begin voting.

To be elected, a candidate must receive at least half plus one of the votes, Fr Torres said.

The process works, he said, pointing to the past two elections: Fr Peter-Hans Kolvenbach was elected on the first ballot in 1983 and Fr Nicolas was elected on the second ballot in 2008.

Although the general congregation sets its own calendar, the actual election is expected sometime after October 7, said Jesuit Father Federico Lombardi, the former Vatican spokesman and a delegate to the general congregation.

“Once elected, we call the pope to inform him,” Fr Torres said. Years ago a delegate would walk down the street to the Vatican to inform the pope, but “now we use a cellphone.”

Theoretically, any Jesuit priest who has made final vows may be elected, Fr Torres said. He does not have to be among the general congregation delegates.

But Fr Lombardi told reporters, “If during the ‘murmuratio,’ I am starting to think that I would like to vote for this person, I would go to him and speak with him to get to know him and find out how he thinks.”

“As an elector, I feel a need to have a personal relationship with the person I am thinking about electing,” Fr Lombardi said. It is not enough that “someone said he is good. No. We must verify that and know him personally.”

The Society of Jesus has reached its 476 year since its foundation in 1540. It has had 35 General Congregations and elected 30 Jesuit Father Generals. This General Congregation is the highest legislative body of the Jesuits, higher than even the General when the congregation is in session.

So on October 2, 2016 when these Jesuits who are elected or by virtue of their office meet in the 36th General Congregation, they will elect the thirty-first Father General and also new legislative guidelines.

They’ll discuss the new challenges that face the world today and strategize among themselves for the immediate and long-term future. This time, they’ll do all that against a huge backdrop.

The “Francis Effect” which is viewing the Church from a totally different perspective is also challenging the Jesuits. Not only is Francis a pope, but he is a Jesuit pope, and therefore the challenges are doubled in many ways for the Jesuits.

He knows the Jesuits as an insider and can make demands now as the outsider, the pope. He will ask the Jesuits to “to smell like the sheep.” How far will the Jesuits want to go, and how deep, are the important questions.

In the 32nd General Congregation, the Jesuits faced a huge paradigm shift towards promoting a faith that does justice. Many individual Jesuits laid down their lives all over the world for this cause, but did we go far enough as a body?

This issue will remain very relevant as long as there are poor in the world. The gulf between Lazarus and Dives is still very much a chasm.

Today we are faced with dwindling numbers like all other religious groups. We cannot keep doing the same things like yesterday. With limited men and materials, we need to focus our energy on only what we can do. We should leave the areas where others are capable of doing the work, and doing it even better than us.

We must let go of our securities and venture into the deep, with trust in the Lord as the logo of the general congregation depicts.

The greatest tool the Jesuits have is our spiritual heritage, the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. We need to use this instrument with all our heart, mind and soul and let all our actions flow from this wisdom. However, it might be costly!

We might have to leave our boats on the shore again and move into the deep. We have to be unencumbered by the baggage of our own history and be once more men on the move, never satisfied with the status quo but hungering and thirsting for more, the Magis.

I am confident that the Society of Jesus is going to come out stronger from the 36th General Congregation with the blessings of the Holy Spirit and the charism of Pope Francis. We will continue to make a difference in the world, in serving the Church faithfully and humbly leaving our own individual lives in his hands.

In this issue of the Last Trumpet Newsletter, we will thoughtfully consider the current condition of our world and the systemic corruption of the political realm. We will also take yet another glimpse at what the future of this modern world may hold.

As I write this newsletter in the latter days of August 2016, the United States of America is in the midst of an election year. In just a few short months, the American people will know who their next president will be, and unless there are unforeseen and improbable circumstances, it will either be the Republican, Donald Trump, or the Democrat, Hillary Clinton. Amid the fury of these presidential campaigns, we hear many promises given by these candidates. Yet, we know from history that political candidates are notorious for broken promises. In fact, one of the most memorable campaign promises in United States' history came from former President George H. W. Bush who famously said at the Republican National Convention in 1988, "The Congress will push me to raise taxes, and I'll say no, and they'll push, and I'll say no, and they'll push again, and I'll say to them, 'Read my lips: no new taxes.'" It was just two short years later in 1990 that President Bush announced new tax increases. (1)

Our current President, Barack Obama, is another man who is known for his multitudinous promises, which included an assurance to the American people that his presidency would be far more open and transparent than his predecessors before him. In a memorandum published in January 2009, Obama wrote the following: "My Administration is committed to creating an unprecedented level of openness in government. We will work together to ensure the public trust and establish a system of transparency, public participation, and collaboration. Openness will strengthen our democracy and promote efficiency and effectiveness in government."(2) Obama then proceeded to do the exact opposite. On March 17, 2014, CBS News published a story with the headline, "Government Secrecy up Under Obama Administration." (3) In this article, Senator Patrick Leahy, who is a Democrat from Vermont, complained that the government will often deny requests for information they do not want to reveal by classifying such information as top secret. "I'm concerned the growing trend toward relying upon FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) exemptions to withhold large swaths of government information is hindering the public's right to know. It becomes too much of a temptation. If you screw up in government, just mark it 'top secret,'" Senator Leahy opined. (4) In reality, men who dare to expose the truth of government corruption are ostracized. This includes Edward Snowden who in previous days worked for the National Security Agency, or NSA, until the day he exposed the unscrupulous activities of his employer and fled the country in 2013.

The website known as Politifact currently features a list of promises broken by Barack Obama. This list exceeds one hundred and will likely grow even more after Obama's final presidential term ends in 2017. (5) His promise to the American people that the implementation of the Affordable Care Act would not force them to change their health insurance plans even won "Lie of the Year" in December 2013. (6) "If you're one of the more than 250 million Americans who already have health insurance, you will keep your health insurance," Obama asserted in June 2012. Approximately four million people received cancellation notices from their insurance companies in 2013. (7)

Considering the politician's propensity to lie, can we believe anything they say? Our current candidates for the 2016 election make many promises just as other politicians do. In fact, Hillary Clinton has promised to eliminate tuition for students attending in-state public colleges if their families make less than 250,000 dollars per year. She has also promised to raise the federal minimum wage to at least 12 dollars an hour and pledged not to raise taxes on middle class Americans. (8) Interestingly enough, Obama also made similar promises, pledging to raise the minimum wage to 9.50 per hour and promising not to raise taxes for the middle class. (9) He lied. It certainly is a strange system wherein votes are bought with promises that do not even have to be kept. The American people, for the most part, know that campaign promises are lies. Yet, people still use such promises as a guideline to decide who they will vote for.

Although men will often disappoint, and politicians will often lie, God always keeps His promises. In II Corinthians 1:20-22 we read, "For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us. Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts." God has promised to forgive us of our sins if we repent, and He has promised to send us His Spirit to guide us in our lives. We have also been promised that our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will return. I urge every reader of this newsletter to lay hold on the promises of God. If you have not yet repented of your sins and dedicated your life to God, I urge you to do so now.

The Trouble With Obamacare!

If one were to sit down and ask Barack Obama of his achievements, he would likely reference the passage of his healthcare law, known as the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, as his favorite accomplishment. This law, which forces every American to buy "affordable" health insurance or pay a fine to the Internal Revenue Service if they fail to comply, was signed into law on March 23, 2010. (10) In the days leading up to the passage of Obamacare, Nancy Pelosi, who was Speaker of the House of Representatives in the United States at the time, famously declared, "We have to pass the bill (Obamacare) so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy." (11) The official website of the Affordable Care Act, healthcare.gov, opened in October 2013, (12) and since that time the American people have become well acquainted with this new healthcare system.

As it turns out, Obamacare is not quite as wonderful as the Democrats who passed it said it would be. In recent months, numerous health insurance companies have announced that they will scale back the insurance they offer through Obamacare or withdraw from the government health insurance program entirely. In August 2016, the health insurance company known as Aetna announced a plan to reduce its offerings on the Obamacare exchange by 80 percent in 2017. This decision was made after it came to light that Aetna is expected to lose 300 million dollars for participating in Obamacare. "The vast majority of payers have experienced continued financial stress within their individual public exchange business. Providing affordable, high-quality health care options to consumers is not possible without a balanced risk pool," stated Mark Bertolini, who is the Chief Executive Officer at Aetna. (13) In other words, Aetna is exiting the Obamacare marketplace because the majority of people who sign up for the insurance on the exchange have costly health problems, while healthy people who would balance the market are opting not to participate in the program. Additionally, two other major insurance companies, United HealthGroup and Humana, have also announced their intentions to quit Obamacare. (14) As a result, consumers will find fewer choices while shopping for insurance on the Obamacare exchange next year. Such is the case in Pinal County, Arizona, where the 300,000 residents who live there will not even be able to buy Obamacare insurance in 2017 because no insurance companies are offering it in their area. (15) In other areas, the cost of insurance premiums are likely to rise by significant amounts. According to a report by theMilwaukee Journal Sentinel, insurance companies have proposed increases in prices ranging from 5.44 to 37.88 percent in the state of Wisconsin. (16) The state of Illinois will also see sharp increases in insurance cost next year ranging from 44 to 55 percent according to the Chicago Tribune. "While these rate approvals result in a very difficult outcome for consumers, they were necessary to ensure that all Illinois consumers actually have an option for coverage when the 2017 Open Enrollment begins on November 1, 2016," said acting director of the state's insurance department Anne Melissa Dowling. (17) Additionally, the Los Angeles Timeshas reported that Californians' insurance premiums will increase by 13.2 percent in 2017. (18)

By now it should be clear that Obamacare is awful. We have lived with it long enough to see that it probably will not get better, but in all likelihood will actually get worse. While the official name for Obama's law is the "Affordable Care Act," many people, including myself, have come to realize that it is not affordable at all. Naturally, people are hoping that Obamacare will fall apart, and the mainstream news outlet known as CNBC seems to think that the program is doomed for failure. A headline they published on August 17, 2016, declares, "Aetna's Obamacare pullout means the 'insurance death spiral' has arrived." (19) However, we must consider the possibility that Obamacare as it exists today was never really what the liberals wanted. In an opinion piece written for the New York Times in 2013, the socialist filmmaker and documentarian, Michael Moore, admitted that Obamacare is "awful." Yet he praised the program because he believes it is a steppingstone to a universal government-controlled healthcare system. (20) Although many countries already have universal healthcare, the United States has been a notable exception. Clearly, this makes the United Nations unhappy since a global healthcare system is one of their goals that they hope to make a reality by the year 2030. In an official document from the United Nations, which was published in October 2015, we find the following words: "We envisage a world free of fear and violence. A world with universal literacy. A world with equitable and universal access to quality education at all levels, to health care and social protection, where physical, mental and social well-being are assured."(21) Yes, according to the United Nations, a truly universal and global healthcare system is a crucial component in their forthcoming one world government.

The Bizarre Campaign Of Hillary Clinton!

With the 2016 presidential election in the United States looming, the headlines are constantly dominated by stories of Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Of course, we know from her past that Hillary Clinton is an exceedingly wicked woman who loves abortion, is involved in the occult, and is a pathological liar. To make matters worse, it seems that working with Hillary can be very dangerous business. In fact, many of Clinton's associates in the past have met with untimely and mysterious ends. The latest victim is a man by the name of Seth Rich. He was considered a rising star in the Democratic Party until he was shot and killed on the night of July 10, 2016, while walking home in a suburb of Washington, D.C. (22) Although the police have characterized this deadly assault as a robbery gone wrong, it is quite odd that none of Mr. Rich's belongings were stolen. "There had been a struggle. His hands were bruised, his knees are bruised, his face is bruised, and yet he had two shots to his back, and yet they never took anything. They took his life for literally no reason," Rich's mother said. (23) A widely circulating theory suggests that Mr. Rich was the party responsible for leaking thousands of emails which exposed the Democratic Party's unethical behavior as they worked for Hillary Clinton. The scandal led to the resignation of Debbie Wasserman-Schultz who had served as chairperson of the Democratic National Committee. To further fan the flames of suspicion, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is now offering a 20,000 dollar reward to anyone with information regarding the death of Seth Rich. Since WikiLeaks is the organization who released the incriminating emails, it would make sense that Mr. Rich was the source for their information. Assange has not confirmed or denied that Seth Rich was his source. (24) It is an interesting theory, however.

Hillary Clinton wants to be the next President of the United States, and there is a very real possibility that she could be given that position. Nevertheless, her behavior as a presidential candidate is quite bizarre. It seems she has great reticence when it comes to communicating with the press. In fact, a report published on August 24, 2016, by The Washington Post indicates that Clinton has not held a press conference since December 5, 2015! (25) In response to the growing outcry, Clinton's campaign manager, Robby Mook, has defended his candidate by claiming that Clinton has granted over three hundred interviews since the beginning of 2016. (26) It is interesting to note, however, that Hillary Clinton will seldom allow reporters to interview her, choosing rather to appear on television in a controlled environment. When she does allow an interviewer to be graced by her presence, her interviews are very short. They typically run between three and eight minutes, which all but guarantees that the interviewer will not be able to ask any in-depth or difficult questions. (27) What is she hiding? Perhaps Clinton already knows that she will be the next president and is therefore not particularly concerned about how she is perceived by the public. Needless to say, the public's perception of her is not good. A recent poll conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News found that 62 percent of respondents said Clinton is neither honest nor trustworthy. (28) Indeed, Ms. Clinton has been involved in numerous scandals over the years, including the handling of her emails while she served as Secretary of State under the Obama Administration and inappropriate dealings with individuals who donated money to her Clinton Foundation. One can only imagine what a Hillary Clinton presidency would be like, but the possibility does call to mind the words we find in Proverbs 29:2, "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

What Does The Future Hold?

There is something about the year 2030. Not only is the year of 2030 the target year wherein the United Nations hopes to establish its one world government, it is also a year that was written about in a recent article published by the Kiplinger Letter. In an article entitled "20 Amazing Ways Your Daily Life Will Be Different in 2030," the publication details some of its best guesses regarding what the future will be like. Some of their predictions include an Internet-enabled refrigerator which will keep an inventory of your groceries and automatically order replacement items when supplies are low. They also predict that groceries, household items, and small items weighing less than 10 pounds will be delivered by drones. They say appliances, locks, lights, heating and cooling systems, and other household equipment will all be linked by wireless microchips to the Internet. It is fully expected that driverless cars will be commonly used by 2030 as well. Other predictions include facial recognition security checkpoints at the airports, implanted microchips that will monitor the health of humans, smartphones that record everything we do, and a mostly cashless society. (29)

At first glance, these predictions from the Kiplinger Letter may seem far-fetched. However, these are educated guesses, and at this point in history, we are very close to seeing some of these predictions become reality. For example, the government of New Zealand recently gave the pizza chain known as Domino's permission to use drones for pizza delivery. The drones that Domino's will be using were developed by a company known as Flirtey."With the increased number of deliveries we make each year, we were faced with the challenge of ensuring our delivery times continue to decrease and that we strive to offer our customers new and progressive ways of ordering from us," said Don Meij who is the chief executive and managing director for Domino's in New Zealand. He later went on to say,"Domino's is all about providing customers with choice and making customer's lives easier. Adding innovation such as drone deliveries means customers can experience cutting-edge technology and the convenience of having their Supreme Pizza delivered via air to their door. This is the future." (30) The company is also seeking to deliver pizzas using robots. (31)

In other news, a company known as nuTonomy is now offering a new autonomous vehicle taxi service in Singapore. This is notable because while companies such as Google have been testing driverless cars for years, nuTonomy is the first company in the world to allow the general public to use such vehicles. The service is limited for now to a small area consisting of 2.5 miles, but the company is hoping to have a full fleet in operation throughout Singapore by the year 2018. "We face constraints in land and manpower. We want to take advantage of self-driving technology to overcome such constraints, and in particular to introduce new mobility concepts which could bring about transformational improvements to public transport in Singapore,"stated Singapore's Permanent Secretary for Transport, Pang Kin Keong. (32) The well-known ride service known as Uber is also set to test a similar service in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the coming weeks. Customers seeking rides will summon them as usual with Uber's program that works on smartphones. To entice customers to try it, Uber will be offering free rides in their autonomous vehicles. It is worthwhile to note, however, that these vehicles are not fully autonomous. They require a driver who can take control if something goes wrong, and these vehicles at this point are unable to cross bridges without human intervention. "Bridges are really hard. And there are like 500 bridges in Pittsburgh," said Uber's engineering director, Raffi Krikorian. (33)

Drones will be delivering pizzas in New Zealand, and driverless cars will be giving customers rides in Pittsburgh and Singapore, but how close are we to a cashless society? According to a report published in November 2015, chief executive officer Tim Cook of the computer maker known as Apple has predicted that a cashless society will be here soon. Speaking at a gathering at Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland, Cook told his audience, "Your kids will not know what money is." (34) We are already seeing the first stirrings of a cashless society in the United States. The chain of restaurants known as Sweetgreen recently stopped accepting cash at some locations."One of the biggest complaints at Sweetgreen is the line, so by reducing cash we're able to serve customers a lot faster," said Jonathan Newman, who is co-founder of the Sweetgreen chain. (35) A company known as Major Food Group, which operates restaurants in New York, has also decided to forgo cash at some of its locations, including a restaurant known as Sadelle's. "I believe very strongly in the cash-free movement. There is an immense amount of work, process, and error that goes into taking, processing, monitoring and depositing cash. The amount of time and money that this costs is not worth the amount of business that is done in cash," declared Major Food Group co-owner Jeff Zalaznick. (36) I suspect that when the transformation to a cashless society is complete, it will not be because governments around the world have stopped issuing cash. Rather it will be because businesses no longer accept it, and thus having cash will be useless. This trend can even be observed at the Shopko store in my hometown of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. The store gives customers the option of using a self-checkout to purchase items, but those machines do not accept cash.

The technology required for a fully cashless society already exists. This is clearly shown in an article published on May 21, 2016, entitled "Satan's Credit Card: What the Mark of the Beast Taught Me About the Future of Money." The article, which was written by a man named Charlie Warzel, chronicles the author's quest to go completely cashless for thirty days. Although this man's original plan was to use a mishmash of mobile payment services with his smartphone to pay for goods and services, it culminated in a trip to Stockholm, Sweden, where he eventually received a microchip implant in his hand. As he prepared to receive his microchip, Warzel was warned by his piercer who would be performing the operation, "So now I'm going to tell you something you probably didn't consider before. People - very conservative right-wing Christian types - might come after you for this. They see it as the Mark of the Beast. I just want you to be prepared." The warning did not dissuade Warzel, however. Not only did he receive his microchip, but he was determined to become the first man to pay for a meal at a restaurant with his hand. In April 2016, he did that very thing at a restaurant in New York City. (37)

The human population is marching toward a future where technology controls the people, and a global one world government is established. We are closer than ever to seeing this happen, and that means we are closer than ever to the return of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. As we get closer to that fateful day, we see a world where there is trouble on every side. In August 2016, the American state of Louisiana suffered from devastating flooding that has damaged more than 110,000 homes. (38) The state of California is quite literally on fire as 4,200 wildfires have swept through the region so far this year, leading to the destruction of a vast area of land. (39) In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, riots broke out on August 13, 2016, and continued on August 14, 2016, (40) after a black police officer shot a black man who was pointing a gun at the officer. (41) Numerous stores in the area were looted and burned beyond repair. The violence was so bad that Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke requested assistance from the Wisconsin National Guard. (42) These are dangerous days.

We live in a world that desperately needs a Saviour. Thankfully, we can draw near to our God for comfort and strength in this tumultuous world. We are assured of this in James 4:6-10 which tells us, "But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up."

Hearken unto me to hallow the Sabbath day

Thus saith the Lord; Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the sabbath day, nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;
Neither carry forth a burden out of your houses on the sabbath day, neither do ye any work, but hallow ye the sabbath day, as I commanded your fathers.
But they obeyed not, neither inclined their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear, nor receive instruction.

Deadly bacteria in seafood is on the rise due to climate change, study says

The rise in ocean temperatures is leading to an increase in bacterial infections from eating raw seafood, a new study from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences finds.

The study found that the higher water temperatures in the North Atlantic are more hospitable for Vibrio bacteria, many of which can make people very sick.

While there are several different genus of Vibrio, Vibrio vulnificus is among the most dangerous.

"Vibrio vulnificus, it's one of the scarier bacteria out there," Dr. Cahoon, a professor of biology and marine biology at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, told AccuWeather.

"People with compromised immune systems, post-surgical patients, people taking immune-suppressing medications, they can't fight off the infection that well," he said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the number of reported Vibrio cases has risen over the last several years. In 2012, the number of reported cases was 944. In 2014, 1,252 were reported.

Once infected, symptoms tend to mimic that of food poisoning. Many cases largely go unreported.

While Vibrio vulnificus has been a problem mostly along the Gulf coast over the years, the study found that there has been an increase in infections in the North Atlantic as the oceans get warmer.

However, the spread of this disease can't solely be traced back to the rise in sea temperatures.

"You've got a combination of factors there, the presence of more people along the coastline, contributing extra waste and nutrients [to the sea water]," Cahoon said.

Much of the shellfish contamination comes from sewer runoff and septic tank runoff, Cahoon said. The more bacteria in the water, the more shellfish become infected, and thus the more people become ill when they eat them raw.

"[With climate change], not only does it get warmer overall, it gets rainier," Cahoon said. "The more extreme rain events... those are becoming more frequent, and these are the ones that cause waste systems to fail."

Cahoon said that because of the increase in rain, the sewer systems are overloaded, "and so we're seeing a lot more runoff in general and lot more contamination."

There are several ways for the bacteria to infect people. Predominantly, people become sick from eating raw shellfish, but others can come in contact with Vibro vulficus from swimming in contaminated waters.

"That's why authorities warn people 'do not swim in flood water,'" Cahoon said. "It may look like fun, but that water is almost certainly contaminated with fecal material."

As of right now, there aren't many solutions to the growing problem at this time as scientists continue to look for new ways to fight climate change.

"It's nature, and it's hard to regulate nature," Cahoon said.
