“A good chunk of the population” in France is opposed to what the French culture and way of life represents, and “that’s a huge, huge problem,” says an international security expert.

Zineb Riboua, a research fellow with the Hudson Institute’s Center for Peace and Security in the Middle East, said this is “a fundamental weakness” at a time when Europe faces not only great internal strife, but also external geopolitical threats, like an aggressive Russia.

“The majority are not willing to die for what the French Republic represents,” she said.

Riboua joined Inside Policy Talks to offer her reflections in the wake of destructive riots in France that saw symbols of French civilization burned to the ground.

On the podcast, Riboua and Casey Babb, director of The Promised Land at MLI, talked about this latest flashpoint for surging extremism in the West. They discussed the presence of Palestinian flags and related symbols like the keffiyeh at many of the riots, and whether this violence could soon spread to Canada.
