Ilhan Omar's former husband surfaces in South Africa amid Trump's attacks: Report
Ilhan Omar, the Minnesota congresswoman who has long been the target of politically charged rumours about her personal life, is once again in the spotlight following news about her former husband, Ahmed Elmi. According to a report by the New York Post, Elmi, whom Omar was legally married to from 2009 to 2017, has reappeared online after years of public absence.
The paper states that Elmi, 40, now presents himself on social media as a self-described "dirty dandy," posting flamboyant fashion photos, nightlife snapshots, and images alongside friends in upscale London cafes.
He has spent recent years studying in the United Kingdom, earning a doctorate at Bristol University before becoming a research assistant there, with academic interests reportedly including "critically queer studies," decolonisation, gender research, and Black humanities. More recent posts show him visiting Witwatersrand University in Johannesburg, South Africa.

From Refugee to Power - The Controversial Journey of Ilhan Omar
The New York Post revisits long-standing conservative allegations that Omar's marriage to Elmi was improper, including the widely circulated claim that he is her brother.
These allegations remain unproven and have been repeatedly denied by Omar. Multiple mainstream fact-checkers (AP, Reuters, Snopes, AFP) have also found no verifiable evidence to substantiate the "brother" claim.
The New York Post cites Somali community figure Abdihakim Osman, who told the Daily Mail in 2020 that Omar once referred to Elmi as her brother who needed "papers." These claims, however, have not been independently verified and contradict documentation Omar has provided. No federal agency has ever filed charges of marriage fraud against Omar or Elmi.
TRUMP AMPLIFIES ATTACKS
The renewed focus on Omar follows a recent rally in which President Donald Trump escalated his rhetoric against her. On Tuesday, Trump mocked her hijab as a "little turban," referred to her as "illegal," and repeated the unverified accusation that she "married her brother to get in the US." He also attacked Somalia, saying it was "the worst country in the world," and suggested Omar should be deported.
Omar responded on X: "Trump's obsession with me is beyond weird he's resorting to regurgitating bigoted lies instead."
OMAR'S CURRENT MARRIAGE
Omar is currently married to Tim Mynett, a political consultant and founder of the E Street Group. They married on March 11, 2020, in Washington, D.C., following her earlier separation from longtime partner Ahmed Hirsi, with whom she shares three children. Mynett has one son from a previous marriage.
