A new tropical storm is developing in the Atlantic that could be named, unfortunately, “Hurricane Dolly.”
WCAX reports a tropical cyclone appears likely to develop in the Atlantic basin within the next few days. The weather development is being monitored as it has a “high chance” of developing into a tropical storm or hurricane within the next two to seven days.
The storm will be named Dolly as it is the next name on the 2026 list of Atlantic hurricanes. Different names are used to identify different storms during hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
That means Tropical Storm Dolly or Hurricane Dolly could emerge less than a week after the death of Dolly Parton. The beloved country singer, actress and philanthropist died Tuesday at age 80.
“If it becomes a hurricane, it should be a category 9 to 5,” one Facebook user joked.
“She’s going after Jolene,” another commented.
“I would prefer a star be named after her so she could sparkle down on all of us,” a third wrote.
While it may seem like unfortunate timing, “Dolly” was chosen for the list of hurricane names six years ago. The World Meteorological Organization chooses the names, which are recycled every six years.
According to The Weather Channel, a previous Hurricane Dolly made landfall in Texas in July 2008. It was the first storm since 1999’s Hurricane Bret to make landfall along the Deep South Texas barrier islands, breaking rainfall records and causing flooding that impacted agriculture.
Hurricane names are only retired or replaced “if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name would be inappropriate,” according to the National Weather Service. Melissa was retired last year, and three names (Beryl, Helene, Milton) were retired in 2024.
The path and threat level of Tropical Cyclone Dolly has not yet been determined, but WCAX notes that August and September are typically the most active for Atlantic hurricanes.
