JAKARTA — A 6.6-magnitude earthquake hit the northern part of Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Tuesday, the US Geological Survey said.
The quake struck at 12:55 am (1755 GMT on Monday) at a depth of 52 kilometres (30 miles), USGS said, with its epicentre around 400 kilometres (250 miles) southeast of Banda Aceh.
The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake was too far inland to generate a tsunami.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, where the meeting of continental plates causes high seismic activity, and Sumatra is particularly prone to earthquakes.
Aceh was devastated when a 9.1-magnitude quake off Sumatra in December 2004 triggered a huge tsunami which killed more than 220,000 people around the Indian Ocean.
USGS initially gave a magnitude of 6.5 for Tuesday’s quake.

Wow, these events just keep unfolding and accelerating - now like never before.
The prophesied "birth pangs" of Matthew are truly upon us now - closer together and more intense each time. And when we see these things come to pass...we raise up our heads, and know that He IS coming quickly.
Be sober and alert, and full of praise for our loving God, Jesus Christ, who wants only for us to know the truth and choose the only real salvation there is - His love and the sacrifice of His shed blood so long ago, His gift to all of us, and the only possible way that we could receive the gift of eternal life.
Nothing we can do throughout our entire lives (good works) can ever even come close to the atonment of Christ's sacrifice on Calvary. It is accomplished. Done deal.
May God bless all the poor souls who are living through this chaos and destruction in so many places around our world (many of which we do not even know about, being that Satan's mass media only chooses to tell us about a few here and there to serve their own selfish agendas and to manipulate us all, in one direction or another), and those who have lost their lives and those of their most precious loved ones due to all these tragedies, natural and otherwise.
The only consolation is that those who have left this earth are now home and at one with our perfect, infinitely loving Creator, who is beautiful and comforting beyond anything we can possibly imagine in our current state of very limited awareness - and let's face it - just plain ignorance compared to what our souls will one day be capable of understadning and knowing when He pours out His knowledge over us, like a calm and soothing river of eternal wisdom, that only He can provide to us.
As He calls them home, I can only think to myself that although I feel deep compassion and sadness for their families and friends who must now go on without them and will miss them horribly, they have now been set free from the Satanic bonds of sin that plague this earth to a large degree. Now, they are home with God, free to know His true peace and the infinite grace and love that is our Heavenly Father and Lord Jesus Christ.
Come quickly Lord, we need you now more than ever before, and we believe in your promise to return for us who trust and obey you.
And despite our many flaws, sins and endless stupidity that makes us all unworthy of your love - we love you and accept your sacrifice on our behalf to save us from ourselves and from our adversary, who works tirelessly to tempt and destroy us, to separate us from the only thing that matters in all of Creaton - God's Love for us and His forgiveness for all our sins.
