On December 1, 2009, the Lisbon Treaty entered into force.
In Article 11.4, the Consolidated version of the Treaty on European Union states:
"Not less than one million citizens who are nationals of a significant number of Member States may take the initiative of inviting the European Commission, within the framework of its powers, to submit any appropriate proposal on matters where citizens consider that a legal act of the Union is required for the purpose of implementing the Treaties."
Thus, the European Citizens´ Initiative formally exists since the Lisbon Treaty has entered into force on December 1, 2009. Currently, however, the procedure for setting out the precise legal structuring of the European citizens' initiative is underway. For example, it must be clarified from how many member states the signatures have to be submitted or how long the period will be in which the signatures can be collected. Once this process is completed, the collection of signatures for our first European Citizens´ Initiative can actually start.
For the success of the initiative it is important that, at this moment, we will be well prepared in order to be able to start quickly and easily with the collection of the signatures. Therefore, we ask you to sign already today as a supporter of the First European Citizens' Initiative for a work-free Sunday in Europe!
